Chairman of the Alliance for Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, was appointed as the ‘Secretary’ of the Amaila Falls Hydro Inc., the Special Purpose Vehicle/Company created for the development, construction and operation of the US$858M Hydro Power plant.

Executive Member of the AFC, Cathy Hughes, the wife of Nigel Hughes, as recent as yesterday issued a press statement in which she was identified as the Public Relations Officer for Sithe Global, locally.

Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, when contacted said that he was aware that Hughes has an association with the company but said he did not know that he was Company Secretary.

A source within the Alliance for Change (AFC) said that the imbroglio surrounding Kaieteur News' revelation that Nigel Hughes was appointed company secretary of Amaila Hydro Inc in 2009 is far from over as it was sanctioned by persons within that party's leadership. The source said that though the information was provided by Christopher Ram it was approved by a group of very senior members in the party's leadership. Though not naming names the source said that Hughes advocacy in the courts on behalf of certain persons has been the bone of contention for the group which believes that his actions are are causing the party to loose support among Indo-Guyanese voters. The group feels that Hughes is enhancing his personal reputation at the party's expense. Things got worse when Lusignan massacre accused James Hyles whom he represented pro bono was acquitted.

The AFC is known to be dominated by several factions. In the run up to the party's announcement of its 2011 election presidential candidate the powerful diaspora group led by Dr Rohan Somar was successful in putting in check the ambitions of Raphael Trotman who wanted to sidestep the party's leadership rotation rule to allow himself another run in 2011 as its presidential candidate.  Trotman later declined the prime ministerial candidacy which was then given to Sheila Holder prior to her passing. It was only after his ascension to the parliamentary speakership that he returned to the fold.

APNU accuses AFC of “selling out”, voting with “PPP counterparts”

The opposition Alliance for Change (AFC) broke ranks with its fellow opposition party A Partnership for Nation Unity (APNU) by voting along with the ruling People's Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) to return to the house two bills pertaining to the Amaila Falls Hydro Project which were earlier voted down by the opposition and the party came under attack for its stance.  APNU member of parliament James Bond took to his Facebook page where he insinuated to his audience that the act was a betrayal.  In one post Bond wrote "Motion to restore defeated Bills on the floor of the National Assembly. To restore these Bills the Standing Orders have to be suspended first.....a vote to so suspend these Standing Orders is now being taken......the AFC is of course voting with their PPPC "counterparts" ".

This is the first time the AFC has broken ranks with the APNU by voting along with the government side on any issue in parliament in a very long while. Both parties have voted against every single developmental project despite being supplied with all the necessary documentation and clarifications.

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Tuesday evening said it was tired of  armchair experts who have come out of the woodwork to condemn the Amaila Falls Hydroelectricity project. In one of its strongest pronouncements to date the business grouping said it cannot overemphasise the importance of the Amaila Falls Hydro project to Guyana's future.

It said cheaper energy will have a transformational effect on the manufacturing sector and indeed all of the private sector.  In reference those in and aligned to the opposition that have opposed the project the PSC said it is tired of the armchair experts who have come out of the woodwork to condemn the project on spurious economic grounds.

This project it said, has benefitted from the expertise of the Blackstone Group, the largest financial advisory and alternative investment firm in the world and challenged the 'so-called local experts' to match their expertise. The PSC also challenged this group which includes Kaieteur News and its publisher Glen Lall to give sound economic reasons for their recalcitrance.
