The Bollywood-Kolkata Love Affair, In Pictures!

Bollywood has always had a love affair with Kolkata. The City of Joy would feature here and there in Bollywood movies. But that would generally be Howrah Bridge or Victoria Memorial featuring in the background.

But of late Kolkata has suddenly become the preferred choice for filmmakers. Though Parineeta was shot extensively in the bylanes of North Kolkata, it was with Kahaani that Kolkata suddenly came into the limelight.

With three upcoming movies being shot in Kolkata, let us have a look at all the Bolly flicks that have been shot in the city which is "bilkul naya hai phir bhi beetein kal mein giraaftar hain" :

The movie was an adaptation of the Bengali novel of the same name written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Needless to say, the movie was laced with Bangaliana, and was shot in Bengal.

Kahaani was the movie that redefined Kolkata to the people of the nation. The movie was not just stuck in North Kolkata. Rather, it explored South Kolkata, Gariahat, Park Street and Kumartuli. Infact the metro was also shown. No film had portrayed Kolkata in its totality as well as Kahaani did!

The displaced Bengali returning to its roots is a common sight. And this was pictured beautifully around the Bengali father-daughter duo. Amitabh Bachchan was seen cycling everywhere in north Kolkata. And there was jam near Thanthaniya Kalibari, where the house shown in the film was located!

The film had a portion shot in Kolkata. And the scenes featured in the song "Heer Toh Badi Sad Hai". It had shown everyday places like Howrah Bridge, Kolkata airport and even the famous Flurry's restaurant.

The one minute teaser revealed that the film will be set in Kolkata. the teaser had all the signature north Kolkata things- newspaper, yellow taxi, chai ki kettle hand pulled rickshaw and British styled old houses in a gully. So much is the old world charm that the typewriter looks in sync. The team has started shooting in the city.

The recent pictures that surfaced on the internet showed Arjun Rampal and Vidya Balan around the signature yellow taxis. The shoot is over, according to sources.
