Students and teachers of the Mae’s Schools were left shocked yesterday after a Fourth Form student committed suicide.
Vanica Schultz, 15, died at the Woodlands Hospital, where she was rushed after falling ill at the private school. It was later discovered that Schultz, who distributed suicide notes to her classmates and teachers, had ingested a poisonous substance.

Whatever the issue might be with this young girl....I don’t think Guyanese are trained to deal with these type of situations....especially if and when it happens in remote areas...Suicide affects everyone, but from what I have seen the preponderant cases happen to be Indos...
It still is a taboo subject...this probably explains why current nad previous governments have seriously addressed this problem.

His father was also sexually abusing a younger female sibling. This happened during the PPP tenure. Are they also to blame?
Sad indeed. Such a beautiful child. I don't know how much social media is contributing to the thoughts and actions but I do believe that there is peer pressure on social media that plays a significant role. Indeed sad.

I never pressured my kids. All I tell them is that as a canecutter, I never passed the letter 'A' in the alphabet so if they get anything other than A, I wouldn't understand what it means. They needed to get A to keep me in the loop of how they were doing in school.

I agree. I had to react right away and couldn't come up with the words I needed to express my utmost disgust. Parents are supposed to be the nurturer and protectors of their children.
I don’t know which suicide program could cover every scenario. She is clearly not from a poor class. She did not want her parents to find out what she was up to in school.
I had a 12 yr old friend committed suicide due to issues with siblings. We spoke an hour before and he was normal.
One of the biggest issues in Guyana is the easy of accessing pesticides. People get upset, angry and before they have time to calm down, cool off, reflect and settle matters, they ingest poison.
My 12 year old friend told his mom he don’t want to die . He was just angry and the poison was right there and that he was sorry. He died anyway.
Some parents in Guyana take out their frustrations on their children; they yell at the kids, then tell them 'why don't you go drink poison.' We witnessed this with some neighbors; then my parents talked to the parents and asked them why do they talk to their kids like that, and how would they feel if the kids drank poison. The parents stopped doing that.
