GUYANA TIMES reports:

Two juvenile sisters were before Magistrate Allan Wilson on Tuesday for assaulting and threatening their father. The young ladies, ages 14 and 17, of North Sophia, Georgetown, made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the separate counts of common assault.  The 14-year-old sister was additionally slapped with another charge of threatening language. Both sisters pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on February 24 at North Sophia, they unlawfully assaulted the virtual complainant (VC), Brain Singh. The younger sister also plead not guilty to the other charge, which stated that on the same day and location, she made use of threatening language to the VC whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned. Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai stated that the defendants are the daughters of the VC and on the day in question, the 14-year-old went home in the wee hours of the morning after attending the “Popcaan” stage show. The VC rebuked her for her behaviour, causing her to be annoyed and they had an exchange of words. The 17-year-old sister then intervened accosting the VC for rebuking her younger sister since she said he does not take care of them. This led to a scuffle among the three parties. One of the sisters picked up a chopper whilst the other picked up a bottle threatening her father to burst his head. The matter was reported and the defendants were arrested and charged. The father, Brain Singh, was also charged but did not appear in court. The 14-year-old told the court that the prosecutor’s facts were untrue, as it did not mention everything that happened. She added that the reason she pulled the chopper on her father was because he wanted to kill her sister. According to her, the man had said it would not be the first time he will go to jail but this time it would be for the two of them. The magistrate told the 14-year-old “at this age you should not be on the road in the wee hours of the morning, you should be at home studying and doing homework”. He went on to say that not because the VC is a bad father, they have the right to be rude and disrespectful to him, as he is their father and nothing can change that. He advised the sisters saying “at this time in life you should pay attention to your education – the court is not the place for you… aspire to come to court but not to be in the dock or standing where you are, instead aspire to be where I am, or the prosecutor or at the bar table”. All the charges against the two sisters were reprimanded and discharged. The magistrate ended by saying that “you are too young to be convicted, it will affect you for the rest of your life.”
