US software giant team signals interest in Guyana

OCTOBER 16, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Minister of State Joseph Harmon on Wednesday met with a team from EON Reality, said to be one of the largest global software service providers.
The team’s meeting with the Minister was facilitated by Paula Mohamed and included the Chairman of the company, Dan Lejerskar; Business Developers, Rick Serree and Rafael Pinto, and Anna Lejerskar.
Political Advisor, Fredrick Mc Wilfred was also present at the meeting.
Mohamed, a release from the Ministry of the Presidency said, felt the engagement was a very timely one, as there are a number of reviews and assessments ongoing with the aim of building capacity across a number of sectors locally.
Meanwhile, Lejerskar said his company is interested in setting up an interactive digital centre, which would have capacity building in knowledge transfer based on virtual reality.
Based on the meeting, the Chairman said that he is optimistic, given the reception to his team. He described Guyana as a “fertile ground to explore”.
According to the company’s website, EON Reality is a multinational, virtual reality and augmented reality software developer, headquartered in Irvine, California.
The company was founded by Lejerskar, Mikael Jacobsson and Mats W. Johansson in 1999.

These jokers in the afc/apnu really believe that Guyana is a hotbed of software development? Desperation is makes these people clutch at straws while the economy tanks. When they were in opposition they said they had the answers to Guyana's woes. Now they are in power we see zero being done to enhance the nation.

Obviously politicians are useless for the progress of Guyana. We have seen the PPP and their cronies. But, my goodness where did the APNU/AFC=PNC quickly resurrected theirs from. It took the PPP 23 years to put together their band of misfits. The PNC, just came out of the woodwork from the President's abode-The Ministry of the Presidency.

It is unfortunate these types of individuals clone themselves.

Druggie rest your jealous self.  Why would a chairman of a large company waste his time to fly to Guyana and meet with Harmon if he wasn't seriously considering?  This is clearly outsourcing, with the lower end tasks being switched to a lower cost location.  In fact I am told that others are also looking at Guyana.

So why don't you welcome the possibility that eventually Guyana might become more than just a low end call center location?  Clearly this will be a gradual step, if they do move ahead with this.

Barbados and Jamaica already have some less basic BPO work, so why can't Guyana aspire to this too?  Better than an economy based on selling speculative products, and high cost commodities into low price markets, and an unsustainable real estate bubble that was based on money laundering, drug running, gold smuggling and corruption.

Druggie is upset that there might be a remote possibility that APNU/AFC might even do something useful, and that people, other than those on the PPPs "Friends and Family" plan, might benefit.

You should not comment on subjects you are not familiar with.  Software development require a skill base, the last time I checked, your boy Granger has officially made UG a discredited university.  Where will these software engineers come from?  Even right here in the US when companies moves from one state to another, they have huge problems finding skilled workers, much less little Guyana.

Yes, we are all waiting for you to return to be chief software engineer for Alliance. Talk is cheap, let us see if this comes to fruition. My first take based on experience is that this is utter nonsense for a software company to set up shop here to develop software when they can do so cheaper in India where developers come a dime a dozen.

As it turns out, my assumptions were correct.

EON is not looking for software engineers. In fact they are looking for sales to set up a digital interactive center for teaching, not much different than when the PPP brought the Learning channel to Guyana.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lejerskar said his company is interested in setting up an interactive digital centre, which would have capacity building in knowledge transfer based on virtual reality.

Interactive Digital Centers

EON Reality’s Interactive Digital Centers provide education and training in Virtual Reality and interactive 3D technologies in the areas of Education, Industry, and Edutainment.  As a leader in the field of interactive 3D visualization, our Centers provide access to state-of-the-art Virtual Reality equipment, development lab, and virtual 3D learning platform that meet the growing demands of the Interactive Digital Media sector and capture emerging opportunities, both locally and globally.

By collaborating with local business, technology, and government partners, IDCs aim to generate an overall awareness, understanding, and belief in Virtual Reality solutions that stimulate the local economy and create greater educational value.  A key feature of the IDC is the EON Entrepreneur School, a comprehensive program aimed at developing the area’s workforce with skills in interactive and 3D technology including coding, design and development. EON Reality expects to produce young talent every year through its education and training system and develop an entrepreneurial base supported by a growing creative and digital industry.

With the 3D market estimated to reach 227 billion USD in 2017 and higher adoption rates of personal Virtual and Augmented Reality devices, innovative ideas and unique applications will be crucial to satisfy the growing worldwide demand for Virtual and Augmented Reality applications. To capture the huge VR/AR market potential in untapped market segments the IDC also consists of the EON Innovation Program, a twelve month entrepreneurship program that seeks to nurture innovative Virtual and Augmented Reality ideas and bring them to market via EON Reality’s worldwide sales, marketing, development, and support network.

Knowledge Transfer Benefits

Each IDC brings the following knowledge transfer benefits to its respective region:

  • Multiplier Effect – The IDC Hub can within 60 months enable an entire nation to learn up to 12 times faster, 100 entrepreneur students create VR/AR curriculum for thousands of end users within less than 36 months
  • Competitive Advantage – Local industries can access the latest technologies to gain a competitive advantage and transfer knowledge up to 12 times faster and improve quality assurance with up to 40%
  • Job Creation – Local partners can create a targeted localized offering for the regional market
  • Innovation – “Create an educational software that is as compelling as the best video game and as effective as a personal tutor.” – from “Grand Challenges for the 21st Century”, President Obama 2009 September
  • Engage and Motivate – Enable staff and students to use the latest interactive 3D technologies; create interesting and engaging learning experiences
  • Improve Retention – Engage and excite with an “I see, I do” approach. Perform training in a replica of a real-world environment –  Experiential Learning

Just a refresher for druggie that no one claimed that any one was looking for software engineers in Guyana.  In fact even the more advanced BPO locations in the Caribbean (Jamaica, DR, and Barbados) haven't reached that point yet.

But when your friends build high rise buildings, with 50% of the square footage unused, you think that this is progress, because really that was the only "development" which happened under the PPP.

Apparently you don't get it, EON is not looking to bring jobs to Guyana, they are looking to sell to the Guyanese public and Govt. The country needs jobs not more pariah businesses looking to squeeze money from the public. Already we see the Chinese contemplating closing down their stores as people ain't shopping as before under the afc/apnu.

Indeed they may be looking to sell products and we do need their products. Imagine they idea of a virtual Georgetown to scale in a machine with active controls to traffic signals etc one can actively thwart getaway drivers and control traffic etc. Simulations in class rooms on subjects where visualization helps. Also, we have to train programmers of every kind. You learned to program so any duffus can.

EON setting up shop in Guyana would be a plus to the country in the form of bringing much needed jobs. This is no business venture by EON with the intention of selling to Guyana. Guyana has no real buying power over any other country with only 3/4 million citizens and a vast majority in rural areas so how much can they buy? As the article states "Meanwhile, Lejerskar said his company is interested in setting up an interactive digital centre, which would have capacity building in knowledge transfer based on virtual reality". The center will most likely be used as a hub to launch products for the entire region.

That is what I though and was going to research the company. EON is a private company so their financials are not public records.

No one (except BGurd_See) said that EON was looking for software engineers. He is basically arguing against himself.

Still screaming for Nigerian juju curses on black Guyanese, while you PRETEND to be a man of God?

The pastor is a man of God. And it is not a good ting to speak ill of such a person. I am not a pastor suh I can curse from time to time. Behave u fooking self and stop wid this juju thing. U keep mentioning dem spirits dem might like u and cling onto to u. That is some misery u goan dey pan.

he most certainly is a man of the devil if he sanctions the wickedness of a racist cockroach like u

And I supposes u r not a racist. We are all racist. Not so long ago D2 stated his views on East Indians. He may not think he is a racist, but some Indoes do. Myself, he stated his experience. As for Cain, typical putagee, dem never like Indoes-we confuse them.

It is not my view. It is the reality. Indians have taboos against race mixing. They hold their women as the sentinels of t heir culture and place on them the burden of defending it by not marrying into other races.

Indians In guyana do not acknowledge the primacy of the state as the cradle of their culture. They think they got it whole cloth from Indian when you and I know we were outcasts there for 6000 years and in guyana we constituted a viable culture that recognized us as full Humans.

Go lie to yourself that this is not truth but It would be you deceiving yourself.

That is true. But we all live in North America and are quite familiar with what drives business ventures here. There is no reason to suggest that the same does not exist with their interest in Guyana. Take note of the words used by Dan Lejerskar "fertile grounds to explore" from a sales perspective.

They are setting up a center in Guyana which will provide jobs for Guyanese. They will use this center as a hub to launch products throughout the region. No one in their right mind would target Guyana as a market to improve their sales since we do not have the purchasing power necessary to support such a venture.

In that case, it is a good move for Guyana. Now they have to make it happen.

Suh, leh me understand this, Are u agreeing wid dem collie bois here, that claim u r a racist?

Individual citizens make up a country. If indoes were denied equal citizenship in the PNC era. How do u expect them to react. And this 6000 year story about India caste system has nothing to do with Guyana. Even as u claim to know, people intellect comes from God-suh being a dalit doan mean stupidity. And we did good in Guyana-being dalits and all. Imbeciles doan travel abroad or even think of it. They are captured. Untouchables strive to free demselves. Perhaps too many keep reminding themselves of their plight when in actual fact they slowly progress. Considering all adversities. All the way in Guyana, they are reminded of their subjugations.
