Filmfare Awards introduced in the year 1954 is the oldest and the most coveted trophy of the Hindi Film Industry also known as Bollywood. Out of more than 20 categories and trophies presented each year, the Filmfare Best Actor Award is something that the whole industry and fans look forward to. Its also the most fiercely competed and discussed category, as those nominated for the Best Actor award are usually a combination of immense popularity and talent.

The Filmfare Best Actor records

  • Dilip Kumar has been nominated 19 times and won 8 awards. The legend is also the only actor to win 3 back to back awards.
  • Shahrukh Khan has been nominated 30 times (all categories) and has won the Best Actor award 8 times, a record which he shares with Dilip Kumar.
  • Amitabh Bachchan has been nominated for a record 29 times but has won just 5 awards.
  • Hrithik Roshan has been nominated 9 times and has won 4 trophies. Hrithik is the first and only actor to win both the Best Actor and Best Debut awards in the same year (for Kaho Na Pyaar Hai). And the first actor to win both the Best Actor critics and popular award (for Koi Mil Gaya).
  • Rajesh Khanna has received 14 nominations and has won just 3.

The Filmfare record notwithstanding, Amitabh Bachan is hands-down the best Bollywood actor, ever, period.

Sharukh Khan is one-dimensional.

Dilip Kumar does not have the range of Amitab.

No one has Amitab's voice.

Speaking of Sharukh Khan, Amir Khan is the best male actor in his generation.

One should note that the Film Fare Awards started in 1954: Dilip Kumar was acting before 1947, it stands to reason to assume that had Film Fare Started in 1947 then Dilip would have copped another two or more awards taking his total to over ten, as films like Shaheed,  Mela, (1948) Andaz, Shabnam (1949) Baabul (1950) Deedar, Tarana (1951) were films to be reckoned with in terms of hits and success for its respective years. Had Dilip Kumar accululated 11 Film Fare Awards: That records would have been unbeatable.

Amitabh and Dilip were of different time period, someone of Dilip's time would undoubtedly tell you that Dilip was the best. And then someone from Amitabh period would tell you that Amitabh is the best. To each his/her own.

I would definately agree with you that Amitabh is the best ever, but some one who would go with the records will tell you that Amitabh had 5 whilst Dilip had 8* and could have been more had Film Fare Started in 1947. If we were to discuss acting speciality, we will come up with Dilip Kumar as the Tragedy King. Wish I could put Amitabh in the same category. But then again to each his/her own.

In a Blog Post, Amitabh was so generous (bigger than life) whe he has described Dilip Kumar as the Greatest Actor ever.

Kari, I think that it would be more appropiate to label Amitabh and Dilip as Critics would acclaimed both amongs't the greatest actors in the history of the Hindi Film Industry.
