Ri, Shaan was Mazhar debut film....he first got noticed when he made his debut in the 1980 film Shaan. He then appeared in nearly 40 Hindi films playing villain and supporting roles.

He married actress Zeenat Aman in 1985 and they had two sons, Azaan and Zahaan. They remained married until he died of Kidney failure at the age of 45 in 1998.

He had turned to directing and made the multi-starrer Hindi film Gang which took 10 years to complete. The film finally released two years after his death in 2000.
