The Story

Monu ( Mohan) and Sonu (Sohan) are the two sons of a police inspector. The kids excel in boxing. Their father gets killed by a goon following orders from Ranjit ( played by Premnath). Mohan kills the goon and takes refuge in a car boot. Years later Sohan goes on to become a CID officer called Sohan Kumar, who solves his cases taking up different guises.

He takes the identity of Johny a petty thief and gets himself in Jail, befriends Heera ( enacted by Jeevan) and goes to solve a case wooing Rekha ( Hema) and finding the criminal.

PM lauds Dev Anand, the most enduring romantic.



New Delhi, Two birthday boys. Two journeys: one to the height of political glory and the other to the blazing firmament of showbiz stardom. As Dev Anand, the evergreen hero of Indian cinema, turned 84 Wednesday, he could not have asked for a better gift than lavish praises from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with whom he shares his birthday.

Flying high on dreams and "romancing with life" - the title of his memoirs - Dev Anand, dressed in a green jacket and holding a red rose in his hands, looked youthful and sprightly as ever - "a restless spirit in love with life", in his own words as Manmohan Singh launched his book at his 7 Race Course residence.

True to his irrepressible spirit, Dev Anand chose to anchor the book launch event himself and walked across to Congress president Sonia Gandhi with a rose in his hands, praying and wishing that she will keep alive the legacy of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru - the man who loved to sport a red rose in the buttonhole of his jackets.

"This is a very very ordinary man, but perhaps in a certain extraordinary way," said the legendary actor, impresario, and star-maker known for romancing some of the most beautiful divas in Indian films.

Manmohan Singh was generous with his praise of the man he described as "one of the most enduring romantics in the last half-a-century" and "the tallest leader of the Hindi film industry".

"At 84, he is not only young at heart, but also youthful to look at. I am sure that for several generations of fans, he will always be remembered as a delightfully romantic and endearing artist," said the prime minister.

"Indian cinema discovered the immortal Dev Anand. He rose to be one of the trinity who ruled the heart of every Indian - Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand. He has possibly acted with every top heroine over five decades - from Suraiya and Waheeda Rahman to Madhubala and Zeenat Aman.

"Dev Anandji's life is a tribute to the world of opportunity and creativity that the Indian film industry has come to represent," said Manmohan Singh, who turned 75 Wednesday.

In his touching tribute, the prime minister alluded to the rags and riches story of the iconic film star, known for films like "Guide", "Hum Dono", "Hare Rama, Hare Krishna" and "Prem Pujari", who had to suffer deprivation and dislocation of the Partition before he migrated to India from Lahore.

The prime minister also showered praise on the Hindi film industry for "successfully achieving the emotional integration of this vast and diverse land of ours".

"This unique mix of conversational Hindi from across the country, popularised by the film industry, has become the thread that weaves us together," he said.

Saying that the emotive appeal of Indian films outstrip that of Hollywood, which is a bigger business, in the world, the prime minister said, "more people laugh and shed tears, more people sing and cheer watching an Indian film"

"From the islands of the Pacific to those of the Atlantic, from the southernmost tip of Africa to the icy deserts of Serbia, from the towns of West Africa to the cities of East Asia, from the suburbs of North America to villages across Asia - around the world, across the globe, the sun never sets on Indian films."

The prime minister couldn't resist quoting a popular song from Dev Anand's film "Hum Dono" - "Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya..." - as he held the actor's life as an inspiration for a stronger and more creative India.

"Dev Anand's life mirrors India's own progress. Over 60 years ago, when he started acting in films India was a poor and backward country. Today, India is among the world's front-ranking nations," he said.

"We still have to win the war against poverty, ignorance and disease. But today, we can say with a much greater degree of confidence and assurance that we will indeed win this war," he said.

The only known surviving print of the rarely-seen English version of the Bollywood movie Guide is in the possession of Dev Anand - and he may just agree to release it one day for public viewing, the evergreen superstar disclosed.

Guide, based on a novel by RK Narayan was made in two versions in 1965 - the Hindi one was directed by Dev Anand's brother Vijay Anand and the Hollywood one by Tad Danielewski. American novelist Pearl S. Buck, a Nobel laureate, co-produced the English movie with Dev Anand and wrote its script.

The English version had an alternative title, Survival. The idea was to introduce Dev Anand to English-speaking audiences.

Although the Hindi version, co-starring Waheeda Rehman, is considered a Bollywood landmark, the English one has rarely been publicly seen in India, having been withdrawn hastily after its US release spawned indifferent reviews.

However, Dev Anand, in London for the launch of his autobiography Romancing with Life told IANS Sunday that he had what is possibly the only surviving print of the film.

"Pearl S Buck is dead, and the American laboratory which had a print closed down long ago. But I have one print with me," Dev Anand told IANS after launching his book in the presence of a number of dignitaries at the Nehru Centre in London Sunday evening.

Will he consider releasing the English version for public viewing? "Let me see, let me see," Dev Anand, 84, said with his trademark mischievous smile, his eyes twinkling.

The English version was actually the first one that was shot, and it is faithful to the adult theme of the book, which deals with adultery.

After it flopped at the US box-office, Dev Anand decided to remake it in Hindi but watered down the adult content of the original novel. Vijay Anand was so shocked to read the original script, he is said to have twice turned down the offer to direct it before finally relenting.

Jaya Bachchan thanks Dev Anand for 'rejecting Zanjeer'

Legendary actor Dev Anand , who's amazing acting enthralled the viewers over half-a-century, has come in praise for "rejecting a role", which later kickstarted the career of mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan .

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan publicly thanked Dev Anand in London Sunday night for turning down the lead role in Prakash Mehra 's film Zanjeer 25 years ago, which was then offered to a struggling Amitabh Bachchan, her husband.

The movie went on to make history at the box office, making Amitabh a star with a popular title "angry young man."

Jaya was launching the autobiography of Dev Anand titled 'Romancing With Life' at the Nehru Centre where the 'evergreen actor' was complimented by several speakers.

But Jaya, who played the lead female role in the 1973 film, was in a reminiscent mood and thanked Dev Anand "heartily", for "you gave up Zanjeer".

Dubai, Nov 15 (IANS) Bollywood legend Dev Anand said his life has been like a movie screenplay, which is why he has written his autobiography 'Romancing with Life' in the same manner.

'My life has been like a screenplay... never a dull moment. That is why I have written the book like a screenplay. You will not find any dull page here,' the 84-year-old star of classics like 'Guide', 'Jewel Thief' and 'Taxi Driver', who is here to promote the book, said at a press conference Thursday.

The biography was released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, on the actor's 84th birthday Sep 26. Subsequently, it was launched in functions across the world in places like Stockholm, Frankfurt, London, New Jersey, New York and Atlanta. Dubai is the actor's latest stopover.

'This book is not a biography nor is it any public relations exercise. It is an autobiography in the true sense of the term. You have to open up your life to write a book like this. When you read this, maybe you will get to know a few things the world doesn't know about Dev Anand,' he said.

Stating that the 438-page work is a candid and honest effort, the actor said, 'Even my wife and children didn't know what I was writing about.'

Asked if the book gave all details of his various romantic link-ups with well-known actresses, 'Dev Saab', as he is popularly known, said, 'The title is 'Romancing with Life'. I have romanced with life. I have romanced with sorrows, I have romanced with happiness. This is what the book is all about.'

Inevitably, the question of 'What is the secret of your energy?' came up.

His reply: 'Involvement! My involvement with work. When you stay involved, you stay excited.'

This is the first time in his 60-year career that the star has come to this region.

'I don't know why (I have not come here before). I guess the occasion never came. Anyway, I am finally here. It is a beautiful place. The buildings, the roads... Dubai is amazing,' he said.

The actor, who is working on a new film on police corruption and another English project set in Croatia, said that his autobiography would be translated into Hindi, Urdu and Bengali, among other languages, simultaneously with the soft cover launch of the English version six months later.

'This book has not ended. I have not ended. The last chapter of this book is still going on,' the evergreen star said.

It has been a while since the book Romancing with Life was released. But the autobiographical work by actor, director and auteur Dev Anand, continues to amuse people. The Chennai editor of a leading entertainment magazine remarked, "We have been told it is full of sex," Another editor from Mumbai dismissed the book "as an old man's fancy."

We beg to differ. It is full of sex, scandals, celluloid magic and an indefatigable Dev Anand, who fills your senses page after page after page. The book, disappointing in its many typos and badly constructed phrases, photographs with incomplete captions, is still a fascinating window to the world of Hindi cinema in the post Independence era.

When the Taj hotel near Gateway of India was where you romanced your lady loves and hosted the grandest parties, when international travel was a thing of honour and when the industry nurtured some of the greatest talents who produced the most endearing classics of Indian cinema.

The book traces Dev Anand's journey from his hometown in Pakistan to the heights of his power as an actor, a star. It is narrated as if it's a potboiler, replete with picture-perfect frames (in which Dev Anand is always what you'd be looking at) gorgeous women (his irrepressible romanticism is part of urban folklore) and details of ambitious projects that often destroyed the makers.

If you think the book gives you a glimpse of the real Dev Anand, you'd be mistaken. It is Dev Anand's grand project, that tells you how even as a boy he could do no wrong, how as a lover he was the most passionate, as an actor the best, as a star, the starriest. And yes, did he have style! All this, told exactly the way he has carried himself over the years, both on the screen and off it.

Read the passages in which he describes his encounter with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (in which he tells us exactly how he carried a rose for him, and his ego battle with the first prime minister). Or for that matter, his interaction with Pearl S Buck and RK Narayan for Guide and his artful flirting with the likes of Shirley Maclaine and Mumtaz. Every time, every event, however big or small, is narrated from Dev Anand's point of view. After all, with him around, could there be another?

So we are told how the world loves him, from the army jawans to taxi drivers, from journalists to hippies, from nubile young things to the world weary and the lovelorn, all those who have been a part of his innumerable films. He tells you how he is the best, most loved, most worshipped. But what is heart wrenching is perhaps the utmost conviction with which he tells you that the fan frenzy and the hero worship continues to this day. So striking is his naivette, you will not have a heart to tell him that times have changed.

the juiciest bits, about his fascination with women, which even at this age, remains unabated. A laundry list of the women he has launched, loved and lusted about, is amazing. Suraiya, Tina Munim, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Richa Sharma and many other such starlets walk in and out of the book with great regularity. There are also some nameless ones, with whom he shared a more sensuous relationship. Women are always his conquest. They, he declares, have always found him irresistible. As he says in his obsession with Zeenat: "she was a painting and I was the painter."

He has had his share of heartbreaks, whether with Suraiya or Zeenat Aman. In fact, the passage about how Zeenat dumped him for Raj Kapoor is quite touching. But no setback is a setback for this incredibly optimistic man. After every heartbreak -- box office disaster or outright rejection by the newer generation of filmmakers and actors or the audience -- he is back on his feet. He draws inspiration from everything and everyone. And that perhaps is the key to his prolific and at times self-destructive creative streak.

As the man sums it up in the last lines of the book,
"Gaata Rahe Mera Dil
My Heart is singing, like it always has been
This is a beautiful world."

Dev Anand, Pran receive Dadasaheb Phalke honour

Bollywood's evergreen actor Dev Anand was on Friday conferred the Phalke Ratna award in Mumbai while iconic villain Pran was honoured with the Phalke Icon and Legendary Cine Versatile Cine Star award.

The honours were given away on the 141st birth anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke, considered the father of Indian movies.

"Whenever I close my eyes and try to recollect, I see all the legends of Bollywood those who have contributed immensely to Indian cinema. I salute them for all their efforts," Dev Anand, known for giving hits like Guide, Jewel Thief and Hare Rama Hare Krishna, told reporters after receiving the honour.

Pran, who came in a wheelchair, too poured his heart out. "I feel extremely honoured to receive this highly esteemed award. I thank the industry for showering their love and support," said Pran, who is still remembered for his roles in Madhumati and Ram Aur Shyam.

The Bollywood romantic hero and fashion icon Dev Anand has died, age 88, prompting a flood of tributes yesterday from across India's Hindi-language cinema industry, according to AFP.

The Press Trust of India news agency said in a report from London that Anand, who with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar reigned supreme in the golden age of Bollywood, died of a heart attack in the British capital on Saturday. He had been in the city for a medical check-up and had been in poor health for the past few days, the agency said, quoting anonymous family sources.

Often compared to the US actor Gregory Peck because of his matinée idol looks, "Debonair Dev", never without his trademark scarf, was best known for his boundless energy and passion for film. He starred in more than 100 movies, made his debut in Hum Ek Hain (We Are One) alongside his friend Guru Dutt in 1946, and was still working well into old age, starring in Chargesheet — made by his own production company — this year.

"I cannot live without my films, my cinema and my work," he told bollywoodhungama.com in 2007. "For me, until I die, moviemaking and acting will always be my first and last love.
