2008 cold case solved…‘Hit man’ killed Essequibo businessman on relative’s orders

APRIL 26, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

-was promised $6M, house and land, but only paid $5,000

“Your relative send me to kill you…”
Those were the last words that Essequibo businessman Habiboodean reportedly heard on February 15, 2008,

Murdered: Habiboodean, 77

Murdered: Habiboodean, 77

before a ‘hit-man’ brutally ended his life on the orders of a disgruntled woman who had coveted the old man’s assets.
Detectives had those chilling words repeated to them yesterday, while listening to the confession of a 28-year-old Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo resident, who allegedly committed the deed on a promise that he would receive “$6M, a house and land” to kill Habiboodean.
But the plotters reportedly only gave him $5,000 and told him to ‘f—k off’ when he asked for the rest of his payment.
Habiboodean, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, died at a hospital after being badly beaten in his home on February 15, 2008. Relatives had said that the killers took nothing.
Police had charged the victim’s former employee, Terry Lewton, 38, of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, and Bibi Nazeela Habiboodean, now 50, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, for Mr. Habiboodean’s murder, but those charges were discharged due to insufficient evidence.
But in a stroke of good fortune, police last week detained 28-year-old Linden Lewis, called ‘Bullet,’ and four others, for the murder of Mohamed Munir, 75, and his wife Bibi Jamila Munir, 69, who were burnt to death in their Good Hope, East bank Essequibo home.
It was while he was in custody that investigators learned that he might have more than a passing knowledge of Habiboodean’s death.
Police said that while being interrogated on that case yesterday, Lewis admitted to killing Habiboodeen, while complaining that he had never received full payment for the job.
According to the suspect’s claims, it all began sometime in 2008, when a female relative of the elderly businessman complained that other relatives of Habiboodeen had received properties and other assets, while she had received nothing.
The relative reportedly stated that she wanted the old man’s fuel station, cash he had in a bank, and assets he had in Georgetown.
She reportedly then hired Lewis to kill Mr. Habiboodeen.
Five individuals, including Lewis, reportedly sat down at a  Vergenoegen, hideout, East Bank Essequibo, to plan the old man’s death.
Lewis said that the plotters promised to pay him $6M, and provide him with “a house and land.”
On February 15, 2008, the relative reportedly helped Lewis to gain access to Mr. Habiboodeen’s house.
When the ‘hit-man’ entered, the elderly businessman’s house he was sitting in a chair.
“What you doing here?” Mr. Habiboodeen reportedly asked the intruder.
Lewis reportedly replied: “—— (name given) send me to kill you.” He then reportedly struck the 76-year-old repeatedly. Mr. Habiboodeen later succumbed in a hospital.
But Lewis said that instead of giving him the “$6M, house and land” they had promised, the plotters gave him $5,000 “to go into the bush.”
Lewis reportedly fled to the interior, where he remained for two years. It was during this time that police arrested and charged the victim’s former employee, Terry Lewton, and Bibi Nazeela Habiboodean for murder. They were subsequently discharged.
When Lewis returned from the interior in 2010, he approached the plotters and was told that the case had been “dismissed.”
But when the ‘hit man’ asked for his “$6M, house and land,” one of the plotters reportedly told him that all the money had been spent on lawyers. The plotter reportedly then told the ‘hit-man’ to ‘f—off.’
Lewis said that he did not pursue the matter.
Police indicated yesterday that they will expand their investigation this week.

What is notable is that there is no mention of the recovery of the raw gold stolen because it is in the pocket of the police. It is open season on miners, they dig up the gold, the pnc operatives rob them then the pnc police take away the gold from the robbers and put it in their pockets. This is motivation for finally doing their jobs as they claim the spoils.

Shop owner shot during brazen daylight robbery

APRIL 29, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

– Police hunt woman among three suspects
As if losing his wife several months ago wasn’t enough grief, a 42-year-old shop owner was shot around 11:30 hrs yesterday during a brazen robbery at his Lot 295 Savage Street, North East La Penitence, Georgetown business place, located at the bottom flat of the two-storey premises.

Shot shop owner: David Sukhnandan

Shot shop owner: David Sukhnandan

David Sukhnandan sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot and is hospitalised at a private hospital.
According to information received, Sukhnandan was shot when a woman entered his shop and pretended to be a customer by ordering a bottle of cooking gas. When Sukhnandan opened his shop door to hand over the gas, two men barged into his premises.
While the men terrorised Sukhnandan for cash, the woman, according to reports, was busy packing a bag with groceries. The trio then escaped in a waiting motor car after shooting their victim.
Police were able to obtain the vehicle’s number plate.
At the man’s home yesterday, his mother, Neowrangee Sukhnandan said that she was upstairs when she heard her son screaming in the shop. “Right away I know it was thief because it is not the first time.”
The woman said that she opened a trap door in the upper flat which leads down to the shop and saw the two men firing shots at her son. “I heard like four shots and when I open the door, I see when they shooting him,” the woman said.
Fighting to hold back tears, the older Sukhnandan said that when she saw her son being shot at, for a moment she thought that he was dead, and she hurriedly closed the trap door to prevent the robbers from gaining access to the upper flat.
“I was begging them to leave my son…I was begging and praying,” Neowrangee Sukhnandan said. She added that only last November her son lost his wife, Seema Sukhnandan.
The woman said that she had actually lost track of the amount of times bandits robbed their business place. Before her daughter-in-law died, bandits went into the shop and shot her during a robbery some years back.
Also, Neowrangee Sukhnandan recalled that on October 31, last, when Halloween would have been celebrated in some countries, four men, dressed in costumes tried to gain entry into her home.
“My grandson was outside and he see the men in their costumes and suspect they were bandits, and he run in the house and pulled in the door, so they didn’t get to come in,” the woman recalled.
At the scene, neighbours gathered outside the shop after they heard what had happened. One woman said that she heard the gunshots but “thought it was squib”. Another woman suggested that it is about time the Sukhnandans get surveillance cameras since they are being targeted too often.
Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
Only Wednesday, a businessman shot a bandit in his face after he had broken and entered his electronics store on Croal Street, Georgetown. The shot bandit managed to escape from the scene, but later turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.
That matter is also being investigated.

Three of the bandits escaped with an undisclosed sum of local and foreign currency they took from the casino as well as money and valuables they took from patrons during the half-hour ordeal.
But police captured a fourth bandit as he was trying to escape through a back door when the ranks arrived. They also impounded a car that the attackers left behind.
Police retrieved a shotgun that the gunmen had taken from a security guard and another firearm that one of the bandits had disposed of before escaping.
At press time last night, police were hot on the trail of the rest of the gang.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed that the detained gunman, known as ‘Dougla’, has been cooperating with investigators.
The suspects are believed to be from Onderneeming, Essequibo, Independence Boulevard, and a third from Kitty and South Ruimveldt.
“The police have information about who the people are. The homes of the suspects were searched and wet clothing was found at two locations. The occupants were questioned, and they indicated to the police that the individuals did not sleep there last night (Thursday); they (the suspects) went there early today, (Friday) changed and left.
“We also have video footage of the entire incident and in reviewing we saw one suspect conceal a weapon (at the scene) and we retrieved that weapon, as well as the shotgun from the suspect we have in custody.”
Among those wounded are Police Lance Corporal Andrew Richardson of Impact Base, who was shot to his abdomen; Eon Garraway was shot in  his left hand, James Gregory sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot; Orlando Knights was shot in the left hand and Udairan Sookraj sustained injuries to his right hand.
Melissa Ferguson, Jermaine Mason and Roshel Fraser were assaulted during the ordeal.
There are indications that Lance Corporal Richardson and staffer, James Gregory, may have accidentally shot each other.
“James was clearing out the kitchen and same time he (the police) went into the kitchen and the police had a brown coat over his uniform so when James hear the door open and he turn around, the policeman shot at him and he shot at the policeman,” a hotel staffer said.
The wounded policeman was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while the staffers who were shot were treated at Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital.
A police release stated that the attack began when four men with firearms entered the casino and discharged several rounds into the air.
After relieving a security guard of his shotgun and ammunition, the gunmen ordered patrons and staff to lie on the ground. They then took the security guard to the cashier’s cage where the cashier was also held at gunpoint and relieved of an undisclosed sum of foreign and local currency.
The men arrived at the hotel in a white vehicle bearing a fake number plate, PRR 2545 and three of them managed to escape on foot. Police were able to apprehend one of the suspects, who was left behind in the casino.
Police also impounded the car, which was left at the scene. Video footage taken by a reporter showed the licence number PPP 4111, imprinted on the vehicle wind-screen.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the vehicle was carjacked last Sunday after taking two men to Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
Video footage taken by a reporter after the attack showed patrons still on the ground, and one terrified woman weeping as she hid under a table, as police ranks, including ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken,  scoured the casino for the gunmen.
The ranks are also shown lifting a barman who was shot in the hand. They are later seen with the gunman who was captured at the scene.
The security guard who was relieved of his firearm said that “about five of them” come up to him and told him not to move.
“Dem man seh pass de shotgun, (and) dem man tek away the shotgun and tell me sit down.
“If I did shoot, dead sure I woudda deh pon de ground, but I woudda kill one of dem,” the guard said.
Another guard said that he was attacked while he was at a guard hut.
One patron said that he was inside the casino playing on one of the machines when the men stormed the building.
“All I hear was ‘everybody go down on the floor’ and I thought it was a mad man run in but when I watch, I see a man with a gun,” the man said.
He added that everyone in the casino followed the men’s instructions.  I turn and see everybody lying on the ground and I decide to lie on the ground, too.
“I was on the floor and I was hurrying to take out my money to put it in my boots and same time the guy pass and say ‘fat man what you doing there? Pass your phone,’ and he asked what else I got and when I said nothing, he go away,” the man recalled.
The patron and some others have vowed not to go back into a casino.
A woman also said that she had just won some $20,000 when the gunmen entered the premises.
According to one of the hotel’s taxi drivers, the men pulled up alongside his vehicle and four men exited with guns.
“This vehicle rolled up and these men exited. All of them had guns in their hands. They stick us up and put us to walk in front of them to go into the casino. They walk to the door and take away the security guards gun.”
He said that once they were inside, the men started to open fire before ordering everyone to lie on the floor.
“They robbed the casino and everyone who was in there. After some time, the one who was guarding everyone shouted ‘time up’ and two of them followed him while one of them was still at the back,” the taxi driver said.
He added that one of the gunmen told the other two robbers who were already at the front preparing to escape that the fourth man was still at the back, but the three men continued with their escape plan.
Kaieteur News understands that when the police arrived at the scene, the fourth gunman was struggling to get the casino’s back door open.
“The back door is funny. You cannot open the door from the inside…you have to go all the way around to the outside and opened it so that is why he couldn’t escape,” a hotel employee said.
One patron told the police that yesterday’s incident was “like a horror movie.”

The traumatised woman said the men tied up her brother, and one of them stood guard over him outside while the other two demanded that she lead them to the money upstairs.

She said that as they approached the door, she forgot where she had left the keys because she was traumatized by fright, and the men started to hit her in the head with the gun as she fumbled.

The woman said she pleaded with the men not to hurt her, and called on her sister-in-law to open the door.

“After me sister-in-law open the door, they point a gun on she and said ‘don’t say a word’. Me carry them upstairs to me bedroom and open the wardrobe and give them everything me had.”

Shirkissoon said she gave the men over $2 million in cash, which was her business money, and jewellery she had accumulated over the years, worth over $1.5 million.
The men also took $50,000 she had in her possession, which was to be used for the day; and, not satisfied, they ransacked the house looking for more.

While this was ongoing, Samuel Fernandes of Bulletwood Street, Rose Hall Town, who works with the Shirkisoons on weekends, came in as usual to assist with preparation for the market, and he saw the tied-up man outside with the bandit over him. He raised an alarm and a scuffle ensued with him and the bandit. He managed to pull off the bandit’s mask, and was shot in the shoulder.

The bandits then fled, taking the booty with them. Fernandes remains a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

Attack on Ramada Princess Hotel…Casino guard set up robbery

MAY 1, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

-told gang “less security and more money after 2.00 A.M”

The gang behind last Friday’s brazen attack at the Ramada Princess Hotel had help from a casino guard, who provided the gunmen with intricate details of the hotel’s operations, including the ideal time to strike.

Police with captured gunman Wayne Griffith.

The security guard, who is a former national athlete, was detained yesterday after Wayne Griffith, the gunman who was captured at the scene, provided police with the identities of the rest of the gang.  Four of the five gunmen were still at large yesterday.
The suspects are reportedly from Onderneeming, Essequibo, Independence Boulevard and a third from Kitty and South Ruimveldt.
Police had retrieved wet clothing from two homes that they searched on Friday.
Kaieteur News understands that the detained guard has stated that the heist was planned some two weeks ago.

“Less security and more money after 2.00 A.M”
It was around that time that one of the gunmen asked the security guard to provide him with the details about the security operation at the casino.
The guard reportedly told the gang that there were “fewer people, less security and more money” at the casino after 02.00 hrs.
He also informed his associates that only two armed guards would be at the gate after midnight.
Prior to carrying out the attack, Wayne Griffith, the captured gunman, did surveillance of the casino.
The plan was for the robbers would split up the loot at an Albouystown residence.
On Thursday night, the ‘inside man’ came off duty an hour before midnight. He then met with the rest of the gang and they rehearsed the attack.
When it was close to 03.00 hrs, the guard indicated that that was the ideal time to “hit” the casino. He reportedly then went home.
The heist, carried out by four masked men,   apparently went as planned, except for the fact that the same gunman who had done the surveillance on the business place got trapped at the back of the premises.
A police release stated that the attack began at around 03.30 hrs, when four men with firearms entered the casino and discharged several rounds into the air.
Police were able to apprehend Wayne Griffith, who was nabbed while trying to escape through a back door.
Police also impounded the car, which was left at the scene.
They also retrieved a shotgun that the bandits had taken from one of the guards, and another firearm that the gunmen disposed of after the robbery.
A policeman and five hotel staffers were wounded during the ordeal.
Lance Corporal Andrew Richardson of Impact Base, was shot to his abdomen; Eon Garraway was shot in his left hand, James Gregory sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot; Orlando Knights was shot in the left hand and Udairan Sookraj sustained injuries to his right hand.
The gunmen also assaulted staffers Melissa Ferguson, Jermaine Mason and Roshel Fraser.
There are indications that Lance Corporal Richardson and staffer, James Gregory, may have accidentally shot each other.
The Video footage taken after the attack showed patrons still on the ground and one terrified woman weeping as she hid under a table, as police ranks, including ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken scoured the casino for the gunmen.
The ranks are also shown lifting a barman who was shot in the hand. They are later seen with captured gunman Wayne Griffith.
A security guard who was relieved of his shotgun had said that “about five of them” come up to him and told him not to move.
After some time, the one who was guarding everyone shouted ‘time up’ and two of them followed him, while one of them was still at the back,” the taxi driver said.

Mystery arsonist spreads fear at Lethem

MAY 6, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

– torches minibus, throws devices into two houses
Who is setting those fires at Tabatinga, Lethem?
That’s what terrified residents of the community are trying to find out, after a mystery arsonist torched a minibus late last month and threw incendiary devices into the bedrooms of an elderly woman and a Health official early yesterday. Fortunately, in both instances, the victims of yesterday’s attacks managed to put the fires out.
The culprit, who attacks just before dawn, first struck on April 27, at the home of Bernadene Gomes. Mrs. Gomes said that she awoke at around 03.00 hrs that day to the sight of “big flames” in her yard.
“When we got up, smoke was in the house and the bus was on fire.” She said that the vehicle, BPP 1126, was destroyed. The bus was worth some $8M and she had the vehicle for four years. Her property is fenced.
Mrs. Gomes said that she could think of no one who would want to harm her family. She admitted that the strange attack has left her unable to sleep soundly.
“I keep going over this thing. You can’t sleep, we are living in fear right now.”
It is believed that the same individual struck twice yesterday.
One victim, 68-year-old Bibi Ann Austin, lives three houses away from Mrs. Gomes.
Mrs. Austin said that she had gone to her washroom, then returned to bed, only to awake at around 04.30 hrs to find that her mosquito net and some of her louvre panes were on fire.
She managed to extinguish the flames, and later heard her dog chasing someone “up the road.” The pensioner said that she informed ranks at the Lethem Police Station of the attack, but the ranks never came.
Like her neighbour, she has no idea why someone would want to harm her.
Then, about 30 minutes later, the arsonist attacked at the home of Regional Environmental Officer Juanita Jerrick-Williams.
Mrs. Williams said that she was in bed with three of her five children. The health officer said that she was just getting out of bed to pray, when she felt “something wet” on her back.
“By the time I turned around, I saw fire on my bed and mosquito net. I saw a shadow running to an unfinished building next to me, but we were too busy putting out the fire.”
No one was hurt, but the hair of her 12-year-old daughter was singed.
She said that the police came and saw footprints in her yard.
Mrs. Williams said that she has worked in Lethem for some 24 years, and has no problems with anyone.
Police sources at Lethem confirmed that they are investigating the reports.

Armed bandits rob local exporter near Police station

In the midst of the Guyana Police Force declaring a 19 per cent decrease in serious crimes, a popular exporter was robbed early Tuesday morning near the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Reports indicate that businessman Doodnauth, also known as “Mango man” was held at gunpoint at about 10:45h obliquely opposite the Ruimveldt Police Station.
According to the businessman, he was relieved of $2.9 million and believed that the gunmen followed him from a local city bank.
He related to Guyana Times that he and his wife went to a city bank on Robb Street and while on their way home, they stopped at a store near the Ruimveldt Police Station.
It was during this stop that the gunmen pounced on them.
According to Doodnauth, he was hesitant at first to hand over his bag but the bandits punched him and then grabbed the bag containing the cash and other important documents.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that the businessman’s wife, who is a frequent customer at the store, went into the shop and left her husband in the car.
“The female occupant of the car entered the store while the man remained in the vehicle when two men approached the car. The entire scene lasted roughly 30 seconds,” the eyewitness recalled.
The two men, who were described as “tall and of African descent” then made their escape in a white Toyota car.
They were both wearing striped T-shirts and short pants.
The incident was reported to the Police and an investigation was launched. However, no arrests were made up to press time.

Corentyne gas station guards robbed

As law enforcement officers in Berbice map out a plan to put a halt to robberies in the county, two security guards at M Ali and Son Service Station at Strand were on Tuesday night tied up and robbed.
Reports indicate that the perpetrators used a screwdriver to stick up the guards and then bound them. They were relieved of an undisclosed quantity of phone cards and $30,000.
Also on Tuesday night, two men armed with cutlasses robbed a Port Mourant businesswoman. Reports indicate that the masked men broke into the home of the businesswoman and took $60,000 from her.
Less than 24 hours before, two armed men, also masked, attacked a businessman two doors away, and relieved him of a quantity of cash and jewellery.
Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam addressing the issue of crime on the Corentyne said there was a criminal group which operated out of Free Yard, Port Mourant.
He said the group had been active in March but had gone dormant. His comments came as he addressed concerns of residents in Rose Hall Town, at a meeting on Wednesday evening. “There is no way you ought to accept what is happening in your community,” the Commander told residents.
He explained that there was another gang which operated out of Rose Hall, “And they bring people into Rose Hall. They operate in twos or in threes to commit robberies.”
Recently, a man known to the Police disarmed and shot a Police Officer hitting his bulletproof vest.
One resident at Wednesday’s meeting who witnessed the incident said the act was puzzling. “The officer was begging his colleague for his firearm. The second Police refused to give the first one the gun and I believe that if he had actually handed over the gun to the other Police the criminal would have been shot, but for reasons unknown the gun was never handed over.”
According to the Commander, the Police are not having an easy task even after placing persons before the courts. “Now the Magistrates are not inclined to remand prisoners based on what happened at Camp Street, so we put them in and they come back out to do the same things again. They don’t mind, the criminals would find money for a lawyer and money for bail. They go in and they come back out and we start the same cycle all over again. The community has to help Berbice,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir Humanitarian Mission Skills Training Centre and Counselling Centre at Port Mourant, Pandit Surish Sugrim noted that the way Police Officers in Georgetown handle crime was different from the way officers in Berbice handle crime.
He said there was need for more Police vehicles because of the long distance between police stations on the Corentyne. “Police alone cannot solve crime, as a community, we need to work together.” He suggested that there be more frequent Police patrols in the community.
Sugrim, however, questioned why all Police Officers were not equipped with firearms and handcuffs as in some Caribbean states.
Assistant Commissioner Amsterdam said if Police Officers used their guns in an indiscriminate way, there would be consequences they would have to face: “We are arming our ranks while they are on duty and there are some ranks – depending on where they are stationed – [who] have personal firearms,” he said.
According to the Commander, more vehicles are expected to come to the Division shortly. However, he could not promise that the Rose Hall Police Outpost would be getting its own patrol vehicle.
One resident, who is a budding social worker, questioned the reason for not having in place a programme to reform prisoners. “They need help and I believe that some of them can change their attitude if they get the right help that they need… When they do come out [from prison] is there a follow-up check to see what they are doing?” she questioned.
Most of the armed robberies committed along the Lower and Central Corentyne over the past three weeks have targeted the business community.

East La Penitence police under fire for perceived inaction

MAY 8, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

A Lodge resident is alleging that police officers from the East La Penitence Police Station refused to arrest the assailant of a battered man.
The victim, Richard Washington, who was assaulted about his body, is currently in the Georgetown Public Hospital with an injured arm and lacerations to his face and neck.
According to Ingrid Baird, of Princes Street, Lodge, Georgetown, Washington is a close family friend who often visits her son, much to the plight of neighbours in the area.
She told Kaieteur News that she was home when she saw a man called “Miggy” push Washington into
a nearby drain not far from her house. She said as she drew closer she saw some other men in the area rush to get involved in a brawl.
“And if you see how they tackling him and stabbing he up,” the woman said.
She said that when she came upon the scene, the men had already left Washington, covered in blood—unable to make a sound. The woman who expressed concern for the young man said that she believes that they were trying to kill him.
He was subsequently rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital by family members. She recounted that she returned home from the hospital to find all of her windows shattered in her house and broken glass bottles littering the kitchen floor, the living room and bedroom. She also observed broken bottles in her yard.
Baird told this newspaper that some men in her neighbourhood have been relentlessly harassing her and her working son, Jermaine Pollard, since they moved in two years ago. “They keep saying how they gonna murder me and my son; they threatening we telling we got to move out cause we are not Lodge people.”
Baird, 45, said that she had reported instances where these accused attackers barged into her yard and pushed her down. She said as recent as three weeks ago, a man called “Roger” stabbed her son’s girlfriend in her shoulder on her way to the shop to buy groceries for breakfast.
Both of these incidents she had reported at the East La Penitence Police Station but no one has been held responsible for the offences.
The woman, who said that she is a peaceful resident in her community, claims the police officers at the station only took statements but no thorough investigations were carried out.
“And I fed up; I have no peace in my house cause I keep believing someone gonna come in and kill me and my son.”
The woman said that only one person among the many of Washington’s attackers has been picked up by the police since the incident.
Despite these comments, Kaieteur News was reliably informed that police ranks are making strides into investigating the matter.

A former cop turned taxi driver was shot dead by the police after he allegedly pointed a gun at ranks and tried to escape after he was arrested for an alleged robbery committed on a Cummings Lodge resident early yesterday morning.
Ryan Vaux, called “Gaza”, 36, a former member of the Tactical Services Unit of the Guyana Police Force was shot while driving away from some armed police ranks outside the Sparendaam Police Station.

Ryan Vaux called “Gaza”[inset) car was pulled from a trench minutes after he collapsed from the gunshot wound.

Ryan Vaux called “Gaza”(inset) car was pulled from a trench minutes after he collapsed from the gunshot wound.

Vaux who resided at 80 Norton Street, Lodge, eventually collapsed from the gunshot wound and crashed his Toyota Spacio into a trench about 800 metres east of the police station.
The police in a statement said that about 01:10 hour yesterday, ranks of a mobile police patrol along Broad Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara, saw a man running behind a motor vehicle bearing registration PSS 6835 and shouting that he had been robbed of a sum of money by persons in the vehicle.
The police said that the ranks subsequently intercepted the motor vehicle with the driver and another man inside. In the passenger’s possession was $21,000.
According to the police the passenger along with the robbery victim who was identified as Deryck Persaud, 46, of Cummings Lodge, were placed into the police vehicle, while a police rank entered Vaux’s vehicle and they were taken to the Sparendaam Police Station.
There Deryck Persaud informed the police that he had been robbed by the two men who were armed with a handgun and a knife.
He told police that he was walking along the road when the car pulled up alongside him and the passenger got out and confronted him with a “Rambo” knife.
Persaud said that the man demanded his money and he initially resisted. He claimed that the driver of the car who apparently got angry by his reluctance to hand over his money, got out and pointed a gun at him, forcing him to hand over $25,000.
Persaud said that shortly after, he saw a police mobile patrol and he informed the ranks that he was just robbed by two men in the car that was speeding away in front of him.
The police gave chase and caught up with the vehicle and took the men to the station.
According to a source, at the station, the police decided to carry out a search of the car that was parked on the roadway.
Two armed ranks stood guard while a detective effected the search in Vaux’s presence.
The police said that as this was being done, Vaux suddenly bent down into the driver’s side of the car and pulled out a gun which he pointed at one of the armed ranks.
This newspaper was told that the ranks warned Vaux and ordered him to drop the weapon but he refused and drove away instead.
The ranks then discharged a round from their rifle at Vaux but he managed to drive out of their sight.
The police later drove in the direction in which Vaux had driven and found the car in the trench that separates Vryheid’s Lust and Better Hope.
It turned out that the weapon Vaux had brandished was a pellet handgun. It was found in the crashed car.
The other suspect is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, relatives of the dead man who turned up to identify his body are not too convinced by the police version of the incident.
They say that the police explanation leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
“Why would he point a pellet gun at the police who had rifles in their hands?” questioned one female relative.
Vaux’s wife who was also at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary declined to speak to this newspaper.
However she told investigators that her husband left home around 21:00 hours on Sunday to ply his trade which is usually done from outside the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
She said that she was only informed about his death when a reporter contacted her shortly before midday yesterday.

Lured, beaten and forced to have sex with foster parent

MAY 12, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

…woman tells her story of abuse

By Jeanna Pearson
A young woman was lured, beaten and forced to have sex with her former foster parent while his wife looked on. Someone allegedly videoed the entire episode of abuse.
This woman is ashamed to be photographed because, she says, she feels less of a person after the video of the act was posted on the internet.
“He called me and told me to come to the guest house. When I reached there and opened the door him, his wife and another person was sitting on the bed waiting for me,” the 20-year-old said.
“Then his wife grab me and ripped my clothes and tell me that I wanted her husband so she will give me a licking. Then she tell me to perform oral sex on him while they watch.”
The young woman, who was 19 years old at the time of the abuse, said she quickly obeyed because it was three of them against her and she was afraid that they would kill her.
She said that she went to live with the couple after her parents died and her family “split up” when she was 14 years old.
She would clean the house and complete her chores on time, she said. But afterward when she would retire to her room, she recalled, the man would come and try to touch her. Complaining did her no justice, she stated, remembering that every time she told her foster mom, the woman would chide her for lying.
“She never believed me. She believed everything he told her,” she said.
She said that right after the recent assault she called a friend and they went to the Brickdam Police Station, where a statement was taken and a medical certificate was provided. Yet, eight months later, the police have failed to bring her justice. She is continuously being harassed with death threats.
She said the police had informed her that the file would be taken to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice on the matter. She said that she was being bombarded by the couple that if she pushed the issue there will be fatal consequences.
She said that the police might not have done anything if the video was not uploaded on the internet. ‘A’ Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken, stated that the police were aware of the matter and are investigating.
However, now she is forced to not only battle the trauma of the assault but also that the video has gone viral.
She has been receiving counseling since the traumatic incident. She has contemplated suicide and she had suffered bouts of depression after the video went viral. “When I saw the video I felt really bad. I wanted to kill myself but I didn’t do it because I was receiving counseling. They wanted to ruin me. I didn’t have any relationship with that man,” she said, nervously rubbing her hands against the side of the chair.
She said the man had started “touching” and “rubbing her foot” when she was 16 years old. “The police are saying they don’t have enough evidence and it is disappointing. I felt disappointed with the police because they did nothing to help me get justice.”
Psychologist Dr. Dawn Stewart, who has been counseling the young lady, stated that she suffered significant emotional trauma after the assault and it escalated further when the video was posted on the internet.
“This mother who has a one-year-old child wanted to kill herself and her child. She thought no one was listening to her, no one trusted her, no one believed her and she still has trouble sleeping at nights. She wakes up in the middle of the night, remembering the gruesome assault.
“She said the video became her only evidence yet nothing moving on the law enforcement side. She said the persons were brought in for questioning by the police but was later released on bail.
“Why aren’t these persons prosecuted for their action? She hasn’t been given justice. Women need protection from the State!” Stewart said.
“The police need to investigate and bring charges against these people. The justice system is too slow…I believe that they don’t care and they take women for granted and this is a perfect example. When her first complaint was lodged it was completely ignored,” she indicated.
Stewart added that even if a woman “puts herself in a place where she can be raped or sexually assaulted, it is still unlawful for the perpetrator to commit the act.
“Because someone was raped or sexually assaulted that doesn’t mean that they dressed a way to attract that sort of attention or they acted a way that they should be raped. Rape is rape regardless of whatever the situation they find themselves in. Women’s lives matter. We need to be assertive and aggressive about taking care of our women,” she said.
She stated that Public Security Ministry should start adopting a “swift justice” method in handling cases of violence against women.
“This young lady needs to start her life over but she cannot do that if these people are not brought before the legal system.”
According to the United States Department of State 2015 report on this country’s human rights, local NGOs in Guyana observed that in most cases domestic violence reports were not taken confidentially but rather were discussed in the open at police stations. They were not treated as a matter of urgency.
For last year, law enforcement received 233 reports of rape and only 36 persons were charged. There was a large court backlog. A Judge has discretion to issue a sentence of any length in a rape conviction, depending upon the circumstances and severity of the act committed.
The police received 2,170 reports of domestic violence cases, and 1,131 persons were charged, resulting in a lack of confidence in the judicial system.
The report indicated that there are reports of police accepting bribes from perpetrators and other reports of Magistrates applying inadequate sentences after conviction.
Child Counselor Abigail Loncke told Kaieteur News, that she was left sickened by the content of the video. “I cannot imagine the emotional and psychological trauma that young lady must be going through,” she said, highlighting the woman not only has to deal with the trauma of the assault but also that the video was viral.
“It is painful enough to be abused but then to have the whole country know about that abuse…that you were beaten and then forced to perform sex on someone while others watched on that’s not only sadistic, but a life scar. These people were once entrusted to protect her – that too is traumatic. The mother figure forcing a girl to have sex with the father figure— that is unacceptable,” she said.
The United Nations Organization had reported that as many as seven in ten women in various parts of the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point of their lives, most times at the hands of persons close to them.
The Heads of the organization have since called on Governments to honour their obligation to end violence against women and girls as outlined in the Convention of the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women.
Rape victims and victims of sexual assault face bouts of low self-esteem, high risk behavior, while some of them exhibit suicidal behaviour.

The body of 75-year-old Pairadeau Mars, called ‘Perry’, was found at around 19.00 hrs yesterday in his study, after his wife arrived at the couple’s Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar home.
Kaieteur News understands that his hands were bound with duct-tape, and duct-tape was also wrapped around his mouth and neck. Police reportedly found a hammer and cutlass nearby.
The victim’s home was ransacked, and there was evidence that the killers had feasted in the home, since bottles and wrappers were strewn on the floor. There was also evidence that the killers lit the stove.
From information police have received, the killers are individuals who were known to Mr. Mars, a remigrant and Professor, who had lectured in ethnic studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
One key player in the callous killing is believed to be a young woman, who had lived a few houses away from the victim. Sources said that she was still regularly seen in the area, and would reportedly visit Mr. Mars’ home and beg for money.
Residents reportedly saw the suspects arrive in a car, and later saw them leaving the home with suitcases.
According to reports, the victim’s wife, Joan Mars, had travelled to Linden yesterday, and last communicated with her husband at around 14:00 hrs. She reportedly called at around 16:00 hrs and got no response.
She reportedly arrived at around 19.00 hrs and immediately realised that something was amiss, since the front door was ajar. Upon entering, she saw her husband’s bound body on the study floor.
Because the body was still warm, the woman reportedly believed that Mr. Mars was still alive, and, with assistance from neighbours, rushed him to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The body was later taken to the Lyken Funeral Home.

“Casual” argument between brothers-in-law ends in death

MAY 13, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Residents of Haslington were left in shock last evening after a “causal” argument between two brothers-in-law ended in deadly fashion.
Fifty-two year-old Terrance Adams was killed around 20:00hrs outside a shop he operated. Adams’ alleged assailant, Les Hamilton, was said to have been under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
The dead man’s brother, Leyland Nelson, told Kaieteur News that Adams and Hamilton got into an argument just around 14:00hrs yesterday. He said that the dispute had simmered, but manifested itself again last night.
According to Nelson, when Hamilton began quarreling again, Adams brushed him off “because he knew he (Hamilton) was drunk.” Nelson said that his brother told Hamilton that he would deal with the issue “another time, when he (Hamilton) sober up” and so the argument died down again.
Nelson indicated that Hamilton then left the shop, “and I left a little after to go and buy tennis roll and cheese for us to eat”. He said that he was riding his bicycle returning to the shop when he saw a large crowd. Nelson said that he inquired and was told “Les jus’ jook up yuh brother.”
Nelson said that he rode further along the street and saw his brother lying on the road in a pool of blood.
Hamilton, who made no attempt to leave the murder scene, was apprehended on the spot, while the victim was rushed to Georgetown Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
