The concrete wall the bandits ripped through to enter into the victim’s home

Four armed bandits early yesterday ripped through a concrete wall to gain entry into heavily grilled two-storey building at Lot 129 Lindley Avenue, Republic Park, and robbed three Malaysian miners of their phones and more than $2M in local and foreign currency.

The robbery occurred just about 04:00 hrs. It is suspected that the gunmen broke the wall at the back of the property some time around 03:00 hrs during the heavy shower.

It is suspected that the masked men spent hours in the yard, patiently waiting on the heavy rain to break through the concrete.

They then entered the house through the hole they made. “Like every time the rain fall hard, they break the wall and when it stopped, they stop because neighbours and the victims would have heard so these men had to spend more than an hour in the yard,” a police source said.

Kaieteur News was informed that once inside the house, the suspects knocked on each victim’s bedroom door and when they opened, they were held at gunpoint for more than an hour as the masked men ransacked the house.

Peter Ten, in an interview explained that he and his colleagues secured their home and retired to bed. About 04:00 hrs, he heard someone knocking on his bedroom door and opened—he never thought it would have been robbers in his home.

“I open the door and the men rushed in and started harassing me for money. They put us to sit and they (ransacked) the house for more than an hour,” the Malaysian miner said. He added that the bandits were mainly questioning him since his colleagues cannot speak English.

He added, “I don’t know how we didn’t hear anything. We didn’t even hear the dog bark,” Ten said while adding that yesterday’s robbery was the second time he had been attacked by robbers since he is in Guyana for the past three years.

Last August, two gunmen trailed Ten from a city bank to a café on Church Street, Georgetown and robbed him of $1M in cash. No one was held for that robbery.

— 39 cases in all; said they were for police’s Old Year’s Night party

LESS than three months after being given the responsibility to head the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police Motie Dookie could find himself being asked to ‘walk’ from the Guyana Police Force after he was on Saturday busted with 30 cases of smuggled Johnny Walker Whiskey.

Up to last evening, he was being held at the Whim Police Station where ranks were preparing to hand him over to Customs enforcement officers.
The bust took place at a road block which was set up along the Corentyne Coast in the vicinity of the Whim Police Station and which was headed by a police Lance Corporal whose name was given as “William”.

The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the officer was driving motor van GPP 7399 when he encountered the roadblock.
Dookie reportedly told his juniors that the alcohol was “for police to drink at the old Year’s Night Ball” which is slated for this evening at Eve Leary.
Knowing the prevalence of smuggled items being ferried along the Corentyne coast, the ranks asked their superior to produce documentation for the items which he had in his vehicle, but he failed to do so.

A check also confirmed that the alcohol was not the property of the Guyana Police Force. The senior officer was invited into the station where he was promptly detained and senior officers informed of the development.
Dookie was assigned the top job at the SWAT unit in October of this year after the then head of the unit was robbed of a force- issued weapon and several other items during a carjacking. He and a female companion were “breezing out” on the Georgetown seawall at the time.

Shortly after Dookie was given the opportunity to head the unit, the SWAT unit in an operation which hinged on intelligence- gathering, successfully apprehended prison escapee Royden Williams in West Coast Berbice.

A few years ago, Dookie, who was then a cadet officer, was stripped of his rank after he stopped an associate of a senior government functionary. He was however reinstated to his original rank after challenging in the High Court, the decision to demote him. The court had found that his demotion was unlawful.

…10 arrested, large amount of foreign currency seized

THE Joint Services have seized a large shipment of cocaine and arrested close to a dozen persons including foreigners during a major drug bust in the Waini River, top sources in the security have confirmed to this newspaper.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that the operation was launched during the weekend and intensified on Monday. So far reports suggest that thousands of dollars in foreign currency was seized and 10 persons were arrested among them Guyanese, Venezuelans and persons of other nationalities.

The M.V. Tamakay, a floating police station, is now permanently stationed at the mouth of the Waini River. It was in the Waini River some years ago when a suspected cocaine semi-submersible vessel was uncovered. This latest bust comes on the heels of disclosures that through their combined efforts the law enforcement agencies seized over $11B worth of cocaine for last year. Since coming into office the APNU+AFC government has strengthened inter-agency collaboration and has made significant gains in combatting narcotics.

Government also established the National Anti-Narcotics Agency (NANA), headed by Major General (ret’d) Michael Atherly who also heads the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

In its 2017 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, the United States said the Government of Guyana cooperates closely with it but is limited by resource constraints and high levels of corruption in the country. The current administration elected in May 2015 has expressed a strong willingness to cooperate with the United States on drug control, extradition, and mutual legal assistance, and other international crime issues.

The report also states that the United States would welcome increased levels of cooperation with the Government of Guyana, to advance mutual interests against the threat of international drug trafficking. Guyana has shown strong interest in furthering collaboration under CBSI.

The United States looks forward to tangible progress on investigations, prosecutions, extraditions, security sector capacity enhancement, the engagement of at-risk communities, and enforcement of laws against money laundering and financial crimes.

What a wonderful record of the pnc.

A woman was murdered every month in 2017

A 73-year-old woman is set alight by her own son. A teenage girl is battered to death with a rock in a cemetery.
A farmer’s wife is strangled and buried near a row of freshly-planted crops.
A drug-addicted intruder buried an 18-month-old girl alive after ripping out her earrings and throwing her through a window.
They were among several females that were slain by boyfriends, husbands, relatives and acquaintances, during practically every month of last year.
Some of the killers were captured, a few chose to take their own lives, and, in one case, the killer(s) are still unknown.
In late March, police dug up the decomposed body of 39-year-old Lilwantie Balack, from the backyard of the Lot 117 Mibicuri North, Black Bush Polder home where she had lived with her husband.
Police believe that Balack was strangled on September 6, 2016. Her husband, Sunil Datt Balack, had allegedly given the couple’s three children conflicting reports about her whereabouts, including claiming she had run off with a man to the United States.
The woman’s horrible fate only came to light on Wednesday after her daughters, who had become increasingly suspicious, contacted the police.
Police eventually charged her husband, allegedly after obtaining a confession.
The gruesome killings continued in June, with a jealous reputed husband chopping and battering his spouse to death at their Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice home.
Mintie Karamchand, 40, sustained slashed wrists and ankles and was clobbered with a piece of wood on her head until she inhaled her last breath.
Her reputed husband, Goldburn Oswald December, fled the scene, but on July 18, police found his decomposed body hanging from a tree near the Canje River.
December and Karamchand had lived together for 24 years and separated some eight years ago.
December, who was unemployed, migrated to neighbouring Suriname leaving the woman to provide and take care of their five children. He was reportedly deported back to Guyana just over a month prior to the killing, and was staying at the Sheet Anchor residence with Karamchand.

Goldburn Oswald December

Murdered: Indrawattie Totaram

However according to their daughter, Drucilla, they were not romantically involved since her mother had moved on. This sparked jealousy, and arguments were frequent within the home.
On July 29, Ryan Singh, 25, allegedly slit the throat of his 17-year-old common-law wife, Rosanna Lakhpal, at her Number Two Village, East Canje home.
The suspect was allegedly evicted from the home two days prior to the killing. The couple was said to be involved in frequent fights and arguments over the 25-year-old’s drug habit and unemployment.
Ryan Singh was eventually captured and charged.
On October 3, residents in the vicinity of Albert Street and South Road, Bourda, awoke to the shocking news that two elderly, church-going women had been murdered in their home.
Constance Fraser, 89, and 77-year-old Phyllis Caesar, were bound, gagged and slain in their Lot 243 Albert Street and South Road residence.
The women were members of the South Road Full Gospel Assembly, located a few doors from their home.
The home was also ransacked.
Mrs. Caesar acted as caretaker for the church, and had the code for the church alarm. She also kept the keys for a nearby school in Regent Street.
On October 11, Imran Khan, called Christopher Khan, 25, of Independence Boulevard, Albouystown; Steven Andrews, 26, of 86 Hunter Street, Albouystown and Phillip Suffrien, 23 of 66 Hunter Street, Albouystown, were charged and remanded for the double murder.

On August 11, depressed over his failing business, 47-year-old Rudolph Blair called ‘Rudy’, stabbed his wife Rhonda Blair to death, before shooting and killing himself at Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice.
Rhonda Blair’s body, with multiple stab wounds, was found lying in a pool of blood in her yard.
Rudolph Blair fled to the back of a neighbour’s yard. He refused to surrender, despite pleas from relatives and police ranks. He was later found dead with gunshot wounds to the chest and lower left ear.
Police retrieved his licenced .32 Taurus revolver near the corpse.
The couple had owned a string of Stretch ‘D’ Dollar stores, and had originally lived together at Cumberland. But after the husband became abusive, his wife left their matrimonial home and sought refuge at a friend Jonelle Dover’s house, in Ithaca Village, West Coast Berbice.
There were reports that Mr. Blair had always been threatening to kill himself.
He reportedly confided in the source that he was desirous of selling his Pitt Street business to pay off his outstanding loans that were burdensome to his family. However his wife was not in support of this, she wanted him to keep the business going, even with them being buried in debt. They were reportedly going bankrupt.
He had reportedly told the source, with his licensed revolver in hand, that, “I get a mind fuh kick Rhonda from the step to the gate and kill mehself”.

Police Sergeant Kenish Sheriff-Fraser

September1, 2017 began with an even more heinous case.
A drug addicted man sneaked into a relative’s house at Lot 98 North Sophia, Georgetown. He then snatched an 18-month-old girl from her bedroom, flung her out of a window, then buried alive to hide his tracks.
Before killing the child, the suspect, 20-year-old Sherwyn Roberts, who was recently released from prison, allegedly ripped a pair of gold earrings from the victim’s ears. He was arrested at his ‘B’ Field Sophia home shortly after, and has since been charged.
On October 5, 2017, intoxicated and out of work pork-knocker Clayton Anthony, also called “Woody,” butchered his lover, Police Sergeant 19467 Kenisha Sheriff-Fraser, in her Number 30 Village, West Coast Berbice home.
He then hanged himself.
The body of 39-year-old Sheriff-Fraser, with her chest and stomach sliced open, and chop wounds to the forehead, left temple and limbs, was found on her bedroom floor in her West Coast Berbice home.
A bloodstained cutlass was found near the body.
Her 42-year-old lover, Clayton Anthony, who lived in the bottom flat, was later found hanging from a tree in the Village.

THE KEISHA BRANCHE MURDER
On November 5, in a case somehow reminiscent of the 1993 Monica Reece slaying, Kescia Branche, a 22-year-old teacher, was found battered an unconscious on the roadside at Louisa Row.
She died a few days later. With then Crime Chief Paul Williams pleading for patience and vowing that the case would be solved, detectives detained several suspects, including three police ranks who were with Branche some hours before she was found injured.

Dead: Marissa Fraser

Ranella Benfield

In early December, they eventually arrested and charged 47-year-old taxi driver Mathew Munroe, after he returned from overseas. Investigators have also impounded his car.

BLOODY DECEMBER
The quiet Sunday of December 3, 2017, afternoon ended on a gruesome note 36-year-old GuySuCo labourer, Krishna Latchman, stabbed his reputed wife, Indrawattie Totaram, 40, to death before hanging himself in the couple’s one bedroom home at Lot 26 Third Street, Williamsburgh, Corentyne, Berbice.
Totaram was found at around 18:00 hrs with multiple stab wounds on a blood soaked mattress, while Latchman, clad in his underwear, was found hanging from a rope tied to a beam.
Totaram, the victim, had allegedly left Latchman and eloped with a young man, but returned home some two days ago. It is believed that this may have set the tone for the grisly crime.
After his spouse had eloped, Latchman had reportedly told a relative: “You na worry, nah tek stress, I gon deal with she, I gon bore she up”.
And after Totaram returned home, she confided in another relative that she believed Latchman was planning to kill her.
But no one apparently took her spouse’s threats seriously, since he was portrayed as a ‘quiet man’ by many residents and neighbours. Relatives said that he was a heavy drinker and would leave their home when he imbibed.,
The following day, the body of a 22-year-old part-time waitress Marissa Fraser was found in a trench at No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The victim, of Lot 24 No. 4 Village, Public Road, West Coast Berbice, had been stabbed about her face and body.
Fraser was last seen imbibing with a group of “village boys” after she left her No. 4 Village residence.
The next day, police detained Odit Thom, a 38-year-old security guard for the barbaric killing.
Thom, who has been charged, allegedly told police that he saw the waitress walking alone along the No.5 Public Road when he approached her and made sexual advances. It was her rejecting his advances that ‘ticked him off’ he told ranks.
A scuffle between him and Fraser ensued and he pulled out the scissors he had on his person and stabbed her 11 times about her body. He then dumped her body in the trench located in a street, near to a burial ground.
A post mortem examination conducted on Fraser’s body revealed that she died as a result of asphyxia and drowning compounded by multiple incise wounds.
Magistrate Rhondel Weaver ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the accused.
On December 12, the body of 18-year-old receptionist Ranella Benfield was found in a cemetery at Triumph, East Coast Demerara. Someone had bashed in her face with a rock.
The gruesome discovery was made around 07:00 hrs, just two days after she was reported missing.
Her murder remains unsolved.
On Christmas Day, the son of 73-year-old Mengree Dahri called ‘Gladys’, allegedly set her alight as she slept in her Lot 143 Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara residence.
The old woman died three days later and her 43-year-old son, Dewan Dahri, has since been remanded.

However, after the sex acts with the sex workers, Semple tied their hands and feet, placed them in his car and took them back at the location where he met them without paying for their service.
A few months ago, Semple had a matter of escaping lawful custody dismissed against him by Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on August 31 last, while being in lawful custody at the Agricola Police Outpost, pending investigation of an alleged rape and robbery, he escaped lawful custody.
The Magistrate told the court that the prosecution was unable to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt citing that insufficient evidence was led by the prosecution team.
He added that the accused was charged under the wrong section of the law.
According to information on the day in question about 23:40 hrs, the defendant was arrested and taken into police custody on an allegation of rape and robbery.
It was reported that about 02:30hrs the following day, the prisoner managed to unlock his handcuff and ran out the station after pushing a female police constable down who attempted to stop him.

US warns its citizens about Guyana’s crime rate – Says local police lack resources to respond to serious crime

The US Department of State has issued a warning to its citizens, who might be travelling to Guyana. It asked that visitors exercise increased caution due to the country’s crime rate.
It is unclear if the recent spate of armed robberies throughout the country is what pushed the US Department of States to issue the warning on its site, Travel.State.Gov on January 10, last. The site is where US citizens go to get information about a country before travelling.
There are four advisory levels: Level one—exercise normal precautions; Level two—exercise increased caution; Level three—reconsider travel and Level four— do not travel.
Guyana is listed under level two with a message, “violent crime, such as armed robbery and murder, is common (in Guyana). Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents.”
Guyana is at the same level with Jamaica. That country recorded 38 murders, 16 shooting and 17 robberies for the first six days in the year.
The US Department of State urged its citizens, who are travelling to Guyana, to be extra vigilant when visiting banks and ATMs; avoid walking or driving at night; do not show signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewellery and not to physically resist any robbery attempt.
Since the year started, there has been an increased in armed robberies with three to four reported cases daily. Only on Thursday, there were two reported cases of armed robberies, one involving a 34-year-old woman who was robbed at gunpoint by two bandits on a motorcycle.
Andrea Prerbersy was attacked by the men around 15:15 hrs in Alberttown, Georgetown, and robbed of her handbag, gold band and almost $5 million.
According to information received, the victim went to Light and Sixth Streets, Alberttown when two men rode up to her. The pillion rider dismounted the motorcycle and pointed the gun at the woman, demanding that she throw her bag.
The suspect picked up the bag and escaped.

According to reports, the men were apprehended at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown around 23:30h.
Details surrounding the arrest revealed that acting on information, lawmen swooped down on the La Penitence home of the rank.
The man was, however, not at home at the time and a 67-year-old relative of his was taken into custody after an unlicensed pistol with nine live rounds, five cellular phones and a motorcycle were discovered at the premises.

COPS UNDER PRESSURE…Twelve gun robberies in thirteen days, bike bandits behind nine attacks

– bike bandits account for nine attacks

With at least 12 recorded gunpoint robberies in 13 days, police have had their hands filled in keeping a lid on crime in the first 13 days of the year.
But from reports sent out to the media from the start of the year to yesterday, police appear to be fighting back, seizing some nine unlicensed firearms, and impounding at least three cars believed used in the commissioning of crimes, and detaining seal suspects.
From the statistics compiled by Kaieteur News, most of the robberies occurred in ‘A’ and ‘C’ Divisions. A relief for the lawmen is that there have been only two recorded murders so far.
But they have had to contend with a series of brazen robberies, of which at least nine were committed by gunmen on motorcycles.
On January 2, Kathryn Persico-Newton, 50, a teacher, had just left a commercial bank when two men on a motorcycle robbed her at gunpoint of some $1.2M in front of her Third Street, Alberttown home.
On January 6, Marcia Adams, 34, a cashier employed at Kamboat Restaurant, Herstelling, stepped out of a bus at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, where her husband was waiting, when a man on a white motor cycle rode up pointed gun and relieved her of a cell phone, bank card, and $35,000.
Three days later, gunmen on motorcycles struck twice in the space of three hours.
Debra Skeete, a 49-year-old dental surgeon, was held at gunpoint outside her Eccles, East Bank Demerara home. She had just left the Republic Bank branch, located on the public road at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
The gunmen, who were on a motorcycle, robbed her of 60 Pounds Sterling, $25,000 in local currency, which were in a shoulder bag containing an iPhone, a Samsung galaxy phone, Republic Bank and GBTI cards, and national identification and NIS cards.
Police said that Dr. Skeete went to the Republic Bank at around 10:45 hrs, she deposited $25,000 in the ATM, then drove to Bounty Supermarket, located on the public road at Grove, East Bank Demerara.
Dr. Skeete then drove to her home located on the East Bank. She had just parked when two men on a motorcycle rode up to her. One of the men then went to the driver’s side and ordered the dental surgeon to hand over her bag.
When she hesitated, the robber drew a handgun, opened the car door and snatched the bag. He then escaped on the motorcycle with his accomplice.
Then, at around 13:45 hrs, a gunman on a motorbike struck in similar fashion at Mittelholzer Street, Festival City, robbing Whitfield Wright, 74, of $527,000 in his yard.
Police said that Wright had withdrawn the cash from a Scotiabank branch. He then drove to his Festival City home, and had entered his yard when a man, who was riding a motorcycle, held him at gunpoint and relieved him of an envelope containing the money. The attacker then escaped.
On that same day, an accountant attached to the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), her taxi driver, and a supervisor attached to Prittipaul Singh Investment were victims of similar robberies.
Louren Thomas, 29, of Block 2 Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and taxi driver, Mark Horgobin of Duncan Street, Kitty, Georgetown were robbed of their phones and $20,000 cash around 20:30 hrs at Providence Housing Scheme by a lone gunman on a bike.
According to information received, the accountant left her work place in Horgobin’s taxi. While on Green Field Road, Providence, a male rode past the taxi and made a sudden stop in front of the car, forcing the driver to stop.
The biker then struck the taxi driver to the head with a gun then grabbed the victims’ valuables and escaped.
Also on January 9, sanitation workers Boodram Hemraj and Ramdin were at a worksite on Church Street, Georgetown when two armed men on a motorcycle without number plates, approached them.
The victims quickly handed over their grass-cutters when the pillion rider ordered his accomplice to shoot.
Meanwhile, that same day, 51-year-old Shafeek Azeez, a supervisor at Prittipaul Singh Investment was robbed of $40,000 at the entrance of his workplace, by two men on a CG motorcycle.
But police had some luck that day. Prompt response by ranks of the Sparendaam Police Station, resulted in the arrest of one of two motorcycle bandits who violently attacked and robbed a police rank of a gold chain valued at $ 220,000.
The policeman was conversing with a relative two men on a motorcycle rode up. The pillion gun-butted the policeman, snatched of his chain and rode off with his accomplice.
One of the suspects was arrested shortly after in Plaisance and positively identified.
Striking again on January, CG bandits with guns snatched almost $5 million in cash and other valuables from a woman they had trailed to Pere Street, Kitty.
The robbers also relieved their Perseverance, East Bank Demerara victim of a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone, a gold ankle band and documents, including her national ID and bank cards.
The gunmen had apparently followed their victim from the bank to her home, located at Light and Sixth Street, Alberttown.
Gunmen also used cars, suspected to have been stolen, in at least three robberies.
On January 6, two gunmen invaded the Hadfield Street Lodge home of customs broker Winston Gray, 61, and Veronica Griffith 61.

This bullet-riddled car was found at the back of Agricola after a robbery

Gray was awakened by one of the men, who slapped him.
The men made off with Gray’s licensed .32 pistol and 100 live rounds of ammunition; $50,000, $1M in jewellery and a cell phone.
They relieved Mrs. Griffith of a cell phone, $200,000 in jewellery and $65,000.
On January 9, Dominique Garraway, 21, was held at gunpoint at Crown and New Garden Streets. The bandit relieved Garraway of two gold bands, a pair of shades and $25,000 in cash. Police said the attacker escaped in a burgundy Toyota Allion which had the logo of a well-known taxi service.
On January 11, at around 10:25 hrs, bandits invaded the C&F Mall at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara. They held
a 22 year old cashier at gunpoint, forcing her to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash. They then fled.
The cashier raised an alarm and the owner of the business, who was in a nearby office and is a licensed holder of a firearm, pursued the robbers, who were fleeing in a waiting car, through Water Street, Bagotstown.
The businessman discharged several rounds at the getaway car.
Investigators later impounded bullet-riddled vehicle that they found abandoned in the Agricola Backdam.
COPS FIGHTING BACK
But police appear to be making some progress in apprehending some of the perpetrators. They have also seized several illegal firearms.
Yesterday, they announced the arrest of two motorcycle bandits, including a Joint Services rank. The policemen also impounded a motorcycle, and seized an unlicensed firearm and several cell phones.
On January 11, police in ‘C’ Division arrested a suspect who had allegedly recently robbed several persons at knifepoint of their cellular phones on the East Coast Seawall. All of the stolen items have been recovered.
The alleged robber had served several prison terms for armed robbery, including attacks on victims near the Kingston seawalls.
Last week, police also detained a 58 year-old medical practitioner and her 22 year-old son after reportedly finding an unlicensed.380 pistol in their car.
On January 10, police found a .32 pistol with three rounds and a sub-machine gun with six rounds, and nine live rounds, while searching a house at Durban Street, Lodge.
Three female occupants were detained.
Also , during an intelligence led operation by ranks of the Force’s Narcotics Branch at Latchmie Street, Better Hope, ECD, police detained a 32-year-old taxi driver and his 34-year-old reputed wife who is a member of the Guyana Defence Force after an unlicensed 9mm pistol with seven (7) matching rounds was allegedly found in their house. A matching 9mm spent shell was also found in the yard.
Again on January 10, police found two unlicensed firearms in the bonnet of a hire car that GRA operatives had impounded since December 29, 2017. The vehicle was seized at Line Path, Skeldon, Berbice.
Also on January 10, ranks on a mobile arrested a 23 year old, unemployed male and allegedly found an unlicensed Taurus pistol with four live rounds was found in a house at Self Help Square, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown in which the suspect was hiding.

Martin at the time was shot to the chest and abdomen during an argument with the ex-cop, who is a licensed firearm holder. It was reported that Martin was standing outside the hangout spot when an argument ensued between him and the ex-cop, after Martin placed some beer bottles on the man’s car and refused to remove them. It is alleged that after the argument, the ex-cop went into the bar but Martin followed and shot at the former cop, but missed. The man immediately drew his licensed handgun and discharged three rounds at Martin, hitting him in the chest and abdomen.

Beheading of Guyanese in Venezuela… National Toshaos Council appeals for Govt. investigation

The victim, moments before his beheading

The National Toshaos Council (NTC) yesterday appealed to the Government to investigate the recent torture and beheading of a young Indigenous Guyanese in Venezuela.

“The National Toshaos Council condemns, in the strongest terms, the murder of one of our indigenous sons as recorded in a gruesome video,” the organisation stated in a release.

“We extend our most sincere sympathy to the family and friends.”

While not releasing the name of the slain man, the statement indicated that the Council knew the victim’s identity.

“While the video was posted on social media, we had been following developments of someone missing in a mining district and never heard from, only to find a gruesome video of the young man on social media. We have attempted to contact the family and we ask that the public respect the privacy of the family at this time.

“The NTC is keen to highlight that there is no justification for such an act, and while the video claims that those are farmers who caught a thief, we were reliably informed that the young man was employed by his murderers and never paid. When he asked for his payment, his employers took to this process to address and deter others from seeking fair compensation for their work.

“We wish to highlight that the difficulties in our neighbouring Venezuela should not be taken lightly nor taken advantage of. While we continue to ask that our Leaders provide as much humanitarian support to those Venezuelans in need, we also ask that our hospitality is not taken advantage of, nor taken for granted,” the release added.

For those who think of retribution, we ask that you walk a higher ground and show respect for your brothers and sisters, regardless of nation. These are difficult times.

“Today, we call on the Government, through the offices of the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Social Protection, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs to conduct a thorough investigation into this brutal act and to take the necessary steps to protect all our citizens from exploitation and murder, and to enhance security at our borders to better protect the vulnerable Indigenous Peoples in border and mining communities.

“We also call on the Ministry of Education to re-examine education in Indigenous Communities and to develop clear policies that are aimed at bettering the education system in these communities that will see our peoples better catered for.

Lastly, we call on all parents, sisters, and brothers to be ever vigilant, and to love and work with our children to ensure they are better educated to avoid paths that would lead them to this end.”

The beheading reportedly occurred at least a week prior to the video being posted online. It is believed to have been carried out by members of the ruthless ‘Sindicato’ that imposes its own brand of justice in some mineral-rich areas in Venezuela.

The victim is said to be from Hosororo, located in Region One (Barima/Waini). His surname has been given as Romascindo.

The graphic video, posted online , begins with shots of the victim, who is gagged and bound, lying on the ground.

A man, with a huge knife then grabs the young miner and saws off his ears. One of the killers, holding a machete, then repeatedly hacks at the young miner’s head, as he writhes on the ground.

One report suggests that the ‘Sindicato’ members may have been incensed after the Guyanese miner demanded payment for his labour.

Police sources in ‘F’ Division said that they were not informed about the killing, which occurred in Venezuelan territory.

Members of the ‘‘Sindicato’ were also blamed for the execution-style killing of Guyanese Davinda Saywack in October 2017 in Venezuela, and  the July 2017 slaughter of Guyanese miners Vernon Eudoxie, 51, Cologne Solomon, 23, and Samuel Moses, 19,at Imataka Mining Backdam, Venezuela.

It is when she had crossed back and was standing in the corner, she said, that a speeding car, driven by a female swerved into her.
The woman said she does not recall the details of the car, or the woman driving.
She was rushed to the Best Hospital, West Bank Demerara, by her church members. Members of the Guyana Police Force subsequently turned up at the scene and took the driver into custody.

Armed bandits rob teacher, nurse

A headteacher and a nurse were recent victims of armed bandits operating in the desolate Tucber Park community in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Reports reaching this publication state that three men, each masked and carrying a handgun, attacked and robbed 51-year-old Moira Thomas, Head Teacher of the Zorg Primary School, as she was about to park her motor cycle in her yard at Tucber Park in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Thomas explained to this publication that she had left home at about 21:30h on Wednesday to purchase dinner. She returned shortly afterwards, and was in the process of mounting her motor cycle on its stand when she was held from behind and a cold piece of metal was placed against her neck.
“They tell me not to scream, but I loose the bike and it fall, and I start to scream out of fright; and then I see is three of them, and the two in front of me had what appeared to be guns in their hands, so I calm myself down,” Thomas detailed.
She said that by that time she had fallen to the ground, and began begging for her life while indicating that she would give the bandits whatever they wanted. But even before she had so said, the box of food was pulled from her hand. The men also took a pouch containing her driver’s licence and other documents for her motor cycle.
“They just collect everything and run out the yard, and I get up and start running to go inside; but I had to turn back to turn off the bike and take out the key, because the house key and the bike key (are) on the same bunch,” she said.
Thomas said she called the Police and informed them of what had transpired, even as she expressed fear that the bandits might return now that she was inside the house. She said she was told that a patrol was in the area.
The woman said she also called one of her daughters and several friends, and related the incident as she waited for the Police to arrive.

Police a no-show
At about 01:30h on Thursday, still in fright because she had not seen the Police, Thomas called a taxi, and when it arrived, she left her home and went to a relative’s home to sleep.
“When the taxi come I peep outside, and then I run out the house and in the taxi with speed,” she detailed.
She said that when she returned home at about 06:30h on Thursday, there were two officers in her yard. They said they were responding to a call. She said the officers told her that they were given the wrong direction.
“They say that I was hysterical and so the direction (I gave them) was wrong. They lie! I know I give them the right direction to my house every time I call. What about my daughter? What about my friends? They were hysterical?” she questioned.
Thomas has since filed a report of the Police action, or rather lack of action.
On the evening prior to Thomas’s attack, three men — also carrying guns — held a nurse at gunpoint as she was walking home in Tucber Park, New Amsterdam. The men escaped with the woman’s cash, jewelry and a cellular phone.
Significantly, that incident took place just outside of Thomas’s premises.
Police say they are investigating both incidents.

Cops probe slain girl’s link to ‘group’ in bizarre cemetery murder

Jan 22, 2018 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...rre-cemetery-murder/

– as victim’s dad vows to help find killers

What connection, if any, does an online group have with the still-unsolved murder of a teenage girl who was battered to death in a cemetery last December?
That’s the question that detectives are seeking answers to, as they pursue the killer or killers of 18-year-old Rainella Benfield, whose body was found in a cemetery at Triumph, East Coast Demerara on December 11, 2017.
Benfield, a receptionist who was employed with Qualfon, was apparently killed by someone who repeatedly struck her in the face with a rock. The bloodstained ‘weapon’ was left near the corpse.
The method in which she was slain has led to the conclusion that vengeance, for some possible grievance, was the motive.
“From the outset, when we look at the type of injuries sustained, and the postmortem, we realised that it (the killing) would have been meted out (because) of grievance, affair, passion, as it relates to something she may have known or heard,” Crime Chief Paul Williams told journalists at a recent press conference.
The Crime Chief also said that information had surfaced that has caused his detectives to be “looking at a group to see definitely if there is any information that we can use to pursue further investigations.”
The ‘group’ to which Williams referred reportedly comprises individuals, who first corresponded via ‘WhatsApp.
“From my understanding, the group started to meet, and then began to get bigger,” Rainella’s father, Rainsford Benfield, told Kaieteur News this week.
“For me, it seems that it moved from being a company to being a cult.”
But Mr. Benfield said that he knew nothing about the group to which his daughter belonged until after her death.
He speculates that his daughter was slain “because of something she found out, or something she may have done, or refused to do.”

Murdered: Rainella Benfield

The area where Rainella was found

According to Mr. Benfield, who saw his daughter’s body, said Rainella “practically did not have a face,” because of the ferocity of the attack.
Mr. Benfield says he’s determined that his daughter’s killers will be found.
“It will not b another unsolved case. I will go the full length (for justice) and I will not give up.”
SUSPECTS
Police have been reluctant to disclose many details about their investigations, or other theories pertaining to the case. Five individuals, including the slain girl’s fiancé, were initially detained.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators are attempting to locate a Beterveragting resident whom they consider to be “a person of interest,” in the investigation.
Rainella Benfield, of Lot 99 Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was reportedly last seen alive at around 18:00 hrs on Saturday, December 9.
A male friend of Rainella’s had said that that she had planned to spend the night out with a group of friends at Mahaicony. But the receptionist cancelled at the last moment, since she had to work late the following day.
On Monday, December 11, she was found dead in the Triumph cemetery.
It is suspected that she was slain the previous Saturday, since persons in the area reportedly heard someone screaming in the vicinity of the cemetery.

Bourda shooting death…Mom wants man seen in video kicking son to also be charged

Jan 22, 2018 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...-to-also-be-charged/

One week after a city rank was given a manslaughter charge for killing mentally ill Marlon Fredericks, the victim’s mother is seeking to have the man seen on video kicking her son to be charged as well.
Fredericks, of Tiger Bay, Georgetown was shot by a city constable on January 16 last as he attempted to escape from the lock ups of the Bourda City Constabulary.
But the day before he was shot, a video surfaced on social media which showed another man, believed to be a former law enforcement rank, kicking Fredericks as he lay on the ground.
The video sparked widespread outcry, with many viewers, including social activists, calling for him to be charged with assault.
Fredericks’ mother, Claudette Fredericks, has now joined calls for an investigation to be launched into the incident.
Mrs. Fredericks noted it is still unclear what her son did to deserve the beating he sustained.
“The video is clear, that the guy, (the assailant is seen violating another human. I mean, my son was already under duress by another rank. It did not call for all of that battery.”

The individual recorded on video kicking Fredericks

Dead: Marlon Fredericks

Charged: Gregory Bascom

The woman says she still does not understand clearly the circumstances of her son’s arrest
“At one time, I was told that he was detained over some incident he had with a woman but I am still to understand what exactly the issue was.”
The woman is therefore hoping that “the law of the land takes effect because there is evidence of an assault on video.”
“Let justice take its course.”
The rank seen in the video has since been identified as a former Tactical Services Unit (TSU) rank. He was interdicted last year for allegedly striking a woman in the face.
It was alleged that the woman went to the station to make a report. While there, she and the police rank became involved in an argument, which ended with the alleged assault.

The robbers also attacked Mr. Mohabir, who was outside of the shop, clubbing him on the head and stabbing him in the region of his navel.

One of the robbers entered the upstairs flat but then retreated without taking anything.

The injured Mrs. Mohabir managed to contact a relative by phone. A neighbour reportedly took the victims to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. They were subsequently transferred to the GPHC.

80 years for Bagotville wife killer

Jan 30, 2018 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...otville-wife-killer/

An unremorseful Miguel Barker was yesterday jailed for 80 years after being convicted of killing his wife Donessa Barker on April 30, 2015 at Inner Bagotville, West Bank Demerara. The custodial sentence was handed down by Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Georgetown.
Prosecutors Tiffini Lyken and Abigail Gibbs appeared for the State. Barker was represented by Attorney-at-Law Maxwell McKay in association with Sherise Dowding.

Jailed for 80 years: Miguel Barker called Allan

In a plea of mitigation, McKay told the court that his client is a very religious person and father of one. However, even after being found guilty, Barker, also known as Allan, maintained his innocence.
Barker eventually told the court, “I am sorry for whatever happened.”
Justice Singh started the sentence at a base of 60 years. The judge added on 10 years, stating that the killing was premeditated. He also added on another 10 years for its domestic violence nature.
Donessa Barker, 28, also called ‘Nabine’, collapsed on the front stairs of her friend’s Lot 21, Inner Bagotville home at around 16.00 hrs after sustaining at least six stab wounds to her neck, left side and other parts of her body. She died at the scene even as her friend, Shaneiza Clarke, tried to resuscitate her and get the mortally wounded woman to a hospital.
According to reports, Miguel Barker fled the scene after fatally stabbing his spouse.
He was nabbed about a week after while job hunting in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Shaneiza Clarke was the prosecution’s star witness. She testified that the couple was always in the habit of “cussing” and hitting each other. She pointed out that she heard Miguel Barker threaten to kill his wife on several occasions.
Testifying via Skype from Suriname, Clarke told the court that she once lived in the same house with Miguel Barker and his wife.
According to Clarke, on the day in question at around 15:30hrs, she was awakened by her step sister Jovanna Frank. She told the court that she woke up Donessa Barker who came over to her bedroom. The witness recounted that some time after she received a cell phone call and went to accompany her step sister and Barker on the front verandah.
She said that Donessa Barker had inquired from her step sister about what type of music she had in her phone. Clarke recounted that Barker told Frank that she was going to uplift her phone from her bedroom. She added, “Donessa left the landing (verandah) and walked towards her room. All I hear is Oh God! Shaneiza come now.”
Clarke recalled that she armed herself with a cutlass she retrieved from under her bedroom and walked towards Donessa Barker’s bedroom. According to the witness, she saw Miguel Barker stooping at the window in Donessa Barker’s room. She said that the man turned around and looked at her, before she saw Donessa Barker standing at the bedroom door with blood pouring down her face. She said that Miguel Barker jumped through the window and escaped.

Victim: Donessa Barker

“He (Miguel) was wearing a white jersey with a black security pants. I see she (Donessa) panting for breath. I see blood shooting out from her neck and her hands. I shake she and tell she stay with me, I going and get help.”
Clarke recounted that the previous night – April 29, 2015 – she and Donessa Barker had heard footsteps coming from the bushes after returning home from attending a wake, at around 23:00hrs. She added that the electricity in her home went out, causing her to peep through a hole in the wall from where she saw that lights were on in her neighbour’s home. She said that when she looked out the window she saw Miguel Barker standing about 10 feet from her home, smoking a cigarette.
She recalled telling persons to take Barker to the police station, but he eventually dropped a knife he was holding and began walking away. Clarke said that she subsequently took Donessa Barker to La Grange Police Station. She said that they also lodged a report about Miguel Barker’s abusive behaviour.

Bandits hold blind victims at gunpoint after invading Institute

– Take laptop, but return cash

The Guyana Society for the Blind

Four masked bandits invaded the Guyana Society for the Blind on Tuesday night and held six visually impaired persons along with the only sighted individual at gunpoint before stealing a laptop computer belonging to the non-governmental organization.
The incident happened around 22:00 hrs at Lot 44 High Street, Werk-en-rust. The bandits gun-butted a volunteer, Selwyn Jacobs, and placed their blind victims to lie on the floor as they demanded cash and other valuables.
After ransacking several offices and rooms at the Institute, they escaped with one laptop. While leaving the premises, the men returned the victims’ cash.
According to information received, two blind persons were removing clothes from a line outside of the building when the four men ambushed them and forced them to lie on the ground.
The bandits then made their way into the building through an open door and held up Jacobs who was sitting on a chair. The men reportedly threw him on the floor and gun-butted him while demanding the keys to the other sections of the building.
President of the Society, Ganesh Singh, said that he was not at the property when the incident occurred, but claimed that Jacobs had informed him that one of the bandits threatened to shoot him (Jacobs), but one of his accomplices told him not to.
Kaieteur News was told that the bandits then went and searched the other sections of the building and demanded that their blind victims lie on the floor. The persons who were at the Institute at the time were those attending the University of Guyana and needed a place to stay.
A couple of other visually impaired persons, who heard what was happening, reportedly locked themselves in a room. The bandits did not see them. After the men got their hands on the laptop, they left.
“They only took the laptops and there were other things there. These persons had smart phones and so, but they didn’t take them…and when they (bandits) realized that the victims only had a couple hundreds of dollars, they returned the money,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, he expressed his disappointment with the response he received from the Guyana Police Force. He indicated that after the robbery, he made several calls to the Brickdam Police Station but no cops showed up. He even called to follow-up with ranks but they still did not show up.
According to Singh, it was only when one of the persons at the Institute called a detective on his personal phone that persons showed up. A crime scene rank then went to the scene yesterday afternoon to take statements.
No one has been arrested as yet.

That can't be rape ,she had a verbal contract and they breached the contract. It's no longer a criminal case, it's civil.

Contractor trailed from bank, shot in the head

Feb 22, 2018 News, https://www.kaieteurnewsonline...nk-shot-in-the-head/

https://www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/images/2018/02/terry-singh.jpgTerry Singh

An electrical contractor was shot in the back of the head and robbed of $600,000 some ten minutes after leaving a Republic Bank branch at Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
Terry Singh, 38, was shot by a tattooed gunman around 13:00 hrs yesterday, just as he entered the compound of the R. Kissoon Contracting Service at Foulis, East Coast Demerara.
The robber and an accomplice escaped with the cash on a CG motorcycle, which had no number plates.
Singh has been admitted to hospital with a fractured skull. His condition is stable and he is to undergo surgery.
The contractor’s employer told Kaieteur News that he had given Singh an $800,000 cheque, which the contractor encashed at the Republic Bank at Foulis.
Singh then withdrew $600,000, which was reportedly to be used to renovate his home.
Singh who is in pain but is conscious, told Kaieteur News that he then headed back to his worksite on his motorcycle.
The contractor said that when he was in the vicinity of Lusignan, he observed a silver grey car, which he suspected was trailing him.
According to Singh, the driver appeared to accelerate whenever he (Singh) increased his speed.
However, the contractor said that the vehicle was nowhere in sight when he reached his workplace.
Singh said that just as he entered his workplace at Foulis, he heard an explosion behind him. He had no idea that he had been shot until he saw the blood trickling down his neck.
Singh said that on turning, he saw a tall, slim, fair-complexioned man with tattoos on his arms pointing a gun at one of the workers, who had picked up a chainsaw.
The gunman then snatched Singh’s moneybag and fled out of the compound. He escaped with an accomplice, who was waiting nearby on a CG motorcycle.
A resident took the wounded contractor to a private hospital, where doctors determined that the bullet had exited the top of Singh’s head.
Police recovered a spent shell from the scene but were yet to make any arrests up to late yesterday.
They are also hoping to recover CCTV footage of the robbery.
The attack on Singh occurred just 12 days after fisherman,  Eddie Brandon, was shot in the leg and robbed of $7.6M he had withdrawn from branch of the Republic Bank at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
The robbers escaped after attacking  Brandon near his home at Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
No one has been arrested for that robbery.
