Two cars hijacked in one day… Child thrown out of hijacked car

– Crime Chief advises drivers to use tracking devices

Acting Crime Chief,
Paul Williams Williams

Acting Crime Chief Paul Williams is advising drivers to make full use of tracking devices on their vehicles as carjacking across the country, especially in the city, seems to be spiraling out of control, with two cases reported on Sunday alone.
Williams made this comment during a recent interview with this newspaper. He explained that with such services, it will make it easier for the cops to locate stolen vehicles.
There is a local company that offers tracking services for vehicles which also assists in shutting down the engine if a car is stolen.
At around 22:20 hrs on Sunday, a gunman hijacked a blue Toyota Spacio vehicle at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) with a nine-year-old child sleeping in the back seat. Having recognised the presence of the child, the carjacker stopped about 100 feet from the scene and put her out before escaping.
According to information received, 43-year-old Samantha Williams of Lot 1053 Diamond had just reached home with her niece. She exited her vehicle, bearing registration number PVV 9496 to open her gate, when she noticed a male exiting a parked car.
Kaieteur News was informed that the individual walked towards her, pointing a gun, and entered the vehicle, driving off with her niece. His accomplice sped off in the vehicle they arrived in. Upon realizing the child was at the back, the suspect stopped the vehicle and allowed her to leave.
No one has been arrested as yet.
Also, around 17:50 hrs on Sunday, Taxi driver, Ramesh Persaud of Lot 4 Triumph, East Coast Demerara, had his Toyota Allion motorcar, bearing registration number HC 5024 stolen by two men, one of whom was armed with a gun, at Carmichael Street, North Cummingsburg.
The 53-year-old victim, who is attached to Kitty Cabs Taxi Service, was reportedly hired by a female who requested to be taken to Carmichael Street. On arriving there, the driver attempted to assist the passenger with her luggage when he was confronted by a male individual.
Kaieteur News was informed that he was ordered to step away from the vehicle after which the man and an accomplice entered his car and escaped via Middle Street. A report was made, but no one has been arrested.
Meanwhile, from January to July last, the Crime Chief said that 25 vehicles were hijacked, with Toyota Premio and Allion topping the list. He said that in most of these cases, the carjackers waited in close proximity to the victims’ homes and confronted them when they exited their car to open their gates.
He urged drivers to have someone looking out for them at home, so he or she will notice whether anyone is around the area, waiting to strike.

Lethem businessman remanded over illegal aircraft landing

Remanded to prison: Hutshan Ramsingh

Three months after two men were charged for the construction of an illegal airstrip in Lethem, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday remanded the prime suspect to prison after he was charged with the offence.

Hutshan Ramsingh called Seon Singh, a 44-year-old businessman of Tabatinga, Lethem, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, and was not required to plead to the indictable offence.

It is alleged that between August 10 and August 13 at Mandacoro Island Savannah, Santa Fe, Lethem, Ramsingh conspired with persons known and unknown to facilitate the illegal landing of an aircraft on an unauthorized port of entry.

The accused was represented by Attorney-at-law Jerome Khan in association with Attorney-at-law Priyanka Ashley Sookraj.

The lawyer in his application to secure bail for his client told the court that Ramsingh is innocent of the charge. He added that his client was taken into police custody last August and was released on station bail.

The lawyer went on to tell the court that after his client returned to Lethem, armed men entered the man’s premises and being fearful for his life, he fled the jurisdiction for his safety.

The court heard that the accused contacted his attorney and he was told to surrender himself to the police, which he did.

The lawyer further stated that he believes β€œsome high ranking police officials” are involved in the discovery of the illegal aircraft and airstrip, and they are not being investigated.

Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the accused, citing that he is a flight risk and if bail is granted it is likely that he would not return to court for the trial.

The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the accused was remanded to prison.  He was instructed to make his next court appearance on March 5 at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.

Nathan Hamilton, 21, of Lot 107 Beverley Hills Drive, Lethem, and Wazim King, 37, were charged last September after they appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.

It is alleged that the two individuals conspired with Ramsingh to build the illegal airstrip.

Both defendants are being represented by Jerome Khan. They were both released on $400,000 bail each and the trial is being conducted in the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, the illegal aircraft and airstrip were discovered by police about 10 miles from Santa Fe.

Kaieteur News understands that the airstrip was previously destroyed by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). Hamilton and King were allegedly hired and paid to rehabilitate it.  It is believed that the plane and the airstrip, were being used for illegal activities.

  • neighbour captured with booty

The supermarket which came under attack.

Five armed men on Saturday night invaded Akash Supermarket at Lot 57, Number 68 Village, and fired several shots sending customers and staff running for cover.

Persaud on Sunday told reporters that he was standing outside of the supermarket with another customer, who was actually an off duty police, when at approximately 20:30 hrs, the men barged into the business.

Kaieteur News was told that five perpetrators stormed the premises; one dealt a lash to the customer, unaware that he was a police officer, and ordered him and the owner to enter the supermarket.

The men then began to discharge rounds in the entire supermarket, before one took aim at the cashier.

Upon seeing this, the cashier ran for the upper flat and locked herself in one of the bedrooms, while three of the gunmen scaled the counter and followed her.

β€œThey didn’t come in as customers they all came in at once and Akash was standing outside when one of them went out back and pointed the gun at him and brought him in the shop. They pushed him down one time and then they grabbed his phone,” a relative recounted.

The cashier, a female relative and her baby were hiding in the upper flat when the men gained entry via the stairs.

β€œThey kept banging on the bedroom door where we were hiding, but like their time ran out,” a relative said. The men decided to ransack the home for valuables, but eventually abandoned their search and headed back downstairs.

One of the rooms that was ransacked during the robbery

A doctor, nurse and prison officer were blindfolded and robbed at gunpoint around 03:00 hrs yesterday inside their Lot 312 Lamaha Park, Georgetown home by three masked men, who threatened to kill them if they refused to hand over their valuables.

The bandits, two of whom were armed with guns, gained entry into the two-storey property by breaking a door in the bottom-flat of the house and held three women, a teenager and three younger children at gunpoint for one and a half hours.

The victims have been identified as Phenila Rogers, 46, a doctor; Olive Hamer, 50, a prison officer; Donelle Charles, 23, a nurse and 16-year-old Osben Scott, all of Lot 321 Lamaha Park. One of the gunmen punched the teen twice in the face.

The bandits made off with five phones, four tablets, one laptop and $28,000 in cash.

According to information received, at around 21:00 hrs on Sunday, Charles secured the house and she and her family retired to bed. At about 03:00 hrs yesterday, Charles reportedly heard a strange noise coming from the lower flat and got out of her bed to go and investigate. On her way to the lower flat, she reportedly saw the three gunmen making their way upstairs and ran back to her room.

Kaieteur News was informed that once inside her room, the nurse began screaming for help, but this did not scare the bandits away.

Late yesterday, the nurse’s mother, Olive Hamer recalled waking to her daughter’s screams. She said before she could have gotten out of her bedroom, she was confronted by a masked man who pointed a gun at her.

β€œHe bring me and my son outside and he send the other two (bandits) to kick down my sister’s (Rogers’) bedroom’s door, but before they could have kicked the door, she came out, because she heard my daughter screaming,” Hamer said.

The woman added that the gunmen demanded that they get the screaming nurse out of the room before someone gets shot. β€œOne of them took out the magazine and say he will shoot if they don’t get what they want.”

Once the nurse exited the room, the men then used clothes and blindfolded them, after which they began searching the house.

According to the prison officer, the men took her daughter into her room and demanded that she show them where she kept her cash and jewellery. Once they were satisfied with their loot, they left the same way they came.

Kaieteur News was informed that the men were in the yard for quite some time, trying to gain entry. They first used an old gate in the yard to climb to a window in the upper flat, but could not reach. They then broke a door to a vacant apartment in the bottom flat and broke another door that separates the apartment from the victims’ home.

Hamer said that the robbery is a major setback for her family and has left the children traumatized. Investigators visited the scene early yesterday and took fingerprints.

Non Pareil residents capture bandit who robbed MP’s daughter

The captured bandit

It appears that residents are slowly starting their fightback against criminal elements.

On Tuesday night, bandits attacked a young, single mom of four at First Street, Section B, Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara. Neighbours, alerted to screams, managed to capture one of them.

The robbed woman just happens to be daughter of Opposition Parliamentarian, Gillian Burton-Persaud.

According to the Member of Parliament, her daughter was on her way home from work.

β€œThey cuffed and kicked her before taking her handbag, cellphone and jewellery. Her screams for help attracted neighbours and family members who responded quickly and were able to catch him while the other escaped with the bag and other items,” she said in a Facebook post.

β€œThanks to those who assisted, for the young mother is my daughter. Please share this post so others can be on the lookout for the others. It’s a gang that roves the area especially by the small bridge on Coldingen main road.”

The police, in the meantime, commended β€œthe brave and courageous action of several public spirited citizens who responded to a call for help by a female resident of Section β€˜B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara”. In vicious attack, carjacker tosses sleeping child out car

– after holding aunt at gate

In a frightening and sickening attack, a carjacker tossed a sleeping child from the blue Spacio motor car he hijacked on Sunday night at gunpoint from her aunt.
Reports are Samantha Williams, 43, of Lot 1053 Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was returning home about 22:20h with her niece asleep in the back of her motor car when she was pounced upon by the criminal as she was about to open her gate.
Guyana Times was told that Williams, who was driving motor car PVV 9496, had stepped out of the vehicle to open her gate when the man walked up and pointed a gun at her.
Williams started to scream, but the lone man nonetheless entered her car and drove away with her niece still asleep inside.
The perpetrator then stopped about 100 feet away and tossed the sleeping child out of the vehicle before making good his escape. The child suffered minor injuries.
The matter was reported, and the Police have launched an investigation.
According to Ploice last week, there have been 25 carjackings in seven months.
Just last Saturday, a taxi driver was shot by carjackers after he was lured by two women to D’urban Backlands to pick up a man who committed the crimes. Two days later, a former Journalist, according to another section of the media, was relived of her vehicle outside a nightspot.

Police were up to late Saturday night still searching for thesilver grey Premio bearing licence number HC 6296

In light of the increased incidence of carjackings, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has announced that it is embarking on an inter-agency approach to crack down on the crime, which has seen a spike in the past several months.

Over the past several months, bandits have been pouncing on motorists, especially those operating Toyota Allion and Toyota Premio motor cars, and often times, the motor vehicles are swiftly transported to various locations to be either stripped or overhauled. It was suggested that with the recent Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) restrictions on older models of vehicles, it is likely the bandits are stealing the cars for parts, the reason that many of the cars could never be recovered.
It was further related that certain auto-body repair shops are under the watchful eyes of investigators as some of these businesses are believed to be facilitating the criminal enterprise, with some even β€œcutting the cars”.
Police are, however, intensifying their campaign to stop the criminal activity. Acting Crime Chief Paul Williams, during the press conference, said that from the evidence obtained, carjacking gangs roam around looking for opportunities to pounce on unsuspecting drivers.
Guyana Times understands that Police have approached certain mechanic shops with the hope of finding the hijacked vehicles, but have come across stumbling blocks. It is on this note, the multi-agency approach was conceptualised and more so, investigators will be armed with the tools and information on specifications to recover stolen cars.
