ibn-e-mariyam huaa kare koii
Somebody please become the son of Virgin Mary
mere dukh kii davaa kare koii
Give me relief from my pain, someone
Ghalib, with his mischievous style, is calling upon a Jesus-like person to help him in his misery. Jesus could bring the dead back to life, but how could he cure someone of love-sickness, for which death may indeed be the cure?
shuraa-o-aa_iin par madaar sahii
it is true that we live by the rule of law
aise qaatil kaa kyaa kare koii
but how can you punish one who kills without killing?
chaal jaise ka.Dii kamaa.N kaa tiir
her walk, which pierces my heart like a sharp arrow
dil me.n aise ke jaa kare koii
how can you make yourself a place in the heart of someone like that?
baat par vaa.N zubaan kaTatii hai
if you speak in front of her, your tongue is cut off
vo kahe.n aur sunaa kare koii
she speaks, and all you can do is listen
bak rahaa huu.N junuu.N me.n kyaa kyaa kuchh
I am prattling in my ecstasy,
kuchh na samajhe Khudaa kare koii
God willing, no one has caught on about my secret love
na suno gar buraa kahe koii
do not listen if someone speaks evil, and
na kaho gar buraa kare koii
say nothing is someone does evil
rok lo gar Galat chale koii
stop someone if he treads the wrong path, and
baKhsh do gar Khata kare koii
forgive him if he makes a mistake
kaun hai jo nahii.n hai haajatama.nd
there is no one without their own needs,
kisakii haajat ravaa kare koii
whose needs would someone satisfy?
(it is not possible to please everyone, and it is difficult to choose)
kyaa kiyaa Khizr ne sika.ndar se
Look what Khizr did for Sikander,
ab kise rahanumaa kare koii
how can anyone give advice to others now?
[Khizr was the man who showed Alexander the Great the fountain of youth. When Alexander went to it, he found many old people lying about near the fountain, and he returned without taking a drink.]
jab tavaqqo hii uTh gayii "Ghalib"
when there is no expectation of an answer,
kyo.n kisii kaa gilaa kare koii
why would anyone bother to complain?
