23) BAAT NIKLEGI TO PHIR DOOR TALAK JAYEEGI: MP 3
Baat nikalegi to phir door talak jayeegi,
If the word gets out, it will get to far off places,
Log be-vajah udaasi ka sabab poochayengay,
People will ask the reason for your sadness,
Yeh bhi poochayengay ki tum itni pareshaan kyon ho,
They will also ask why are you so perturbed,
Ungaliyan uthayengi sukhay huey baalon ki taraf,
Fingers will be pointed towards your dry hair,
Ik nazar dekhyengay guzray huey saalon ki taraf,
They will also have a look at past years,
Choodiyon par bhi kai tanz kiyey jaayengay,
They will also talk in satirical way about your bangles,
Kaanptay haathon pay bhi fikray kasay jaayengay,
They will also make fun of your trembling hands
Log zaalim hai, har ik baat ka taana dengay
People are mean, they will try to make a point about everything
(Baaton baaton mein mera zikr bhi ley aayengay)2
They will deliberately bring my name during conversations
Unki baaton ka zara sa bhi asar mat lena,
Don't take their words to your heart,
Varna chehray kay taasur say samajh jaayengay,
Otherwise they will understand from your facial expressions
(Chahey kuch bhi ho sawaalat na karna unsay)2
Whatever happens, don't ask them any questions
Meray baaray mein koi baat na karna unsay,
Don't talk to them about me
Baat nikalegi to phir door talak jayeegi
If the word gets out, it will get to far off places

Nazar nazar say mila kar sharaab peetay hain
By making proper eye-contact, we drink
Hum unko paas bitha kar sharaab peetay hain
By making her sit next to us, we drink
Isee liyey to andhera hai maikaday mein bahut
That is why there is lots of darkness in the pub
Yahan garon ko jala kar sharaab peetay hain
Out here, we drink after burning down our houses
Hamey tumharay siva kuch nazar nahin aaata
We can't see anything else other than you
Tumhay nazar mein saja kar sharaab peetay hain
While keeping you in our eyes/mind we drink
Un kay hisay mein aati hai pyaas hi aksar
Those people often remain thirsty
Jo doosron ko pila kar sharaab peetay hain !
Who drink after making sure that everybody else has drunk
Nazar nazar say mila kar sharaab peetay hain
By making proper eye-contact We drink
Hum unko paas bitha kar sharaab peetay hain
And by making her sit next to us, we drink

25) SHAAM SAY AANKH MAIN: MP 3
Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night
Aaj phir aap ki kami si hai
Once again today, I miss you
Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night
Dafan kar do humay to sans mile
Bury me so that I can breathe again
Nafz kuch der se thhamii si hai
Recently, my breath has been somewhat halting
Aaj phir aap ki kami si hai
Once again today, I miss you
Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night
(Waqt rahataa nahin kahin tik kar)3
Time never waits for anyone
(Isaki aadat bhi aadami si hai)3
It is also a habit of human
Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night
(Koyi rishtaa nahin rahaa phir bhi)2
There is no relation anymore,
(Ek tasavir laazami si hai)2
Even then, there is a trace of image
Aaj phir aap ki kami si hai
Once again today, I miss you

(Chithhi na koyi sandesh
Without a letter or word
Hoo chithhi na koi sandesh
Without a letter or word
Jaane woh kaun sa desh
Nobody knows what kind of place
Jaha tum chale gaye)3
Where you have gone to,
Is dil pe laga ke thhes
This heart has been hurt
Jaane woh kaun sa desh
No one knows anything about that place
Jaha tum chale gaye
Where you have gone to
Ek aah bhari hogi
You must have said something
Hamne na suni hogi
We must not have heard
Jaate jaate tumne
Whilst you were going
Awaaz to di hogi
You must have called out
Har waqt yehi hai gham,
Everytime I have this sorrow
Us waqt kaha the hum
Where was I at that time
Kaha tum chale gaye
Where have you gone to?
Har cheez pe ashkon se
On every object/thing
Likha hai tumhaara naam
Is written your name
Ye raste ghar galiyaan
These roads and these houses
Tumhe kar na sake salaam
Can not say salam to you
Hai dil mein reh gayi baat,
In every heart stays these incomplete words
Jaldi se chhuda kar haath
Quickly you let go of our hands
Kaha tum chale gaye
Where have you gone to?
Chithhi na koyi sandesh
Ab yaadon ke kaante
The thorns of memories
Is dil mein chubhte hain
Pricks at my heart
Na dard thhaherta hai
This pain does not stop
Na aanson rukte hain
These tears do not stay back
Tumhe dhhundhh raha hai pyaar,
I carry on looking for you, my love
Hum kaise karein iqraar
How do I believe
Ke haan tum chale gaye
That yes you have gone
Chithhi na koyi sandesh

(Tera chehara kitana suhaana lagata hai)2
Your face is so radiantly pleasant
Tere aage chaand puraana lagata hai
The moon pales in comparison to you
Tera chehara kitana suhaana lagata hai
Your face is so radiantly pleasant
(Tirachhe tirachhe tiir nazar ke lagate hain)2
Arrows of slanted glance
(Siidhaa siidhaa dil pe nishaanaa lagataa hai)2
directly aim at my heart
Tere aage chaand puraanaa lagataa hai
The moon pales in comparison to you
Teraa cheharaa kitanaa suhaanaa lagataa hai
Your face is so radiantly pleasant
(Aag kaa kyaa hai pal do pal mein lagatii hai)2
Fire (passion) just strikes in a moment or two
(Bujhate bujhate ek zamaanaa lagataa hai)2
Its takes ages to put it out
Tere aage chaand puraanaa lagataa hai
The moon pales in comparison to you
Teraa cheharaa kitanaa suhaanaa lagataa hai
Your face is so radiantly pleasant
(Sach to ye hai phuul kaa dil bhii chhalanii hai)2
But truth is that radiant and beautiful face is injured
(Hansataa cheharaa ek bahaanaa lagataa hai)2
The laughter on your face is just an excuse
Tere aage chaand puraanaa lagataa hai
The moon pales in comparison to you
Teraa cheharaa kitanaa suhaanaa lagataa hai

(Aadmi aadmi ko kya dega)2
What can a person give to another person?
Jo bhi dega wahi khuda dega
Whatever you get, you will get it from God
(Mera qaatil hi mera munsif hai)3
My murderer is my judge too,
(Kya meray haq mein faisla dega)2
Will give the verdict in my favor
Aadmi aadmi ko kya dega
What can a person give to another person?
Jo bhi dega wahi khuda dega
Whatever you get, you will get it from God
(Zindagi ko qareeb say dekho)3
Looking at life from close quarters
Iska chehra tumhay rula dega
Its face will make you cry
Aadmi aadmi ko kya dega
What can a person give to another person?
Jo bhi dega wahi khuda dega
Whatever you get, you will get it from God
(Humsay poocho na dosti ka sila)3
Don't ask me what I get in return from my friendship
Dushmano ka bhi dil hila dega
It will make even the hearts of foes to melt
Aadmi aadmi ko kya dega,
What can a person give to another person?
Jo bhi dega wahi khuda dega
Whatever you get, you will get it from God
(Ishq ka zehr pe liyaa qaatil)3
I have eaten poison of love, Fakir
Ab naseeha de kya dawa dega
What medicine a Messiah can give now
Jo bhi dega wahi khuda dega
Whatever you get, you will get it from God
Aadmi aadmi ko kya dega,

30) GULSHAN KI FAQAT: MP 3
(Gulshan ki faqat phoolon se nahin, kaanton se bhi zeenat hoti hai)2
The beauty of a garden, is not only because of flowers but also due to thorns
Jeene ke liye is duniyaa mein, gham ki bhi zaroorat hoti hai
To live in this world, one also needs sorrows along with happiness
(Ae waaiz-e-naadaan kartaa hai too ek qayaamat kaa charchaa)2
Hey preacher, don't talk to me about The Day of Judgement
(Yahaan roz nigaahen milti hain, yahaan roz qayaamat hoti hai)2
Here, everyday our eyes meet, and everyday is A Day of Judgement
(Woh purshish-e-gham ko aaye hain, kuchh keh na sakoon, chup reh na sakoon)2
Inquiring about my sorrows; I can't say anything, and I cannot keep quiet either
(Khaamosh rahoon to mushkil hai, keh doon to shikaayat hoti hai)2
Keeping quiet will make things difficult, telling the reasons would be cause for complaints
(Karnaa hi padegaa zapt-e-alam, peene hi padenge yeh aansoo)2
A person has to bottle his/her emotions and swallow his/her own tears
(Faryaad-o-fughaan se ai naadaan, tauheen-e-muhabbat hoti hai)2
By crying out loudly and beseeching attention, you are only disgracing love
(Jo aa ke ruke daaman pe 'Saba' woh ashq nahin hai paani hai!)2
Hey 'Saba', the tears that flow and falls onto the lap, are not tears but plain water
(Jo ashk na chhalke aankhon se us ashk ki qeemat hoti hai)2
Of priceless value are those tears, which do not flow from the eyes
Gulshan ki faqat phoolon se nahin, kaanton se bhi zeenat hoti hai
The beauty of a garden, is not only because of flowers but also due to thorns
Jeene ke liye is duniyaa mein gham ki bhi zaroorat hoti hai
To live in this world, one also needs sorrows (along with happiness)

To live in this world, one also needs sorrows (along with happiness)

quote:Jagjit Singh married the popular singer Chitra Singh in 1969. They live in Vivek Singh Lane (a road dedicated to their son) on Breach Candy in Mumbai. Their only son, Vivek, died in a road accident in the early 1990s.
Who would have thought that more tragedy were to befall this great son of the soil?

Ghazal singer Chitra Singhâs daughter Monica Choudhary (50) was found dead at her home at Perry Cross Road, Bandra, in the early hours of Friday. Her family told the police that she had committed suicide.

BEYOND TIME: THE AGELESS MUSIC OF JAGJIT SINGH
The Pictorial Biography of a Superstar
Jagjit Singh is a musical superstar, an artiste who has almost singlehandedly revived the ghazal as an art form for our times. He has broken the barriers of language to endear this poetic form to even those who cannot understand its lyrics but respond intuitively to the emotion of his singing. Not just the ghazal but Urdu poetry as a whole has received a shot in the arm, thanks to his enormous popularity which extends to millions of fans around the world.
How did this happen, what was the path to super-stardom, what explains his amazing popularity?
Here is that story in a book authenticated by the maestro himself :
Here is that story in a book authenticated by the maestro himself :
"BEYOND TIME: The Ageless Music of Jagjit Singh" .
"Beyond Time" is more than just a biography. Based on close to 40 hours of recorded interviews with Jagjit and Chitra Singh, with members of their family, with friends, musicians, poets, film directors, colleagues, it is written with the warmth and intimacy of personal recollections. Its total authenticity comes from candid memories revealed for the first time; the words come to the reader just as they were spoken, evoking deeply-felt emotions of joy and sorrow.
In this simple and direct approach Jagjit Singh speaks in his own voice about his life and his music, his modest beginnings and years of struggle, his ultimate success, his personal and musical partnership with his wife, Chitra and the terrible tragedy they suffered with the death of their son. His own account is made richer by the participation of not only Chitra, but also those who know him best, voices that recount rare insights, anecdotes, observations that present both the public and private worlds of a musical phenomenon.
The book is structured in six chapters, with a Foreword by Lata Mangeshkar. While the main text follows a chronological narrative, sub sections capture facets of the man and his music, ranging from his thoughts on the ghazal and composition to the active encouragement he gives young singers and his quiet dedication to charitable causes. Also highlighted are six of his albums, from the pathbreaking "The Unforgettables" of 1976 to "Samvedna" released in 2002 featuring the poetry of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The text is complemented by photographs from Jagjit Singh's own collection, family and studio sources, as well as some specially shot for the occasion; a variety of images that capture the many faces of Jagjit Singh, from nostalgic sepia prints of the young eager student of music to mood shots of a mature artiste at the pinnacle of fame and career.
Pankaj Kodesia, the publisher of the book, says "it is a 'must read' not only for millions of Jagjit Singh's fans but all those who love music & musicians".
A collector's item, the book's limited edition carries an insert of a double CD album of Jagjit Singh's favourite selection over the last 3 decades, ghazals and nazms that follow the musical journey described in the text.

Jagjit Singh sets up trust to help Pakistani performers
By Anjum Gill
LAHORE: Three Years Ago:
Indian ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh has set up a trust to help Pakistani artistes and performed at a concert to raise funds for this purpose in Karachi that fetched Rs 7.5 million.
Visiting Pakistan for the second time in a month, Mr Singh told a press conference at the Avari Lahore hotel on Friday, that the trust was run by the Pakistan International Airline chairman and composer Arshad Mahmood. âThese men will prepare a list of needy artistes soon,â he said. The Sindh governor has donated Rs 1 million to this trust.
Mr Singh said he had donated $5,000 to Pakistani ghazal legend Mehdi Hassan for his medical treatment. Regarding the current decline of ghazal singing, he said people were coming back to ghazal now because they had become sick of noises. âThe next era is of ghazal.â
Missing his wife Chitra while performing at concerts, Mr Singh said, âShe just stopped singing after our son passed away. She was with him during his last visit.â
Asked about rumours regarding Mr Singhâs separation from his wife, his manager Parjeet Singh clarified, âJagjit and Chitra have been happily married for the last 30 years. They are not separated at all. She just stopped singing.â
Talking about the government support for classical singing in India, Mr Singh said, âYes, the government gives due patronage. But classical singers are otherwise patronised privately. They are busy in private conferences throughout the year.â
âElectronic media is not giving due coverage to ghazal singing. They are more into pop singing and only at certain points have crossed limits,â said Mr Singh.
He urged the Pakistani media to give exposure to classical music and promote ghazal singers.
About his favourite singers, Singh said, âWhen I was a child, Talat Mahmood was a popular singer in those days. Then I used to listen to Amir Khan. Thereafter Baray Ghulam Ali Khan and then at a later stage, I listened to Mehdi Hassan.â
About singing ghazals of any poet other than Ghalib, Mr Singh said, âI did a cassette on Qateel Shifai. I also sang quite a few ghazals by Javed Akhter and also that of Gulzar.
He said he could read an Urdu script. âI read Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, Ahmed Faraz and Nasir Qazmi and sang their ghazals. I sing ghazals when I like it.â
He said his last concert was a bad experience. âBut I didnât mind it. Iâm here to rectify it now,â he said.
He said exchange of artistes between Pakistan and India should take place more often. He was all for peace and said artistes should also play their role in promoting peace between the two countries. âPeople in India are happy over peaceful relations between the two countries,â he said.

Ghazal singer Chitra Singh on the high and low notes in her musical journey with humsafar Jagjit Singh
Musical childhood
âProbably, Iâve been singing right from my cradle. My mother was a trained classical singer. Baba also sang a bit. So I grew up with music (in Kolkata), even though Iâve no formal training. Iâd enjoy singing songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Bade Ghulam Ali saab. Talat Mehmood was my favourite.â
Tryst with Jagjit
âIn Mumbai, I happened to meet Jagjit (Singh). My first impression of him was that he was a lazy slob. One afternoon somebody rang the bell of my house. I opened the door as I was expecting composer Mahendra Singh (he was supposed to bring a male singer along to record few songs with me). There I saw a man, resting his hand on the door and almost asleep in that position. He was Jagjit. He came in, walked to the corner of the room, fell sleep, and even began snoring. Later, Mahendra Singh came and asked him to get up. He didnât wash his face, took the baja (harmonium) and monopolised it totally thereafter.â
Wizard of winks
âAfter a few meetings and rehearsals, one day I invited him home for a cup of tea. He saw the baja in my house and began singing. What he then sang, were not Mahendra Singhâs compositions. I loved his ghazals and noticed that his voice had no karigiri, no acrobatics. Through your ears it reached down to your heart. Slowly, I started getting impressed that there was more to him than just sleeping. But even today, he can fall asleep with his eyes open. Heâd be lying on the bed, watching TV, specks on, the remote in his hands; eyes
Love lore
âWe didnât fall in love instantly. The liking and loving took its time. What we felt for each other was a mature emotion, not a fleeting feeling. When I heard his renditions, expressions, and his improvisations, I was drawn to his music. I started singing in his style. He became my guru. I love his base voice1 full of emotion and passion. When he sings, you feel heâs singing for you.â
Echoes and silences
We lost our son Vivek 17 years back(in an accident). My world came crashing down. I was reduced to 43 kilos and looked like a ghost. I couldnât face people, I couldnât come out of my room. I lost my voice and it remained like this for 13 to 14 years. I didnât even hum in those years. If you donât use a sharp instrument, it loses its edge.â
Note Of Hope
But one morning, when I was looking at Vivekâs picture, a thought dawned upon me. I felt I was dishonouring my talent. Vivek was so proud of our singing. Heâd never want me to stop. I opened my mouth but I couldnât sing. But Iâve decided to sing, if nothing else than just to honour my sonâs memory. I accompany Jagit to the studios and enjoy the musical atmosphere there. Iâve kept my riyaz on. But I want to match my calibre or Iâll feel let down in my own eyes. One day I feel I am doing well, the other day I am back to square one. Iâve left it to Providence. Even if I do record, Iâll never go back to stage.â
