Katahar: This is the famous katahar curry or curry katahar that most of us look forward to at Jandi House. It's a rare food at home, meaning it's not something we cook daily like dhall, roti and rice. This particular katahar curry looks delicious and at many times it doesn't come out great if you don't know to cook it.

Now, what you see above is the result of these two uncooked fruits. Wonderful indeed, isn't it? This is what make Guyana great and make us strong. Finally, this is what you hold at times when people say to hold katahar. I would be happy if I can hold katahar every day. Got it?

You are a good katahar.

Here are some nice, dry coconuts. These are ready to great, or extract from the shell. There are so many things you can do or prepare with coconuts. Let's start with "coconut choka" and go down the line to some "sweet red bread" or salarah. We also used the shell to fuel the "fireside". This is just a little wonderful memory of beautiful Guyana.
Katahar and Coconuts is what makes a body strong. Enjoy!

Katahar is the most win/win crops to grow in Guyana. If it bear you get katahar; if it don't bear you tek katahar!
I don't much care for the curry myself. It taste like if you curry a piece of cloth.

not that I know of. It sells though. A lot.
I recently tried the 'cleaned' one that sells prepack from GY. Not bad.

Did someone say katahar taste like old cloth? Yes, because most people talk about katahar but cannot cook it right. No, if you cook it properly and talk less, then it will taste like vegetarian meat. The seed has to cook separate and make sure the coconut milk is nicely added. I see some of you have the taste bud for some good tasting katahar. The picture above is a good example what katahar curry should look like. For the rest of you, well, just hold katahar.

You must be talking about the "coah" or "Jack fruit" that you eat when it's ripe. That is naturally sweet.

Do you cook the katahar in the shell. I've had it like that once, only thing it takes sometime to peel.

For n_igga people information, katahar is the Hindi name of the fruit which is part of the jackfruit family and which is native to Southern and South East Asia. It is the national fruit of Bangladesh and makes a popular dish in North India, especially Uttar Pradesh from where indentured immigrants migrated to Guyana and other Caribbean lands. According to Wikipedia, "Jackfruit is also found in East Africa e.g. in Uganda and Mauritius, as well as throughout Brazil."

I'm always confused when looking at katahar and soursop. To me, they both look similar from the outside.

Nope. It's amongst the leaves hanging from a branch, not on the tree. It's too heavy to be on the tree..

Yes, the tree would shake like a man with big seeds!

Soursop has a smoother surface. Katahar is pointy and bumpy.
Soursop is smaller and has a different shape... the plant is a whole lot different.quote:Originally posted by Miraver:quote:Originally posted by kwaku:
