I'm aware that this is a sensitive topic so I shall be respectful to all concerned.

Growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s, I saw Indian women wearing orhni and rumal on the streets, in shops and markets, hospitals and cinemas, etc.

However, by the mid-1960s the pressures of Western culture in movies, books, newspapers and the increasing availability of secondary education and jobs to Indian women resulted in them abandoning headgear and adopting American/English fashion.

My first wife was a Muslim. Courting her in 1972-73, I saw her wearing hot pants and mid-riff in her parents home with their full approval. I had Muslim girlfriends who dressed like white women with the latest fashion.

I started seeing Muslim women with their head covered the Arab way around 1976-1980. They stood out in the Guyanese crowd.

When I asked how this had come about I was told that the Saudis and Libyans who were funding the Muslim organizations were instilling in the women the need to return to acceptable forms of dress.

Since that time more and more Guyanese Muslim women have been appearing in public with the type of headgear Shalimar Hack wears.

For me, whatever a woman wears is her business. My current wife is also a Muslim and she prefers to dress the Western way.

I have a deep sense of respect and admiration of women, especially muslim women who chooses to cover their heads. I see a lot of younger muslim women who cover their heads and they do so with pride and dignity.

Westerners try to create an impression that women who follow their religion are not "western" enough. This is nonsense.

Listen to a well cultured muslim woman speak as she displays confidence in the way she speaks and conducts herself.
