New $35,000 national minimum wage from July 1 – Dr. LuncheonPDFPrintE-mail

Friday, 10 May 2013 04:49

WITH effect from July 1, 2013, $35,000 will be the new national minimum wage in Guyana, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon announced yesterday.
Speaking at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President, New Garden Street, Georgetown, he said the initiative was strongly supported at the level of the tripartite committee of government, organised labour and the private sector.
He explained further that $8,000 would be the equivalent for weekly paid workers

and $200 per hour would be the equivalent for hourly paid workers.
“Cabinet noted that since 1977 when the public service minimum wage was promulgated, that a national minimum wage was not in existence in Guyana. This initiative was long overdue and enjoys the strong support of Cabinet for its implementation with effect July 1,” Dr. Luncheon said.

Five star, you ranked it?   Marriott are in the pedestrian ranks as hotels go and even if this is to be rated five stars it just goes to show how the people are treated as irrelevant.  But in any event, a minimum wage worker can if he wants spend a nite in good hotel without spending a year's salary.

The brand itself does not determine the rank. You should know this, even bmw and mercedes makes cars for all demographics. Even at your advanced age I still have to educate you, but my efforts have not been in vain as you continue to improve over the years.

I did not say the brand determines its rank. I said it is designed presently a  upscale mass use management project and specifically geared  for  exclusive marquee  patronage. They are designed like wholefoods, upscale, reasonably pricy and standardized. Marriott prize their management style on absolute sameness in all things and even have "boot camps" for their employees.

In any event, the object here was to illustrate the abject impoverished state of our folks at the bottom. The weekly salary of a minimum wage worker in Gy cannot buy a decent pot ( as illustrated on page 20 of Kaiteurnews,  news)

I have some guys where I work making $100k+ and bring their lunch from home to save the $4.50 lunch.  I don't know which world these clowns come from expecting Guyana minimum wage to afford mid-class life style.  These people are plain jokers.

In Guyana anyone can walk into GPH and get treated, maybe not the best, but something and walk away.  Try that in the US, you have a big bill following you.

The initiative the rise the minimum wage is welcome in all facet of the society, compared to the develop world, it may not seem to be a lot, but take the local per capita in consideration, its almost on par.

Druggie I know people who stayed at Marriott St Kitts.  Its a 3 star hotel.  Marriott can award what ever stars it wishes.  That makes me skeptical about the 5 stars as that is hard to get.  Dont see any Marriott among the list of the best hotels in any category.

And better believe it.  Marriott Guyana will  NOT be one of their best facilities.  It will be like Marriott Albany.

So you should report your findings to the 5 star allegiance based on your second hand "evidence",  so they can take St Kitts off the list. I am sure they will believe you over their own stringent rating system as you are the owner of your own all powerful survey. ahahahah

Druggie a major chain like Marriott can do what it likes and intimidate those who do not bend to their will.

When a list of the world's best hotels are named Marriott is NEVER on that list.  And even within Marriott there are different brands.  The mainline marriott brand is not known to be 5 star.

Like I said Marriott Gtwn will be like Marriott Albany, a decent hotel with decent food and nothing more.  In other words THREE STAR!

Even Marriott categorizes its main barnd as middle of the road.  Not as good as its JW and Renaissance brands, which would qualify as 5 star.

So please tell Marriott to classify list Marriott brand with its JW and Renaissance brands.

So baseman why does an island of 166 square miles and 300k people, not especially talented, produce a GDP of US$ 4.5 Billion vs Guyana, packed with gold a mere US$2.5B?

When you find the answer you will then learn why in 2013, after 5 years of recession in Barbados, Guyanese are still being lured to that island with a promise of better work than what is available to them in Guyana.

We have explained this to you many times before, the Whites and other foreigners invest in Barbados in the tourist industry due to blue water and white sand beaches. But now they have competition from the other islands and business looking down. hahahah

You are correct on this. It's because of plain simple theft.

Well, certainly a nice deflection from your idiotic post.  You see my man, Bbados and Guyana have two very different political history and very different economies.  Barbados primarily has tourist economy directly hinged to the USA and other Western economies.  The tourists infrastructure was built up and in place before independence.  Apart from their short lived trisk with Socialism under Tom Adams, Barbados continued with a tourist-friendly development.  Western interest owns and controls most of these assets and ensure profitability by channeling tourists into the island.

When Tom Adams experimented, the economy turned up-side-down overnight.  Another important difference, Bdos does not have an ethnic chasm like Guyana, it's mostly Afros who understand a safe and clean country is paramount to their economic survival, so they don't mess with it.

Guyana, as you are aware, has a product-oriented economy, it produces tangible goods and export.  This is Guyana.  Guyana's production assets were nationalized, raped and plundered into uselessness by the PNC.  This is a fact you cannot dispute, it was all destroyed over a 20-year period.

When the PPP took over in 1992, they took a skeleton of a nation with little functioning, absolutely debilitated,  I mean everything, even schools were gutted.  Compounding this was a massive debt taken and looted by the PNC. Being a producing economy, the GoG had to slowly rebuild from the bottom-up, attract investors and get the nation out from the stifling debt burden.

I and you, know Bdos never suffered this trauma and the effects of Tom Adam's trist were quickly reversed.

Now, do I need to go into the ethnic issues which have strangled the nation?  I will do so within the context of the graph below.  The graph plots Guyana and Surinam.  Take a look at the PNC performance to 1992.  You see a clear lift from 1992-1997, then a tapering off.  This begins the era of slo fiah mo fiah, once again a PNC undertaking.  You also see Surinam's economy rocketed from 2001/2001 and never looked back.

Guyana's was deferred until 2005/2006 by the onslaught of your PNC Buxton/Agricola FF terrorists.  2005/2006 the "phantomization" initiative was successfully undertaken and the economy rocketed on the same trajectory of Surinam.  Taking all that into consideration, one can only induct that, even ignoring the destruction wreaked by the PNC which continued until 2005/2006, Guyana would have been comfortably with the realm of $4-5 Bil GDP.
