Deepa Mehta is a socially conscious filmmaker.

Unlike Bollywood types, her films examine serious Indian societal issues. Of course, one cannot expect the orthodox and narrow-minded folks to like her films.

REv, I saw this film, it is really good. I believe Metha also made a movie call WATER, it is also excellent. They both tackle serious social issues.

Fire is about Lesbians.

Haven't seen this one, but i will have to make some time and watch it.

 

Saw Water....and it was very eye-opening to say the least.

I CAN SEE WHY THE MOVIE FIRE OFFENDED AND PIS$ED OFF LOTS ON INDIAN MEN---it addresses a lot of truths.

 

* Lots of Indian wives are trapped in loveless, sexless marriages----the lesbianism was the affair between 2 oppressed wives living under the same roof.

 

* The movie also addresses the dysfunctional Indian family---it's not healthy for a bunch of in-laws to live together.

 

* There is also a pressure on women to reproduce.

 

* Some hindus have a reverence for celibacy---in the movie Radha is in a sexless marriage---and her husband spends money on some guru preaching the "heavenliness" of celibacy.

 

WHO WANTS TO DISCUSS THE MOVIE ?

 

* By the way, remember when Sita and her husband were at the Taj Mahal---they were married for only 3 days----she told him she likes ROMANCE movies---he replied he likes kung fu and Jackie chan---and we find out later he has a Chinese mistress.

 

* WOMEN CRAVE INTIMACY; LOTS OF MEN JUST WANT A HOLE THAT PROVIDES FRICTION AND LUBRICATION.

I saw Fire and Water years ago. I remember them being very deep.

Deepa Mehta is one of India's top film maker. Not your typical bollywood fluff and songs.

Actually....Deepa Mehta is Canadian!

She went back to India to make these movies and met with very strong oppoisiton.....but she persevered and made excellent movies.

So is Lisa Ray, the star of Water

 

* She played the role of Radha---the big sister-in-law.

Rev, SRK is very talented. One year he was the four nominees for best actor. Never seen that before. But you are right. He did not have the looks like his contemporary Hritik Roshan.

* He must have been blessed with some great scripts and maybe he was/is a great actor.

 

* But in the looks department that bloke is more suited to work at that Patel grocery riya and Miraver shop at.

 

* Now I can understand the ladies drooling over John Abraham---the young man has the chiseled features and the symmetry---he is, indeed, handsome. 

 

* But handsome Abraham hasn't achieved 10% of the success ugly duckling SRK has achieved.

Rev, I don't think there will be another soon to enjoy SRK's level of success. There are too many to share the pie now.

 

* There is no question SRK has been immensely successful in Bollywood.

 

* I was just curious how such an ugly duckling climbed such great heights.

 

* Maybe he was magical delivering his lines and doing what male Indian actors do---dance, cry, sing, run around trees,etc, etc---maybe he is just a great actor. That's it.
