"I fell in love with Dilip saheb when I was 12 years old. Beyond my own romance (with him), I can't see anything. In real life, he is very loving, very polished and a sophisticated man," Saira had once said in an interview.

(BBC) A Bollywood film starring veteran actor Dilip Kumar in the lead is set for a theatrical release for the first time, 23 years after it was made.

Dilip Kumar
VS Rajender Babu, director of Aag Ka Dariya (River of Fire), told the BBC the film did not get released initially because of a financial dispute.

In the intervening years, the original print of the film was badly damaged.

But Mr Rajendra Babu said he recently found a “perfect print” of the film with a distributor in Singapore.

“I was surprised when I saw the negative of the print, it was kept so carefully. The print has been sent to the lab for colour correction and post-production work,” he said.

“I believe this will be his [Dilip Kumar’s] last film and he will be happy to see it,” he added.

The veteran actor is 90 and has been in poor health for some time now.

Dubbed “The Tragedy King” for his roles in many Bollywood classics in the 1950s and 60s, he is one of India’s best-loved actors.

Described by critics as the ultimate method actor in India, he has won more awards than any other Bollywood star. Over his long career, he has won eight Filmfare awards, India’s version of the Oscars.

In Aag Ka Dariya, Kumar plays an Indian air force officer and the story revolves around corruption in the defence forces. Well-known actress Rekha plays the leading lady in the film.

Mr Rajendra Babu, who has directed several award-winning Kannada and Hindi films, said the film had been cleared by the Censor Board and would be released some time in the new year.

According to reports, Aag Ka Dariya starring Dilip Kumar and directed by VS Rajender Babu will be released sometime in Januray 2014. The reports confirm that the film didn’t see the light of the day earlier because of a financial dispute and also because the original print of the film was badly damaged in the intervening years. But Babu recently discovered a “perfect print” of the film with a distributor in Singapore and was surprised to find it that it was kept so carefully.

If the film releases, it may be considered 91-year-old Kumar's last film. Interestingly, the film also stars actress Rekha.

Cant wait to hear the songs from this movie, it seldom happens when hindi films are finished in the making, then unforseen circumstances caused it for not being released.

Dilip Kumar on His 91st Birthday

Published: 11th December 2013 12:04 PM

Last Updated: 11th December 2013 12:04 PM

Dilip Kumar was not getting the right mood to shoot an intense scene prior to the climax in Footpath. Two days passed and director Zia Sarhadi was worried. He had to complete the film in time. Undecided about what he should do, the thespian went to Brabourne Stadium and concentrated on playing cricket.

Remembering the incident Dilip Kumar says, “I was totally involved in batting. After hitting a couple of boundaries I had a strange feeling within me. Putting an end to the game I came back to the pavilion. Then I called Zia Sarhadi directly and informed I was ready to shoot my scene that very day. Zia Sarhadi spent no time and organised the shooting at Ranjit Studio.”

Dilip Kumar broke down emoting, ‘Uth Bani Nashu Aa Gaya’ sans glycerin in his eyes. He was crying after the sad demise of his elder brother in Footpath. The shot was Okayed in one take proving Dilip Kumar was peerless in pathos.

Described by Satyajit Ray as the ultimate method actor, Dilip Kumar stands tall as a polished performer though he retired from acting 15 years ago due to health reasons. Till date he remains the actor most everyone – like Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan and Shahrukh Khan – has imitated. His piercing looks, highly medulative dialogue delivery balanced perfectly with his usage of the right palm makes him the acting icon whose assets have been dedication, intensity and versatility.

Dilip Kumar narrates an interesting anecdote, ”In Jogan, after Nargis leaves for her heavenly abode whilst praying, I was confused how to react. There were no dialogues. Director Kidar Sharma asked me to throw a stone in a pond, watch the water ripples and silently walk away. The shot created cinematic magic and it was the one with which the film ended.”

Dilip Kumar thinks highly of his late colleagues. He says, “We shared a mutual set of unspoken ethics and had a deep silent regard for each other. Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and I slogged it to the top on basis of sheer merit and hard labour. We never went for unnecessary publicity.” According to him Amitabh Bachhan is the best star, actor in the past four decades and Sanjeev Kumar was an amazing actor who truly took over after Ashok Kumar, Motilal and Balraj Sahni, the gharana of natural subdued acting.

Andaz, Daag, Devdas and Gunga Jumna stand testimony of great acting abilities. When he was getting stereo typed in tragedy, Dilip Kumar opted for comedies and proved he was equally good at it. Explains Dilip Kumar, “I adopted for a natural design for my light hearted characters in Azad, Kohinoor, Leader and Ram Aur Shyam. They needed a great sense of timing. Whilst method requires rehearsals, preparations and efforts, comedy is spontaneous.”

The way he performed scenes with his heroines has also become classic. Dilip Kumar says, “I enjoyed best of relations with all of them. Kamini Kaushal, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Nimmi and Madhubala were highly gifted. So were Vyjayantimala, Waheeda Rehman and Rakhee. I fondly remember my histrionic interaction with late Smita Patil.

As I asked her, ‘Tum Vijay Ki Bahu Ho’, she conveyed an intense look of respect which spoke volumes. Smita was an accomplished actress.” Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal lipped by the thespian for Talat Mehmood is an immortal number. So are Shame Gham Ki Kasam, Suhana Safar and Nain Lar Gaye Re. Admits Dilip Kumar, “Talat understood the tragic lover in me too well. Rafi’s amazing versatility suited my songs of different moods. Mukesh also did true justice to songs. I lipped for him.”

Court lifts stay on redevelopment of

Dilip Kumar's Pali Hill bungalow

Sharmeen Hakim Indorewala & Vickey Lalwani, Mumbai MirrorNov 1, 2013, 12.00AM IST

In a breather for the ailing legend Dilip Kumar, a magistrate court has lifted the stay on the redevelopment of his Pali Hill bungalow which was at the centre of a three-year-old property dispute. In fact giving further relief to the actor, judge D N Surwase refused to give the plaintiff, property developer Samir Bhojwani, time to approach another court by staying the current order.

The 91-year-old was dragged to court in 2010 by Bhojwani, who had leased land out to him, after the actor started demolishing the bungalow (48, Pali Hill) for redevelopment purposes. And last month the same court had stayed the re-development.

The mood was expectedly tense at the actor and wife Saira Banu's bungalow when her brother Sultan left for the Magistrate Court yesterday. At 3.30 pm, Sultan made the first call to Saira and she then immediately rushed to her ailing husband's side to break the good news to him. When contacted, Saira told TOI, "It is wonderful news. Yusuf saab (as she fondly calls him) is delighted. Allah kare that everything ahead too goes well."

The actor was hospitalised last month after a heart scare and the dispute, which is still in its initial stages, apparently had a telling effect on the thespian's health. Soon after the case was filed in 2010, Dilip Kumar was issued notices by the court to file a reply to the complaint but his lawyers kept seeking adjournments for almost 3 years.

A source close to Bhojwani told TOI, "We can understand that Dilip Kumar was unwell last month but the complaint was filed three years ago. Did they not have the time to file the affidavit all this while? It was only after the stay was granted that they raced into action."

Currently, the thespian lives in the same locality but at his wife Saira Banu's house next to Sanjay Dutt's residence. Bhojwani had leased out his land, estimated to be worth Rs 150 crore, where Dilip Kumar built a two storey bungalow which has been his residence since 1953. When the veteran started demolishing the bungalow three years ago to construct a highrise, Bhojwani objected claiming that the land was leased to the actor for 999 years, but with the caveat that the lessee would not alter or demolish the structure without the owner's consent.

Saira Banu, Dilip Kumar and Sultan will soon be meeting a team of lawyers to decide further course of action.

Saira Banu: Dilip Kumar's biography will be out in early 2014
Dilip Kumar turned 91 on Wednesday (December 11, 2013)
Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar's biography, which was earlier scheduled to be released on his 91st birthday, will now come out early next year, said his wife and yesteryear actress Saira Banu.

The biography, written by author Uday Tara Nayar, who is also a close family friend of the Bollywood thespian, is ready. It is likely to be released in January or in the beginning of February 2014.

Dilip Kumar turned 91 on Wednesday (December 11, 2013).

Ms Banu said they planned to release the book on 11.12.13, a special date, but could not do so because of the legend's weak health.

"Actually, we were planning to launch Dilip saab's biography today (Wednesday) and everybody said that it is a very special date, but unfortunately, we could not as he fell ill," she said.

"Now, Inshallah, we will launch the biography in January end or in the beginning of February next year," she added.

The two-part book focuses on the actor's nine-decade long journey, his love story with Saira Banu, some untold stories as well as rare pictures of the thespian and his family members.

In the past, three books on Dilip Kumar by Vinita Lamba, Sanjit Nawrekar and Lord Meghnad Desai were published.

Dilip Kumar had a quiet celebration on his 91st birthday with close friends, family and his team of doctors. Saira said they chose for quiet celebration because of his health.

However, she has plans for a grand party for the film fraternity at the launch of thespian's biography.

"We have celebrated this birthday quietly with close friends, family and a team of doctors because we don't want to put much strain on him," Saira, who has worked with Dilip Kumar in films like Gopi and Sagina, said.

"If you (reporters) remember two years back we had a grand celebration of his birthday. Everyone came and spent time with him. So, Inshallah, we will invite all the industry people at the book launch," she added.

One of the best performers on the Indian silver screen, Dilip Kumar in his six decades' career worked in much appreciated films like Jwar Bhata, Mela, Naya Daur, Devdas, Madhumati and Mughal-E-Azam.

Asha is undeterred by the fact that Dilip retired from acting in 1998. PHOTO: FILE

MUMBAI: From the evergreen Dev Anand, to superstar Rajesh Khanna, Asha Parekh has worked with almost all the leading icons of Indian cinema, except Dilip Kumar. The 71-year-old veteran actress confesses that she is well aware of this fact and is still waiting to work with the thespian.

She received great opportunities to work with Shammi Kapoor in hits such as Dil Deke Dekho and Teesri Manzil, Dev Anand in Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai and Rajesh Khanna in Aan Milo Sajna and Kati Patang, but laments that she never got the chance to share the screen with Dilip.

The star of the 1960s and 1970s Bollywood told IANS in an interview: “I really want to work with Yusuf sahib [Dilip Kumar]. It’s a longstanding wish and I am still waiting to work with him.”

Asha is still hopeful, despite the fact that Dilip, 90, retired from acting after Qila in 1998. “If I get an opportunity, I would just run and do that project. This is one thing I am looking forward to,” said the Padma Shri civilian award winner.

There were reports that Dilip Kumar and Asha never came together on the screen because of animosity between them, but the actress claims that this rumour is rubbish: “There was no animosity [between us]. It was a mistake by a journalist who just cooked up the story. I was very angry with him [the journalist] for coming up with such stories and spoiling my relationship with Yusuf sahib. I have a very, very good relationship with Yusuf sahib and [his wife] Saira Banu. I was terribly hurt by that report.”

Despite being known as one of the best dancers of her era, Asha can’t appreciate the growing trend of item numbers. “I don’t like item numbers, but people like it and so I can’t say anything,” said the veteran actor, “I would hope the folk dances come back in our films.”

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan aankho mein udaasi chhaayi hai
Desires kindle in the heart sorrow is entrenched in my eyes
Ye aaj teri duniya se hamein Taqdeer kaha le aayi hai
Today from your world where has fate brought me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Kuchh aankh mein aansoo baaki hain (Jo mere gham ke saathi hain)2
Some tears in the eyes are still left the friends of my grief
(Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain)2 Bas main hu meri tanhaai hai
There is the heart but no desire of the heart just me and my lonliness

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Na tujhse gila koyi hamko na koyi shikaayat duniya se
I don't have to blame you no complaints to the world
(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
When the destination was four steps away fate has pushed me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Kuchh aisi aag lagi man mein jeene bhi na de marne bhi na de
Some type of fire was lit in my heart it won't let me live, it won't let me die
(Chup hu to kaleja jalta hai)2 Bolu to teri ruswaayi hai
If I am silent, my chest burns if I talk, then it will be your disgrace

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart
