Berbice replacing G/town as country’s murder capital

MARCH 16, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

The county of Berbice seems to be heading towards becoming the murder capital of Guyana, while the actual capital city of Georgetown is seemingly the safest place to be.
A perusal of the police crime statistics reveal that Berbice alone accounted for 11 of the 25 murders that occurred in the country up to the end of February. Add the murder of Indrawattie Somwar which occurred earlier this month at Corriverton and it’s easy to see why Berbice is holding the unenviable title of murder capital.
Compare this with Georgetown and its environs (‘A’ Division), which had no murder up to February month end. This figure was only marred recently with the murder of Cuban National Joel Perez Laffita last week and Monday’s discovery of the body of re-migrant Soesdyke farmer Anthony Breedy.
Last year around the same period under review, ‘A’ division was leading in the number of murders, which included two executions and two committed during robberies.
This year, of the 12 murders in Berbice, eight were committed during robberies, making the county one of the most violent areas in the country.murder
With the exception of domestic and robbery, all other categories of murders have declined so far.
The East Coast and West Coast Demerara Divisions are joint second with five murders apiece so far, while the Interior accounts for three. Linden only had one up to February 29.
Commander of the police ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken attributed the low murder rate in and around the city to the heightened posture of his ranks. This is in keeping with the highly effective “Operation Dragnet”, which was launched late last year.
He spoke of improved community relations and an open-door policy in dealing with members of the public.
“Whenever people have a problem with the police and they come to me, they are leaving my office satisfied,” the Commander told this newspaper in an invited comment.
He said that while ranks on patrol are focused on interacting freely with the public, they remain unyielding to the task of maintaining a lid on crime.
Additionally, the Division is utilizing crime analysis from the Divisional Information Management System to target crime hotspots, an initiative that is increasingly bearing fruit.
As at Friday last, ‘A’ Division boasted a 19% drop in serious crimes.
Meanwhile, it is hoped that recent changes in the command structure in Berbice will see a turnaround in the crime prevention and crime-fighting situation there.
Recently-promoted Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Amsterdam, who was Second in Command to Hicken in ‘A’ Division, has been posted to head the Berbice Division.
While ranks in Berbice have managed to crack a criminal gang that was responsible for most of the robbery/murders in the county, there are still a few pockets of criminal elements that are causing a few headaches.

A lone gunman on Tuesday evening escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash from a New Amsterdam, Berbice variety store but not before opening fire on the businesswoman and her employee. The incident occurred sometime around 19:00h.

Guyana Times understands that the unmasked man fled on foot with a bag containing the day’s sales of Sankar’s Variety, located in downtown New Amsterdam, after discharging two shots in the direction of the two persons. Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident.

However, one of the store’s owners pursued the gunman, hitting him with a car but he still managed to escape into an ally and eventually disappearing. During the chase, some of the stolen money was left behind and was recovered by the owners.

According to reports, the gunman struck as the proprietors were closing the business. This newspaper was told that Babita Sankar was in the store along with a female employee closing up while her husband, Danny Sankar, had gone to the parking lot to get his car.

The tramatised wife related to Guyana Times that she had observed a stranger standing behind a utility pole situated next to the business and enquired from her employee whether she knew him.

“She (employee) told me that he was standing there for a while and said she doesn’t know him. And as soon as she said so, he come and stand up next to me and say give me all the money. And I say what kind of money you want? And I jump on the table. And he pull out the gun and fire one bullet,” the woman recalled.

She noted that at the time she was not aware that the shot fired at her had missed. Realising the danger, the female employee sprung into action and tried to hold the gunman. He then fired a second shot, this time at the employee.

“When the gun fire, I loose he and run,” the young employee told this publication.

After grabbing the money bag which the Sankars were preparing to take into the car, the gunman escaped by running along Strand Street and then into Chappell Street.

At this time, Danny Sankar became aware of what had transpired and pursued the fleeing man with his car. He was able to hit the gunman, causing him to lose his balance. However, the man was able to make it into a nearby alley and disappeared.

Babita further related to this newspaper that her husband returned with some of the money the thief fled with and another portion was collected by persons who work at the neighbouring store.

Up to press time, Danny Sankar and the Police were still searching the area for the suspect.

Reports also state that investigators are still trying to determine the number of perpetrators who were involved in this crime. It has also been said that the possibility of this act being retaliation to the closing of the Wales Sugar Estate is not being ruled out.
“We are not ruling anything out; it could have been a robbery or it could be that people are upset with the closure and blaming the senior ones at the Estate for it. We are still investigating, so it would not be prudent to speculate at this time. Thankfully nobody was physically harmed during this ordeal,” an officer stated.

Smyth Street man executed

– suspect believed to be gunman held

Former robbery accused, O’Riley Small, was riddled with bullets by a gunman dressed in a ‘hoodie’ in his Smyth Street, Georgetown yard around 03.30 hrs yesterday.
Small, 31, of Lot 2 Smyth Street, was shot at least ten times just as he returned home after a night out at one of the city night spots. He was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
According to information received, Small had just entered his yard through the front gate and was walking through a dark pathway at the side of the house to get to the back of the property when a man, dressed in a hooded T-shirt, confronted him.
There are reports that the father of one said, “Hey boy move from deh” to the gunman who then opened fire.
Small reportedly tried to flee, but slipped and fell. This newspaper understands that as Small lay on the ground, the hooded shooter stood above him and pumped several bullets into him. He died on the spot.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that police have detained two suspects and have impounded a car. He declined to suggest a possible motive for the killing.

Kaieteur News understands that one of the suspects, known as ‘Max,’ is believed to be the gunman. Police reportedly arrested him at a city hotel and bar after finding a hooded garment similar to the gunman’s in his car.
The suspect is reportedly employed as an armed security guard at the same hotel and bar at which he was detained. A source said that Small had also worked at the same bar.
Several relatives and friends gathered at Small’s home yesterday as they learnt about his death.
His aunt, Gail Ann Edwards, said that she was awakened by the sound of gunshots and then heard her nephew’s screams.
“When we run out we see he (Small) lying in blood. He was dead already,” his aunt lamented.
Relatives could not say if Small had any problems with anyone.
“All that we know is that the neighbour said that they saw a silver-grey car was parked there (in close proximity to the house). We can’t say if it was waiting on him or what,” the aunt said.
When asked if Small had any problem with the law, his relatives said that the father of one was a loving and jovial person who was always targeted by the police.
“The police always harass him. We had to go the media and so to get this harassment to stop. When any robbery happened, they (police) always coming to pick him up and then they hold he for 72 hours and loose he,” a relative said.
In January 2010, Small was shot when a gunman opened fire and killed one of his friends, Vibert Weekes, a short distance away from the popular “Red Dragon” night club on Robb Street.
There are reports that a bet of $100,000 made between Small and the gunman cost Weekes his life.
In January 2012, Small was remanded to prison on an attempted murder charge.
The allegation was that on January 9, 2012, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded New York-based Guyanese Felix Alleyne, who lost one of his kidneys after Small shot him.
That case was subsequently dismissed after Alleyne refused to testify in the case.
In June 2012, Small, a former footballer was shot three times at a football match by a gunman who approached him from behind.
In November 2013, he was among three who were jointly charged with break and enter and larceny committed on Central Electronics located on Robb Street, Georgetown.
It was alleged that they stole $9.2M worth of items, including a flat screen television set and a metal safe, along with cash.
Some have suggested that Small may have been slain for his alleged role as an informant.
In February, 2013, three bandits were shot dead by police, while attempting to enter the premises of businessman Wayne Heber at Premnaranjan Place, Prashad Nagar. Relatives of Leon Gittens, one of the slain men, alleged that O’ Riley Small had come to Gittens’ home and called him out that night.

Elusive bandit nabbed after jumping into trench

MARCH 20, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

After being on the run for just over 24 hours and managing to elude capture on a few occasions a bandit who had robbed a popular New Amsterdam businessman and his wife on Tuesday evening was fished out of a trench like an alligator.
The man was captured around 21:00 hrs in trench at Angoy’s Avenue after he was cornered on a motor bike which had arrived to take him to safety. The bandit after being ambushed and dealt some blows, plunged into a trench and remained there for a considerable length of time until the police came and rescued him from the angry residents.
The bandit who reportedly hails for Ruimveldt in Georgetown had pounced upon the E and B General Merchandise and Candy Shop situated at Lot 12/13 Strand, New Amsterdam, next to the New Amsterdam market.
That business is operated by Danny Sankar, called “Dutty Dan”, and his wife, Babita Sankar.
The thief who was unmasked and armed with a handgun had made his move around 18:45 hrs just about the time the proprietors were about to lock up.
The man had opened fire three times, one on a friend of the business couple who was helping them pack up, once at Babita and the third time at Danny, all from close range. Luckily he missed all three.
The bandit escaped with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth in cash, jewelry and phone cards
Danny Sankar, who had left to collect his car, was just returning with his vehicle. At the same time the thief was escaping so the man accelerated his vehicle and chased after the bandit through Chapel Street and was shot at, but the bandit missed.
Sankar however managed to strike the thief at least four times with his vehicle causing a bend on the bumper.
On the last occasion the bag the bandit was carrying with the money burst and some of the cash fell out. As he was about to turn around to tackle the supposedly injured bandit, the thief scaled a fence and disappeared in a yard.
The police were informed and responded in a timely manner with the SWAT team, patrols and crime scene detectives. However the man managed to elude capture by hiding in a drain, a toilet and an empty cinema. He reportedly spent most of the time in a dirty alleyway.
He had during his escape run and left behind a haversack, a toque and a pack of cigarettes.
He was reportedly seen crawling out early in the morning, but before the police could arrive he was whisked away in a vehicle to a house in Fort Ordnance.
Subsequent checks at the house found a pair of muddy boots which were soaked to be washed.  The man was not there. The occupant of that house was arrested and taken into custody.
Although injured, the man spent most of Wednesday moving from place to place in his effort to elude capture.
Further intelligence led his pursuers to Angoy’s Avenue where he was captured.
He has reportedly confessed to the crime and told investigators he was sent to do a job. He did not know who the man was that he was going to rob. He took investigators back to the locations where he reportedly hid during the night. He also told investigators that he lost everything and threw away the gun during the night. Neither the gun nor the money was found.
He is expected to be charged shortly.
Sankar had informed the media that it was the fourth time that he has been robbed. He had stated that he had applied three times for a licensed firearm, but on each occasion he was denied. He has been operating his business on large a scale for about 25 years now.

Imagine trying to earn an honest dollar at the age of 62. For a man, it might seem normal

but when a woman that age has to stay awake all night to guard someone else’s property, it can be terrifying, especially, when her own home is being broken into almost every  night when she is at work.
This is the scary experience Bibi Baksh, a Hill Street, Albouystown resident is faced with daily.
While she is at work, she has to be wondering whether her house is being sabotaged. Almost every week, she has to buy new padlocks for her door.
On Saturday, Baksh visited this newspaper in tears and related her ordeal. She said that thieves tried to break into her home that morning.
Yesterday, the woman returned to Kaieteur News and claimed that that same night, thieves tried to break into her home again while she was at work. This is mostly being done by people in the village.
Baksh explained that after her husband passed away several years ago, her house was destroyed by a fire. It is suspected that someone in the village set the place on fire.
The woman claimed that since the fire, she worked and gradually repaired the bottom flat of the property where she currently resides with her son.

Baksh shows the door the bandits tried to break to gain entry into her house.

“I don’t trouble anyone in that place because I know what type of people they are. I go to work and I come home,” Baksh said.
In 2014, bandits emptied her home. “They took everything except the fridge. They didn’t even leave underwear for me to wear. All my clothes they went with.”
She said that she worked and even purchased a few items on hire purchase. “It’s not easy to know when most people sleeping in the night, I have to work and then these people (thieves) coming for the little money I work for.”
She explained that because of her age, no one is willing to employ her so she does not have any other choice but to continue working as a security guard at her company.
For last week, thieves tried to go into her home more than four times. “I was at work and I heard that someone trying to break into my home and I call and sent my son, who lives about four houses away. When he go, he see the boy and they (thieves) tried to shoot him. It hurts me to know I could have cost my son his life.”
Last Saturday, she left home around 07:00 hrs to run an errand. When she returned home, someone had again tried to enter the house by cutting one of the padlocks.
“Imagine, I went to tell Courts that I wouldn’t be able to pay them this month and by the time I reach home, people done try to break in my house. I am so sick and tired of this. I don’t know what else to do,” she cried.
This woman has visited the Police Stations more than anyone could imagine. “One time I went to Ruimveldt Police Station and the woman (police) took my information and say that they would send someone. Up to now, no one came.”
She also made a report at the same station last Saturday but the police never visited her home.
The Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken could not be reached for a comment yesterday.
The woman is pleading for the police’s intervention.

The pensioner’s body was discovered around 21:30 hours on Tuesday with wounds to the head and plastic handcuffs wrapped tightly around the throat.
His entire house was ransacked and his licensed shotgun was missing.

Cummings Lodge man killed in drunken brawl

By Shirley Thomas

A PHAGWAH celebration in Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday afternoon turned sordid with the sudden murder of a man, who moments before had left a neighbour’s home where there was feasting, dancing and jollification.Dead is Tularam Sonalall, also called “Rajesh” and “Bushman.” He was stabbed in the neck with a ‘sting ray’ bone, allegedly by a man with whom he had an argument.
The stabbing death took place shortly after 15:00hrs. A woman who lives not far away from where Sonalall dropped dead, said he lived alone, worked at sea and was well liked by neighbours.

She painfully recalled that he had spent the greater part of the day at her home, having fun with other friends and later left. The woman even mentioned having cooked and served the guests (including Sonalall) with dhal puri and boulanger, parasad, channa and other sweet meats.
Moments after he left, the woman said an alarm was raised, stating that a man had been murdered and was lying on the road, but when she raced to the scene and saw his body on the road, she could not believe what she was seeing.

Meanwhile, a man who also lives close to Sonalall, said he was made to understand that the two men who were relatives, had gone to a nearby shop and were imbibing alcohol when an argument broke out between them.
They both left the shop and seemed to be headed in the direction of Sonalall’s home when he was stabbed. The man recalled that he was upstairs in his home when he heard an argument on the road and one appeared to be pursuing the other. When he looked out the window, he saw Sonalall lying lifeless.
The neighbour, who declined to be named, blamed the incident on alcoholism, stating that intoxication was in a large measure responsible for the men, in particular, displaying such behaviours.

“We recognised that he had a drinking problem and needed attention, and we as neighbours, gave him lots of attention.”
Generally, residents spoke well of the deceased, stating that he had worked at sea, but whenever he was at home, he would look out for neighbours and cooperate with them in any way possible.

“Receiving such news is really hard on us. He will be sadly missed,” neighbours contend.
The police were summoned and the man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
There are however, unconfirmed reports that the alleged killer may have been injured as well. He was taken into custody as police continue their investigation.

the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Shawn Sandy, on Thursday last.
The incident occurred some time around 15:00hrs at King Buoy Hole, Mazaruni.
The police said that 40-year old Sandy, of Alexander Village, Georgetown, allegedly found a handgun and was showing it to Khan when a round was discharged.
The round struck Sandy on his right hand and Khan, to his abdomen. Khan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital while Sandy was admitted to the hospital under police guard.  Investigations are currently ongoing.
However, relatives of the deceased are not convinced that the shooting was accidental since they said, Sandy gave “different versions” of the story to the police.
“Sandy told the police that he found the gun, a 9mm pistol, in a clump of bushes and was cleaning the barrel when it went off. One time he said that Feroz go to chop him and he shot him. He (Sandy) called Feroz wife and told her that he shot and killed Feroz. The police called her in for questioning (Saturday),” a cousin of the deceased man said yesterday.
Khan was laid to rest yesterday morning. The post mortem (PM) report, according to the relative, revealed that Khan died from ruptured lungs. This, she said, resulted from the “explosive shots” that were used.
Khan is survived by his two children and his pregnant wife.

Dead is Kevon Payne of Lot 36 Sussex Street, Charlestown. The father of two is said to be in his early 20s. According to reports, at about 21:00h on Tuesday, two gunmen opened fire on Payne in the presence of his family, shortly after he had returned home from duty.

When Guyana Chronicle arrived on the scene, scores of residents had swarmed the street as they expressed anger over the shooting. There was also a high police presence, with ranks keeping a close watch on the many spent shells that were scattered all over the scene of the crime.

Payne’s brother, Vellon Thorne, told Guyana Chronicle that he was with his brother at the time of the shooting.

“We were sitting in front of the house, two guys came up on a motorcycle and start shooting at my brother,” he recalled.

According to him, it was not long after a van load of police ranks arrived on the scene.

“The police pull up in a split second and start a shooting too, along with the guys them on the bike,” Thorne alleges. He said he is very familiar with one of the policemen.

Meanwhile, Thorne and other residents are alleging that police ranks had aided the gunmen. Thorne, like many of the other family members and residents who were around at the time, managed to escape unharmed.

The enraged young man spoke openly about the shooting, and went into a fit of rage when he raised his head and noticed one of the policemen whom he alleged shot his brother.

“Look the man who killed my brother!” he screamed as he advanced towards the rank. It was not long before the accused rank was surrounded by fuming friends and relatives who cried murder. The rank was escorted off the scene after seeking advice.

Payne’s aunt, Pauline Paris, who wept bitterly on the scene, said she not only witnessed the shooting, but after running to safety, was able to see the licence plate of the vehicle the alleged killers were in.

“When the police started to ring out the heavy bullets, I had to run,” the woman said. Payne’s mother was too distressed to speak to this newspaper.

The Guyana Police Force is, however, maintaining that ranks were in close proximity when they heard gunshots and quickly responded. But there they were met with resistance and the shooters managed to escape.

Bandits strike in Laing Avenue

MARCH 31, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

With police patrols in the city distracted by the fatal shooting in Albouystown, two armed bandits took advantage to terrorize a Laing Avenue household on Tuesday night.
The men held a gun to the head of a 14-year-old boy whose foot was in a cast, and forced a visitor to lie face down on the ground as they relieved him of his valuables.
The bandits timed their act to perfection as they managed to escape mere minutes before a police -mobile patrol passed the location.
Kaieteur News understands that Faye Daniels, who operates a food stall in the city, had left her 18-year-old daughter and her 14-year-old son at home to tend to her business.
At the time her daughter’s boyfriend was visiting. He bore the brunt of the attack.
Daniels’ daughter recalled that they were sitting on the patio in front of their house when her boyfriend got up to leave.
She said that she accompanied him to the gate and while there she observed two men, one short and the other tall, approaching from a nearby alleyway.
The men walked past but then suddenly turned and with their guns drawn, they ran towards the teenager and her boyfriend.
Daniels’ daughter said that she ran back into the house, leaving her boyfriend to the mercy of the two bandits.
Her brother who has a broken foot, tried desperately to flee also but one of the gunmen pointed his gun at him and ordered him to remain where he was.
Her boyfriend was ordered to lie face down by one of the bandits who demanded whatever valuables he had.
“They asked my boyfriend if he had on any jewellery and he didn’t answer…Then one of them feel his neck to see if he had on a chain, then he push he hand in his pocket and took out his cell phone and $4000,” the teenager recalled.
All the while she was peering through a crease in the wall, hoping desperately that the men would not enter the house to confront her.
But the men suddenly fled the scene through the same alleyway from which they had arrived.
“Shortly after a police patrol passed and we call them and tell them about the robbery, but they ain’t go after the men,” the young woman told this newspaper.
She said that she was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where she made a report but no one there took a statement from her; instead they told her to return the following morning.
Tuesday night’s robbery brought back shocking memories for Faye Daniels, who told this newspaper that it was the second time that the family has had such an experience.
“We got robbed in 2011 and now again…Like this thing won’t done,” Daniels lamented.
Although her children were traumatized by the ordeal, she feels lucky that she was not at home, since she too might have been targeted by the bandits.
Only recently the police had boasted a reduction in serious crimes and it is hoped that recent criminal events are not a sign that it is on the increase.

Albouystown drug dealer may have ordered hit on Soldier

MARCH 31, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

An Albouystown drug dealer may have organized the execution of Army Lance Corporal Kevon Payne, who was gunned down outside his mother’s Sussex Street, Charlestown home around 21:00 hrs on Tuesday.

This is one of several theories investigators are following as they continue to question several persons in connection with the execution-style killing of the 22-year-old man. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that no one has been arrested as yet. He said that investigators will be conducting a thorough investigation.
According to information received, one of Payne’s brothers, Vellone Thorne, was involved in a heated argument with a drug dealer, who is known to the family– this occurred some time last week.
The argument turned physical and the drug dealer later threatened to “finish” Payne’s brother.
Kaieteur News was told that the drug dealer told villagers that he has $10M and was willing to pay “the experts” to take out his enemy because he was too “disrespectful” to him.
There are reports that when Kevon Payne asked for time off from his work on Tuesday after he learnt of the incident involving his brother, Thorne, and the drug dealer. He reportedly went to meet the individual.
“My brother (Kevon) is a peaceful person. He hear that this man said he gone kill our brother and he went and confront he but this man started to behave stupid so my brother (Kevon) told him, if he kill my brother, he will have to live in the sky,” Sharmain Thorne, the dead man’s sister said.
Relatives believed that the well known drug dealer organized the soldier’s death after they talked early Tuesday.
“I think they kill Kevon to get to the other brother (Vellone) because they know that he is a road man and it won’t be easy to kill him,” the sibling stated.
Payne’s stepfather, Rudolph Thorne said that he too had tried to make peace between his son, Vellone and the drug dealer when he learnt of the incident.

“I meet him (drug dealer) and I ask him what happened and he said that my son disrespectful to him and that he got $10M and he gone get rid of my son,” Thorne said.
The man said that his relatives have already provided the police with the names of the shooter and the drug dealer who they claimed arranged the execution-style killing of Payne.
Kevon Payne was reportedly shot at least six times by his killer, who arrived on the scene on a white motorcycle and escaped with an accomplice, following a brief exchange of gunfire with police ranks.
Shakel Wilson, a friend of the dead man was shot in the leg. He is being treated at a private hospital.
Payne’s relatives are claiming that the police too played a part in his death. Amid these reports, the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation.
This newspaper was told that investigators are also testing the weapons of those ranks, who were present at the scene.
In tears, the dead man’s mother, Evette Parris, said that she lost her daughter, Creavone Thorne, almost eight years ago and never received justice.
Thorne’s decomposed body was discovered in November 2008 in a trench at Thomas Lands with the throat slit.
Police had arrested her boyfriend but he was later released.
Meanwhile, members from the Guyana Defence Force visited the grieving family to offer their sympathy.
Among the Army officials was Gary Beaton, Commander of the GDF Coast Guard; welfare officers and Nicholas Corbin, the Force Chaplin.
This is the third execution in the city in recent days. The first was O’Riley Small, 31, who was riddled with bullets just as he entered his Smyth Street home.
The second victim was murder accused Steve Mohamed, who was riddled with bullets and dumped in Le Repentir Cemetery.

He said he hurried to the scene and was greeted by a ransacked store, and saw that one of the side windows, which was outfitted with steel and secured by double padlocks, was removed and the wooden bars ripped out.

Singh explained that the robbers gained entry from the ground floor, and entered the store, which has several sections, including grocery, stationery, pharmacy, car accessories, CDs and DVDs, gift centre and electronics.

The businessman said he rents the place, the lower flat of which houses the store while the top flat is occupied by a private school named Professional Learning College (PLC).

He reported that the police were summoned, and showed up at the scene, but failed to lift any fingerprints from the many showcases in the store.

Singh explained that at approximately 03:00hrs, a neighbour observed a man carrying two bags of rice passing his home, but he thought nothing of it. But when a second man passed with a basket containing boxes of milk, beverages and other things, he become suspicious and called out to his wife to hand him the cutlass, and he began to shout for “Thief!”

He said the man dropped the basket and fled on foot.

Singh said the bandits spent a lot of time in the store, and selected the best of everything. He pointed out that they selected from the many glass cases in the store, thus he was robbed of the largest Cadbury chocolates, colognes, milk, juices and other items.

Singh told this newspaper that the business is family-owned and the members tried to sell everything possible.

The bandits had also gained access to the top flat, which houses the private school, and they took the money that was there from the canteen, and also took time to have a few beverages from the refrigerator.

This is the second robbery to have occurred at the same business place. In the first robbery, the robbers had gained entry to the store after breaking the wall. In this robbery, the men also brought their own tools, which included hammer and chisels, which they left behind.

Singh is, however, thankful that it was not a gunpoint robbery, and his two employees were not hurt.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 64-year-old pensioner, whose body with a wound to the head was discovered around 06:30 hrs yesterday.

Dead: Roger Manikam

Dead: Roger Manikam

The body of Roger Manikam of Lot 237 Section B Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was found on the roadway along the Coldingen Railway Embankment.
Investigators believed that the father of two was killed during a robbery. They are basing their theory on the fact that the man’s pockets were emptied and “turned inside-out.”
There are reports that Manikam was carrying more than $100,000 on him when he met with his tragic death.
At his home yesterday, his daughter, Naline Manikam said that she last saw her father around 20:00 hrs on Saturday before she and her sibling retired to bed.
“I can’t really say what happened but when we got up the morning, we didn’t see him and that was unusual because he would normally be at home around that time. This was around 08:30 (hrs),” the young woman claimed.
She said that she made a few calls to persons nearby as well as family members to find out whether anyone had heard from her father but she got no information.
Suspecting that something was definitely wrong, the young woman said that she went to the Vigilance Police Station to report him missing—at this point she had no idea that a body had been found not far from their home.
“I went to the station and they ask me to describe him and then I come home. When I reach home, they called me and asked if I can go back. When I went, they ask me about his clothes and tell me to describe him and then they say that they found a body matching the description,” the younger Manikam said.
She added that she was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour where she positively identified her father.
Manikam said that she has no idea how her father left home but suggested that he might have left in a car to go somewhere. She could not say where he went.
“He did not know anyone around that area where his body was found and he doesn’t usually go around that area so we don’t know what really happened,” she claimed.
According to the daughter, he had over $100,000 on him at the time of his death. “He doesn’t leave his money at home. He would usually walk with it and the police said that he didn’t have any money or anything else when they found him.”
The daughter too believed that her father was robbed and killed.
“He would usually leave home without telling anyone but he does always come home. He never sleeps out,” the woman said.
Investigations are ongoing.

That’s the story that police are being told by the marketing agent, who detectives detained on Monday night in connection with Manikam’s murder.
Lawmen have also impounded the young man’s car, even as they check the vehicle for blood and other forensic evidence.
Police are said to be already in possession of the axe that was used to kill Manikam, as well as bloodstained sheets and other material that the killers used to clean the victim’s kitchen after murdering him.
These items were recovered yesterday after the ‘transporter’ and his 18-year-old friend took detectives to an area some 300 yards from the spot at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, where they had disposed of the body.
A shopkeeper also told investigators that the two friends had recently bought detergent from her.
Along with the two friends, the slain pensioner’s 18-year-old daughter and stepdaughter, said to be 12, are also in custody.
The older girl, whose boyfriend reportedly did the killing, has also confessed to her involvement in the plot, but Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum indicated that detectives wanted to gather as much evidence as they could before charging the suspects.
According to the young marketing agent, on Saturday night he received a call from his 18-year-old friend, who said that Manikam’s car needed a jump-start. But on arriving at Manikam’s home, the friend took him to the pensioner’s kitchen, where he saw the elderly man lying dead.
The marketing agent said that he then assisted his friend in wrapping the body and placing it in the back seat of his car. They then dumped the body on the Coldingen Railway Embankment.
The young killers had apparently hoped that police would believe that robbers had killed Manikam. The elder girl had repeatedly told detectives and a Kaieteur News reporter that her father always walked with money and was carrying over $100,000 when he was murdered.
She had also said that Manikam would usually leave home without telling anyone.
The teen said she last saw her father alive at around 20:00 hrs on Saturday, just before retiring to bed with her step-sister.
But detectives became suspicious when they revisited the scene on Monday and observed that a length of clothesline at Manikam’s home was similar to the length of cord that the killers had used to tie their victim, after wrapping up the body in plastic.
The repeated suggestions that the victim was carrying “a lot of money” also made investigators suspect that individuals were trying to make them believe that robbers had killed Manikam. They began to focus their attention on two teenage girls and the older girl’s 18-year-old boyfriend. After being subjected to intense questioning, the elder girl eventually confessed.
According to reports, the girls alleged that the pensioner had subjected them to years of emotional abuse, including threatening to put them out. The older girl also reportedly said that her father had taken a large sum of money that was awarded to her.
Last week, the girls and an 18-year-old male friend hatched a plan to kill Manikam.
On Saturday night, the two girls reportedly went into the kitchen and began to make a commotion to lure the pensioner out of his bedroom.
When an angry Manikam eventually headed to the kitchen to berate the girls, the 18-year-old boyfriend of one of the teens chopped the pensioner on the head with an axe.
They then contacted the other male friend, who took the body in a car to the Coldingen Railway Embankment.

Injured and robbed in hospital

By Shirley Thomas

THERE SEEMS to be more questions than answers surrounding the mysterious disappearance of a patient’s clothing, cash and other personal effects from the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), last Tuesday, as the patient was being taken to the main operating theatre for surgery.Thirty-year-old Reagan Lambert of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was injured in a hit-and-run accident at Huntley, Mahaicony around 22:30hrs on Easter Monday night. The vehicle which hit him from behind caused him to suffer a broken right leg and ankle; injuries to his right lower back and rib cage; and his right arm and jaw.
The accident was moments later reported to the police who picked up the injured man and rushed him to the Mahaicony Hospital where he was stabilised, given emergency treatment and transferred by ambulance to the GPHC. The patient was admitted and kept in the holding area for the remainder of the night.
The following day (Tuesday), around 13:30hrs, he recalls, he was approached by a nurse dressed in white uniform, and whom he described in detail told him that he was being prepared for theatre and had to take off his clothes and all personal effects and leave them with her. At that time he was awake and fully conscious. He said the nurse assured him that the items would be safe and that she would return them to him after he was out of the theatre.
The items he said he handed over were: One red jersey; one pair of camoflague trousers; one Nike boots (light blue, trimmed with deep blue); an Acatel cell phone and a wallet containing his identification card and about $5,000in cash.
Lambert said that the following day (Wednesday), he asked one of his sisters who visited him, to go back to A&E and uplift the items. However, the family was shocked when staff at the unit told them that they had no clothing and personal effects for him. The woman said that all they handed over to her was a 4” x 6” photograph of Lambert and two other friends. It was enclosed in a plastic bag of similar size and the staff handing it over claimed that the photograph was found in the patient’s chart.
What the family deems as strange is that the photograph was in Lambert’s pants pocket when he arrived at the hospital and at no time did he take it out. A report was made at the Matron’s Office on Monday, (April 4) and it was learnt that the nurses taking custody of any patient’s personal belongings would first make a log book entry, then have the internal security check and make an entry into the their property book as well, so that the items could be traced and reconciled when needed.
On Monday afternoon another of the man’s sisters again visited the A&E, and made her concerns known to the Internal Security and a female staff in the triage area. The officers were appalled to find that there was no entry for the patient Reagan Lambert in their Property book, neither was there any in the nurses’ log book.
Out of concern, the security at the triage room took a decision to report the matter to the base office in the hospital compound. The officer in charge immediately caused a search to be mounted. And what did that search yield? One side of the patient’s Nike boots in a toilet in the Emergency room. How did the boots get there? “Your guess is as good as mine,” the patient’s disappointed sister muttered.
The woman was so distraught she could not even take the one side boot, but walked away from the scene.
Meanwhile, the patient was expected to be transferred to the Mahaicony Hospital on Tuesday, but would now have to leave without the items he had with him when he arrived.
The family is asking the administration of the A&E Unit, now that they have a detailed description of the woman who collected the items from the patient, to check their register to determine just who, suiting that description, might have been on duty around 13:30hrs on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 22.
Considering this to be an indictment on the good name of the institution, the family is suggesting that the authorities deal condignly with whoever might be found responsible for the disappearance of the patient’s items.

Burnt to death – Renowned woman rice farmer, husband perish after bandits set house alight

By Alva Solomon

AN EAST BANK Essequibo woman who was recognized as a trail blazer in the rice industry was burnt to death, along with her husband, on Sunday night in a fire which was allegedly set by bandits who had attacked their home.Dead is Bibi Jamila Munir, 69, and her husband Mohammed Munir, called Dak, 75, Lot 17, Good Hope Public Road, East Bank Essequibo. The couple was known to have been involved in rice farming for decades. They were the parents of five (5) children, including three adopted children, most of whom reside overseas.

The gutted remains of the Munirs’ home

The gutted remains of the Munirs’ home

According to a police release, the charred remains of the Munirs were found among the debris after the fire was extinguished.

According to reports, the Munirs were attacked by intruders at about 23:00hrs on Sunday. The bandits gained entry through the back of the couple’s home, relatives noted. The house is heavily grilled, and persons at the scene told this newspaper that the intruders set the house ablaze after the Munirs had locked themselves in a back room.

The Munirs were heard screaming for help, and soon after gunshots rang out in the house. Persons in the area tried desperately to gain entry to the burning house, but to no avail.

Police investigators were at the scene on Monday morning, while scores of relatives and friends gathered outside the gutted house.
According to a relative, on Sunday night, he was at home — a few doors away — when he was told that bandits had attacked the elderly couple. He said that when he arrived at the scene, the elderly woman was screaming for help while the house was engulfed in flames.

“She call out and said we must move the vehicles from underneath the house,” he said. He said that a large quantity of paddy which was stored in a room beneath the premises was destroyed by the fire.

The man noted that the woman had telephoned several persons while she and her husband had been under attack, including a popular West Demerara businessman who was reportedly the last person the woman had spoken to.

Persons at the scene noted that the room in which the couple met their demise is connected to adjoining bedrooms by two doors, and as such, they could not understand why the couple could not escape the blaze.

“Me try to go in, but the smoke and the flames was too much,” a relative noted. The man said that the couple rarely kept money on the premises, even though the persons they employed would have been paid over the weekend.

The Munirs were expected to harvest approximately 50 acres of rice in the coming weeks.
They are well known on the West Coast of Demerara, as well as in the Muslim community. Persons in the area noted that the Munirs had reportedly donated selflessly to the Good Hope Masjid.

General Secretary of the Rice Producers Association (RPA), Dharamkumar Seeraj, told the Guyana Chronicle that the couple’s death came as a shock to the rice farming fraternity. He said the two people were always seen together at rice forums.

In 2004, former Minister of Agriculture, the late Satyadeow “Sash” Sawh, had recognized Mrs Munir’s work in the rice industry and on the EBE by presenting her with the Award of the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB).

In 2007, the RPA had paid tribute to Mrs Munir when the body acknowledged her contribution as a businesswoman to the rice industry by featuring her in the quarterly edition of the magazine, “The Farmer”.

Seeraj said that he knew Mrs Munir since 1989, when he joined the rice industry, and according to him, the woman was actively involved in the development of rice at the time. Being a male-dominated industry, he said, the woman was always involved in managing the affairs of her rice fields.

He said she had also played a key role in the toll milling infrastructure which was set up at Vergenoegen on the EBE. “She would go there and overlook the operations,” Seeraj said.

He said Mrs Munir was also very involved in the functions of the RPA. “It’s a very big shock; Mrs Munir was full of life, always working,” Seeraj said, lamenting the brutal manner in which the Munirs had met their demise.

Police investigations in the matter are ongoing.

Businessman killed in city ambush

By Rabindra Rooplall

A BOTCHED robbery yesterday claimed the life of young Wakenaam businessman Mahendra Persaud, called ‘Amar’, of Good Success, Wakenaam, and left a bandit injured on the busy roadway at Robb and Alexander Streets in the Bourda ward of Georgetown.

The 26-year-old dead businessman was on one of his regular trips to the city to buy stocks for the family’s business on the Essequibo Island. This newspaper understands that the family operates a general store which is well known on the island. A resident from Wakenaan revealed that Persaud got married only last month.

Police are now on the hunt for two young men who were on a CG motorcycle and attempted to rob the young man, who had just exited a Canter truck and was making his way to a store. During the attempted robbery, Persaud was shot to the chest, and he slumped on the roadway. A car which was chasing the gunman ran over his body, exacerbating his already grave injuries.

The young man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police later confirmed that a man who was seen attempting to change the number plate of the vehicle that had run over Persaud has been arrested. The driver of the vehicle has however not yet been arrested, but the vehicle has been detained by the police.

The scene was one of chaos as the sound of the gunshots had many scampering to safety whlst the gunman ran up the street, firing shots wildly to clear his path.
He subsequently jumped on a waiting motorcycle and made good his escape.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that an armed public spirited citizen also discharged multiple rounds at the bandit, hitting him in the fusilade.

Initial investigations indicate that the businessman may have been followed by the bandits to the location. Owen Paton, an employee who was with Persaud at the time, related what transpired when the vehicle they were in stopped at a paint store.

“We just stopped because we was to drop off a bucket paint for them to mix. As soon as he [Persaud] jump out the canter and throw his bag on his back is duh: the man roll up and try to grabble he bag, but they didn’t get it,” Paton told this newspaper.

He explained that Persaud would visit Georgetown often to purchase goods to be shipped to Wakenaam. Paton said he has been working with the businessman for the past five years.

Meanwhile, a police report has noted that at approximately 10:45hrs, Persaud was with his driver in a vehicle at Alexander and Regent Streets, Georgetown when he was attacked by a man armed with a gun, who demanded a bag with money that he had in his possession as he exited the vehicle. He put up a resistance and a struggle ensued, during which he was shot.

on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, minutes after he was picked up from the roadway.
The police in a statement yesterday said that about 10:45hrs, Persaud was with his driver in a vehicle when he was attacked by a man armed with a firearm. The man demanded a bag with money that Persaud had in his possession.
According to the police, Persaud put up resistance and a struggle ensued during which he was shot to the neck. He subsequently fell on the roadway and in the process, was run over by motor vehicle, PVV 3157.
This newspaper was told by eyewitnesses that a licenced firearm holder who was in proximity, exchanged gunshots with the gunman, who subsequently managed to escape on a waiting Honda CG motorcycle ridden by an accomplice. It is believed that the bandit was shot in the process and fled leaving the bag with cash behind.
Investigators are convinced that Persaud was trailed by the bandit and his accomplice, who waited for the right opportunity to strike.
A police source, informed this publication that Persaud had previously visited two stores and was about to visit a third when he was confronted by the bandit. He had in his possession approximately $700,000, the source revealed.
The bag with the money was reportedly recovered by the police.
The police, after examining CCTV footage, said that they were able to identify the bandit and are making every effort to have him arrested.
Meanwhile, the driver of the car that ran over Persaud, took him to the hospital and later vanished, leaving the vehicle in the hospital compound. It was reported that he subsequently sent another man along with a mechanic to switch the licence plates on the vehicle. The two men were caught in the act and were arrested.
While they were handcuffed and sat at the back of a police pickup, one of them told media operatives that he was unaware of the incident. He continued that he was just parked next to the mechanic when the police approached him and said that he was involved in the death of someone.
Persaud’s aunt, who was at the hospital, told media operatives that her nephew, who got married just over a month ago, would usually come to the city to buy goods to take back to the island where he and her father ran a general store together. She stated that there were several attempts made in the past, but never to this extent.
When this publication contacted Persaud’s wife Parvena by telephone yesterday, she recalled that her husband left the Essequibo island at around 07:00 hrs for his usual trip to the city to purchase stocks for his business.
With him was his driver and trusted friend. The woman said that sometime around 11:00 hrs she received a telephone call, informing her that her husband was shot. She was advised to prepare herself to travel to the Georgetown Hospital where they had taken her husband.
But as she was about to leave her house she received the dreaded call that her husband had succumbed and she should no longer travel.

Victorine Narine and her two daughters, aged 26 and 18, along with her mother, were bound and placed to lie on the floor, while the robbers, armed with two handguns and a cutlass, ransacked their home.
The elder daughter was also struck in the face with a handgun.
The intruders, who also feasted on snacks and beverages, eventually escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery.
Mrs. Narine’s husband, who is a Kaieteur News employee, was not at home when the attack occurred.
The robbers gained entry by prising out a grill from a window in the bottom flat of the two-storey property.
Victorine Narine said she was asleep in her bedroom when she was awakened by her eldest daughter’s screams. Mrs. Narine said that she immediately realised that intruders were in the house.
“I came out (of the bedroom) hollering, because I knew what had happened,” she said.
On running into the hallway, she was confronted by a masked man with a cutlass. Two other men with handguns held her eldest daughter and mother. They also brought the 18-year-old daughter from her bedroom.

Simone Hackett (inset) Undertakers remove the body in the presence of curious onlookers.

23-year-old Simone Hackett’s partially decomposed body was yesterday discovered in a trench parallel to the University of Guyana Road, at Fourth Field, Cummings Lodge.
The discovery was a grim confirmation of her relatives’ worst fears, after the woman went missing on Saturday night.
Hackett’s body was found by two schoolboys who were passing by the area and were overwhelmed by a putrid stench. Curiosity got the better of them and upon checking the corner of the trench they made the gruesome discovery.
Her body bore marks of violence, indicating a clear case of foul play.
According to reports, Hackett’s throat was slit and there were what appeared to be two stab wounds to the back and neck.
She was clad in the same outfit she had left home with and her jewellery was intact, leading relatives to speculate even more that robbery was not the motive, but that it was cold-blooded murder.
Commander of the police ‘C’ Division Marlon Chapman told this newspaper that the case is being treated strictly as a murder.
It is suspected that Hackett was killed elsewhere and her killer(s) dumped the body in the location that it was discovered.
Investigators are now trying to locate one of the dead woman’s male former acquaintances, in the hope of obtaining some vital information surrounding her death.
Kaieteur News had reported that the now dead Hackett was missing since Saturday night. She had left her ‘C’ Field, Sophia home between 20:00 and 20:30 hrs to collect a package sent from Mahdia by her “child-father”. According to the woman’s mother, she had received a phone call from her “child-father” at around 18:00h, instructing her to meet with one “Dexter”, an individual who was supposedly bringing the package from Mahdia.

The woman’s distraught stepmother collapsed at the scene and had to be revived.

The woman’s distraught stepmother collapsed at the scene and had to be revived.

Relatives told Kaieteur News that she left to meet “Dexter” at the Mahdia Bus Park, but the meeting place changed and instead she went to the Railway Embankment at UG Road. They last heard from her while she was waiting there.
Hackett’s mother had said that she last received a call from her daughter at 22:10 hrs, but her daughter wasn’t saying anything and she heard background noises as though she was in a moving vehicle.
Hours later after she did not return home, relatives tried calling her cell phone continually, but kept getting voicemail.
Early Sunday morning, relatives went to the Turkeyen Police Station and lodged a report. They said that the Officer in charge after taking their report immediately sent out an all station message.
The search continued until yesterday when the discovery was made.
Upon arrival at the scene where the body was found, family members became hysterical and wails of anger filled the air.
Some of the dead woman’s relatives could be heard saying, “Is he do it! He gon pay for this!” These statements were allegedly in reference to the father of the dead woman’s toddler son. The woman’s stepmother collapsed at the scene and had to be revived; another relative made a desperate attempt to get to the body and had to be restrained by a police rank.
Kaieteur News understands that as recently as one week ago, Hackett’s “child-father”, who is reportedly in Mahdia, had issued threats of killing her over custody of their son who recently turned three years old.
Relatives of the murdered woman also stated the man’s mother and sister knew of the threats, and they were also alleged to have issued threats to Hackett.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators at Turkeyen had contacted their counterparts at Mahdia on Sunday, with a view to locating Hackett’s child father, after she went missing.
According to reports, the police at Mahdia quickly detained the man and questioned him, but he reportedly denied knowing about her whereabouts.
He reportedly gave all assurances that he wouldn’t do anything to harm Simone Hackett, claiming that the last contact he had with her was at 18:00 hrs on Saturday, and that the bearer of the package was a friend he knew from a previous job in the gold mines.
He stated that the friend, “Dexter”, hails from Pomeroon, Essequibo, and that after he called Hackett to pick up the package, he tried calling “Dexter”, but the individual’s cell phone was turned off.
Police subsequently released him, as Hackett had not been officially missing for more than 72 hours.
The now dead woman was scheduled to be the maid of honour at her sister’s wedding on Sunday. The wedding went on nevertheless, but under a cloud of despair and uncertainty.
Yesterday Hackett’s distraught father Gerald Hackett lamented the fact that he had just “given away” one of his daughters and now he will be burying another.
“I care fuh me children. I always say let they bury me before I bury them. Was a wedding fuss, is a dead now,” he cried.
He too believes that his daughter’s child-father could shed some light on how she died.
“Is he caused her to go out to pick up the package, so I think the police need to look at the child-father; that’s my take on it,” Gerald Hackett told members of the media.

Three held for cocaine in plywood

A LARGE quantity of cocaine was intercepted yesterday when members of the drug enforcement arm of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) unearthed the substance during the examination of a consignment of plywood destined for the United States. In a statement, the GRA said that members of its Drug Enforcement and Goods Examination Units along with the Port Control Unit (PCU) were in the process of examining a consignment of 5/8 inch plywood destined for Florida in the United States of America (USA), when upon closer examination anomalies were detected within the consignment. Further examination and testing revealed a quantity of cocaine concealed between the approximately 320 sheets of plywood.
As such, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were informed and officials of both agencies arrived on the scene to provide support and carry out further investigations. The plywood’s consignee was listed as a business located on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway with the consignment’s prospective recipient being a hardware establishment in Florida. GRA officials had become even more suspicious of the contents of the consignment based on the suspicious behaviour displayed by the consignee’s representatives during the examination process. Three persons have since been detained as the investigation continues.

‘Child father’ confesses to ‘Maid of Honour’ killing

– murder stemmed from jealousy, custody fight
He reportedly plotted the killing carefully, even travelling back to the interior to give himself an alibi, but this was not enough to stop detectives from implicating  Clevon Hamilton to the brutal murder of his reputed wife, Simone Hackett.

Prime suspect: Clevon Hamilton

Police yesterday revealed that Hamilton, who was detained on Wednesday at Mahdia, has admitted to slitting Hamilton’s throat and dumping her remains in a trench at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara on Saturday night.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect, known as ‘Quarter’, has said that the killing stemmed from jealousy and because of Hackett’s refusal to give him custody of their son.
Police yesterday escorted the alleged killer back to the scene, where he pointed out the area where the murder occurred.
Detectives have taken statements from a bus driver and conductor, who had transported the suspect from Mahdia to Georgetown on Saturday.
“We also have phone records, which we will be using against him to further strengthen our case,” Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said. Police are also seeking to contact a taxi driver who took Hamilton to and from the East Coast of Demerara.
Simone Hackett’s fate was sealed on Saturday, when she allegedly received a call from Hamilton, who said he was sending out a package, containing cash and gold, from Mahdia.
Hamilton allegedly instructed her to collect the ‘package’ from an associate of his called ‘Dexter.’
Relatives told Kaieteur News that she left to meet “Dexter” at the Mahdia Bus Park, but the meeting place changed and instead she went to the Railway Embankment at UG Road. They last heard from her while she was waiting there.
During his interrogation yesterday, Hamilton reportedly told detectives that he travelled out of Mahdia

by bus on Saturday morning. He then stayed at a hotel and when night fell, he contacted a taxi driver, who took him to Cummings Lodge. After asking the driver to wait, Hamilton, who had a cutlass in a haversack, then met Simone Hackett.
The suspect allegedly said that the two had a heated row over custody of their son. He was also jealous and angry over some of the things she was doing, and “couldn’t take it any longer.”
The suspect allegedly stated that he sneaked up behind his ‘child mother,’ then choked his victim before inflicting the fatal wounds.
Leaving the murder weapon near the body, Hamilton allegedly then returned to Georgetown in the same taxi. He then returned to Mahdia.
Hackett’s mother had said that she last received a call from her daughter at 22:10 hrs, but her daughter wasn’t saying anything and she heard background noises as though the daughter was in a moving vehicle.
Relatives tried calling her cell phone continually, but kept getting voicemail.
They were particularly concerned, since she was scheduled to be the Maid of Honour at her sister’s wedding on Sunday. It was also the day that her son was celebrating his third birthday.
The relatives managed to contact Clevon Hamilton in the interior, and they questioned him about Hackett’s whereabouts.
Hamilton then went to the Mahdia Police Station where he professed innocence about Hackett’s fate. He was released after providing the police with a statement.
On Tuesday, two boys on their way to school spotted Hackett’s partially decomposed body in a trench at Fourth Field Cummings Lodge. Her throat was slit and she had been stabbed three times to the back and neck. She was clad in the same outfit she had left home with and her jewellery was intact. Police retrieved a black-handled cutlass from near the body.
On Wednesday, police apprehended Hamilton at Mahdia and escorted him back to Georgetown.
Relatives had alleged that a week prior to her death, Simone Hackett had received threats to her life over the continuing child custody dispute.
Police are to seek legal advice on the case today.

Drug addict kills 75-yr-old mom

APRIL 22, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Residents of Good Faith, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, are trying to come to grips with the gruesome murder last night of a 75-year-old woman, allegedly by her 53-year-old son.
Cecelia Madray was discovered lying on her blood-covered floor with a wound to the head at around 20:00 hours, by members of the area’s Community Policing Group (CPG). Her son, who is said to be a drug addict, was also in the house and he was promptly taken into custody.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the CPG members were contacted after neighbours heard a commotion in Madray’s house.
When the CPG members went to the house and called out for Madray’s son, they got no answer.
They were left with no other alternative but to break the door to get in. Once in, they made the shocking discovery of the elderly woman lying on the floor covered by a mosquito net.
Kaieteur News understands that when questioned, the dead woman’s son told the CPG members that she fell on the steps on Tuesday. However, the CPG members found no trace of blood on the stairs to support the man’s story. They observed that the woman’s body was still a bit fresh.
While news of Madray’s death, allegedly at the hands of her son, was shocking, it came as no surprise to many, since she had suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse.
According to a police source, Madray’s son was arrested and spent four days in the Mahaicony Police Station lock-ups after it was alleged that he had raped his mother. However, the source said that the woman refused to give the police a statement so that he could be charged and placed before the court.

Six gunmen early yesterday stormed the home of a popular rice farmer/miller at Toevlugt, West Bank Demerara. At the end of an almost hour-long ordeal, the masked invaders, who were armed with three guns and three knives, escaped on foot with six laptops, eight cell phones, gold, diamonds, televisions, medical instruments and two firearms.
The robbery occurred around 02:00 hrs and the bandits used the heavy rain to their advantage as they broke one of the windows at the home and then ripped open the grillwork.
The victim, Deo Rupee said that the ordeal has left him and his family traumatized, but he is thankful that the men made no attempt to harm anyone.
“When I came out of my room, they greeted me with guns and knives. The first thing they said to me was that they wanted my guns and I told them that I will give them everything, but they can’t hurt anyone,” Rupee said.
He explained that he gave the men his two weapons and then called out for his children and parents one at a time from their rooms.
“They put us in the master bedroom and one of them with a gun was in the door. They were searching the house. They took everything that is valuable,” the man said.
The rice farmer said that the men took their time and thoroughly searched the property. “They tumbled all the rooms and everywhere.”
Rupee said where he is living; he does not have any neighbours.
“I told them (the bandits) from the start that I will cooperate, I even told them that I had money in my pants pocket,” the man said.
“These men had time. They were even drinking coconut water and milk while searching,” the rice farmer said. He added that the men locked their maid’s door from outside so that if she heard any strange sounds, the woman wouldn’t be able to investigate.
The woman is residing in a structure adjacent to Rupee’s home.
The rice farmer’s house does not have surveillance cameras, but the man is in the process of setting up such facilties.
According to the businessman, he has already supplied the names of two persons to the police whom he suspects were a part of the robbery.
Investigations are ongoing.

Man found dead two days after beaten for ‘hustling’ neighbour’s daughter

April 23, 2016 | By | Filed Under News

The decomposed body of a 52-year-old man was fished out of a trench at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) yesterday, two days after he was beaten for “hustling” a neighbour’s daughter.

Dead: Doodnauth Hariprasad

Dead: Doodnauth Hariprasad

The dead man has been identified as Doodnauth Hariprasad, a father of five of Lot 45 Tuschen, West Coast Demerara (WCD). Hariprasad’s bloated body was found early yesterday by passersby.
A post mortem examination performed on the remains of the 52-year-old man revealed that he died from multiple injuries.
One of Hariprasad’s neighbours and his son were subsequently arrested after police received reports that the two persons were seen beating the victim on Wednesday after he (Hariprasad) had “hustled” the neighbour’s daughter. That was the last time he was seen alive.
The dead man’s sister, Rosaline Bhim, said that her brother lived in Tuschen with their father. He would go at her home to collect food every morning.
According to the woman, Hariprasad went to her home early Wednesday to collect food. That was the last time she heard from him.
“On Thursday morning, I waited on him to come and collect the food but he didn’t come so I took a bus and I went in Tuschen. I ask my father what happened to (my brother) and he too said that he doesn’t know,” the woman said.
She further added that her father had informed her that the 52-year-old man was involved in an argument with a neighbour and that he was beaten by the neighbour and his son. “(Her father) said that was the last time he saw (Hariprasad),” the woman added.
Bhim stated that yesterday morning she waited on her sibling, thinking that he would show up to collect food for himself and their father but he failed to show up again.
“He does normally come around 06:00 (hrs) in the morning and when he didn’t show up, I suspect that something was wrong so I took a bus again and I went to their home. While going, I hear they found a body at Zeelugt,” the woman said.
She explained that she asked someone to drop the food for her father and she went to the scene where the body was found. According to the woman, the body was submerged in the trench.
“When they pulled him out, I recognized the pants because he does wear my father pants. And then I identified him. They took him to the parlour and the PM showed that he was murdered,” the woman claimed.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s estranged wife, Annette Sukra, said that they separated 16 years ago because of his drinking habits.
“When he drink, he could really get you angry and he drinks a lot so maybe he said something to the girl and that’s why he was beaten,” Sukra said.

Alexander Street shooting…Car that ran over victim was part of robbery plot – Police Source

Mahendra Persaud

Mahendra Persaud

This was revealed by a police source yesterday who continued that based on the CCTV footage that was examined; the vehicle was seen trailing the businessman’s Canter along a particular route.
This, the source pointed out, was a clear indication that the car was part of surveillance. There was also a motorcycle involved in the plan. However, the pillion rider who allegedly did the shooting along with his accomplice, is yet to be arrested.
According to reports, Persaud who resided at Lot 22 Good Success, was shot some time around 10:45hrs on Tuesday morning by a lone gunman as he exited his Canter.
A struggle ensued resulting in Persaud receiving a single shot to the neck.
Another businessman, who was nearby, returned fire on the gunman who then fled the scene empty-handed with his accomplice on a motorcycle.
As Persaud fell to the ground, he was subsequently run over by the car. It was reported that the driver then put Persaud into the car and proceeded to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the car later vanished, leaving the vehicle in the hospital compound.
It was reported that he subsequently sent another man along with a mechanic to change the licence plates on the vehicle. The two men were caught in the act and were arrested.

This looks like a setup. Nothing happens in Guyana by accident.

Drug addict confesses to killing mother

A 53-year-old drug addict who was arrested for the murder of his mother, Celelia Madray, 75, of Good Faith, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara has since confessed to the heinous crime during interrogation on Friday.
The pensioner was on Thursday evening found lying in a pool of blood with a gash to her head and her body covered with a mosquito net. The woman was reportedly heard screaming on Monday evening by residents and was not seen since.
This led to members of the community to conclude that something was amiss and as such, they contacted the policing group in the area.
As members of the Community Policing Group went to enquire, several calls for the woman went unanswered; hence, they were forced to break the door to gain entry into the house. It was then they found the woman lying on the ground in a motionless state.
Her son, who is a drug addict, was at home at the time of the discovery and was taken into Police custody. However, the head of the Criminal Investigations Department told Guyana Times that during the murder suspect’s interrogation, he told ranks that he “smoke up” on Monday then went home.
He added that while at home and not in his right senses, he got into an argument with the now dead woman during which he picked up a chair and dealt the woman one blow to the head. The elderly woman, he told investigations, fell to the ground but he refused to assist or call for assistance, despite the woman crying for help.
Although the woman sustained the injury to the head, she was still alive but took her last breathe on Thursday evening, moments before the CPG members arrived at the house.
Meanwhile, this publication understands that the woman was frequently physically abused by her son. From reports received, he was previous arrested for allegedly raping the now dead woman who at that time did not want to pursue the matter and refused to give the Police a statement.
After the woman refused to give the statement, he was released but continued assaulting her. Residents in the neighbourhood noted that they were not too surprised at the manner in which the woman met her demise. Some accused her of “protecting” him whenever he did something wrong.
The man is expected to make his court appearance at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Ex-boyfriend charged for maid-of-honour murder after confession

Ex-boyfriend charged for maid-of-honour murder after confession

The 30-year-old ex-boyfriend of the Sophia woman who was found murdered in a Cummings Lodge trench has been charged for the woman’s murder.

The man, Clevaughn Hamilton, called ‘Quarters,’ appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court on Friday and was not required to plea to the indictable charge that he murdered 24-year-old Simone Hackett and dumped her body in the Cummings Lodge trench.

The woman died from multiple stab and chop wounds about her body.

According to the Prosecution’s case, the ex-boyfriend, who is also the father of the woman’s 2-year-old child, lured the woman from her Sophia home on the eve of her sister’s wedding, after telling her that he had sent a package for their son with a man named “Dexter”.

The young woman should have been the maid-of-honour at her sister’s wedding last Sunday but vanished after leaving the home. Her body was found on Tuesday morning.

The Police Prosecutor, David Goodridge, told the Court, that instead, the woman was met by her jealous former lover and brutally stabbed and chopped about her body and later dumped into the trench.

Police investigators zeroed in on the former boyfriend after phone records showed that his number called the woman’s number several times leading up to her death and while he claimed that he was in Mahdia, his cellphone was locked in to mobile towers in Georgetown and the East Coast of Demerara.

Family members of the dead woman berated the murder accused as a “coward” as he made his way in and out of the courtroom. They also lashed out at his family members for attempting to  cover up for him following the brutal murder.

Meanwhile, Police investigators are searching for another man, who they suspect, may have aided Hamilton after the murder.

Investigators have found the car that they believe was used to transport the woman’s dead body to the dumping spot. The car was found in Mahdia and according to Police sources, there were several visible blood stains on the inside of the car.

Police investigators believe that after murdering the woman and dumping her body, Hamilton travelled back to Mahdia in an effort to create an alibi that he was there and not in Georgetown.

2008 cold case solved…‘Hit man’ killed Essequibo businessman on relative’s orders

April 26, 2016 | By | Filed Under News

-was promised $6M, house and land, but only paid $5,000

“Your relative send me to kill you…”
Those were the last words that Essequibo businessman Habiboodean reportedly heard on February 15, 2008,

Murdered: Habiboodean, 77

Murdered: Habiboodean, 77

before a ‘hit-man’ brutally ended his life on the orders of a disgruntled woman who had coveted the old man’s assets.
Detectives had those chilling words repeated to them yesterday, while listening to the confession of a 28-year-old Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo resident, who allegedly committed the deed on a promise that he would receive “$6M, a house and land” to kill Habiboodean.
But the plotters reportedly only gave him $5,000 and told him to ‘f—k off’ when he asked for the rest of his payment.
Habiboodean, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, died at a hospital after being badly beaten in his home on February 15, 2008. Relatives had said that the killers took nothing.
Police had charged the victim’s former employee, Terry Lewton, 38, of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, and Bibi Nazeela Habiboodean, now 50, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, for Mr. Habiboodean’s murder, but those charges were discharged due to insufficient evidence.
But in a stroke of good fortune, police last week detained 28-year-old Linden Lewis, called ‘Bullet,’ and four others, for the murder of Mohamed Munir, 75, and his wife Bibi Jamila Munir, 69, who were burnt to death in their Good Hope, East bank Essequibo home.
It was while he was in custody that investigators learned that he might have more than a passing knowledge of Habiboodean’s death.
Police said that while being interrogated on that case yesterday, Lewis admitted to killing Habiboodeen, while complaining that he had never received full payment for the job.
According to the suspect’s claims, it all began sometime in 2008, when a female relative of the elderly businessman complained that other relatives of Habiboodeen had received properties and other assets, while she had received nothing.
The relative reportedly stated that she wanted the old man’s fuel station, cash he had in a bank, and assets he had in Georgetown.
She reportedly then hired Lewis to kill Mr. Habiboodeen.
Five individuals, including Lewis, reportedly sat down at a  Vergenoegen, hideout, East Bank Essequibo, to plan the old man’s death.
Lewis said that the plotters promised to pay him $6M, and provide him with “a house and land.”
On February 15, 2008, the relative reportedly helped Lewis to gain access to Mr. Habiboodeen’s house.
When the ‘hit-man’ entered, the elderly businessman’s house he was sitting in a chair.
“What you doing here?” Mr. Habiboodeen reportedly asked the intruder.
Lewis reportedly replied: “—— (name given) send me to kill you.” He then reportedly struck the 76-year-old repeatedly. Mr. Habiboodeen later succumbed in a hospital.
But Lewis said that instead of giving him the “$6M, house and land” they had promised, the plotters gave him $5,000 “to go into the bush.”
Lewis reportedly fled to the interior, where he remained for two years. It was during this time that police arrested and charged the victim’s former employee, Terry Lewton, and Bibi Nazeela Habiboodean for murder. They were subsequently discharged.
When Lewis returned from the interior in 2010, he approached the plotters and was told that the case had been “dismissed.”
But when the ‘hit man’ asked for his “$6M, house and land,” one of the plotters reportedly told him that all the money had been spent on lawyers. The plotter reportedly then told the ‘hit-man’ to ‘f—off.’
Lewis said that he did not pursue the matter.
Police indicated yesterday that they will expand their investigation this week.

Long run ends …man confesses to 2012 killing of mother, sons

By Rabindra Rooplall

ALMOST four years after a 41-year-old businesswoman and her two young sons were murdered, a suspect has been apprehended by police over the weekend, and has confessed to committing the gruesome act.

Jadon Persaud

Jadon Persaud

Identified as a resident of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD), the man was once neighbour to the now dead woman.

Mark Jetto points to where the stale blood stains are in the bedroom where his relatives met their demise

In 2012, Jennifer Persaud, the owner of a liquor store and bar at Lot 67, Anna Catherina, WCD, and her sons Afridi Bacchus, six, and Jadon Persaud, 18 months, were discovered dead in their home.
She was a mother of six and her eldest daughter is now 25 years old.
Post-mortem examinations revealed that the woman was stabbed about her upper chest, lower neck, and upper arms about 10 times. Her six-year-old son’s throat was slashed and his windpipe was severed, while the baby was stabbed to the left shoulder and the carotid artery was severed.
It is believed that a knife of long blade was used in the attack.

Investigators disclosed that the suspect was apprehended after his reputed wife visited the police station to make a domestic violence report against him. After making the report, she also expressed fear for her life, citing the fact that her lover had previously committed murder.

Having sparked the interest of the police during further questioning, she hinted that the detectives should interrogate him about the murder of a businesswoman and her two children that occurred in Anna Catherina.
Police acted on the information and apprehended the suspect, who, after being confronted with the allegation, eventually gave a detailed statement and tour of the home, explaining the sequence of events that led to the murder.

RELIEVED
In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, the dead woman’s first cousin, Mark Jetto, who now controls the property, related that he is finally relieved to have some closure over the entire affair.

He expressed his desire for overdue justice for his murdered cousin, with whom he had had a sisterly relationship. Jetto was present when the police brought the suspect to the home to explain his actions leading up to the murder. He said the suspect was once Jennifer Persaud’s neighbour, and on the fatal night of Friday, September 21, 2012, he jumped the fence, entered her property and business premises from the rear entrance through a wooden back door that was forced open.
The suspect then made his way into the business premises, where he broke into a money container inside a room on the lower flat. He then ventured to the upper flat through an inside staircase.

“When the police bring this man upstairs and the inspector ask he is which room he killed the woman and children in, the man pointed to the room. Meh start to scream, “In here bai!” is like ah lose my senses,” Jetto explained.

Jennifer Persaud

Jennifer Persaud

NEVER TAMPERED
Jetto, who has had the property under his control since his cousin’s death, had never tampered with the crime scene, leaving everything in the upper flat as they were since the murder occurred almost four years ago.
At the grisly scene, Jetto pointed to the blood-stained floor in the bedroom almost in tears. “Meh just come here one year now, nobody did anything to the place other than pigeons living inside, and I reopened a business.”
NOT ENOUGH
Reflecting what the suspect told the police, Jetto said: “He tell the police he come to take some money from downstairs and didn’t come fuh kill she. After he take the money from the box downstairs, it was too little money, so he decided to come up upstairs to see if he could get more money.”

Jetto continued: “After he come upstairs now and he pass Jennifer room, she jump up and she holler for he. He tell the police that he run to she and start stabbing she. She little son (Afridi Bacchus) wake up and scramble he foot, and he look down at the boy and slit his throat. She then fall back and reached onto the bed where her baby son was. He continued to attack her on the bed, stabbing wildly. This caused her baby who was on the bed to be stabbed. All three died that night.”

The relative further said he had loaned Jennifer Persaud a substantial amount of cash to construct the home and business, and the money was on the bed at the time of the killing. Jetto said the suspect, after fleeing the crime scene with the cash, decided to party lavishly.

He said at first he had suspected the stepfather of the children as the one who had committed the crime. “I had to apologise to the man because it was not him.”

Jetto described the suspect as a “useless drug user”. Expressing a sigh of relief, Jetto said he had almost given up on the case, thinking that the murder would be one of the many unsolved cases in Guyana.

“Now I will clean up the place, since the murderer will face justice before the court.”

Why Jagdeo & Rohee
could not solve these murders

The prime suspect in the triple homicide had been Persaud’s 23-year-old partner and the father of her youngest child. He, along with a relative of his, had been taken into custody but were both subsequently released due to insufficient evidence.

Bandit killed by own weapon

By Navendra Seoraj

A YARROWKABRA, Soesdyke-Linden Highway businessman was able to save his entire family from the negative effects of a bandit attack on his home on Sunday evening.Explaining the horrific incident to the Guyana Chronicle, the businessman said the ordeal began at about 20:00 hrs that evening, when he exited his bathroom and saw his family, whom he had left outside on the veranda, running back into the house.

According to him, it appeared as if they were being chased by someone who had subsequently fallen after tripping over a chair. “The man ran behind my family and fell over a chair. After that, we got into a scuffle, and what appeared to be a gun fell out of his hand,” the businessman said.

In shock, he said, he reached for the gun, and in an act of self-defence, released just about three rounds at the bandit, hitting him and reportedly killing him on the spot.

Seven children, his wife, brother and another relative were in the house, and they were all left traumatized, given that this was the first time they had experienced something like this.

Asked how many people he believes had carried out the attack, the businessman said that to his knowledge, and based on what he had seen, the man he had shot had at least one accomplice lurking outside of the home. However, a relative who had seen the robbers said there were at least six of them.

After their colleague was shot, the robbers made good their escape.

The businessman has expressed fear for the safety of his family, since this was the first time an incident of this nature had occurred. His fear is exacerbated by the fact that he has resided in the area for almost 15 years.
He has had to send away his children because of fear that the bandits might make another attempt to rob his family.

Members of the small community are seemingly in a state of shock because, according to some of them, incidents like these rarely happen in the area.
A police report has said the dead bandit has been identified as 32-year-old Raphael Armstrong, known as “Scar”, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara.

The police explained that a scuffle ensued between the shopkeeper and Raphael Armstrong, during which Armstrong’s firearm fell to the ground. The shopkeeper retrieved the weapon and shot Armstrong to his body, while his accomplice fled.

Armstrong was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, and the unlicensed firearm has been handed over to the police, even as investigations are being conducted.

Ex-cop survives execution attempt

By Svetlana Marshall

FORMER Guyana Police Force rank Donald McKenzie, of Stanley Place, Kitty, Georgetown, is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, nursing a gunshot wound to his right hand which he sustained after he was shot in the vicinity of William Street, Kitty on Monday following a failed execution attempt.Reports are that the 22-year-old, known also as “Denmar”, reportedly used his hand to bar the bullets from hitting his face.

A police statement said McKenzie was walking along William Street at about 08:30 hrs when two men on a motorcycle drove up, and the pillion rider discharged several rounds at him, hitting his right hand. The police said McKenzie and the two men were reportedly previously involved in an argument at a beer garden.

Mckenzie’s aunt, Denise Wilson, told the Guyana Chronicle the shooting stemmed from an incident that occurred the night before. She explained that on Sunday night the alleged shooter and five other men had exited a car and visited one of their friends who lives in the yard that McKenzie lives.

“They come hey fuss and buy lemonade, and then went behind de shop fuh talk to one of them friends,” the woman recalled.

Wilson said it was not long after that a man on a CG bike rode up and “lash” the boy (the alleged shooter) to his head.

“All you de hearing is bottle breaking. The same lemonade bottle dem use fuh lash one another, but like de bike man and dis one had a problem,” she said.

According to her, McKenzie, also known as “Denmar”, was returning home, and attempted to “part the fight”, but subsequently ended up in a “brawl” with the alleged shooter.

“Denmar was telling them this is his mother place and dem cannot deh fighting here, and dem turn pun he and another fight start,” the woman recalled.

On Monday, Wilson said, her nephew went about his business as usual, not knowing there was a plot to execute him. According to her, two men on a CG motorcycle rode up in front of her shop at Stanley Place at about 09:00hrs, and the alleged shooter shouted, “The war now start!”

“Dem pass back like 20 minutes after, and dem just shoot den man and ride away,” the woman recalled. “Lil after they pass, a car pass and de driver shout and seh, ‘We carrying he to de hospital!’” she added.

McKenzie was taken to the Woodlands Hospital, but was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. “At Woodlands they needed to do an emergency surgery on him, but that would have cost $500,000; so we transferred him to GPHC,” the woman explained.

McKenzie reportedly told his family that the alleged shooter aimed at his face but he barred with his hands – a lifesaving move.

Investigations into this shooting are continuing.

Living Hell — Anna Catherina woman gives chilling account living with a murderer

By Neil Marks

THE woman who stared down the face of death and finally mustered the courage to tell police that her reputed husband was behind the murder of a businesswoman and her two young sons four years ago has spoken out about the life of misery she had faced. The man, Abishai Caesar, 31, is expected to face three counts of murder today, and also charges for threatening behaviour and assault causing actually bodily harm to his wife.
The woman, who will not be named, went to the police on Friday after Caesar had forced her to strip naked and parade in their yard at the crack of dawn – a threat on which he delivered to shame the woman, and her family who lived a short distance away.

The house Caesar built on squatter land at Tuschen, where the couple lived

The house Caesar built on squatter land at Tuschen, where the couple lived

Hours earlier, at just about midnight, he had brutalised her and said he would deliver on his promise to kill her.

ESCAPE
Once Caesar had left for work at the barber shop he operated in the Tuschen New Housing scheme, East Bank Essequibo, the woman seized the opportunity to escape.
She went to her father’s house, a short distance away, and when it got dark, she went to the police. She would have had to pass Caesar’s barbershop to get to the police outpost.
She told the police that she had been forced to strip, and of the beatings she had received hours earlier. She also told them of previous cases of abuse.

Reports are that Officer McBeth of the Tuschen Outpost went to the home of the couple – a zinc shack built on government reserve at the back of the Tuschen Scheme. The barber was not at home.

On Saturday, at just about lunch time, McBeth visited the barber shop in White Tank Street in the Tuschen Scheme, where he arrested Caesar and took him to the Leonora Police Station.

Once the woman was told of Caesar’s arrest, she returned to the station and told police they should also question Caesar for the 2012 murders of Anna Catherina liquor store owner Jennifer Persaud and her sons Afridi Bacchus, six, and Jadon Persaud, 18 months.

It was a truth that the woman had lived with for years; living a life of fear because Caesar had threatened to kill her and her family if she squealed on him.

The woman told the Guyana Chronicle that on the night of the murders, Caesar had told her he needed money and was heading out.
She said she had seen him go up the neighbour’s house – that of Mrs Persaud. She said she retired to bed, but then she heard screams coming from the house.

CONFESSION
Later, Caesar returned home and confessed to her that he had gone to the house to steal. She said Caesar told her he had managed to find only $3,000, but that Mrs Persaud had awoken and so he had to kill her because she had recognised him.

She said Caesar told her he had seen the young boys lying in the house and had figured they would get up because of the noise, and so he decided in a split second to slit their little throats also.

Caesar was never a suspect in the case, and the couple continued living next door to the murder scene for a while, until they moved into a house situated in the seawall section of Anna Catherina.
Later, they moved in with Caesar’s sister at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, but they were put out of the house, the woman said.

Abishai Caesar

Abishai Caesar

They then moved into a house with an elderly lady a little down the street from Caesar’s sister, and in January of this year, Caesar said he had acquired some money and was going to squat on a piece of land on the government reserve, and they moved there with their daughter.

The woman is originally from Port Kaituma in the North West District, but did not grow up with her parents. She was sent to the Coast to live with her grandmother at the age of four, and when she was in her teens, she moved in with her father, her stepmother and their family.

It was there, at the age of 15, that she first set eyes on Caesar, then 26. He was working as a mason on a house not too far from her father’s house. Caesar would come to the house to buy egg-ball and other snacks the family was selling.
The two of them struck up a relationship, and at the age of 16, fearing that she wouldn’t do well at the CXC exams and would waste the money her family would spend on the examinations, she dropped out of school and started living with Caesar.

ABUSE
She said the abuse started early, but she thought that things would change as time went by. The two ended up having a daughter, and, the woman said, she had hoped that that would have caused Caesar to end his abusive ways, but that did not happen.

And then came last Friday’s torrent of blows, and she decided she had to flee for her life and that of her daughter.

“I had to do it, or I would have died. I can’t go back on the years; now I have to look ahead.”
When questioned by police, Caesar confessed to killing the Anna Catherina woman and her two children.

The woman’s father told the Guyana Chronicle that he had always suspected that his daughter was being abused, but every time he asked, she would deny there was a problem.

The last time — when she was punched to the face and he had seen the marks around her eyes — he asked her what had happened, but she did not fess up. He decided to confront Caesar, who claimed the woman was stung by bees.

“He is sick; he will (rot) in jail,” the man declared.

The woman is now left to contemplate her future. She would like to enter the Guyana Police Force, but is not sure how that will happen, and how she will take care of her daughter.

Caesar has four other children – two boys and two girls. He is expected to be arraigned in court today.

What is notable is that there is no mention of the recovery of the raw gold stolen because it is in the pocket of the police. It is open season on miners, they dig up the gold, the pnc operatives rob them then the pnc police take away the gold from the robbers and put it in their pockets. This is motivation for finally doing their jobs as they claim the spoils.

Shop owner shot during brazen daylight robbery

APRIL 29, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

– Police hunt woman among three suspects
As if losing his wife several months ago wasn’t enough grief, a 42-year-old shop owner was shot around 11:30 hrs yesterday during a brazen robbery at his Lot 295 Savage Street, North East La Penitence, Georgetown business place, located at the bottom flat of the two-storey premises.

Shot shop owner: David Sukhnandan

Shot shop owner: David Sukhnandan

David Sukhnandan sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot and is hospitalised at a private hospital.
According to information received, Sukhnandan was shot when a woman entered his shop and pretended to be a customer by ordering a bottle of cooking gas. When Sukhnandan opened his shop door to hand over the gas, two men barged into his premises.
While the men terrorised Sukhnandan for cash, the woman, according to reports, was busy packing a bag with groceries. The trio then escaped in a waiting motor car after shooting their victim.
Police were able to obtain the vehicle’s number plate.
At the man’s home yesterday, his mother, Neowrangee Sukhnandan said that she was upstairs when she heard her son screaming in the shop. “Right away I know it was thief because it is not the first time.”
The woman said that she opened a trap door in the upper flat which leads down to the shop and saw the two men firing shots at her son. “I heard like four shots and when I open the door, I see when they shooting him,” the woman said.
Fighting to hold back tears, the older Sukhnandan said that when she saw her son being shot at, for a moment she thought that he was dead, and she hurriedly closed the trap door to prevent the robbers from gaining access to the upper flat.
“I was begging them to leave my son…I was begging and praying,” Neowrangee Sukhnandan said. She added that only last November her son lost his wife, Seema Sukhnandan.
The woman said that she had actually lost track of the amount of times bandits robbed their business place. Before her daughter-in-law died, bandits went into the shop and shot her during a robbery some years back.
Also, Neowrangee Sukhnandan recalled that on October 31, last, when Halloween would have been celebrated in some countries, four men, dressed in costumes tried to gain entry into her home.
“My grandson was outside and he see the men in their costumes and suspect they were bandits, and he run in the house and pulled in the door, so they didn’t get to come in,” the woman recalled.
At the scene, neighbours gathered outside the shop after they heard what had happened. One woman said that she heard the gunshots but “thought it was squib”. Another woman suggested that it is about time the Sukhnandans get surveillance cameras since they are being targeted too often.
Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
Only Wednesday, a businessman shot a bandit in his face after he had broken and entered his electronics store on Croal Street, Georgetown. The shot bandit managed to escape from the scene, but later turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.
That matter is also being investigated.

Three of the bandits escaped with an undisclosed sum of local and foreign currency they took from the casino as well as money and valuables they took from patrons during the half-hour ordeal.
But police captured a fourth bandit as he was trying to escape through a back door when the ranks arrived. They also impounded a car that the attackers left behind.
Police retrieved a shotgun that the gunmen had taken from a security guard and another firearm that one of the bandits had disposed of before escaping.
At press time last night, police were hot on the trail of the rest of the gang.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed that the detained gunman, known as ‘Dougla’, has been cooperating with investigators.
The suspects are believed to be from Onderneeming, Essequibo, Independence Boulevard, and a third from Kitty and South Ruimveldt.
“The police have information about who the people are. The homes of the suspects were searched and wet clothing was found at two locations. The occupants were questioned, and they indicated to the police that the individuals did not sleep there last night (Thursday); they (the suspects) went there early today, (Friday) changed and left.
“We also have video footage of the entire incident and in reviewing we saw one suspect conceal a weapon (at the scene) and we retrieved that weapon, as well as the shotgun from the suspect we have in custody.”
Among those wounded are Police Lance Corporal Andrew Richardson of Impact Base, who was shot to his abdomen; Eon Garraway was shot in  his left hand, James Gregory sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot; Orlando Knights was shot in the left hand and Udairan Sookraj sustained injuries to his right hand.
Melissa Ferguson, Jermaine Mason and Roshel Fraser were assaulted during the ordeal.
There are indications that Lance Corporal Richardson and staffer, James Gregory, may have accidentally shot each other.
“James was clearing out the kitchen and same time he (the police) went into the kitchen and the police had a brown coat over his uniform so when James hear the door open and he turn around, the policeman shot at him and he shot at the policeman,” a hotel staffer said.
The wounded policeman was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while the staffers who were shot were treated at Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital.
A police release stated that the attack began when four men with firearms entered the casino and discharged several rounds into the air.
After relieving a security guard of his shotgun and ammunition, the gunmen ordered patrons and staff to lie on the ground. They then took the security guard to the cashier’s cage where the cashier was also held at gunpoint and relieved of an undisclosed sum of foreign and local currency.
The men arrived at the hotel in a white vehicle bearing a fake number plate, PRR 2545 and three of them managed to escape on foot. Police were able to apprehend one of the suspects, who was left behind in the casino.
Police also impounded the car, which was left at the scene. Video footage taken by a reporter showed the licence number PPP 4111, imprinted on the vehicle wind-screen.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the vehicle was carjacked last Sunday after taking two men to Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
Video footage taken by a reporter after the attack showed patrons still on the ground, and one terrified woman weeping as she hid under a table, as police ranks, including ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken,  scoured the casino for the gunmen.
The ranks are also shown lifting a barman who was shot in the hand. They are later seen with the gunman who was captured at the scene.
The security guard who was relieved of his firearm said that “about five of them” come up to him and told him not to move.
“Dem man seh pass de shotgun, (and) dem man tek away the shotgun and tell me sit down.
“If I did shoot, dead sure I woudda deh pon de ground, but I woudda kill one of dem,” the guard said.
Another guard said that he was attacked while he was at a guard hut.
One patron said that he was inside the casino playing on one of the machines when the men stormed the building.
“All I hear was ‘everybody go down on the floor’ and I thought it was a mad man run in but when I watch, I see a man with a gun,” the man said.
He added that everyone in the casino followed the men’s instructions.  I turn and see everybody lying on the ground and I decide to lie on the ground, too.
“I was on the floor and I was hurrying to take out my money to put it in my boots and same time the guy pass and say ‘fat man what you doing there? Pass your phone,’ and he asked what else I got and when I said nothing, he go away,” the man recalled.
The patron and some others have vowed not to go back into a casino.
A woman also said that she had just won some $20,000 when the gunmen entered the premises.
According to one of the hotel’s taxi drivers, the men pulled up alongside his vehicle and four men exited with guns.
“This vehicle rolled up and these men exited. All of them had guns in their hands. They stick us up and put us to walk in front of them to go into the casino. They walk to the door and take away the security guards gun.”
He said that once they were inside, the men started to open fire before ordering everyone to lie on the floor.
“They robbed the casino and everyone who was in there. After some time, the one who was guarding everyone shouted ‘time up’ and two of them followed him while one of them was still at the back,” the taxi driver said.
He added that one of the gunmen told the other two robbers who were already at the front preparing to escape that the fourth man was still at the back, but the three men continued with their escape plan.
Kaieteur News understands that when the police arrived at the scene, the fourth gunman was struggling to get the casino’s back door open.
“The back door is funny. You cannot open the door from the inside…you have to go all the way around to the outside and opened it so that is why he couldn’t escape,” a hotel employee said.
One patron told the police that yesterday’s incident was “like a horror movie.”

“Me come downstairs to prepare for the market around 03:30hrs and see three boys. They had on mask and tell me feh carry them to the money and gold.”

The traumatised woman said the men tied up her brother, and one of them stood guard over him outside while the other two demanded that she lead them to the money upstairs.

She said that as they approached the door, she forgot where she had left the keys because she was traumatized by fright, and the men started to hit her in the head with the gun as she fumbled.

The woman said she pleaded with the men not to hurt her, and called on her sister-in-law to open the door.

“After me sister-in-law open the door, they point a gun on she and said ‘don’t say a word’. Me carry them upstairs to me bedroom and open the wardrobe and give them everything me had.”

Shirkissoon said she gave the men over $2 million in cash, which was her business money, and jewellery she had accumulated over the years, worth over $1.5 million.
The men also took $50,000 she had in her possession, which was to be used for the day; and, not satisfied, they ransacked the house looking for more.

While this was ongoing, Samuel Fernandes of Bulletwood Street, Rose Hall Town, who works with the Shirkisoons on weekends, came in as usual to assist with preparation for the market, and he saw the tied-up man outside with the bandit over him. He raised an alarm and a scuffle ensued with him and the bandit. He managed to pull off the bandit’s mask, and was shot in the shoulder.

The bandits then fled, taking the booty with them. Fernandes remains a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

Attack on Ramada Princess Hotel…Casino guard set up robbery

MAY 1, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

The gang behind last Friday’s brazen attack at the Ramada Princess Hotel had help from a casino guard, who provided the gunmen with intricate details of the hotel’s operations, including the ideal time to strike.

The security guard, who is a former national athlete, was detained yesterday after Wayne Griffith, the gunman who was captured at the scene, provided police with the identities of the rest of the gang.  Four of the five gunmen were still at large yesterday.
The suspects are reportedly from Onderneeming, Essequibo, Independence Boulevard and a third from Kitty and South Ruimveldt.
Police had retrieved wet clothing from two homes that they searched on Friday.
Kaieteur News understands that the detained guard has stated that the heist was planned some two weeks ago.

“Less security and more money after 2.00 A.M”
It was around that time that one of the gunmen asked the security guard to provide him with the details about the security operation at the casino.
The guard reportedly told the gang that there were “fewer people, less security and more money” at the casino after 02.00 hrs.
He also informed his associates that only two armed guards would be at the gate after midnight.
Prior to carrying out the attack, Wayne Griffith, the captured gunman, did surveillance of the casino.
The plan was for the robbers would split up the loot at an Albouystown residence.
On Thursday night, the ‘inside man’ came off duty an hour before midnight. He then met with the rest of the gang and they rehearsed the attack.
When it was close to 03.00 hrs, the guard indicated that that was the ideal time to “hit” the casino. He reportedly then went home.
The heist, carried out by four masked men,   apparently went as planned, except for the fact that the same gunman who had done the surveillance on the business place got trapped at the back of the premises.
A police release stated that the attack began at around 03.30 hrs, when four men with firearms entered the casino and discharged several rounds into the air.
