Mystery arsonist spreads fear at Lethem

MAY 6, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

– torches minibus, throws devices into two houses
Who is setting those fires at Tabatinga, Lethem?
That’s what terrified residents of the community are trying to find out, after a mystery arsonist torched a minibus late last month and threw incendiary devices into the bedrooms of an elderly woman and a Health official early yesterday. Fortunately, in both instances, the victims of yesterday’s attacks managed to put the fires out.
The culprit, who attacks just before dawn, first struck on April 27, at the home of Bernadene Gomes. Mrs. Gomes said that she awoke at around 03.00 hrs that day to the sight of “big flames” in her yard.
“When we got up, smoke was in the house and the bus was on fire.” She said that the vehicle, BPP 1126, was destroyed. The bus was worth some $8M and she had the vehicle for four years. Her property is fenced.
Mrs. Gomes said that she could think of no one who would want to harm her family. She admitted that the strange attack has left her unable to sleep soundly.
“I keep going over this thing. You can’t sleep, we are living in fear right now.”
It is believed that the same individual struck twice yesterday.
One victim, 68-year-old Bibi Ann Austin, lives three houses away from Mrs. Gomes.
Mrs. Austin said that she had gone to her washroom, then returned to bed, only to awake at around 04.30 hrs to find that her mosquito net and some of her louvre panes were on fire.
She managed to extinguish the flames, and later heard her dog chasing someone “up the road.” The pensioner said that she informed ranks at the Lethem Police Station of the attack, but the ranks never came.
Like her neighbour, she has no idea why someone would want to harm her.
Then, about 30 minutes later, the arsonist attacked at the home of Regional Environmental Officer Juanita Jerrick-Williams.
Mrs. Williams said that she was in bed with three of her five children. The health officer said that she was just getting out of bed to pray, when she felt “something wet” on her back.
“By the time I turned around, I saw fire on my bed and mosquito net. I saw a shadow running to an unfinished building next to me, but we were too busy putting out the fire.”
No one was hurt, but the hair of her 12-year-old daughter was singed.
She said that the police came and saw footprints in her yard.
Mrs. Williams said that she has worked in Lethem for some 24 years, and has no problems with anyone.
Police sources at Lethem confirmed that they are investigating the reports.

Armed bandits rob local exporter near Police station

In the midst of the Guyana Police Force declaring a 19 per cent decrease in serious crimes, a popular exporter was robbed early Tuesday morning near the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Reports indicate that businessman Doodnauth, also known as “Mango man” was held at gunpoint at about 10:45h obliquely opposite the Ruimveldt Police Station.
According to the businessman, he was relieved of $2.9 million and believed that the gunmen followed him from a local city bank.
He related to Guyana Times that he and his wife went to a city bank on Robb Street and while on their way home, they stopped at a store near the Ruimveldt Police Station.
It was during this stop that the gunmen pounced on them.
According to Doodnauth, he was hesitant at first to hand over his bag but the bandits punched him and then grabbed the bag containing the cash and other important documents.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that the businessman’s wife, who is a frequent customer at the store, went into the shop and left her husband in the car.
“The female occupant of the car entered the store while the man remained in the vehicle when two men approached the car. The entire scene lasted roughly 30 seconds,” the eyewitness recalled.
The two men, who were described as “tall and of African descent” then made their escape in a white Toyota car.
They were both wearing striped T-shirts and short pants.
The incident was reported to the Police and an investigation was launched. However, no arrests were made up to press time.

Corentyne gas station guards robbed

As law enforcement officers in Berbice map out a plan to put a halt to robberies in the county, two security guards at M Ali and Son Service Station at Strand were on Tuesday night tied up and robbed.
Reports indicate that the perpetrators used a screwdriver to stick up the guards and then bound them. They were relieved of an undisclosed quantity of phone cards and $30,000.
Also on Tuesday night, two men armed with cutlasses robbed a Port Mourant businesswoman. Reports indicate that the masked men broke into the home of the businesswoman and took $60,000 from her.
Less than 24 hours before, two armed men, also masked, attacked a businessman two doors away, and relieved him of a quantity of cash and jewellery.
Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam addressing the issue of crime on the Corentyne said there was a criminal group which operated out of Free Yard, Port Mourant.
He said the group had been active in March but had gone dormant. His comments came as he addressed concerns of residents in Rose Hall Town, at a meeting on Wednesday evening. “There is no way you ought to accept what is happening in your community,” the Commander told residents.
He explained that there was another gang which operated out of Rose Hall, “And they bring people into Rose Hall. They operate in twos or in threes to commit robberies.”
Recently, a man known to the Police disarmed and shot a Police Officer hitting his bulletproof vest.
One resident at Wednesday’s meeting who witnessed the incident said the act was puzzling. “The officer was begging his colleague for his firearm. The second Police refused to give the first one the gun and I believe that if he had actually handed over the gun to the other Police the criminal would have been shot, but for reasons unknown the gun was never handed over.”
According to the Commander, the Police are not having an easy task even after placing persons before the courts. “Now the Magistrates are not inclined to remand prisoners based on what happened at Camp Street, so we put them in and they come back out to do the same things again. They don’t mind, the criminals would find money for a lawyer and money for bail. They go in and they come back out and we start the same cycle all over again. The community has to help Berbice,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir Humanitarian Mission Skills Training Centre and Counselling Centre at Port Mourant, Pandit Surish Sugrim noted that the way Police Officers in Georgetown handle crime was different from the way officers in Berbice handle crime.
He said there was need for more Police vehicles because of the long distance between police stations on the Corentyne. “Police alone cannot solve crime, as a community, we need to work together.” He suggested that there be more frequent Police patrols in the community.
Sugrim, however, questioned why all Police Officers were not equipped with firearms and handcuffs as in some Caribbean states.
Assistant Commissioner Amsterdam said if Police Officers used their guns in an indiscriminate way, there would be consequences they would have to face: “We are arming our ranks while they are on duty and there are some ranks – depending on where they are stationed – [who] have personal firearms,” he said.
According to the Commander, more vehicles are expected to come to the Division shortly. However, he could not promise that the Rose Hall Police Outpost would be getting its own patrol vehicle.
One resident, who is a budding social worker, questioned the reason for not having in place a programme to reform prisoners. “They need help and I believe that some of them can change their attitude if they get the right help that they need… When they do come out [from prison] is there a follow-up check to see what they are doing?” she questioned.
Most of the armed robberies committed along the Lower and Central Corentyne over the past three weeks have targeted the business community.

East La Penitence police under fire for perceived inaction

MAY 8, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

A Lodge resident is alleging that police officers from the East La Penitence Police Station refused to arrest the assailant of a battered man.
The victim, Richard Washington, who was assaulted about his body, is currently in the Georgetown Public Hospital with an injured arm and lacerations to his face and neck.
According to Ingrid Baird, of Princes Street, Lodge, Georgetown, Washington is a close family friend who often visits her son, much to the plight of neighbours in the area.
She told Kaieteur News that she was home when she saw a man called “Miggy” push Washington into
a nearby drain not far from her house. She said as she drew closer she saw some other men in the area rush to get involved in a brawl.
“And if you see how they tackling him and stabbing he up,” the woman said.
She said that when she came upon the scene, the men had already left Washington, covered in blood—unable to make a sound. The woman who expressed concern for the young man said that she believes that they were trying to kill him.
He was subsequently rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital by family members. She recounted that she returned home from the hospital to find all of her windows shattered in her house and broken glass bottles littering the kitchen floor, the living room and bedroom. She also observed broken bottles in her yard.
Baird told this newspaper that some men in her neighbourhood have been relentlessly harassing her and her working son, Jermaine Pollard, since they moved in two years ago. “They keep saying how they gonna murder me and my son; they threatening we telling we got to move out cause we are not Lodge people.”
Baird, 45, said that she had reported instances where these accused attackers barged into her yard and pushed her down. She said as recent as three weeks ago, a man called “Roger” stabbed her son’s girlfriend in her shoulder on her way to the shop to buy groceries for breakfast.
Both of these incidents she had reported at the East La Penitence Police Station but no one has been held responsible for the offences.
The woman, who said that she is a peaceful resident in her community, claims the police officers at the station only took statements but no thorough investigations were carried out.
“And I fed up; I have no peace in my house cause I keep believing someone gonna come in and kill me and my son.”
The woman said that only one person among the many of Washington’s attackers has been picked up by the police since the incident.
Despite these comments, Kaieteur News was reliably informed that police ranks are making strides into investigating the matter.

Enraged, Gordon picked up a piece of wood and started to beat her about her body. He then dragged her to a room in the lower flat of the house and hacked her to death, severing her head in the process.

“He tell me ‘I kill she, you know. She done; I going and hang meself’,” Fernandes detailed.

Fernandez said he tried to talk to Gordon to cut time so that he would not go anywhere; and as Gordon made his way to another street, he was cornered by several residents.

Fernandez said he went personally to the Rose Hall Town Police Outpost and brought an officer to the scene.

The family friend believes that if the police had acted earlier, the woman’s life could have been saved.

Ryan Vaux, called “Gaza”, 36, a former member of the Tactical Services Unit of the Guyana Police Force was shot while driving away from some armed police ranks outside the Sparendaam Police Station.

Ryan Vaux called “Gaza”[inset) car was pulled from a trench minutes after he collapsed from the gunshot wound.

Ryan Vaux called “Gaza”(inset) car was pulled from a trench minutes after he collapsed from the gunshot wound.

Vaux who resided at 80 Norton Street, Lodge, eventually collapsed from the gunshot wound and crashed his Toyota Spacio into a trench about 800 metres east of the police station.
The police in a statement said that about 01:10 hour yesterday, ranks of a mobile police patrol along Broad Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara, saw a man running behind a motor vehicle bearing registration PSS 6835 and shouting that he had been robbed of a sum of money by persons in the vehicle.
The police said that the ranks subsequently intercepted the motor vehicle with the driver and another man inside. In the passenger’s possession was $21,000.
According to the police the passenger along with the robbery victim who was identified as Deryck Persaud, 46, of Cummings Lodge, were placed into the police vehicle, while a police rank entered Vaux’s vehicle and they were taken to the Sparendaam Police Station.
There Deryck Persaud informed the police that he had been robbed by the two men who were armed with a handgun and a knife.
He told police that he was walking along the road when the car pulled up alongside him and the passenger got out and confronted him with a “Rambo” knife.
Persaud said that the man demanded his money and he initially resisted. He claimed that the driver of the car who apparently got angry by his reluctance to hand over his money, got out and pointed a gun at him, forcing him to hand over $25,000.
Persaud said that shortly after, he saw a police mobile patrol and he informed the ranks that he was just robbed by two men in the car that was speeding away in front of him.
The police gave chase and caught up with the vehicle and took the men to the station.
According to a source, at the station, the police decided to carry out a search of the car that was parked on the roadway.
Two armed ranks stood guard while a detective effected the search in Vaux’s presence.
The police said that as this was being done, Vaux suddenly bent down into the driver’s side of the car and pulled out a gun which he pointed at one of the armed ranks.
This newspaper was told that the ranks warned Vaux and ordered him to drop the weapon but he refused and drove away instead.
The ranks then discharged a round from their rifle at Vaux but he managed to drive out of their sight.
The police later drove in the direction in which Vaux had driven and found the car in the trench that separates Vryheid’s Lust and Better Hope.
It turned out that the weapon Vaux had brandished was a pellet handgun. It was found in the crashed car.
The other suspect is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, relatives of the dead man who turned up to identify his body are not too convinced by the police version of the incident.
They say that the police explanation leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
“Why would he point a pellet gun at the police who had rifles in their hands?” questioned one female relative.
Vaux’s wife who was also at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary declined to speak to this newspaper.
However she told investigators that her husband left home around 21:00 hours on Sunday to ply his trade which is usually done from outside the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
She said that she was only informed about his death when a reporter contacted her shortly before midday yesterday.

Lured, beaten and forced to have sex with foster parent

MAY 12, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

…woman tells her story of abuse

By Jeanna Pearson
A young woman was lured, beaten and forced to have sex with her former foster parent while his wife looked on. Someone allegedly videoed the entire episode of abuse.
This woman is ashamed to be photographed because, she says, she feels less of a person after the video of the act was posted on the internet.
“He called me and told me to come to the guest house. When I reached there and opened the door him, his wife and another person was sitting on the bed waiting for me,” the 20-year-old said.
“Then his wife grab me and ripped my clothes and tell me that I wanted her husband so she will give me a licking. Then she tell me to perform oral sex on him while they watch.”
The young woman, who was 19 years old at the time of the abuse, said she quickly obeyed because it was three of them against her and she was afraid that they would kill her.
She said that she went to live with the couple after her parents died and her family “split up” when she was 14 years old.
She would clean the house and complete her chores on time, she said. But afterward when she would retire to her room, she recalled, the man would come and try to touch her. Complaining did her no justice, she stated, remembering that every time she told her foster mom, the woman would chide her for lying.
“She never believed me. She believed everything he told her,” she said.
She said that right after the recent assault she called a friend and they went to the Brickdam Police Station, where a statement was taken and a medical certificate was provided. Yet, eight months later, the police have failed to bring her justice. She is continuously being harassed with death threats.
She said the police had informed her that the file would be taken to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice on the matter. She said that she was being bombarded by the couple that if she pushed the issue there will be fatal consequences.
She said that the police might not have done anything if the video was not uploaded on the internet. ‘A’ Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken, stated that the police were aware of the matter and are investigating.
However, now she is forced to not only battle the trauma of the assault but also that the video has gone viral.
She has been receiving counseling since the traumatic incident. She has contemplated suicide and she had suffered bouts of depression after the video went viral. “When I saw the video I felt really bad. I wanted to kill myself but I didn’t do it because I was receiving counseling. They wanted to ruin me. I didn’t have any relationship with that man,” she said, nervously rubbing her hands against the side of the chair.
She said the man had started “touching” and “rubbing her foot” when she was 16 years old. “The police are saying they don’t have enough evidence and it is disappointing. I felt disappointed with the police because they did nothing to help me get justice.”
Psychologist Dr. Dawn Stewart, who has been counseling the young lady, stated that she suffered significant emotional trauma after the assault and it escalated further when the video was posted on the internet.
“This mother who has a one-year-old child wanted to kill herself and her child. She thought no one was listening to her, no one trusted her, no one believed her and she still has trouble sleeping at nights. She wakes up in the middle of the night, remembering the gruesome assault.
“She said the video became her only evidence yet nothing moving on the law enforcement side. She said the persons were brought in for questioning by the police but was later released on bail.
“Why aren’t these persons prosecuted for their action? She hasn’t been given justice. Women need protection from the State!” Stewart said.
“The police need to investigate and bring charges against these people. The justice system is too slow…I believe that they don’t care and they take women for granted and this is a perfect example. When her first complaint was lodged it was completely ignored,” she indicated.
Stewart added that even if a woman “puts herself in a place where she can be raped or sexually assaulted, it is still unlawful for the perpetrator to commit the act.
“Because someone was raped or sexually assaulted that doesn’t mean that they dressed a way to attract that sort of attention or they acted a way that they should be raped. Rape is rape regardless of whatever the situation they find themselves in. Women’s lives matter. We need to be assertive and aggressive about taking care of our women,” she said.
She stated that Public Security Ministry should start adopting a “swift justice” method in handling cases of violence against women.
“This young lady needs to start her life over but she cannot do that if these people are not brought before the legal system.”
According to the United States Department of State 2015 report on this country’s human rights, local NGOs in Guyana observed that in most cases domestic violence reports were not taken confidentially but rather were discussed in the open at police stations. They were not treated as a matter of urgency.
For last year, law enforcement received 233 reports of rape and only 36 persons were charged. There was a large court backlog. A Judge has discretion to issue a sentence of any length in a rape conviction, depending upon the circumstances and severity of the act committed.
The police received 2,170 reports of domestic violence cases, and 1,131 persons were charged, resulting in a lack of confidence in the judicial system.
The report indicated that there are reports of police accepting bribes from perpetrators and other reports of Magistrates applying inadequate sentences after conviction.
Child Counselor Abigail Loncke told Kaieteur News, that she was left sickened by the content of the video. “I cannot imagine the emotional and psychological trauma that young lady must be going through,” she said, highlighting the woman not only has to deal with the trauma of the assault but also that the video was viral.
“It is painful enough to be abused but then to have the whole country know about that abuse…that you were beaten and then forced to perform sex on someone while others watched on that’s not only sadistic, but a life scar. These people were once entrusted to protect her – that too is traumatic. The mother figure forcing a girl to have sex with the father figure— that is unacceptable,” she said.
The United Nations Organization had reported that as many as seven in ten women in various parts of the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point of their lives, most times at the hands of persons close to them.
The Heads of the organization have since called on Governments to honour their obligation to end violence against women and girls as outlined in the Convention of the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women.
Rape victims and victims of sexual assault face bouts of low self-esteem, high risk behavior, while some of them exhibit suicidal behaviour.

The body of 75-year-old Pairadeau Mars, called ‘Perry’, was found at around 19.00 hrs yesterday in his study, after his wife arrived at the couple’s Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar home.
Kaieteur News understands that his hands were bound with duct-tape, and duct-tape was also wrapped around his mouth and neck. Police reportedly found a hammer and cutlass nearby.
The victim’s home was ransacked, and there was evidence that the killers had feasted in the home, since bottles and wrappers were strewn on the floor. There was also evidence that the killers lit the stove.
From information police have received, the killers are individuals who were known to Mr. Mars, a remigrant and Professor, who had lectured in ethnic studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
One key player in the callous killing is believed to be a young woman, who had lived a few houses away from the victim. Sources said that she was still regularly seen in the area, and would reportedly visit Mr. Mars’ home and beg for money.
Residents reportedly saw the suspects arrive in a car, and later saw them leaving the home with suitcases.
According to reports, the victim’s wife, Joan Mars, had travelled to Linden yesterday, and last communicated with her husband at around 14:00 hrs. She reportedly called at around 16:00 hrs and got no response.
She reportedly arrived at around 19.00 hrs and immediately realised that something was amiss, since the front door was ajar. Upon entering, she saw her husband’s bound body on the study floor.
Because the body was still warm, the woman reportedly believed that Mr. Mars was still alive, and, with assistance from neighbours, rushed him to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The body was later taken to the Lyken Funeral Home.

“Casual” argument between brothers-in-law ends in death

MAY 13, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Residents of Haslington were left in shock last evening after a “causal” argument between two brothers-in-law ended in deadly fashion.
Fifty-two year-old Terrance Adams was killed around 20:00hrs outside a shop he operated. Adams’ alleged assailant, Les Hamilton, was said to have been under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
The dead man’s brother, Leyland Nelson, told Kaieteur News that Adams and Hamilton got into an argument just around 14:00hrs yesterday. He said that the dispute had simmered, but manifested itself again last night.
According to Nelson, when Hamilton began quarreling again, Adams brushed him off “because he knew he (Hamilton) was drunk.” Nelson said that his brother told Hamilton that he would deal with the issue “another time, when he (Hamilton) sober up” and so the argument died down again.
Nelson indicated that Hamilton then left the shop, “and I left a little after to go and buy tennis roll and cheese for us to eat”. He said that he was riding his bicycle returning to the shop when he saw a large crowd. Nelson said that he inquired and was told “Les jus’ jook up yuh brother.”
Nelson said that he rode further along the street and saw his brother lying on the road in a pool of blood.
Hamilton, who made no attempt to leave the murder scene, was apprehended on the spot, while the victim was rushed to Georgetown Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Pensioner robbed after withdrawing money from city bank

minutes after making a withdrawal from a Robb Street, Georgetown bank, a Charlestown pensioner was pounced upon by a lone gunman on Wednesday and relieved of the bag containing the money and other personal items.

According to information received, Ron Ramkarran, 75, withdrew $200,000 from the bank and while he was walking along Regent Street, the lone gunman attacked him.

The pensioner put up a fight, but the gunman gun-butted the elderly man to his head resulting in him receiving injuries.

Upon seeing this, a businessman who was in the vicinity discharged four rounds from his licensed firearm into the air to ward off the bandit, but instead the gunman pulled away the bag and escaped in a motor car.

From all indications, the gunman might have trailed Ramkarran from the bank to Regent Street where he carried out the attack.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed the robbery occurred, and noted that the Police are in possession of the registration number of the getaway car and are continuing their investigations.

Two Mondays ago, a businessman and his wife withdrew $2.9 million from the same bank and were robbed at La Penitence after being tailed by two gunmen in a white Toyota Corona motor car.

It was reported that on the day in question, the man and his wife had stopped to make a purchase at a grocery store near Ruimveldt Police Station when the robbery was executed.

One of the gunmen reportedly held the businessman at gunpoint and relieved him of the bag containing the money.

The three men were nabbed last Saturday after they were found tailing another businessman from a city bank. Reports are that the businessman observed that a vehicle was travelling behind him for a prolonged period and phoned the Police, who dispatched a patrol immediately. As the Police were about to intercept the vehicle, the occupants attempted to exit and join a minibus, but were captured.

Lacytown man breaks into Stabroek Market stall

an unemployed man of Alexander Street, Lacytown, Georgetown, was Thursday granted $100,000 bail for breaking and entering by Magistrate Faith McGusty when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Leon Obermuller, 43, of 117 Alexander Street, pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on April 27, at Croal Street and Brummell Place, Stabroek, Georgetown, he broke and entered a store belonging to Vishal Ramnarine with intent to commit a felony.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman, in his facts, told the Court that on April 26, Ramnarine secured his business and left for home.

However, on April 27, while at home he received a call from MMC Security personnel informing him that his store had been broken into, since the alarm had gone off.

Ramnarine made his way to his business where he was confronted with Obermuller, who was armed with a dangerous weapon and attacked him. Ramnarine retaliated by discharging three rounds with his licensed firearm aimed at the accused. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and charged for the crime. Obermuller showed no visible signs of injury while in the prisoner’s dock.

Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail based on the nature of the offence committed and the punishment which it attracts and the fact that the defendant was a flight risk. . There was also material evidence submitted.

However, after granting the defendant bail, Magistrate McGusty ordered him to return to Court on June 2.

Businessman slapped with fraudulent conversion, forgery charges

a 48-year-old East Coast Demerara businessman was on Thursday slapped with four charges, including fraudulent conversion and forgery when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates Courts.

Gopaul Tiwarie, of 89 Success Old Road, East Coast Demerara, and proprietor of Speedy’s Enterprise, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

It is alleged that Tiwarie, on May 28, 2015, being entrusted with $10 million by Ghardarie Sewnarine, to pay to the Deeds Registry, Georgetown, fraudulently converted same into his own use.

The second charge stated that on May 28, 2015, with intent to defraud, the businessman presented a transport to Ghardarie Sewnarine to show it was issued by the Deeds Registry, knowing same to be forged. It is also alleged that the defendant, between April 1, 2015 and May 25, 2015, conspired with persons known and unknown to him, to forge the transport to show it was issued by the Deeds Registry.

The businessman was also slapped with two other counts of unlawfully and maliciously discharging a loaded firearm at Detective Constables Annai and Deonarine, with intent to resist lawful apprehension.

This incident occurred on May 9, 2016 at Diamond, East Bank Demerara

In his bail application, Tiwarie’s Attorney, Bernard Da Silva told the Court that the gun charges were mere allegations against his client, since he was immediately apprehended and dusted for gunpowder residue which was not found.

He also stated that no weapon was found on his client or in his car.

As it relates to the forgery charges, the Attorney argued that given their nature they would demand extensive work and investigation, which will in turn create unnecessary delays.

The Attorney requested reasonable bail for his client who he said usually took care of his sick brother who was diagnosed with cancer.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte did not object to bail, but requested that the defendant surrender his passport and report weekly to the fraud squad at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.

Hunte also told the Court he was seeking further legal advice on the charges.

Tiwarie was granted $500,000 bail for both of the gun charges, and was ordered to lodge his passport at the Court, and report weekly to the fraud department of the CID headquarters.

He will return to Court on May 31, for statements.

Tiwarie have similar matters pending in the courts.

-told her wife would be out
Retired professor, Pairadeau Mars, was bound, beaten and strangled last Thursday by a gang of youths shortly after telling a 17-year-old girl to come over to his Prashad Nagar house, since his wife would not be there.

Murdered: Pairadeau Mars

Murdered: Pairadeau Mars

Police are in possession of evidence that showed that the 75-year-old had texted the teen to ask her to come over while his spouse was out.
In custody last night are two girls, aged 17and 15, and three young men aged between 15 and 18. Police also detained a sixth individual who was allegedly found with an item that the killers had stolen from Mars’s Lot 395 Bissessar Street home.
Police recovered a laptop computer, a mobile phone, an Xbox play station, and $20,000 in local currency after arresting the youths, who all reside in Sophia.
The teens have reportedly all admitted to robbing Mars, but also claimed that they had not planned to kill him. They are all likely to be charged with murder by Monday.
The 17-year-old girl was known to Professor Mars, since she had previously lived a few doors away from the victim. She is also said to have been a frequent visitor to the home where the remigrant and his wife lived.
He is said to have often given her small sums of money.
The teen has reportedly told police that after receiving a text message from Mars, she contacted her 16-year-old boyfriend and told him that the elderly man would be alone at home, and they could rob him. The boyfriend reportedly then contacted some of his friends, who became involved in the plot.
Shortly after 14.00 hrs on Thursday, the 17-year-old and a 15-year-old girl went to Mr. Mars’s residence and were invited in.
While the girls were in his study, the elder girl, who had left the front door open, reportedly texted her 17-year-old boyfriend and his associates and told them to enter the house.
The other youths reportedly then entered the study and bound Mr. Mars with duct tape. According to a statement given by the 17-year-old, the retired professor told the teens to take whatever they wanted, but to spare his life.
Instead, some of the youths then gagged the elderly man, then beat and strangled him.
They then gathered up a laptop, play-station, cell phone and $25,000 and other items. After putting the items in suitcases they stopped a passing taxi, which took them to ‘C’ Field, Sophia.
Mr. Mars’s wife, Joan Mars, who was in Linden, spoke to her husband by phone at around 14.00 hrs. She failed to contact him after that.
At around 19.00 hrs, the woman arrived home and found the front door open. She then entered the study and found her husband slumped in a chair, with his hands and feet duct-taped together. Duct tape was also wrapped around his mouth.
Police confirmed that they also found packs of condoms at the scene, as well as sexual stimulants.
The retired professor was taken to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that members of the public provided police with crucial information which resulted in the arrest of the suspects.
Some of the slain man’s neighbours had reportedly told detectives that they had seen the youths arrive at Mr. Mars’s residence and eventually leave with suitcases.
Yesterday, relatives of the detained 15-year-old girl recalled that she had left the family’s Sophia home around 14.00 hrs on Thursday to meet her 17-year-old friend, who was staying at her boyfriend’s home in Sophia.
She eventually returned home, but they were unaware that anything was amiss until detectives turned up at their residence Thursday night to take her into custody.
The teen reportedly does not attend school and lives with her grandmother.
And the mother of the detained 17-year-old girl was still in shock when this newspaper visited her yesterday. The woman said that the teen moved from her home a few months ago.
“We had an argument and she moved out and when I saw her back on Mother’s Day she said she living downstairs by her boyfriend and then I told her something and she get vex and she leave again,” the woman said.
She added that she had no idea that her daughter was having a relationship with the retired professor until the teen gave police a statement following her arrest.
“She (17-year-old suspect) said that the man called her and tell her that his wife in the country but she was not at home. He told her what time to go and when she went there she took a (female) friend (the 15-year-old) with her,” the woman said.
The woman added that when the girls got to the man’s home, he asked them to go into the bedroom and take off their clothes. “He was giving them money. He told them he wants to have sex with the two girls, but they refused.”
According to the woman, her daughter told the police that when they refused, the man started to harass them and that’s when the 15-year-old girl texted a friend and a few minutes later, three males barged into the professor’s home.
“She said that they tied him up and they started to pack stuff from his home and then her boyfriend left with one of the boys to get a taxi and she and her friend were waiting at the man’s door. She said while waiting, she heard a strange noise and when she turned back she see this boy put a plastic bag over the man’s face and suffocate him.”
She said that her daughter told the police that they never planned to kill the man but only to rob him.
The woman said that peer pressure got the best of her daughter.
And the mother of the detained 16-year-old boy said that her son became wayward after he started a relationship with the 17-year-old girl who allegedly planned the robbery.
The woman said that she only agreed for the girl to move into a section of her downstairs so that her son would be in her sight.
She said that on Thursday, she went to work and when she got home her son and his older girlfriend were there and everything seemed normal until the police visited their home around midnight.
She later learnt that someone was killed and that her son played a part in it.
“He told the police that his girlfriend told him that the man give her something to drink and then he had sex with her when she became unconscious.”
The woman added that her son said he got angry and decided to go and teach the man a lesson.
“He said that he collected two friends and they went to the house to rob. He said that they tied the man up and he and his friend went to get a taxi and when they went back to the house, they see that the man was dead so all of them got into the car and left the house,” the woman said.
They then went to a house in Sophia with the stolen items.

the trap door.

Two other shots were fired, one of which struck Bacchus on his leg.

This newspaper was told that Bacchus pushed his children to safety and shouted for help and the men made their escape by jumping a backyard fence.

Bacchus is currently a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

An eyewitness told this newspaper that the incident was an attack on the man’s life and not an attempted robbery.

It was explained that the man is a witness in a murder case gaining attention of the courts.

According to the informer Bacchus was threatened that he will not live to testify and as a result he stayed indoors all day Saturday but was shot on Sunday.

Despite the threats made to Bacchus he did not report it to the Police.

Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam said the police are investigating the shooting and confirmed that Bacchus is a witness for the state in a court matter.

However, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum when contacted told Guyana Times that Police are trying to ascertain the motive for the shooting but they are not ruling out a possible attempted robbery.

He noted that from what he was informed, the man was in his home when he heard some noise emanating from a section of the house. As he looked in the direction, he saw someone attempting to remove a sheet of plywood that was used to block the doorway.

Upon seeing this, he shouted for “thief” but in retaliation, the perpetrator discharged a round hitting him to his leg.

In another thread I already pointed out that the PPP have been reading the statistics of just about everything upside down. The PPP assured the public and their supporters that crime was out of control. But the figures show there is a massive drop. This can mean only one thing, and one thing alone.. There was no crime tracking under the PPP, so everything looked far more peaceful on paper. And that paper was the Chronicle, aided by GINA. Now under new management, the real figures are finally coming to light.

Thanks to the quick response from police ranks from the Sparendaam Station, the men are lucky to be alive to face charges for their actions.
The men had earlier followed Marilyn Brumigin all the way from a city bank to her Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara home and pounced on her.
Police said that at about 14:00 hours yesterday, Brumigin was about to enter her home after transacting business at a bank in Georgetown, when she was attacked and held at gunpoint by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, and who had ridden up on a motorcycle.
The woman raised an alarm, but the men took away a bag with a sum of cash.
Divisional Commander Marlon Chapman told Kaieteur News as the men were about to escape, neighbouring residents who had responded to the alarm, including two off-duty policemen, confronted the perpetrators and snatched away the stolen bag with the money.
The two bandits still tried to ride away but were stopped in their tracks when a motorist drove into them, sending them crashing to the ground.
Although, one of the men was armed with a .32 pistol with nine rounds, he had no chance to use it, as they were both swarmed by residents and the two off-duty cops, who gave them an initial thrashing before handing them over to uniformed police ranks who subsequently arrived on the scene.
The bag of cash and the weapon were handed over to the police, and the bandits’ motorcycle was seized.
Commander Chapman said that background checks are being made on the men to see if they have criminal records. Ballistics tests are also being carried out on the weapon that was seized.
Almost two weeks ago a trio who allegedly followed a customer from a city bank was also nabbed. The men have already appeared before a magistrate and were remanded to prison.

Missing Spring Garden farmer found floating in Supenaam

A post mortem examination is expected to be performed sometime on Tuesday on the remains of Harry Dyal Basdeo’s decomposed body which was retrieved some time on Monday with suspected marks, in the Supenaam Creek area.
Dyal went missing last Friday and ever since his relatives have mobilised an intense search for the missing man. An examination to assist in concluding Dyal’s death was prompted after his family revealed that the remains of the deceased bore visible marks which are suggesting he may have taken a fatal blow.
The unmarried 45-year- old is a resident of Spring Gardens but according to information, Dyal farmed at Supenaam Creek several miles away from his home. On Friday, however, his family became increasingly alarmed after Dyal failed to return to his Spring Garden, Essequibo Coast home.
A search was launched for the farmer and it eventually led to the discovery of his decomposed body. Dyal was said to be unmarried without children. The bachelor did farming for a living and would sometimes buy and sell to residents on the Essequibo Coast. Dyal’s boat and engine were also recovered.

The police acting on that information were able to recover the mutilated body in a black plastic bag in a clump of bushes.

She noted that her brother, a known drug addict, was in the habit of threatening the elder Bourne and would repeatedly point out the iron bar in his threats. She even indicated that on one occasion as she attempted to intervene in an argument, the suspect had “chucked” her and threatened her as well.
Rickford Bourne according to reports was on life support at the hospital and eventually succumbed to his injuries at approximately 20:00 hrs on Monday. His daughter told Kaieteur News that she was going to visit her father when she received the dreadful news.
Police have indicated that a post mortem will be done today. They have since arrested Kwame Bourne and have identified the iron bar as the weapon used in the attack. The suspect is due to appear in court on Friday to face a charge of murder.

RK Security Guards crack, lead cops to buried cash and gun

MAY 26, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Two security guards attached to the RK’s Security Service cracked under intense interrogation and led police to recover a stash of cash and a firearm they had reportedly stolen during a staged robbery on Monday night.

The recovered cash and one of the firearms.

The recovered cash and one of the firearms.

The two guards Damion Pearce, 24, and 22-year-old Cleveland Pyle confessed to staging the robbery. They gave investigators information that led to the recovery of the stolen items from a yard at ‘A’ Field Sophia, yesterday.
The cash which amounted to close to three million dollars, along with the firearm, was found in a bucket that was buried in the yard where Damion Pearce lives with his reputed wife, Eulesie Stephens.
It was another major breakthrough for investigators from the Major Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department, working in collaboration with detectives from the Police East Coast Division.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum last night confirmed the success and once again heaped praise on his ranks, who he said worked diligently to crack the case.
He said that both guards and Pearce’s reputed wife are in custody and are assisting with further investigations, while the hunt is on for two other individuals.
The two security guards had claimed that on Monday night they were attacked by a lone gunman who took away a bag containing cash and two handguns, outside the Demerara Bank, Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara branch.
During the incident Pearce was shot in his left foot by the bandit who relieved him of the items just as he was about to make a night deposit at the bank.
Investigators were suspicious from the inception and immediately began questioning the security guards to ascertain the real circumstances surrounding the incident.
The men had told police that about 20:00 hours that night, they were making a night deposit at the bank, when they were attacked by a man armed with a firearm.
The perpetrator shot Pearce to his left foot and took away the night deposit bag which contained cash that had been collected from business places, and two .32 revolvers with 10 rounds, before escaping in a motor car driven by an accomplice.
Although, the guards were armed with another weapon, no one returned fire at the fleeing bandit, arousing the suspicions of investigators.
The injured Pearce was assisted by his partner Pyle and taken to the hospital, abandoning the company car outside the bank.
A senior police source said that investigators began grilling the guards and they eventually confessed to staging the robbery for their personal benefit.
“Imagine a guard taking a shot in his leg just to try to throw the police off. Now he has no money and will be heading to jail,” the police officer said.

Two men shot by licenced firearm holder

MAY 26, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Police have detained a licenced firearm holder who reportedly opened fire on a group of men, injuring two of them, during a confrontation yesterday.

The incident occurred in Kitty and while none of the wounded men received life threatening injuries, the licenced firearm holder got a sound thrashing and had to be rescued by ranks of the Guyana Police Force who were summoned to the scene.
This newspaper understands that the two wounded men were among a group who were offloading a container when the licenced firearm holder drove up and parked his vehicle in a manner that affected the men’s operation.
The group of men became annoyed when the licenced firearm holder refused to remove his vehicle despite repeated requests to do so.
Not realizing that the man was carrying a gun, the men swarmed the licence firearm holder and began raining cuffs and kicks about his body.
Kaieteur News was told that the licenced firearm holder whipped out his gun and fired shots at the men, hitting two of them in the process.
But before he could discharge any more rounds he was swarmed and overpowered by the angry mob and held down until the police arrived.
The two men as well as the licenced firearm holder were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Investigations are continuing.

Four arrested in Berbice marijuana bust

By Clifford Stanley

RANKS of the Number 51 and Springlands police stations have arrested four men and impounded two vehicles following the discovery of nine kilogrammes of marijuana in their proximity during a joint mobile patrol Wednesday night. The find was made at an apparent drop-off site alongside the Number 65 Village Public Road, Region Six.

Reports indicate that the cops were on duty around 21: 00hrs when they received a report that some men in two vehicles had been seen acting in a suspicious manner near a derelict vehicle alongside the Number 65 Village Public Road.

The report stated that a man in a silver-grey Toyota 212 was seen taking out a bulky garbage bag from the trunk of the vehicle and placing it in the derelict vehicle.

A white Toyota Raum motorcar was also present at the scene and after depositing the garbage bag, the man re-entered the Toyota 212 and both vehicles drove off and parked some distance away.

Acting on the information , the policemen promptly approached the men in the two vehicles.

They found the bonnet of the Toyota 212 opened,suggesting that the car had broken down. They also saw a man who seemed to be trying to repair the vehicle.

When questioned, the four men denied any wrongdoing.

The policemen then tested the apparently under-repair-vehicle to see whether it had indeed broken down and found that it started without any difficulty.

This aroused their suspicion that something was amiss.

They searched the four men and the vehicles, but not having found anything incriminating, took the suspects to the derelict vehicle some distance away.

On searching the derelict vehicle, they found a garbage bag containing parcels of what they later determined to be compressed cannabis sativa (marijuana), weighing nine kilogrammes.

The four, including a father and a son were taken into custody while the Toyota 212 and the Raum were impounded.

One Dead, three missing as cutlass pirates strike on the Corentyne

THREE fishing vessels were attacked by pirates just before midnight on Friday, leaving one fisherman dead and three others missing on the Corentyne River.

Captain Seepersaud Persaud

The dead man, identified as 45-year-old Hemchand Sukdeo, called Dread, of #55 Village, was discovered on Saturday afternoon in a fisherman’s seine during the low tide.

Three of his fellow crew members are still missing, while the captain miraculously survived after being thrown overboard.

The captain, Seepersaud Persaud, 43, of Corriverton, said their boat was attacked by five cutlass-wielding pirates, three of whom were masked. He related that they were approximately five miles in the Atlantic Ocean in Surinamese waters when their boat was approached by pirates, who demanded they hand over their catch valued at $140,000.

They complied as four of the pirates boarded their vessel, while another remained on the pirate boat. Seepersaus said his crew was then tied up and transferred onto the pirates’ boat, and he was instructed to take it ashore with the crew as the pirates took their boat.

Seepersaud said that as he was about to move off, the pirates then asked that he throw overboard two of his men, but he refused. Seepersaud related that he was instead thrown overboard by the pirates.

“As we about to move off, them ask me fuh throw ovah two ah me work man, but me seh me nah do dah, and them push me ovah board and drive off.”

Seepersaud said he swam for approximately three hours, until he saw another boat and was rescued him. They then made contact with the Number 66 Fishermen’s Co-op, which sent a boat to take him ashore.

He later learnt that his boat, which is valued at six million dollars, was used to attack two other vessels, and three of his crew members are still missing, and feared dead since the discovery of Sukdeo’s body.

Those missing are Dhanpaul Rampaul of Number 67 Village, a cane harvester who would seek other employment during the out-of-crop season; Dochan Sukra, 54, also called ‘’Butcher’, of Number 55 Village; and another male, identified only as ‘Boyo’.

Police sources have confirmed detaining a boat matching the description of the one used during the pirate attacks, and have in custody five men who were on board at the time. The boat, ‘Sharda SK’, was seen moored at the # 65 Koker when this newspaper was on scene.

Meanwhile, the crew members of two other fishing vessels which were also attacked on Friday night were said to be safe, but could not get ashore because of the low tide.

Teen waitress shot in face at Chinese restaurant

– Worked after school to make ends meet

By Rabindra Rooplall
SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Onika Luke of Lot 1 Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, who would hang up her uniform after school and head for a night job as a waitress to make ends meet, was shot to the face on Friday night after she resisted a gunman’s attempt to rob the Lucky Star Chinese Restaurant in her home village.

Onika Luke

Now a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of Woodlands Hospital, Onika gave the police a description of her assailant in writing on a piece of paper as investigations continue.

The bandit reportedly entered the restaurant at about 22:40 hrs and ordered a meal, but while paying for the meal, the man allegedly held on to Luke’s hands as she was behind the barred-off counter, then he pulled out a firearm and demanded cash. The teen resisted the assailant, and was shot to her chin whilst he made good his escape.

Luke’s brother, Rickford Ranjee, said he received a call minutes before 23:00hrs on Friday night, informing him that his sister had been shot in her hands.

“Then Chiney man himself come home by us and tell me put on my clothes because my sister get shoot in she hand. When I rush down to the hospital, the nurse tell me my sister get shoot in her hand and the bone break, and the bullet fly through her chin and is lodged in her throat,” he explained.

The distressed brother said that, in the presence of two policemen at the hospital, his sister wrote on a piece of paper the description of the man who had shot her. She told her brother that the person came into the restaurant and ordered a half-portion vegetable fried rice, and she collected the money from the man. It was when she reached for the drawer that the man snatched her by her jersey neck and pulled her into the grillwork barring the counter.

“Then like when he point the gun to shoot her, she tried boxing it away and the bullet (flew) through her hands, hit her chin and (got stuck) in her throat,” Ranjee explained.
Luke attends St. John’s College, and the brother said it was only three months ago that she decided to start working daily after returning home from school to assist with paying her own bills and look after her development. She would normally work from 17:00hrs to 22:00hrs.

Ranjee said the supermarket adjacent to the restaurant was robbed last year, and a Chinese man had been shot in his leg in that incident.

Ranjee said the same person who had shot his sister had recently threatened to kidnap her after he had noticed her going home late at night. He said she detailed all this to him in writing on a piece of paper on Saturday morning.

She said that the shooter has a tattoo to his neck; it is someone she was accustomed to seeing about the place, he explained.

Residents in the area said the restaurant opened for business almost four months ago.

Seventy-year-old Constant was robbed of his cherished gold chain and a symbolic ring by a man known as “Quarter,” and although the soldier tried valiantly to retrieve the items, his younger assailant managed to escape.
And although police investigators have been able to ascertain the identity of the thief, up to press time there was no word of him being apprehended.
Constant, who is in Guyana to celebrate the country’s Golden Independence anniversary in keeping with a pledge he made 50 years ago, said that on Monday morning, he left the city hotel he was staying at, to go down to a bank to exchange some foreign currency.
He did not get to complete the transaction, so he decided to go sightseeing around the Stabroek Market area, where he began taking photographs.
“The next thing I knew was that someone had grabbed my shirt from behind and pulled it, he said demonstrating the action while speaking to this newspaper.
In the process, the thief had grabbed his gold chain to which was attached a diamond-crested ring.
“As he pulled it, he came towards me and I hit him….it was more out of temper, because I saw his face for about a second and I just punched him to the side of the head and he was gone,” the former British soldier related.
He ran after the fleeing man, shouting “Stop! Thief!” while chasing him towards the Stabroek Market.
Constant gave up the chase after running over some wooden planks and being barefooted, the task was onerous.
He was sure that if the odds were a little better he would have caught the thief, who disappeared into the crowded Stabroek Market.
“I thought, I’ve still got my iPad, I’ve got my money, I thought it’s not worth it.”
Fighting to hold back tears, Constant said that the stolen items mean a lot to him.
“My wife bought me the gold chain….she bought me a gold chain before she died and I put her wedding ring and her engagement ring on it and it’s gone,” the former soldier lamented.
Although he spoke of one man, Constant said that he was told by the police that the perpetrators were two youths.
He said that “a very nice taxi driver” came up and identified one of the thieves.
“He said ‘I know that man.” ….he said his (the thief’s) name was Quarter,” the British National recalled.
He said that he eventually picked up his slippers that he left behind while chasing after the thief, and after putting them back on, he made his way to the Brickdam Police Station where he reported the matter.
Constant told Kaieteur News that after speaking to the relevant officer, he was taken back to the Stabroek Market where the information was passed on to some plainclothes ranks who were already there.
A few minutes later, the investigators sought to obtain footage from a surveillance camera located in the vicinity where Constant was robbed.
He was the taken back to the station where he gave a detailed statement.
“My chain was thick round gold, British gold, nine carat. But it’s the rings, my wife’s engagement ring was a ruby diamond cluster,” Constant said.
Monday’s experience is a stark contrast to some experiences that Constant had a few days earlier.
He spoke of being shepherded back to his hotel with all his medals by a man he befriended and who even bought him a few beers.
But despite his loss, Constant insisted that he will spend out the rest of his holiday and hopes that by the time it is done, the police would have captured the thief.
A senior police official, when contacted vowed that the Force will leave no stone unturned to capture the thief, who he said would pay a huge price for bringing Guyana into disrepute.

yesterday morning.
The dead woman was identified as 49-year-old Latchmin Shivpujan called ‘Radika,’ of 3233 Crane Old Road, West Coast Demerara. The victim was a security guard attached to the Kalibur Investigative and Security Services.
Information reaching this publication is that screams were heard coming from Shivpujan’s tiny one-bedroom apartment sometime around midnight on Monday.
Although details of the incident remain sketchy, Kaieteur News has learnt that the woman lived alone; she occupied the lower flat of a two-storey house but was frequently visited by male friends; one of whom is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
A resident living a short distance from where the incident occurred recalled that the police were called in during the night, but they only responded “at day clean.”
“You know how long the police get call, but dem only come till around (6:00 am) the next morning. By then she (Shivpujan) done stiff,” the resident stated.
The mother of two was found lying in a pool of blood. The victim bore several injuries including three stab wounds about her body. Shortly after the police arrived, Shivpujan’s body was removed from the apartment and transported to a nearby funeral parlour.
When Kaieteur News visited the scene of the crime, neighbours were reluctant to speak of the incident. However, a few residents described Shivpujan as ‘a friendly guard lady” who worked a short distance from where she lived.

“I can’t tell you anything much about what happened to her last night, but I know she used to work security at the Lands and Surveys Office on the Public Road,” one woman stated. When contacted, Shivpujan’s former co-workers expressed shock at the news. They described the woman as an easy-going, chatty and friendly person, but noted she hardly spoke of her relatives.
“She only said that she has one sister who lives at Hague, (West Coast Demerara) and two children living outside (overseas).”
At the sister’s Hague, West Coast Demerara residence, relatives noted that they only learnt of the murder via the media.
Mahadai Singh, the woman‘s sister, told this publication that she had not spoken to Shivpujan for nearly two decades. Singh said that she and her sister were estranged because she did not agree with her (Shivpujan’s) lifestyle.
The woman claimed that several years ago, her sister had been living in Venezuela, but returned to Guyana with her two children.
“She come from Venezuela wid de two children and was staying by me, then she suddenly pick up sheself and lef’ de children behind and never look back.”
Singh said that she cared for the children for two months before she came to the realization that her sister was not coming back to get her children, hence she sent them back to Venezuela to live with their father. Singh said that since then her sister had shut her out of her life. She said Shivpujan refused to have anything to do with her eight siblings and other family members.
“Me had to send dem (children) back, but she been vex and seh that me tell people that she abandon she children, but me had no choice, she want to live she life and me can’t stop she, but me couldn’t look at the children. Me had me own children to look after.”

The last thing I heard about she is that she was working at a security service and living in Crane. I can’t even tell you what she house look like, ‘cause me never been at she,” Singh added.
But although she did not share a close relationship with her sister, the woman noted that she is still curious about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Last evening, a police source confirmed that a male suspect, also a security officer, has been taken into custody for the murder. The suspect is said to have shared an intimate relationship with the woman prior to the incident.

Firemen caught with stolen items from Traffic Chief’s burnt house

Four firemen have been handed over to the police after they were implicated in the theft of items from the home of Traffic Chief Dion Moore, where they had gone to extinguish a fire on Monday night.

The Traffic Chief’s house at Belfield, East Coast Demerara.

The men were detained after a cellular phone that was stolen from the Traffic Chief’s house at Belfield, East Coast Demerara, was found under the seat of the fire tender they were in.
For a while now, residents have been complaining that they have been losing items from their homes after firefighters would have carried out work there, but no one was actually found culpable.
The suspicions were manifested yesterday.
Police Commander Marlon Chapman told this newspaper that firefighters were summoned to Moore’s house to tackle a fire. While there, they had to enter the building to carry out their work. When they were done and Moore examined the interior of his house, he noticed that two cellular phones were missing. He contacted the senior fireman at the scene and made enquiries.
The firemen denied removing the items and were allowed to leave, thinking that they had gotten away with their nefarious act. However, soon after leaving the scene, their vehicle was stopped and searched and one of the cell phones was found under the driver’s seat.
Of course the actions of the firemen have caused great embarrassment to the Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle and the rest of his ranks.
Gentle in an invited comment expressed disgust over the incident, especially since the actual firefighting work was done excellently.
“They have tarnished the work that they went to do at the traffic chief’s house,” Gentle said.
He explained that after the phone was found, the matter was reported to the fire service and the ranks placed into the custody of their superiors, who conducted an internal investigation.
“We have finished our internal investigations and we are handing them over to the police,” the Fire Chief stated.
Gentle confirmed that there were four firefighters on the truck in which the stolen phone was found.
“I’m not saying that all of them did it, but somebody had to be responsible.”
The fire chief emphasised that there is no place in his organisation for persons who will destroy the good name of the Guyana Fire Service, and as such, his administration has dealt with the manner in the appropriate way. He said that what is most disgusting is that the act was perpetrated on a member of a sister Joint Service organization.
“As long as you steal, it is a criminal offence and I have to maintain the integrity of the 500-plus ranks under me. Public trust must be maintained,” the fire chief declared.

Former British soldier Edward Constant demonstrates how the thief grabbed him and snatched off his jewellery.

Former British soldier Edward Constant demonstrates how the thief grabbed him and snatched off his jewellery.

Major disgrace.

I second this.

Maybe the thief is one of those criminals that Granger Pardon for the Jubilee. I read about the British soldier's visit for the 50th anniversary, not knowing he is returning to get robbed. This is Global embarrassment.

Man kills wife at workplace

By Rabindra Rooplall
THIRTEEN years of marriage ended in bloodshed Wednesday night after Candacy Pitt, called “Cindy,” was hacked to death by her husband Athlone Pitt while she was at work as a security guard at Bygeval Secondary School. The 31-year-old woman, who had no children, was on duty at the school located behind her Chelsea Park, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara residence.

The depressed mother Evonne Andrews

The depressed mother Evonne Andrews

According to a police report, she worked as a security guard at the school and was attacked about 21:45hrs by her husband at her workplace where she was dealt multiple chops about her body.

However, the police noted that he first attacked and chopped her cousin, security guard Brenda Thomas, 51, of Chelsea Park who had denied him entry into the compound to see his wife. Mrs. Pitt and her cousin Thomas were both on duty at the time of the attack.

They were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Mrs. Pitt was pronounced dead on arrival, while Brenda Thomas was admitted. The husband, Athlone Pitt surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

The dead woman’s mother Evonne Andrews said her daughter began working almost two months ago at the school as a security guard. She explained that her daughter who lived in a neighbouring building would spend most of the time with the family.

“Her husband was a lazy drunkard who hardly worked, he was a driver. I can’t remember the last time when he worked, he would normally be drinking all over the place and would threaten her whenever she is over here,” Mrs. Andrews, a mother of three, said.

However, the couple never sought counselling, Mrs. Andrews said, but her daughter would attend church and hope for the best.

The tearful mother said she is seeking justice from the police and the courts, since such an act is barbaric, considering that the family was kind and decent towards him.

“How do you describe a person who you fetch food from your parents’ house to give, they give you land to build a house, you treat him like a son, how do you describe a person like that when they turn around and kill your child. There are no words to express it,” a cousin of the deceased, Mrs. Pitt Shaundelle Singh said sadly.

“He getting free everything, free water, free current, he getting from what ‘Cindy’ father and mother working for, the man is a waste.”

The cousin further said that on each occasion that “Cindy” gets a cellphone her husband smashed it up out of a jealous rage. She can’t even communicate with her family on Facebook. “He always threatening she with a gun, we don’t know if it’s real or toy, he always threatening her to kill her or her family.”

Singh explained that the security guard Brenda Thomas who was chopped had spoken to Mr. Pitt about his unwarranted attack and behaviour when dealing with his wife. “I talk to him too, I told him off and I hear he say he would have killed me. He was a two-faced person, he pretending in front of his wife and behind her back he always talk foolishness.”

She said that Mr. Pitt always was a jealous and insecure man because his wife was beautiful and simple.

“The man is so stupid, if she wanted to leave she could have, because she had no children to remain in the relationship for any reason, and she could have packed and move because in 13 years they had no children,” she emphasised.

The cousin added that she took Mrs. Pitt to the hospital to inquire about pregnancy options but it was never followed up because it appeared as if the husband was the problem. “I use to tell her she is getting old and it would be nice to have a child, he always drinking and damaging himself and doing everything to make the woman life hell.”

She disclosed that Mr. Pitt six months ago did a surgery for hernia and his wife and relatives aided and assisted all they could during the process.
“How can he turn around and chop a woman who loved him so much,” Mrs. Singh questioned. “He had to plan what he would have done because he didn’t kill her when she was home, because he knew people would have dealt with him severely so he did it when she was at work.”
She said after committing the act, Mr. Pitt had pulled a hoodie over his head and quickly jumped on a bicycle and made his way to the police station before residents and relatives caught him. “If he had walked, he wouldn’t have reach the police station alive…He does threaten to kill her mother and people in the family; that is why she does go home back with he, and try to be nice to him. But now, look what happened.”
The dead woman’s sister, Isabelle Andrews, said every night for the past two weeks she saw Mr. Pitt walking with a cutlass in his hand going at the school compound threatening his wife and terrorising her outside the school compound.

“He had said he would have killed my father and mother and the entire family. He treated her very bad and this is the result – he even assaulted her at a wedding one night because she dance with a relative,” she said.

According to relatives, “Cindy” was always jovial and smiling and never showed anyone a bad face, although she was in an abusive relationship.

Bandits tie up guards, rob M&M Snackette of $$millions

The entire ordeal was recorded on surveillance cameras. The footage showed the men, with pieces of cloth wrapped around their faces, going through each drawer in the fast food outlet’s main office, hunting for cash.
It is unclear if the workers who were tied up provided the men with the location of the office but in the footage, the men knew exactly where they needed to go and which lock they had to break to get to the cash.
This transpired around 01:40 hrs on Wednesday. The men gained entry into the compound by cutting a mesh fence at the back of the compound. Once inside, they pounced on the two construction workers who were sleeping under a shed at the back of the building.
The bandits then went to the front of the building and dragged the two security guards to the back where they tied everyone.
While one of the armed men kept an eye on the workers, the remaining four were seen rummaging the office. The workers were not injured.
One of the Directors, Mahendra Mookram said that when the bandits left the property, the workers managed to free themselves and called him.
“When I come here, the whole office ransacked. The place where the money was kept was broken and then we started looking at the footage. Four persons were seen in the video, but one was with the workers,” Mookram said.
The businessman said that his losses amount to millions, and it would certainly affect the ongoing construction at the entity. “Three days’ sales and money for construction work were there.”
“Basically, they cut all the locks with nippers and crowbars. They had to cut about five locks. There are two doors to the entrance, one mesh and grill, and then the glass door,” Mookram explained.
He said that the men walked with all the necessary tools to carry out the attack. At one time, the footage showed the men as they left and later returned with additional tools—a nipper.
They all wore gloves as they went about searching for cash.
Last November, bandits carried out a similar attack at the establishment.
According to the businessman, they entered the compound and made a hole in the wall where they gained entry and escaped with cash.
No one was arrested then and no one has been arrested for Wednesday’s robbery. Investigations are ongoing.

Two suspected cocaine mule recruiters were on Friday brought before the court for recruiting Safraz Jalaladeen to traffic over 6.04 kilograms of cocaine out of Guyana, and appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann

McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Rolston Bacchus, called “Biggs” and Mark Sawyers, called “Marco” both denied they recruited Jalaladeen to traffic the cocaine between April 1 and May 19, 2016.

Reports indicate that ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) were able to finger the men after Jalaladeen was busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) with the drug concealed in milk packets in two suitcases.

Jalaladeen appeared before the same Magistrate two weeks ago and was sentenced to four years imprisonment for the crime and has since been cooperating with (CANU) ranks in the investigation.

Bacchus was further slapped with recruiting Kathleen DeFlorimonte and Odessa Pollard, between July and November 2015 to traffic 12.34 Kilograms of cocaine out of Guyana.

According to Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford-Thompson, Bacchus denied the charge. Reports are that on November 5, 2015, Pollard was slated to depart on a Caribbean Airlines flight destined to Trinidad and Tobago when she was busted with 12.348 kilogram of cocaine.

Prosecutor Thompson disclosed that the drug was concealed in Kerrygold milk packets. Pollard told officers it is her mother-in-law, DeFlorimonte who had packed her suitcase and told her that diamonds were contained in

They were charged before the court and are currently on trial at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

CANU officers noted that it is due to the two women’s statements that they were able to arrest of Bacchus who had been long under their surveillance.

The Prosecution pointed out that Sawyer is no stranger to the court or the drug world, telling the court that the 26-year-old resides at Lot 521 Dazzle Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, and has similar matters pending at the Providence and Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts.

Bail for the men was strongly objected to by the Prosecutor –Bacchus being a flight risk and Sawyer’s previous involvement in such matters.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded the duo until June 21 and transferred the joint matter to Courts Five and Three respectively.

By Alva Solomon

A LOWLANDS, East Coast Demerara mother is worried about the safety of her teenage daughter who was allegedly assaulted by a man in the community on Monday night.According to the woman, her daughter was on her way home around 19:00 hrs on Monday when she was attacked. She said the young woman, who completed secondary schooling last year, had just disembarked a bus close to the “Hope turn” opposite the Hope Secondary School, when a man approached her, asking for directions.
The man told the young lady that he was looking for someone called “Mark” and even provided a description of the individual.
The victim told the Guyana Chronicle that the man continued to follow her into the dark street even after she indicated to him that she was unaware of who “Mark” was. She said that after crossing a narrow bridge at the entrance to Lowlands, the man grabbed her and placed his arm around her throat.
The young lady said that she tried to fight off the man. “He vice me and I don’t know what happened after,” she recounted. She said she woke up in a nearby cemetery which runs parallel to the main road on entry to Lowlands. She said that the man bound her hands behind her while he tore a piece of her garment and tied her mouth.
“The place was dark and I tried to call for help,” she said. She recalled that the man spoke to her “as if he know me.”
The young lady added that after sitting on the ground for several minutes, the man told her that he was ready to leave and he left her sitting in the cemetery.
“He walk away and I started running out the cemetery and end up on the Line Top,” she recalled.
She said that after walking the dark Railway Embankment, residents in the area came to her assistance and telephoned her mother around 21:00hrs.
The young lady’s mother said that she immediately took her daughter to the Cove and John Police Station where a report was made. She said that a detailed description of the man was given to the ranks there and according to her, one of the officers said the assailant is known to the police.
According to the mother, she subsequently took her daughter, who was in a muddied state, to a doctor; the medical report indicated that the young lady was physically but not sexually assaulted. On Tuesday, the teen returned to the Cove and John Police Station where additional information was recorded by the ranks.
“I can’t sleep, because I could have been motherless and that person is still out there,” the distressed mother told this newspaper. The Guyana Chronicle understands that the assailant was seen in the Lowlands area on several occasions prior to Monday’s incident and according to a police source, the man was once arrested on several allegations of rape.
Reports are that in one instance, a young woman whom the man attacked, left the country out of fear.
Residents said yesterday that the assailant rides a Honda CG motorcycle and he would frequent the village of Victoria, which is located near Lowlands.
However, to date, the police are yet to arrest him, even though he is a known character to law enforcement. As such, the mother wants the Police Force to act swiftly in apprehending him, given that the safety of her daughter is at risk.

Reporters shot at while chasing bandit …another robbed, beaten

IT was chaos in the city on Friday afternoon when two journalists decided to chase a gunman who had just robbed a United States (US) based Guyanese man in the vicinity of the St. George’s Cathedral. The journalists who were involved in the high-speed chase have been identified as Kurt Campbell and Iva Wharton. They were shot at by the gunman, but fortunately escaped unhurt. The Guyana Chronicle understands that the two media operatives decided to pursue the yellow get-away taxi with licence plate number HC3085 after witnessing the robbery.

This newspaper understands that he had just left a city bank and was walking along Carmichael Street when the armed man pounced on him. Smith put up a fight, but was overpowered by the bandit, who managed to escape with $90,000.
According to Campbell, he and Wharton were driving in the vicinity at the time and decided to pursue the vehicle. Campbell recalled that they drove through several traffic lights in order to stay close behind the speeding car and immediately made contact with ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, who alerted police patrols.
But things took a turn for the worse when the armed man, who was at this time wearing a mask, exited the car at Crown and Oronoque Streets and opened fire on the vehicle the journalists were driving. However, the journalists did not stop and continued to trail the men when a police patrol subsequently arrived and took over the chase. Both Campbell and Wharton were commended for their bravery by Commander Hicken.

Miner stabbed to death by cousin

A 26-YEAR-OLD resident of Cambelltown, Mahdia, Region Eight was on Monday stabbed to death by his cousin after they got into a heated argument while drinking at a bar there.

The incident reported occurred around 04:00 hrs.“They dey all de drinking and he and he cousin start cuss out one another about each other mother. These boys are two sisters’ children and the argument got very heated,” an eyewitness told the Guyana Chronicle.

The eyewitness, who hailed from the same Amerindian community and requested anonymity, said the incident can divide the families involved and the community as well.

“Nobody wan talk because dem ain’t want no problems as this is a tense situation,” the eyewitness said. The suspect and the victim reportedly live a few houses apart.

Residents, while expressing sadness over the situation, were reluctant to publicly speak on the matter, but they called on the authorities to clamp down on drug and alcohol abuse in the community.

According to reports, the alleged murderer reportedly came out of the backdam the day before with several of his co-workers.

The eyewitness said the victim and the murderer, along with others, were drinking when a heated argument started.

“They were arguing and busing really bad when Romel decided that he will walk away. He left the bar and was walking when, without warning this guy (cousin) came up behind him and stabbed him to his right side.”

The eyewitness added: “The police could have caught this guy had they responded in a very timely manner, but it’s as though because we are living in the bush (Madiha) everybody thinks that we should be treated anyhow. This isn’t right as you can see the very short distance of the police station from here.”

Several other residents echoed similar sentiments.

After committing the act, the alleged assailant reportedly got into a bus that was heading out of Madiha and has not been seen since.
Residents believe that the suspect might be hiding out in one of the camps as he knows the interior terrain well.

Romel was the fifth of six children and used to live with his mother Josepha Alfred, 53. When this newspaper visited, his mother was in a state of shock.

She related that she has been hearing different versions of the incident that led to the stabbing.

“I am too weak to even know what happened as I am hurting badly,” the woman said.

Alfred related that her son “was a good child and to loose he like this ain’t easy” as she wept.

Village Toshao Ivan Pio said he is very disappointed about what happened, noting that the killing was a senseless act.

“This is a case of yet another life being stuffed out senselessly. It’s time that the youths realise that drinking and smoking will only make their lives more complicated and challenging. I continue to speak to them as the toshao but unfortunately it’s as though they are not listening as every day several young men can be seen drinking all day, thus resulting in increased social problems,” he said.

Police are investigating the murder.

“They nearly clean me out,” said the man as he showcased on his phone photographs of how bandits left his place “trashed” as they had removed items of value from his Lot 10 Bougainville, Farm, East Bank Demerara home.
In addition to removing appliances, the bandits also broke into three vaults to gain access to millions of dollars in jewellery. They even carried away Jaisingh’s dentures and underwear. The bandits, according to Jaisingh, also took a quantity of foreign liquor and even drank a few beers and snacked while carrying out their dastardly act.
“They drink; they even made cheese sandwiches and what they couldn’t eat they just throw away in the house,” the man related.
During a visit to the Saffon Street, Georgetown office of this publication, Jaisingh in the company of his wife, Babita Kumarie, said that while he lived abroad for a number of years he returned eight years ago.
The re-migrant, however, would travel to the US for short periods. It was during a recent visit to the US that his home was invaded. According to the man he and his family (including two children) left for the US on May 25 with the intent of returning on June 2.
But something untoward was observed a few days after the family left. According to Jaisingh, he was informed that his newspaper man, while dropping off papers, last week Tuesday discovered that his front door and gate were ajar. The newspaper man relayed his concerns to a neighbour who in turn got someone to make contact with Jaisingh in the US.

According to Jaisingh, on learning of the development he contacted his maid who visited the home and reported the break-in to the police. The man informed that although no one is ever asked to stay in the house, this is the first time that such an incident has ever occurred.
Upon his return, the man said that he was shocked to see his house ransacked. The man said that he observed that the bandits got access by removing the bolts of a grill in order to get through a window. The man said that a lock on the front door was also broken. This might have been how the bandits exited with their booty.
“They probably tried to carry out the vaults but couldn’t and so they broke them right in the house…they couldn’t open the door big enough to carry out the television otherwise those might have been gone too,” said Jaisingh.
According to the man, the police, as part of their investigation, visited his home took photographs and dusted for finger prints. “They told me that they think they got at least three sets of finger prints,” said Jaisingh who expressed disappointment that his DVR for his Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) was destroyed by the bandits.
“They cut the DVR and they put it in a sink and they open the water on it…the police said that they would have to check it in the crime lab,” said Jaisingh who revealed that a jacket was left behind which he hopes could help police to determine who the perpetrators are.
While the incident has stirred Jaisingh suspicion, he noted that he will give the police force a fair chance to solve the case.

Ruthless thieves killing Dorie’s house-ownership dreams

By Telesha Ramnarine

SIXTY-four-year-old Ramdai Janet Dorie could not hold back the tears as she reflected on how hard she worked to save every dollar towards building her own home. These were not tears of joy however – they represented the anguish she felt in her heart over those who have been ruthlessly stealing materials off of her house. Dorie’s house is located at Block B, Mocha Road Third Bridge, Herstelling Housing Scheme, on the East Bank Demerara; an area that is still being developed so there are tall bushes, no street

lights and few houses that people have actually occupied.

Since there is hardly anything that Ms. Dorie can do about this unfortunate situation and she cannot think of any agency that might be willing to provide any practical assistance to her; she then resorted to writing to President David Granger and to a few news agencies, including the Guyana Chronicle.

In addition, another option she explored was finding a company that may be able to install a security system at her house that can monitor the activities there when she is not around. This proved too costly and Dorie had no choice but to abandon the idea.

The elderly woman, in an interview at the Chronicle on Tuesday, expressed her hopelessness in tears, along with some amount of optimism that something good may come out of the fact that her plight is being highlighted.

Dorie is eager to have the house completed, having saved enough to secure a bank loan with which she started works. But the project is stalled every time the thieves break in.

$1.6M in LOSSES
For the four times that the bandits have broken in so far, Dorie estimates her losses to be around $1.6M. “Many other persons have the same problem in the area. About two streets away from me, a woman lost 52 sacks of cement. I’m confused at the moment. I’m trying to see how much I can save in the meantime so I can resume work.”

The last time the bandits struck was on the night of the jubilee celebrations and after the police were summoned, they told Dorie that they could not obtain fingerprints as they were smudged. “They caught one of the thieves but the people in the area don’t want to come forward; they don’t want to become a target.”

SAVING FOR 20 YEARS
Although Dorie is an educator, poet, writer, author, and ardent sports personality who has played cricket at an international level, she said she currently sells a few items on the streets, including clothing, to make a living.

“Sometimes I don’t buy clothes and food for myself. I make sacrifices like the old people say, ‘Cut your eye and tie your belly.’ I sell little things on the streets. Sometimes I help a friend do some work and she gives me some money. I have been saving, saving all my money and I went to the bank and they gave me a loan so I was able to build my house.”

Dorie is also a diabetic and has issues with her cholesterol. “I have to pay for my own medical bills and I don’t go in anyone’s way to beg or thief. I work assiduously to save my money. I have been saving for the house over 20 years and working very hard. If you see my hands; they are hard, corny.”

Meanwhile, in a letter to the editor, Dorie said in part that she worked along with the contractor through blood, sweat and tears until thieves started stealing doors, windows, and many other items off of the house.

PLEA
“The stress has now become extremely unbearable. Apart from losing materials, risking to lose my house to the bank, my life is at risk for I am a senior citizen who has numerous medical conditions. In addition, I have no husband, no children, and even no neighbour. Only bushes and more bushes and I am desperate!

“People are seeing but are helpless, since there is no telephone line, no street light, and only bushes where thieves take refuge. I had to put on my own street light and should you visit me, you can feel the hauntedness around the area.

“During the day, you can see a lot of strange faces ‘susing’ out their victims. It seems as though they speculate during the day and they strike during the night with their waiting vehicles. It is alleged that they sell stolen articles to those who are building. As such, I suggest that heavier penalties be levied to those buyers.

“I call upon all those in position to look into this matter as early as possible. Upon reading this letter, I wish that someone may call me and see how they can help, for I have lost far more than I can afford to deal with the bank. I am desperate. Please. I plead for help.”

Hijackers beat taxi driver, car recovered

A GEORGETOWN taxi was Tuesday night hijacked and the driver severely beaten; the car was later found abandoned in Plum Park, Sophia. Two persons who were in a house opposite to where the vehicle was discovered were detained by the police for questioning.
The driver of the car, a Toyota Allion with licence plate number HC 6253, was identified as 44-year-old Gladwyn Brandis of 1170 Pigeon Place, South Ruimveldt Park. He is attached to the Green Ice Taxi Service.

According to reports, the taxi was seen parked on the roadside around 20:00 hrs and residents became suspicious after noticing it there for hours.
Wednesday morning, upon closer inspection, it was discovered that there was an injured man inside the vehicle and a call was made to the taxi base, which in turn contacted the police.
The police subsequently arrived and discovered a muddied, bewildered and injured Brandis. The father of five was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.
At the scene where the car was abandoned, there were blood marks on a large brick and drops of blood were seen leading to a nearby canal as if Brandis was dragged there after being beaten.
Police are working on a theory that two men accosted Brandis in his vehicle and after realising what was happening, he pelted his keyless remote car starter out the window causing the vehicle to automatically shut down on the roadway since it was discovered in “D” gear. The men, after beating him in the head, then dragged him towards a nearby canal where they threw him hoping that he would have drowned. They then walked away from the scene. He managed to crawl back into his vehicle where he was discovered without his cellphone and car keys.
Residents in the area recalled seeing two men at the vehicle but they later walked away, leaving the car behind.
According to fellow drivers of the service, Brandis has been working for the Green Ice taxi service for almost a decade and he usually does not work in the nights nor pick up random passengers.
“Whoever he picked up was not assigned by the base, because the base has a record of all pick-ups,” one driver said.
Taxi drivers of the Green Ice base are willing to support the police to apprehend the perpetrators.
According to the injured driver’s wife, Nicola Brandis, she last spoke to her husband at 15:30hrs Tuesday after he left home. She said as the night stepped in, she became worried, since he was supposed to attend a cricket game at the National Stadium and when she called at about 21:30 hrs, she realised his cell phone was turned off.
“This [Wednesday] morning I started making an alarm after I didn’t see him home; his brother started looking around and he received a call stating that he was found in Sophia and badly beaten, a lot of lacerations [cuts] to the head,” she said.
After receiving that dreadful information, Mrs. Brandis said she rushed to hospital in time to see her husband being taken out of the police vehicle. “He was covered in mud all over, his entire face was swollen and he was slipping in and out of consciousness.”
When questioned if her husband was ever a victim of hijacking before, she said not to her knowledge, this was the first occasion.

THE police are investigating the gruesome murder of 23-year-old mechanic, Puranand Andrew Baljit, who was fatally stabbed several times while in his bedroom at Lot 57 Timehri, East Bank Demerara, on Thursday night.According to reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle, the perpetrator (s) apparently grabbed him by the neck through his bedroom window and stabbed him several times about the body and in the region of the heart.

His father and stepmother heard loud screams coming from the room but could not gain access since his door was locked. They subsequently managed to get inside and found him in a bloodied state.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital after being taken there by his stepmother, Simone Baljit. Detectives spent the entire day combing the area and taking statements based on the circumstances under which the body was discovered. They also recovered a 12-inch knife from the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.
Divisional Commander Clifton Hicken said they are working on a lead. Father of the dead man, Harichand Baljit, known as ‘Jackie,’ recalled hearing his son screaming but could not get into the room, since the door was locked.
He then exited the house, climbed through his son’s bedroom window and found him lying in a pool of blood. The young man’s window is not grilled and is located on the northern section of the flat concrete house.
One of the theories by investigators is that the perpetrator(s) grabbed him by the head while he was sitting next to the window and stabbed him several times before escaping on foot.
Residents in the area said they learnt of the stabbing after 22:00hrs and decided to search the area in the hope of finding the attacker. Described as a quiet and isolated individual with few friends, one resident said that Baljit was always easygoing and was always seen on his cellphone texting away.
“Sometimes even if he is on his bicycle, he was on his phone; he also fixes cellphones for people in his quiet time when he is not doing mechanic work,” one resident related.
A visit to the scene revealed that there was a fresh booth print in a mud trail that led to the public road. The police discovered that a concrete block was used for the person to climb on in order to gain full access to Baljit’s window, while there were cellphones and strands of female hair in his room.
Residents believe that the attacker(s) know the young man personally. “He could not fight anyone who grabbed him from the back, he is a little guy and whoever did it take advantage of him.”
One visibly upset resident said, “We have a lot of youths in the area in Soesdyke and Timehri who do not do anything but smoke drugs all day. Police should have locked all of them up until the investigation finish, we need help in these villages to get jobs or put these youth to work somewhere.”
The young mechanic operated from his father’s property, where the murder took place.

Family of thieves spread misery at Good Hope

– car stolen

Michael Basdeo of Good Hope Village on the East Coast of Demerara got the shock of his life when he got out of bed at 05.00 hrs yesterday and found that his house was emptied of valuables and his car was missing.
Noticing also that his back door was open, Basdeo said that he immediately picked up a cutlass and headed downstairs.
Basdeo showed this publication the gap in a window where the burglars had removed three panes.
Basdeo indicated that he raised an alarm in the street but no one responded to his calls for help. This he intimated was because the “Salt Fish” gang would normally use sleeping gas to put their intended victims out cold.
The gang he said, is a family of thieves, who have been doing these types of burglaries for years. According to him, he noted that the thieves robbed six houses in the same street in one night.
Basdeo continued that he rounded up some friends and searched the village but saw no sign of his car or the thieves. He then made a report at the Vigilance Police Station.
He said that detectives lifted prints from the point of entry and a window pane that was left behind.
He stated that after the detectives left, acting upon a hunch, he went to Annandale, East Coast Demerara, where the gang resides, and enquired from the villagers about their whereabouts.

He eventually found his car abandoned in Market Street, Annandale after it was crashed into about six market stands. When this newspaper visited the man’s home, the car was parked under the house and was severely damaged.
After Basdeo discovered his car, he summoned the police and together they went to the home of the suspected thieves. Upon searching the premises they subsequently discovered several of the stolen articles and more loot from other houses.
Basdeo said that the gang comprised about 10 siblings whose ages range from 18-25 and opined that their mother condones their criminal activities.
The police reportedly arrested the mother of the “Salt Fish” gang but the main perpetrators are still at large.
Basdeo told Kaieteur News that while he was able to recover two laptops, some of the other articles are missing, including his flat screen television.
He vowed to take this matter to the highest level in pursuit of justice and compensation.
“My car is how I am able to provide for my family,” he lamented.

Shafur Alli, 27, of Lot 27 La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara and Lazena Imrazie, 22, of Lot 8 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara are accused of having 9.044 kilograms of cocaine in their possession on June 8, last, for the purpose of trafficking.
According to reports, ranks of the Police Narcotic Branch intercepted and seized the cocaine in a cargo shipment of frozen fish at the airport. Court facts revealed that the defendants declared 33 boxes of fish to be exported. Routine checks were done on the cargo by the ranks and the cocaine was found concealed inside of the seafood.
Alli and his sister are being represented by Attorneys Peter Hugh and Bernard DaSilva.
Both lawyers made applications for their clients to be released on reasonable bail citing that police have no evidence against them.
The Attorneys are claiming that Alli and Imrazie had no knowledge or possession of the prohibited drug. Hugh told the court that Alli rents a fish plant that is operated by a third party and asserted that he plays no part in the processing of the fish.
Hugh pleaded with Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to consider bail for the duo citing the fact that the police file is still incomplete and that no indications were given to the court as to when the file will be completed.
Hugh said that the female defendant was merely clearing a package on the day in question.

Shafur Alli

During his address to the court, DaSilva also pleaded for bail to be granted to Imrazie, because she had not signed any declaration form associated with the alleged narcotic shipment.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones strongly objected to bail for the two. He pointed out that no special reasons were provided by the defence counsels for bail to be considered by the court. Jones said that Imrazie provided conflicting addresses.
Jones explained that at the time of the woman’s arrest she told police she was residing at the same address as her brother. The Prosecutor stressed that there is a likelihood that she might not return to court for trial if released on bail.
But Attorney DaSilva explained that the housewife would frequently visit her brother’s house but has her matrimonial home located at Goed Fortuin, where she resides with her husband and five-month-old baby.
According to the lawyers, none of the defendants have previous or pending matters before the court.
Prosecutor Jones indicated that investigations are still ongoing in relation this matter.
His bail objections were upheld by the Chief Magistrate who ordered that the defendants be remanded to prison until July 7, when the matter will be called for report and fixtures.

Businessman accused of bribing police to release seized narcotics

– released on $200,000 bail

A businessman was yesterday charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after he allegedly offered police a bribe to secure the release of narcotics seized.
Tazim Gafoor, of Menzies Street, Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara is accused of committing the offence on June 8, at Craig, East Bank Demerara.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $200,000 bail.
Attorney Glenn Hanoman told the court that his client operates an automotive store at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara. The Attorney petitioned for Gafoor to be admitted to bail citing the fact that he had been kept in custody beyond the 72-hour period.
Hanoman explained that his client was arrested last Wednesday and police insisted on keeping him in custody although he was indicted on a bailable offence.
The lawyer said that he reminded the police of his client’s constitutional rights and signaled his intentions to seek compensation.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones opposed bail for the defendant citing the gravity of the charge. Jones said that George is still being investigated by police as they believe he is the mastermind behind trafficking in narcotics.
The prosecutor pointed out that the defendant attempted to bribe police on a sting operation.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan admitted Gafoor to bail and instructed him not to go within 50 feet of the witnesses until the completion of the matter.
This matter will be called again on July 6.

“Orin de want something from de shop, but when Dexter stop he from coming in, he pull out a knife and stab him three times to his heart,” a relative of Jules said.
Further, persons indicated that the perpetrator attempted to run away after committing the act, but was caught and beaten by neighbours, who later turned him over to the police.

Relatives told this publication that prior to this incident, the perpetrator had threatened to kill his family on many occasions and was even dubbed a “miscreant.” These sentiments were shared because of the fact that several reports had already been allegedly filed against him in the past by neighbours and even family members, with whom he was involved in altercations.
His most recent threat to kill his family was allegedly made last week, after he was involved in a discussion about the fact that he was unemployed.
The disgruntled relatives and neighbours described Orin as ungrateful for his actions, because his now dead brother took care of him by providing him with a roof to live under and all the other essentials.
Dexter leaves to mourn his six other siblings, wife and two children.
Orin Jules is expected to be charged with murder this week.

Corentyne family attacked, robbed by masked bandits

THREE masked men, armed with guns, attacked and robbed Wassim Ally and his family at their Hogstye Village, Central Corentyne home on Saturday at about 04:00hrs.Having gained entry to the home after Ally, a Sales Representative at Sukhram’s Gas Station, had opened a back door to go to his back verandah as he was preparing to fast for the day, two of the three bandits invaded the home and demanded cash and jewellery from Ally and his family.

The bandits ransacked the house in their bid to find cash, and carted off more than $500,000 in local and foreign currencies, besides taking a quantity of jewellery. As the men continued to demand cash from the family, one of them gun-butted Ally in his head.

Ally’s wife, Namima Ally, said she was in the bedroom when two of the men barged in and shouted at her to hand over the money. During the ordeal, one of the men held on to her throat and threatened to kill her if she did not comply with their request.

“I started to scream and he choked me; he told me to be quiet and to give them the money. I quickly gave it to them, but they still ask for more, and I gave them all our jewellery”.

She said that while this was happening, another bandit kept guard downstairs.

The traumatized woman said the bandits then went over to her son’s room, kicked down the door and brought him outside into the hallway, where they demanded that he show them where the rest of the money was.

She noted that after the family had nothing more to offer, the men quickly made their escape.

The family related that the police were summoned, and arrived sometime later.
No one has as yet been arrested, but police in ‘B’ Division are continuing their investigations.

A band of pirates tosses three fishermen overboard after allegedly strapping them to an anchor.
Within the past few months, it’s been one heinous murder after the next, with many of the perpetrators seemingly going to extremes to inflict torture on their victims, even when the victims presented no threat.
Such was the case on August 1, 2015, when the battered body of 74-year-old Danrasie Ganesh,  also known ‘Carmen’, was found in her Montrose, East Coast Demerara home.
Security cameras at the premises later showed a young man repeatedly striking the defenceless Ganesh and calmly walking around her flat.

Some three weeks later, police arrested and charged 27-year-old Colin Alleyne, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, with Mrs. Ganesh’s murder.
That murder was hardly forgotten when, on Monday January 4, 2016, a gang invaded the Plantation Hope, West Coast Berbice home of 49-year-old Anita Baichan.
Binding Mrs. Baichan and her 28-year-old son, Moshim Khan, with duct tape, the intruders then set the property alight.
About a week later, grocery store owners Arthur Rajkumar, 81, and his reputed wife, Dianne Chamanlall, were robbed, beaten and chopped to death in their Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice home.
Police investigations led to charges being laid against three young men, aged between 18 and 24, in connection with both cases.
Rooplall Abrahim, 24, and 18-year-old Gocoul Madanpaul, were charged with Baichan’s murder.
Madanpaul was also charged with Nazamadeen Raffick, who is also 18, for the murders of Arthur Rajkumar, 81, and his reputed wife, Dianne Chamanlall.

In late September, 2012, the mutilated bodies of popular bar owner Jennifer Persaud, her six-year-old-old son, Afridi, and 15-month-old Jadon, were found in their Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara home.
Some four years would pass before police would announce that they had solved the case. Last April, police charged 31-year-old Abishai Caesar was yesterday charged with the murders of Jennifer Persaud and her sons.
And on the night of April 19, Mohamed Munir, 75, and his wife, Bibi Jamila Munir, 69, were burned alive in their heavily-grilled two-storey home at Good Hope, West Bank Demerara.
Police believe that bandits set the property alight after the victims raised an alarm.
Neighbours had recalled hearing the couple screaming that intruders were in the house and some even recalled seeing at least two individuals on the couple’s verandah. Police are still to track down their killers.

The year actually began with the unearthing of a gruesome killing that had happened late in the previous year.
On October 14, 2015, Dominic Bernard, an 18-year-old British national, came to Guyana…and promptly vanished.
On January 8, 2016, Bernard’s decomposed body was found in a shallow grave at Nurney, Corentyne Berbice.
A post mortem showed that he had been clubbed at the back of the head until his skull fractured.
The victim’s 23-year-old god-brother, Aaron Hing, and  24-year-old Staymon George called Sherwin, both of Kildonan Village, Corentyne, Berbice, have been charged with Bernard’s murder.
And it was last May that a heinous murder came to light and a cold case was solved.
That happened when police dug up a woman’s  skeletal remains from behind a backyard fence in Seaforth Street, Campbellville.
The remains are believed to belong to Babita Sarjou, who vanished without trace on November 4, 2010.
The remains were found at the back of the house in which Sarjou’s estranged husband, Shardanand Naraine, called “Anand”, resided.
Narine, and Darryl Ponton, called “Yankee”, were subsequently charged with murder.
On May 12, 75-year-old Pairadeau Mars, a retired professor and remigrant from the US, was found bound, gagged and beaten to death in the study room of his Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar home.
The following day, police arrested five teens in connection with Professor Mars’ murder. Among them were two girls, aged 15 and 17, and three young men, who have since been charged with murder.

The housewife told the court, “It’s my stuff; my husband and children were not involved.”

Her husband, James, however, was charged with inciting her to traffic the substance between June 1 and 15 at their home at Lot 100 B Mora Street, Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara. It’s a charge that the 23-year-old taxi driver has denied.

Mrs. Forde has to return to court on June 21 for sentencing, while her husband was remanded to prison until July 25.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford-Thompson contended that the woman showed no remorse, as she attempted to traffic the drug while travelling with her two kids.

The prosecutor gave as the reason for opposing bail for the husband his being charged as a principal offender after allegedly soliciting his wife to traffic the cocaine.

According to Sandiford-Thompson, on June 15, at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Angelica Forde and her two children were on a flight to the US via Barbados when CANU officers stationed there noticed that her clothing was fitted in an unusual manner and became suspicious. Sandiford-Thompson said a female rank took the woman into a room, conducted a body search, and found the cocaine strapped to her body in packets hidden underneath her clothing.
