Granger to swear in James Patterson as GECOM chairman
-unilateral decision made
October 19,2017
This story is developing and will be updated.
President David Granger is to swear in a Chairman of GECOM tonight, according to an advisory from the Ministry of the Presidency.
A decision was arrived at following a meeting between Granger and Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo today.
It comes after months of deadlock between the two over the choice. Stabroek News has been told that the person chosen is retired Justice James Patterson, 84. His name was not on the three lists submitted by Jagdeo. Sources say that Jagdeo did not agree with Pattersonâs name and it would in effect mean that Granger has made a unilateral decision. Patterson chaired the Commission of Inquiry into last yearâs prison fire that killed 17 prisoners.

The slop can boys won once again as they impose dictatorship on he nation. Now our benevolent jackass pick an 84 year old who may not live to see 2020.

The dude is 84 years old. Is there no one under 50 looking for work in Guyana? People at 84 are supposed to be retired and enjoying their retirement.

What came of the COI that Patterson chaired last year?

Granger didn't wasted a minute to swear in the new GECOM Chairman. This pick can go beyond any stretch of imagination where the next election stands. I am waiting to hear what Jagdeo have to say.
Today I had a discussion with my cousin and told him Granger have the power not pick the GECOM Chairman from the list Jagdeo submitted, not because the PPP did that,Granger is obliged to do so,he was mad with me,i told him the Constitution of Guyana gives too much power to the President.
I knew all along Granger will use this power and nominate some one of his own choice. The game begins from now to 2020.

Only problem is that this government had promised the Guyanese people that they will be different.

True,
the people have to start a movement for Constitutional Amendments to reduce the power of the President,I have been saying this for awhile.

Guyana needs a representative government where all can feel represented.

Oh, it's rigging time again, you won't believe me/ I can see that faraway look in your eyes ....
If the 84-year-old man dies before 2020 Jagdeo will have to submit a new list.
I expected this outcome so it is not a surprise. Now, the ball is in Jagdeo's court not much he can do but have some demonstrations. No credibility in the international community so cannot get them to exert any pressure.
Here we go Again! 2020 will just be a sham.

It should be noted that Pattersonâs name was not included in the third and final list which was submitted by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.
News Room was reliably informed that the Opposition Leader is not in agreement with the Presidentâs decision.

President Granger and the Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo had moments ago met to discuss the matter.

Excerpts from Inews.
The Opposition Leader is a press briefing after the meeting was held said that this was their plan from the inception, highlighting that it was a plan to frustrate him into folding by rejecting his nominees, but after he consistently provided names, lists after list, the âcharadeâ was ended and the President will now appoint someone of his own choosing.
Jagdeo said that he will take them to court and gave non cooperation.

PPP embarks on non-cooperation with govt after Grangerâs unilateral appointment of GECOM Chairman
October 19, 2017

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo said President David Granger has informed him that he has decided to appoint Retired Justice James Patterson as the next Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), sparking off a decision by the Peopleâs Progressive Party (PPP) to refuse to cooperate with the government.
âRight now this government will not get our cooperation on any issue until they start complying with our constitution,â Jagdeo told a news conference at Freedom House, his partyâs headquarters.
He said the PPPâs councillors at the Neigbourhood Democratic Council and Town Councils would not be lending its support to councillors in those districts and regions where his party has a majority.
Jagdeo added that the PPP has decided not to participate in a Border Committee meeting
Patterson is due to be sworn in by President Granger at State House Thursday night at 8:30.
Jagdeo said the appointment of Justice Patterson amounted to a conflict of interest because he was hired by the Granger-led administration to chair a Commission of Inquiry into the military and he is currently an advisor to the Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General. âIt seem as though the President has picked someone who is in the employ of the government,â he said.
Jagdeo said any time the seventh person- the Chairman of GECOM- is picked unilaterally violates collaboration and merely went through the process to appear democratic by instead frustrating the process.
âWhat we have here tonight is a fundamental assault on our democracy by an undemocratic corrupt cabal,â he said.
The Opposition Leader accused Granger of being a liar and someone who could not be trusted. âYou canât take him at face face valueâĶ At the heart of this presidency lies a very sinister nature,â he said.
Jagdeo said the unilateral appointment of Patterson is a part of a plan to rig the elections as had been the case between 1968 and 1992, adding that the PPP would have to again struggle for democracy. He said the international community and civil society would be apprised of moves to engage in electoral malpractices.
âThis is an attempt to take our country to the past and attempt to rig the next elections,â he said.

I could have said if better, Mr Jagdeo. You get blindsided by the Americans, and now you get blindsided from Granger. When the America ambassador butt into GECOM's affair, you should know what's ahead. Stop you kissing and hugging up and get serious. Three strikes you're out. The PPP prospect of 2020 is dead.
Sad day for democracy in Guyana. The governing coalition does not uphold the constitution. They do not walk the talk. Guyana is about to slide back to the days of party supremacy and dictatorship. Why are they afraid of the will of the people ? I am waiting to see the reaction of the ABC countries .
Granger wore his Indian outfit and celebrated Diwali in style and then 'dig it up' in the Indians. Sad day for Guyana.
For the folks who were all out behind the coalition Government and did not see this coming, may your conscience be your guide.
Granger should be made to explain how he came about with his choice. Out of eighteen persons he found none to be worthy of that position but one ole goat he was able to find. I thought for sure the last list had a couple for the job.
I tell yall he get he eyes an pass BJ.
Victory for AS KISSERS and BATTY WASHERS!! Just for a minute think about if the PPP did this what the Namakaram Crabdaag would have said. That BLOOD SUCKING PARASITE is capable of selling his most prized possessions foe fame, wealth and power. He is dead but shame to close his eyes. The show Dead Man Walking was made from his story!!

President Granger is not a democrat. He idolizes President Burnham the dictator. Instead of winning the hearts of the Guyanese people through responsible governance, he is about to take away their democratic right to choose the government of their choice. This is not about Jagdeo , this is about the entire nation.
