Sonu Nigam receives kudos for his performance at Harvard University.

Posted: Oct 16th 2007 by Ruhi Tandon

It's not a classical singer or a musical Guru but, our main stream singer Sonu Nigam, who was invited by Harvard University to be a part of their anniversary celebrations this year.

Sonu, who is busy touring the US and Canada, was contacted by the university but, the singer initially ignored it thinking that someone was playing a prank with him.

Sonu was honored to be a part of the prestigious celebration event and decided to give the guests at the Harvard University a taste of Gandhi's Bhajan, "Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye" which he translated in English and also changed the composition.

President Bush, who also attended the event, applauded Sonu's commendable performance. Sonu also expressed his thoughts on Gandhi and his teachings.

Career

Sonu Nigam started his singing career at the age of three, when he joined his father on stage to sing Mohammad Rafi's Kya Hua Tera Wada. He proceeded from then on to accompany his father on his singing assignments in weddings and parties. He participated in several music competitions in his teenage years and won them all until he was not allowed to participate any more! He moved to Mumbai with his father in search of his proper singing career at the mere age of 18.

His initial years in Mumbai proved to be a struggle, and Sonu started by singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs, mainly for the Rafi Ki Yaadein album series. His first movie song as a playback singer was in the film Janum which was a major flop in (1990). This film was not officially released due to some reason but some considered it as a flop. Again he got a break as a playback singer in Gulshan Kumar's film Aaja Meri Jaan and then "Accha Sila Diya Tune" (also sung in Gujarati) from Bewafa Sanam (1996). The latter was what gave him the recognition needed as a singer. At this time, he also started hosting Sa Re Ga Ma, a television singing talent competition that became one of the most popular shows on Indian television. Thereafter, the offers poured in, albeit slowly at first. He shot to fame with the song "Sandese Aate Hai" from Border (1997). In the initial stages, he was type-cast as a Rafi-sound-alike. The image was transformed after his brilliant rendition of "Yeh Dil Deewana" in the film Pardes (1997). Since then, he has created a unique trademark style of his own.

SONU NIGAM:

Sonu's acting career started as a child artist in a number of films. As an adult, Sonu has acted in a few more films, namely Jaani Dushmaan alongside Sunny Deol, Manisha Koirala and Akshay Kumar as well as other actors; Kash Aap Hamare Hote where he plays the lead opposite Juhi Babbar, daughter of Raj Babbar; and lastly Love in Nepal with Flora Saini and Sweta Keswani, where he plays the lead again. However it is to be said that all three films have not done terribly well at the box-office. He has not taken up acting since his last venture in Love in Nepal, but has recently been said to be involved in another film as a lead actor. The film, called Ankhon Ankhon Mein is supposedly about a blind singer.

Pyaar kiya to darna kya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid to fall in love
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki, pyaar kiya
We fell in love, we didn't commit any crime
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki, chhup chhup aahein bharna kya
We fell in love, we didn't commit any crime, then why should we sigh in secret

Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Pyaar kiya to darna kya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

Aaj kahenge dil ka fasaana, jaan bhi le le chaahe zamaana - 2
We'll tell our tale this day even if the world demands our lives
Maut vohi jo duniya dekhe
real death is what is witnessed
Maut vohi jo duniya dekhe, ghut ghutkar yun marna kya
real death is what is witnessed by all, why should we suffocate in secrecy

Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Pyaar kiya to darna kya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

Unki tamanna dil mein rahegi, shamma isi mehfil mein rahegi - 2
This desire for my beloved will stay in my heart, this flame will burn for my beloved
Ishq mein jeena, ishq mein marna
to live for love , to die for love
Ishq mein jeena, ishq mein marna, aur hamein ab karna kya
to live and die for love is all that's left for us

Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Pyaar kiya to darna kya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

Chhup na sakega ishq hamaara, chaaron taraf hai unka nazaara
our love cannot be hidden, it's visible all around
Chhup na sakega ishq hamaara, chaaron taraf hai unka nazaara
our love cannot be hidden, it's visible all around

Parda nahin jab koi khuda se
when we are not hiding our love from God
Parda nahin jab koi khuda se, bandon se parda karna kya
when we are not hiding our love from God, why should
we hide our love from mankind

Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

--CHORUS--
Pyaar kiya to darna kya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

--FEMALE--
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki, chhup chhup aahein bharna kya
Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya

My wife Madhurima and I have split: Sonu Nigam

Though Sonu Nigam is in seventh heaven as far as his professional life is concerned, his personal life is a shambles "” the five-year-old Sonu-Madhurima marriage is on the rocks.
We asked Sonu about the trouble in his marriage and he admitted to it.
"Madhurima and I need space; both of us are shattered, but life has to move on. I find there is no other alternative but to go our own ways, although we did try a lot to reconcile.

It has been a difficult decision for me, because I am very sensitive and emotional. I am the type of person who gets attached even to his driver! I realised that my creativity would be at stake if I continued to pretend all was hunky-dory on the marital front."

So has the couple separated? "Madhurima continues to live in my house, but unfortunately, we do not communicate. I feel that it is better to part amicably, retaining respect for each other, instead of matters precipitating to a level where we do not even like to see each other's faces."

Sonu's is the classic case of once-bitten-twice-shy as far as marriage and love are concerned. "Right now, It is too early for me to say whether I will fall in love with another woman."

Ironically, Sonu's album Chanda Ki Doli, brought out by T-Series, is an out-and-out romantic album, even though the romance has crept out of the singer's life. Will Sonu and Madhurima be able to iron out their differences? Only time will tell.

SONU NIGAM:

Q: How true are the rumors linking you to Sunidhi Chauhan?

A: I am sick and tired of answering such questions. Sunidhi is a colleague of mine and it is rubbish to link both of us together. All that I can tell the media is that they should exercise caution when they print such stories. As long as the media doesn't misquote me and do not drag in my family, I pay no heed to such rumors but there is a limit to one's patience.

Q: Despite the strained relationship on your personal front, your latest album is all about love and romance. Chanda Ki Doli.

A: It is for the first time I have composed a hard-core qawwali. The tone of the song is on a romantic note. The USP of the album is that the mid tempo and the orchestrisation of the songs differ. My aim as a singer is to reach the interiors by catering to the masses as well as the classes instead of making an attempt to impress only the so-called classes.

Q: Your distressed personal front is thankfully not reflecting on your work. Is it true that you will be soon doing a film with Kareena Kapoor?

A: People ask me why I am accepting films with rank newcomers instead of grabbing a film with a big established heroine as my co-star. The truth is that I was slated to work opposite Kareena Kapoor in a film called Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein to be directed by Akashdeep. It will be like a dream project for me. Akashdeep and I are waiting for the right producer to come forward to launch the film.

Q: Finally, is there another woman in your life?

A: As of now it is too early for me to say whether I will fall in love with another woman once again in my life.
