NOSTALGIC FILM SONGS OF BOLLYWOOD THAT ARE MEANT TO BRING BACK THE MEMORIES WHICH  WE HAVE HAD IN GROWING UP LISTENING TO: WE WILL FEATURES MELODIES FROM THE 40'S 50'S 60'S AND MAYBE 70'S: GEMS OF THE  PERIOD, SOME FIFTY PLUS YEARS AGO:

An ageable person would remember that though the 1940's and 1950's  was only six to seven decades ago, it looks like that was an entirely different world altogether from what it is today. For one, things were much simpler and un-complicated and moreover, people seemed to have all the time in the world at their disposal. Imagine most would walk long distances to visit families taking a long time  to cover a distance of maybe 25 miles, now that can be covered  in just a few minutes. Yes, one used to measure distances in miles those days, instead kilometres.

In the 40's to the 60's the singers that have given us Classics upon classics were Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mukesh Chand Mathur, Talat Mahmood, and quite a few others:

Enjoy the Nostalgic tunes of yesteryear:

1) SUHAANI RAAT DHAL CHUKI

http://link.songs.pk/popsong.php?songid=2488

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come
Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come
Jahan ki rut badal chuki
The world's the climate have changed
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Nazaarein apni mastiyaan dikha dikhaake so gaye
The sights have shown their effects and are now gone
Sitaarein apni roshni luta lutaake so gaye
The stars have brilliantly shone and are now no more
Har ek shamma jal chuki
Every lamp that lit has burnt out
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
When are you going to come

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Tadap rahe hai hum yahan
I am suffering here
Tadap rahe hai hum yahan tumhaare intezaar mein
I am suffering whilst waiting on you
Tumhaare intezaar mein
Waiting on you
Tumhaare intezaar mein
Waiting on you
Fiza ka rang aa chala hai
the colorful springtime is almost here
Mausam-e-bahaar mein
in the beautiful season
Mausam-e-bahaar mein
in the beautiful season
Hawa bhi rukh badal chuki
The winds have also changed directions
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

Suhaani raat dhal chuki
The lovely night has decended
Na jaane tum kab aaoge
I don't know when you will come

YESTERYEAR CLASSICS OF BOLLYWOOD

Author: Dr. Mandar

Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki
Singer: Mohd. Rafi
Music: Naushad
Film: Dulari (1949)

Nazaare Apni Mastiyan
Luta Luta Ke So Gaye
Sitaare Apni Roshni
Dikha Dikha Ke So Gaye
Har Ek Shama Jal Gayii
Na Jaane Tum Kab Aaoge

Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki,
Na Jaane Tum Kab Aaoge?’

(‘Bright worldly gaieties have faded into darkness. Even the stars have gone off to sleep. There is no light in sight. The beautiful night is whiling away. O my beloved, when will you come?&rsquo

The lyrics are beautiful. The tune is superb. The voice is enchanting. More than fifty years have passed since this great song came into existence, yet it hasn’t lost its magic one bit.

The picturization of the song is ordinary - a mandolin- wielding actor wandering aimlessly on an artificial studio set. That actor was Suresh – a name little known today, lying almost forgotten in the back pages of Hindi film history. The film was Dulari (1949)– a non-descript caper that also featured eternal beauty Madhubala and the stunt hero Shyam.

Composer Naushad was then riding high on crest of popularity and he came up with a touch of genius when he conceived this melodious tune for Shakeel Badayuni’s memorable lyrics. But it required another genius by the name- Mohammed Rafi to make it immortal with his singing. It was Rafi’s overpowering intensity of expression that turned this lovelorn song into a classic.

Till that time, Rafi was just one of the many struggling singers trying to make a name in Hindi film music. No doubt, he had had a few hit songs before- especially the famous non-film song Suno Suno Aye Duniyawalo, Bapuji Ki Amar Kahani- composed by Husnlal- Bhagatram but his real potential was not apparent in those earlier offerings. Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki brought him well and truly into his own, paving way for a career at the top that defined limits and set standards for generations to come.

In 1949, Lata got her big break with the song Aayega Aanewaala from the movie Mahal. The song was for Bollywood's screen goddess Madhubala and was composed by Khemchand Prakash. The film was a hit and proved to be a turning point in the careers of Madhubala and Lata. The other major movie that made an impact was Raj Kapoor's "Barsaat" with music by Shankar-Jaikishan and hits such as 'Jiya beqarar hai' and 'Chhod gaye baalam.

Our next Classic is done by Lata Mangeshkar and yes you guess right, the song is taken from the Film Mahal and it is titled aayega aanewala.

2) AYEGA AYEGA AYEGA ANEWALA

Khaamosh hai zamaanaa, chup chup hain sitaare
The world is still, the stars are quiet
Aaraam se hai duniyaa, bekal hai dil ke maare
The world is content, but the lovers are restless
Aise mein koii aahat, is tarah aa rahii hai
In this stillness, I am startled with a subtle sound
Jaise ki chal rahaa hai, man mein koii hamaare
It seems that some one is walking within my heart
Yaa dil dhadak rahaa hai, ik aas ke sahaare
Or is it the sound of my heartbeat, which is beating in hope that

Aayega aayega aayega
Some one will come
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega
The one who must come, will come

(Deepak bagair kaise parwaane jal rahe hain)2
How is it that moths are burning without a flame

(how does one feel restless without a reason)
(Koi nahin chalata, aur teer chal rahe hain)2
Even though no one is throwing the arrows, I can feel the pain
(how does one feel the pain of seperation without a lover)

(Tadpega koi kab tak beaas besahaare)2
How long should a helpless person suffer without a hope?
Lekin yeh keh rahe hain dil ke mere ishaare
But my hearts believes that

Aayega aayega aayega
The one I want is on its way
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega

The one who must come, will come

(Bhatakthi hui jawaani manzil ko dhoondti hai)2
This beauty is desolate and wandering, looking for her destination
(Maajhi bagair nayya sahil ko dhoondti hai)2
Like a boat without a boatman she is looking for the shore
(Kya jaane dil ki kashti kab tak lage kinaare)2
Who knows when the heart/boat will find the shore( my lover)
Lekin yeh keh rahe hain dil ke mere ishaare
But my heart believes that

Aayega aayega aayega
some one will come
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega aayega
the one who must come will come.

Nostalgic:
Aayega aanewala (Mahal, 1949; music by Khemchand Prakash) - This was the song that defined the beginning of the Mangeshkarian magic and transformed Madhubala into an instant living legend. Ironically, Madhubala didn't lip-sync it on screen at all ! It was played in the background. But what an impact it made ! With one song Lataji wiped away all the careers of existing female singers. Ashok Kumar who played the lead in Mahal still recalls how everyone in the room reacted when the then- unknown Lata was asked to sing. Even today mention of Aaayega aanewala lights up Lataji's eyes."It's hundred percent my favourite. I had done a number of rehearsals for the song. Actually the composer Khemchand Prakash heard me singing for Anil Biswas. A number of tunes were readied for Aayega aanewala. I was given strict instructions about the importance of the song. The producer Ashok Kumar and the director Kamal Amrohi told me I had to sing as though the heroine was approaching from a distance. Since the studio was very large, I was placed in one corner of the room and told to gradually approach the microphone in the middle of the room while singing. There were no dubbing and editing devices in those days. We had to do it all in one go. I still remember we recorded the entire day."

4) TUM NA JAANE KIS JAHAAN MEIN KHO GAYE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ViU4snrErE

(Tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye)2
Where are you my love
Ham bharii duniyaa mein tanahaa ho gaye
I am alone and desolate in this big world
Tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye

Maut bhii aatii nahiin, aas bhii jaatii nahiin
I am unable to die, the hope of meeting you keeps me alive
Dil ko ye kyaa ho gayaa, koii shah bhaatii nahiin
I don't know what has happend to me, I don't enjoy anything
(Luut kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan)2
After ruining my world, where are you hiding?
Tum kahaan, tum kahaan, tum kahaan
Where, oh where

tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
Where are you my love

Ek jaan aur laakh gam, ghut ke rah jaaye na dam
I have to face the pain of seperation alone,
I don't know if I can live with this suffering
Aao tum ko dekh lein, Duubatii nazaron se ham
Please come, so that I can see you once before I die
(Luut kar meraa jahaan chhup gaye ho tum kahaan)2
After ruining my world, where are you hiding?
Tum kahaan, tum kahaan, tum kahaan
Where, oh where

Tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye
Where are you my love
Ham bharii duniyaa mein tanahaa ho gaye

If we were to go by the BBC South Asian Network, on May 27/2013 or sometime there about they had reported that the most famous all time song would have been "Baharon Phool Barsao" and they listed 19 others songs to make up the best top 20 Songs of all time.

I think that for me to say which is the all time best song/s of bollywood, honestly I would not be able to do so, as there are so many great songs throughout the years, and maybe every decades were laced with top quality songs..........what you may like might simply not be my taste, so we would differ in taste. I do not know what yardstick they might have used to arrive at what they reported, but simply I am not impressed by their reports, as I think that there are many great songs apart from Baharon Phool Barsao. Do not think that they have even ventured into the late 40's and early 50's. Lets hear some of yours Warrior.

Hello Bai asj, can you please play jolly/happy/romantic songs for Christmas. This is the season to be happy.  The whole world is celebrating this joyous season. I know there are plenty of Joyous happy songs from old Hindi Films.

Baharon Phool Barsao is one of them, and then another one is "Mehboob Mere", Dil Tera Deewana Hai Sanam",  I mean there are tons of beautiful songs that can put one in a happy mood.  will greatly appreciate if you play them.

Yes I agree, the last one was so sad, we need to merry it up a little,
The next one is a duet done by Lata and Mukesh and it is a love song and indeed a Classic:
