The lawyers was there ,the police acted unprofessionally carrying out the instructions that was given.

Christopher Jones have done nothing illegal ,how can one be charged for simple larceny for stealing something from yourself . The government made Jones more popular ,he was wrongfully arrested.

There should be a swift apology to Jones and his family and financial compensation provided for the humiliation and distress caused as a result of excessive police actions.

I call a spade a spade. That's why people sometimes don't agree with me.

APNU/AFC spent $4.9M to equip non-existent barber shop

…items reportedly stored at Christopher Jones’ home

Police have applied for a search warrant to gain access to the home of senior A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) official, Christopher Jones, after it was allegedly reported that $4.9 million in barbershop equipment purchased by the former Administration is stored on his property.

Items which Police were trying to recover on Thursday evening

However, when Police went to the home of the former Director of Sports, in Tucville, Georgetown, they were refused entry and told to get a search warrant. By this time, several APNU officials, including Executives of both People’s National Congress (PNC) and Alliance for Change (AFC), also turned up at the property as Police stood guard.
According to audit documents seen by this publication, the regional administration received an Inter/Intra Departmental Warrant (IDW) ? 6/2019 dated June 19, 2019, from the Social Protection Ministry valuing $4.985 million for the procurement of equipment for the barbershop under Sustainable Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development (SLED). A Financial Return presented revealed that the full amount was expended as at December 31, 2019. An audit examination of the relevant records revealed that the warrant was expended via two payment vouchers to the value of $4.084 million and $900,999. Audit documents revealed that approval was not granted from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) for the procurement of a Condensing Unit valuing $1.528 million. However, audit checks revealed that the item was still purchased and supplied. Additionally, further, audit checks revealed that the cheque was paid to the supplier on October 2, 2019, but the time of reporting in August 2020, items to the value of $900,999 were not supplied.

Items which were paid for by Government for the non-existent barbershop but were not supplied

Meanwhile, the audit report stated that a physical inspection of the assets purchased revealed that items valuing $4.084 million were still not put into use, since these items were stored in a room at the residence of the beneficiary, Christopher Jones. Further, the audit report stated that details of a letter from the Permanent Secretary of the Social Protection Ministry dated May 22, 2019, states that the items were to be procured for the beneficiary who “operates” a barbershop. However, at the time of the physical verification, it was discovered that the beneficiary does not operate a barbershop, since the construction of the said barbershop has not yet commenced.

Bai KP we are all Guyanese brothers and sisters. We need to step back and analyze this incident. I am sure that there is another side to it but the current facts are as follows:

1 The police showed up without a search warrant.

2. Jones exercised his constitutional right to ask for a warrant.

3. Jones claims that he received these items through a grant.

4. Arresting him without a warrant seems excessive.

5. Apparently a stay order was rejected by the police.

6. Is this way forward for our country ?

7. His children were traumatized.

I am not making this a political incident but I want to see justice for all of my Guyanese brothers and sisters.

Let's see the AG and head of police now present their side of this matter. We can then hear both sides of this matter and draw our conclusions.

Remember the incident with Nandalall and the Law Books, Well the shoe is on the other foot.  These political appointee are at the moment sabotaging the government, they are refusing to leave office and not wanting to return State Assets.  The authorities must act swiftly, without prior notice, so to catch them in the act.

I do have a few concerns:

"Audit documents revealed that approval was not granted from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) for the procurement of a Condensing Unit valuing $1.528 million. However, audit checks revealed that the item was still purchased and supplied. Additionally, further, audit checks revealed that the cheque was paid to the supplier on October 2, 2019, but the time of reporting in August 2020, items to the value of $900,999 were not supplied."

I am no expert but there are some serious unanswered questions. Let's await the other side of this matter. One can then assume that these are still state properties ?

If they are, why are this still at a private residence ?

Chistopher Jones , have the documents and explained how the application was processed and supply of the merchandise.

Who ever instructed the police is answerable ,the two Indian policemen has exacerbated the issue further ,one threatened to hit Mrs.Jones .

I am awaiting on an official government statement and one from the police before drawing any conclusions based on additional facts presented. I am not taking sides on this one.

There is always his story, the government's story and the police stories. Old people say that every story has three sides.

Why $4.9 Million in equipment?

Valid question and this was acquired and paid for without NPTAB's approval.

12 chairs and scissors costing $ 4.9 million ?  Something doesn't add up. Let's await an independent audit of this unapproved NPTAB transaction.

Granger condemns arrest of Christopher Jones, political harassment

-demands probe

Christopher Jones

Former president David Granger this afternoon condemned the arrest of former Sports Director Christopher Jones and demanded an immediate investigation into what he dubbed a coordinated political attack.

“I take this opportunity to strongly condemn the recent unwarranted and unlawful deprivation of the rights and freedom of Mr. Christopher Jones. As leader of the PNCR and representative of the list from which Christopher Jones was recently extracted to be a Member of Parliament, I call for an immediate end to this season of politically inspired harassment by the PPP,” Granger said in a statement issued this afternoon by the PNCR.

“The actions of ranks of the Guyana Police Force, who blatantly disregarded an order of the court and unlawfully entered the premises of Mr. Christopher Jones; arrested him and illegally seized personal property, must be stoutly condemned and immediately investigated. The PNCR will not allow this type of harassment of former public servants or any citizen by agents of the state to stand.  The PNCR calls on all Guyanese to join us to strongly condemn this abuse of state power and the persecution of an innocent man,” he added.

Granger, who noted that the PNCR stands firmly with Jones and will do everything to ensure that his rights and freedom are no longer violated, said the party is calling for an immediate cessation of harassment and politically inspired witch-hunting’ of current and former public servants.

“The PNCR demands an immediate investigation into what is clearly a well-coordinated and orchestrated political attack,” he added.

Jones, who has since been released, was arrested in the wee hours of this morning after police ranks broke into his home and seized equipment as part of a larceny probe.

@Mits.

My wife visited Guyana just before covid and she brought back a fresh bottle for me. The Guyanese customs started laughing when they saw coconut oil

My wife pulled out one of my picture and showed it to them, not one grey hair. They stopped laughing and started asking questions about the benefits of coconut oil.

The COP will make no apologies.  All the rioters will be charged with unlawful behavior and disturbing the peace. Jones is not going to get away with unlawful possession of state property. You do the crime you do the time.

Like the Pradoville Kriminals. Who sent the police without any warrants?

Wrong approach to the issue, excessive actions by the police, the die is cast.

In Guyana, you don't charge the Policemen for excessive action. The Black clothes Police did that all the time.
