GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:
One cannot compare Ghulam Ali's renditions, (especially in concert singing,) with other ghazal singers, his flair for letting go of the harmonium at times with that flashing smile of his, and hand gestures, and if we were to discuss his impeccable voice, which takes the listener to a height where sheer ecstasy reins supreme. At the end of it all they just keep asking for more.
Such is a performance of the maestro Ghulam Ali.

(5) HUM TERE SHEHR MAY AYE HAIN
Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(In Urdu poetry, "coming to your town" is used often as a metaphor for "coming to you")
Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
Sirf ek baar mulaaqaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me just once chance to meet you
Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(Merii manzil hai kahaan meraa thikaanaa hai kahaan)2
Where am I going? Where am I now?
Subah tak tujh se bichharakar mujhe jaanaa hai kahaan
Where shall I go when I leave you in the morning?
Sochane ke liye ek raat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance to think about it all night
(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(Apanii aakkhoon mein chhupaa rakhein hain juganuu main ne)2
I have concealed the twinkles in my eyes
Apanii palakoon pe sajaa rakhe hain aansuu main ne
I have adorned my eyelids with my tears
Merii aankhoon ko bhii barasaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give my eyes a chance to rain
(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(Aaj kii raat meraa dard-e-muhabbat sun le)2
Tonight, listen to the pain in my heart
Kanp-kanppaate huye honthoon kii shikaayat sun le
Listen to the laments of my quivering lips
Aaj izhaar-e-Khayaalaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance to express my feelings
(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller
(Bhuulanaa thaa to ye iqaraar kiyaa hii kyuun thaa )2
If you had to forget me, why did you accept me at first?
Bevafaa tuune mujhe pyaar kiyaa hii kyuun thaa
My unfaithful one! why did you ever love me?
Sirf do-chaar savaalaat kaa mauqaa de de
Give me a chance for just a couple of questions
(Ham tere shahar mein aaye hain musaafir kii tarah)2
I have arrived in your town as a traveller

(6) DIL MAY EK LEHER SAY UTHEE HAI ABHEE
(Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi)2
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Shor barpaa hai khana-e-dil mein)2
I hear a tumultous roar in my heart
(Koi deewaar si girii hai abhi)2
As if some wall has fallen just now
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Kuch to naazuk mizaaj hai hum bhi)2
I have a delicate disposition, too
(Aur ye chot bhi nayee hai abhi)2
And this wound is still fresh
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Yaad ki be-nishan jazeeron se)2
From the uncharted islands of my memory,
(Teri aawaaz aa rahi hai abhi)2
I now hear your voice rising forth
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Shahar ki be-chiraagh galiyon mein)3
In the darkened streets of the city,
(Zindagi tujh ko dhoondati hai abhi)2
My soul searches for you
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,

Album : Best Of Ghulam Ali
This one is coming directly from the heart of Ustad Ghulam Ali, it is soooo soothing, almost mesmerizing, so appropriate for when one is in love and there are so many obstacles and problems, getting in the way........trying to soak yourself into the music and the magical twist in words and variation leaves one in awe. It is like a magician weaving his magic and you are forced to observe and listen attentively to the fantastic pronunciation of the flowing Urdu in musical notes that keeps chugging at the heart.
Venkat I know see why you have this one as your favorite......it is truly a beauty and a gem.

(7) YEH DIL YEH PAAGAL DIL MERA
(BaDe busook se, duniya fareb deti hain)2
With great craftiness, the world deceives us
BaDe khuloos se hum eitbaar karte hain
With great naivete, we go on trusting
(Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi)2
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht mein, ek shahar tha)2, woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Kal shab mujhe, be-shakl ki aawaz ne chaunka diya)2
Last night a faceless voice startled me
(Main ne kaha,"Âtu kaun hai?"Â)2, uss ne kaha, aawaragi
I said, "who are you?"Â it replied, "Loneliness!"Â
(Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi)2
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht mein, ek shahar tha)2, woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera
(Ek tuu ke sadiyon se mere humraah bhi, humraaz bhi)2
There you are, for centuries, my fellow and confidant
(Ek main ke tere naam se,)3 aaya shana, aawaragi
Here I am, I had not even heard of you, Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht mein, ek shahar tha)2, woh kyaa hua, aawaragi
In this desert stood a town, what happened to it? Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera
(Yeh dard kii tanhaayian)2 yeh dasht ka viiran safar,
The loneliness of the pain, the arid crossing of the desert,
(hum log to ukta gayay,)2 apni sunaa, aawaragi
We have grown weary, tell us about yourself, Loneliness!
(Ek ajnabee jhaunke ne jab, poochha mere gham ka sabab,)2
An unfamiliar gust of wind asked me the reason for my sorrow
(Sehraa ki bhiigi reyt par)2, main ne likha, aawaragi
On the wet sands of the desert I wrote, Loneliness!
(Le, ab to dasht-e-shab ki saarii usratein sone lagii)3
Look, now all the troubles of the desert night have gone to sleep,
(ab jaagana hoga hamay,)2 kab tak bataa, aawaragi
Tell me. please. how much longer must I stay awake? Loneliness!
(Kal raat tanhaa chaand ko, dekhaa tha main ne khwaab mein)3
Last night, alone, I saw the moon in my reverie
(Mohsin mujhe, raas aayegi,)2 shayad sadaa, aawaragi
Perhaps it will suit me well forever, this Loneliness!
Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera, kyon bhuj gaya, aawaragi
This heart, this crazy heart of mine, why did it die? of loneliness!
(Iss dasht meN, ek shahar tha)2 woh kyaa hua, aawaragi

Yeh dil, yeh paagal dil mera,
ALBUM: LIFE STORY
Quote:
In Urdu, "aawaragi" has many meanings - immorality, dissoluteness, irresponsibility, wantonness, etc. But the meaning (not commonly taken) of loneliness, the painful loneliness of a person that does not want to conform, a free spirit, who has been dismissed by the world as a madman, probably best fits the thoughts in this ghazal. His once-spirited heart has withered away by the rejection, the light has gone out. He vows that he cannot live in a world where non-conformity is a sin, and discovers that his only true companion is his loneliness. How beautiful!" end quote.

ye dil ye paagal dil meraa kyo.n bujha gayaa aavaaragii
is dasht me.n ik shahar thaa vo kyaa huaa aavaaragii ...
The poet is asking why is the heart so subdued, where is its glitter, its shine?the meaning of saying ,in the heart there was a city,is simply that it was full of people,it loved but now has become desolate.ie.the heart is totally forlorn and like a desert, dead

GHULAM ALI: THE GHAZAL MAESTRO:
What makes Ghulam Ali's compositions special is his perfect understanding of the poetry, the soul of a ghazal. Fusing this with his mastery of classical music he has been able to bring this complex amalgam to the easy reach of all. "I have sung poems of so many great poets right from Mirza Ghalib, to Aamir Khusro, Ahmad Fayaz, Qateel Shifai, Fahat Shahzad, Gulzar, Akbar Allahabadi... There are so many others whose names don't come to mind. I have always remained faithful to the poems, never trying to change them. I was taught to enter the heart and aesthetics of ghazals. To recite the shers effectively, without distorting the beauty of the poetry. In fact, these changes are usual in film songs."

(8) HANGAMA HAI KYON BARPA
Andaaz apne dekhte hain, ayeene may woh
They look at themselves in the mirror,
Aur ye bhi dekhte hain koyee dekhta na ho
And make sure no one else is watching
Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything
Us mai se nahiin matalab dil jis se ho begaanaa
I speak not of the wine that intoxicates the mind
Maqsuud hai us mai se dil hii mein jo khichatii hai
I mean the kind that tugs at your heart
Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything
Main teri mast nigahon ka bharam rakh loongaa
I will keep the image of your intoxicating looks
Hosh ayaa bhi tu keh doonga mujhay hosh nahin
Even if I become conscious, I will say that I am still unconscious
Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything
Suuraj mein lage dhabbaa fitarat ke karishme hain
There is a shadow on the face of the Sun, it is a marvel of nature
But ham ko kahe kaafir allaah kii marzii hai
The idols call me an infidel, this is the wish of Allah
Hangaamaa hai kyuun barpaa tho.Dii sii jo pii lii hai
Why such a furore, after all, I just had a little sip
Daakaa to nahiin Daalaa chorii to nahiin kii hai
I did not rob anyone, nor steal anything
VERSES IN THE POEM, BUT NOT SUNG BY GHULAM ALI
IN THIS RECORDING:
Naa-tajurbaakaarii se vaa_iz kii ye baatein hain
The sermonizers speak from a lack of experience
Is rang ko kyaa jaane puuchho to kabhii pii hai
How can they know this feeling? ask if they have ever had a drink
Vaan dil mein ke sadame do yaan jii mein ke sab sah lo
They are inclined to deliver blows, and my nature is to bear all
Un kaa bhii ajab dil hai meraa bhii ajab jii hai
They have strange hearts, and my mind is equally strange
Har zarraa chamakataa hai anavaar-e-ilaahii se
Every particle of our being sparkles with the splendour of the Almighty
Har saans ye kahatii hai, ham hain to Khudaa bhii hai
Every breath says, if we are, then God is

VENKAT'S OBSERVATION ON GHULAM ALI'S HANGAAMA:
Quote "I have heard a few other singers do this ghazal, and all the lines you have listed seem to be the only ones coming up. It is very common for singers to pick different verses from the original every time they sing a ghazal, It shows off their knowledge of the poem, but also helps to give a fresh feel to their singing. Ghulam Ali must have sung this one hundreds of times in concerts, and it is a Ëgift' from the singer to the audience when he delivers a new verse or a new style to the ghazal.
In this version, Ghulam Ali has chosen to elaborate on the Raag Darbari in which this ghazal was composed. He has added the verse that annoyed you (and me) for this purpose. I do not believe that Ilahabadi wrote the couplet that Ghulam added here. It is just a change of pace from the melody, a different colour in the same Raag to embellish the performance." End Quote.
N.B As was also explained that particular sheyr was the opening salvo of his video recording that we listed above:

VENKAT'S OBSERVATION ON AKBAR ILAHABADI
QUOTE:
"Akbar Ilahabadi (Allahabadi) (1846-1921) was a great satirical poet who lent a new spark to this genre of Urdu poetry in India. Well-educated through home schooling and self-study, he went on to become a lawyer, then progressing to the position of District Judge of Banares in 1898. His poetry, which he took up seriously in his later years, spared neither the British nor his compatriots in its masterful satire. In this poem, sung by many as a song that seems to legitimize drinking, the poet has his tongue firmly in his cheek as he takes a stab at self-appointed moral guardians. Many verses are actually of a mystic nature, singing the praise of God in a Sufi tradition." END QUOTE.

AKBAR ILAHABADI
Akbar is the pioneer in the field of humour and sarcasm; before him there were only serious poets who ocassionly had one or two ash'ar of that kind in their ghazals. For Akbar humour was not only a style but an instrument to clearly understand the social change. He conveys his message in his own original style without losing the humorous feel. Like Iqbal he was also a poet of the mind, they both used their poetry to awaken the sleeping masses, but there is a sharp contrast in their styles. Underneath the wave of humour, we find the poet's pain - pain that this society is changing for the worst, pain that Muslims are forgetting their true values.
takeed-e-ibaadat pay yeh sab kahte hain larhke
peeri mein bhi AKBAR ki zarafat nahin jaati
[takeed-e-ibaadat = to remind for prayers, peeri= old age]
Akbar had great understanding and control of the Urdu language. He used simple language with very effective use. He also used English words in his poetry with interesting results, which was also to make fun of the Hindustanis who pretend to be British; a subculture that had thrived in the era of Akbar.

Na thaa raqiib to aaKhir vo naam kis kaa thaa
If it was not my rival, whose name was it?
(Guzar gayaa vo zamaanaa kahoon to kis se kahoon)2
Those days have gone by, who will listen to me?
(Khayaal dil ko mere subah-o-shaam kis kaa thaa)
My thoughts day and night, of whom were they?
OTHER VERSES IN THE POEM NOT SUNG BY GHULAM ALI
IN THE RECORDING PROVIDED:
Vo qatl kar ke har kisii se puuchhate hain
She took my life, and asks everyone,
Ye kaam kis ne kiyaa hai ye kaam kis kaa thaa
Who did this, whose work was it?
Na puuchh-taachh thi kisii kii na aav-bhagat
No one asked questions, there was no warm welcome (when I came)
Tumhaari bazm mein kal ehatamaam kis kaa thaa
But who was it that got so much caring in your company yesterday?
Hamaare Khat ke to purze kiye pa.Dhaa bhii nahiin
You tore my letter to pieces, did not even read it,
suna jo tum ne baa-dil vo payaam kis kaa thaa
But you listened with all your heart, whose message was that?
Inhiin sifa'at se hotaa hai aadamii mashahuur
It is through such qualities that one achieves fame
Jo lutf aap hi karate to naam kis kaa thaa
If she is doing the favours, who is taking the credit?
Har ek se kahate hain kyaa "Daag" bevafaa nikalaa
She says to everyone, "Âsee how unfaithful Daag turned out"Â
Ye puuchhe in se ko_ii vo Gulaam kis kaa thaa
Somebody please ask her, whose slave was he?

THE POET : DAAGH DELHVI
Daagh's real name was Nawab Mirza Khan. He was born in Delhi. Daagh lost his father, Nawab Shamsuddin Khan when he was just seven years old. Consequently, his mother remarried the heir apparent of the Mughal Empire, Shahzada Fateh-ul-Mulk alias Mirza Fakhru, the son of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar. Thus, Daagh was brought up in the royal environ of the Red Fort that was the symbolic seat of the illustrious power. He was also fortunate enough to acquire a princely education. The emperor, Zafar and Daagh's stepfather, Mirza Fakhru, were poets themselves and were the pupils of the poet laureate Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq. Such a literary surrounding drove Daagh towards poetry and he became the youngest disciple of Zauq. In a short time he mastered the shades and technicalities of ghazal writing and began participating in the royal mushairas (poetry readings) in his early teens.

THE POET : DAAGH DELHVI
Daag started reciting poetry at the age of ten. His forte was the ghazal. His poetry does not wallow in despair. The tone of his poems is exuberant. He was a self-acknowledged romantic but contrary to the impression one gets from his poetry, he eschewed wine. He had innumerable disciples. Usage of common words and phrases was distinctive of his style. His work comprises of four volumes consisting of 16,000 couplets.
Daag Dehlvi passed away in 1905.

2) DIL SE TERE NIGAH
(Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gayi)2
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
Donon ko ik ada mein razaamand kar gayi
With just one gesture they brought down both
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
Woh bada-e-shabaana ki sar-mastiaan kahaan
Where is the intoxication of the wine I drank all day?
Uthathe bas ab, ke lazzat-e-khwaab-e-sahar gayee
I shall get up now, the ecstasy of the early morning dream has passed
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gayee
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
(Dekho to dil-farebi-e-andaaz-e-naqsh-e-pa)2
Look how decieving my lover's walk can be
Mouj-e- kiraam-e-yaar bhi kya gul-katar gayi
The waves made by her gait have laid the garden to waste
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
(Nazzaara ne bhi kaam kiya waan naqaab ka)2
See what the sight of your unveiling has done
Masti se har nigaah tere ruk par bikhar gayi
Every intoxicated glance came to rest on your face and withered away
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul
(Maara zamaane ne ' asadullaah khaan' tumhein)2
Asad (Ghalib's given name), Time has defeated you
Wo walawale kahaan wo jawaani kidhar gayi
Where is that fervour, where is your youth?
Donon ko ik ada mein razaamand kar gayi
With just one gesture they brought down both
Dil se teri nigaah jigar tak utar gay
Your eyes went through my heart, all the way to my soul

Hi Sabi, so glad that you took time off from your busy schedule to pay us some attention, and you are enjoying, but I will be doing myself an injustice if I do not tell you that.. the credit for these wonderful works goes out to Ranjana, lately Venkat and Amral for making all of this happening. Colleagues from this forum also contributes a lot.
Hope that we can hold on to your attention, and have you as one of your ardent Ghazal Fan.

11) HUMNE HASRATON KE DAAG
Abdul Hameed Adam
Abdul Hameed Adam writes a very contemporary and strong prose, with his expressions not being limited to pain and complaint. He presents a variety of feelings as part of his overall style, and makes a person think about a lot of different aspects of the feelings he is trying to present.
His thoughts are provocative and progressive, his words are unmistakably bold. A beloved of the aging generation of today, Adam had several collections of poetry to his credit.

Ghulam Ali has the combination of classical music talent and the skill to make you feel the ghazal in your heart when you hear him. Aside from singing, he has composed many of the songs himself, and other great artistes like Asha have sung his compositions beautifully. I present one ghazal that Asha has sung with feeling, but I recommend you listen first to Ghulam Ali's own voice rendering the ghazal that truly touches your heart.

Haal-e-dil hum bhi sunate lakin
I, too, would have told her how my heart felt,
Jab wo rukhsat huwe, tab yaad aya

Din guzara tha badi mushkil se
The day went by with much difficulty
Phir tera wada-e-shab yaad aya
again, I remembered the night you promised me
Baith kar saaya-e-gul me "Nasir"
Sitting in the shadow of the flowers
Hum bahut roye, wo jab yaad aya.

Mujhe wo gulabadan yaad aa gaya hai
I remember that exquisite beauty
Bahaaron ko chaman yaad aa gaya hai
The bloom has descended on the garden

13) KAL CHAUDWIN KI RAAT THI
(Kal chaudhaviin kii raat thii shab bhar rahaa charchaa teraa)2
It was a full moon last night, and the talk was all about you
(Kuchh ne kahaa ye chaand hai)2 kuchh ne kahaa cheharaa teraa
Some said it was the moon, and some said it was your face
(Kal chaudhaviin kii raat thii shab bhar rahaa charchaa teraa)2
It was a full moon last night, and the talk was all about you
Ham bhii vahiin maujuud the ham se bhii sab puuchhaa kiye
I was there, too, and everyone asked me,
Ham hans diye ham chup rahe manzuur thaa pardaa teraa
I just smiled, and kept quiet; I respected your wish to be apart from me
Is shahar mein kis se milein ham se to chhuutii mahafilein
With whom shall I meet here? I had to leave all the parties
Har shakhs teraa naam le har shakhs diivaanaa teraa
Everyone spoke your name, everyone was crazy about you
Kuuche ko tere chhod kar jogii hii ban jaayein magar
I would stay away from you, and become an ascetic,
Jangal tere parbat tere bastii terii saharaa teraa
But the woods are yours, the mountains, the city, and the desert too
(you are everywhere)
Ham aur rasm-e-bandagii aashuftagii uftaadagii
I, with my worship, my derangement, and my helplessness
Ehasaan hai kyaa kyaa teraa ai husn-e-beparvaa teraa
All these favours are yours, my beautiful uncaring one
Do ashk jaane kis liye palkoon pe aa kar Tik gaye
I don't know why two tears stopped at my eyelids
Altaaf kii baarish terii ikraam kaa dariyaa teraa
One the torrent of your favours, the other a river of your kindness
Ai bedareegh-o-be-amaan ham ne kabhii kii hai fugaan
Oh rash and merciless one! Have I ever complained?
Ham ko terii vahashat sahii ham ko sahii saudaa teraa
Being in awe of you, and my madness for you, that is enough
Ham par ye sakhtii kii nazar ham hain faqiir-e-rahguzar
Why do you give me such harsh looks? I just beg from passers-by
Rastaa kabhii rokaa teraa daaman kabhii thaamaa teraa
Did I ever stop you, did I ever cling to your skirt (complain)?
Haan haan terii suurat hasiin lekin tuu aisaa bhii nahiin
Yes, your face is beautiful, but you are not
Is shakhs ke ashaar se shoharaa huaa kyaa kyaa teraa
So much about you has become famous because of my poetry
Beshak usii kaa dosh hai kahataa nahiin khaamosh hai
No doubt it is his own fault, he says nothing, remains silent
Tuu aab kar aisii davaa biimaar ho achchhaa teraa
Make up such a medicine that the sick one can find relief
Bedard sunnii hai to chal kahataa hai kyaa achchhii ghazal
Oh cruel one, come if you want to hear, a good ghazal
Aashiq teraa rusavaa teraa shaayar teraa "Inshaa" teraa
From your lover and poet "Inshaa," who caused your disgrace.

KAL CHAUDWIN KI RAAT THI
This is one of those rare occasion when instead of inputting the Ghazal
Audio, we have collectively decided to input the Poet's Version of the
Beautiful "Kal chaudhaviin kii raat thii shab bhar rahaa charchaa teraa"
Cant say why Ghulam Ali sings an identical verse twice.

(Tuu jo ai zulf-e-pareshaan rahaa karatii hai)2
You remain with your hair dishevelled
Kis ke ujare hue dil mein hai thikaanaa teraa
Whose desolate heart is the place for you?
(Apanii aankhon mein abhii kaund gaii bijali si)2
A flash of lightning must have blinded me,
(Ham na samajhe ki ye aanaa hai ke jaanaa teraa)2
I cannot make out if you are coming or going
(Tu khuda tho nahi ai naa sahay nadaan mera)2
You are not perfect, you could not bear my foolishness
(Kya khataa kii, jo kaha main ne na mana teraa)2
What did I do wrong by not heeding your word?
Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life
Aise aane se to behatar thaa na aanaa teraa
It would have been better if you had not come at all
Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life
VERSES IN THE POEM NOT SUNG BY GHULAM ALI
(Ye samajh kar tujhe, ai maut, lagaa rakhaa hai)2
O Death! I keep you close to me, thinking
Kaam aataa hai bure waqt mein aanaa teraa
It might be useful if you appear during bad times
(ËDaag' ko yuun vo mitaate hain, ye farmaate hain)
They are trying to erase ËDaag' (the stain), and saying
tuu badal daal huaa naam puraanaa teraa
"Change your (pen) name now, it has worn out"Â.
Le chalaa jaan merii ruuth ke jaanaa teraa
Your leaving in anger has taken my life

15) APANII DHUN MEIN RAHATAA HUUN:
Dil kii baat labo.n tak laathe
The feelings of the heart come up to the lips
Ab tak hum dukh sahte hai.n
Till now, I suffer the pain silently
Hum ne sunaa tha, is bastii me.n
I had heard that in this town,
Dil waale bhi rahte hai.n
There are also people of the heart
Ek hame.n awaara kahna
For one, you may call me immoral,
Koi badaa ilzaam nahi.n
It is not such a big accusation
Duniya waale dil waalo.n ko
The people of the world...
Aur bahut kuchh kahte.n hai.n
Call us (people of the heart) much worse names
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
(o pichhalii rut ke saathii)3
O my companions of days gone by
ab ke baras main tanhaa huun
Nowadays I am all alone
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
(terii galii mein saaraa din)4
All day, on your street,
dukh ke kankar chunataa huun
I gather the pebbles of pain
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
mujh se aankh milaaye kaun
Who will look into my eyes?
main teraa aa_iinaa huun
I am a mirror that belongs only to you
(meraa diyaa jalaaye kaun)3
Who will light my lamp?
main teraa khaalii kamaraa huun
I am an empty room in your life
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
(tere siva mujhay pehne kaun)2
Who will wear me except you?
main tere tanka kapda huun
I am a garment on your body
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
tuu jiivan kii bharii galii
You are a lane full of life
main jangal kaa rastaa huun
I am a forlorn path in the wilderness
(apanii lahar hai apanaa rog)2
my own movement is my bane
dariyaa huun aur pyaasaa huun
I am a river, yet I am thirsty
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
(aatii rut mujhe royegii)5
The new season will mourn me
jaatii rut kaa jhonkaa huun
I am a gust from the past days
Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun (2)
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you
Apanii dhun mein rahataa huun
I carry on at my own pace
