RIP: BIBI J:
Meri yaad hogi jidhar jaoge tum
My memories will follow you whereever you go
Kabhi naghma bun kay kabhi bun kay aanso
Sometimes in forms of tears and sometime as songs
Tarapta mujhe har taruf paoge tum
Where ever you look you will find me pining for you
Shamma jo jalaee hai meri wafa naye
My devotion/love is like a lighted candle
Bhujana bhi chahoo bhuja na sakoge
Even if you wish to extinguish this candle you will not succeed

Ustad Mehdi Hassan explaining the intricacies of music to Munni.
His deep husky voice respondet with pathos is one of the most moving experiences for music lovers. He has tremendous control over all the technical ragas which he renders in his ghazals with incomparable dexterity. His ever-popular ghazals include among others "Ranjish hi Sahi". "Baat karni mujhe mushkil", "Ghazab kiya tere waade pe" and "gulon mein rang bhare".

GHAZAL:MUDDAT HUI HAI YAAR KO:
MEHNDI HASSAN:
POET:MIRZA GHALIB:
(18) MUDDAT HUI HAI YAAR KO
(Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue)2
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
Josh-e-qadah se bazm chiraaghaan kiye hue
A while since a gathering was heated up with the vigour of goblets
Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
(Jee Dhoondta hai fir wohee fursat ke raat din)2
My heart searches again, for those same old days and nights, when
Baithe rahaim tasavvur-e-jaanaan kiye hue
I used to sit just like that, imagining about my beloved
Muddat huee hai yaar ko
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
ik nau_bahaar-e-naaz ko taaqe hai fir nigaah
again my eyes are looking at the inspiration of the new spring(my beloved)
chehra furoGH-e-mai se gulistaaN kiye hue
the beauty(brightness) of your face is making the flowers of the gardens intoxicated
(Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue)2
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
GHalib hamein na ched ki fir josh-e-ashq se
Ghalib don't tease me with the enthusiasm of tears, for
Baithe hain ham tahayya-e-toofaan kiye hue
I sit with the determination of facing a storm
Josh-e-qadah se bazm chiraaghaan kiye hue
A while since a gathering was heated up with the vigour of goblets
Muddat huee hai yaar ko mehmaan kiye hue
It's been a while since I called my beloved, a guest
Karta hoon jama'a fir jigar-e-lakht-lakht ko
Again, I gather the scattered pieces of my heart
Arsa hua hai daawat-e-mizhgaan kiye hue
It's been a while since my eyelids have been given the treat of tears
Fir waz'a-e-'ehtiyaat se rukane laga hai dam
Again, I feel uncomfortable of observing the wordly etiquette
Barson hue hain chaak girebaan kiye hue
It's been years since I have given way to my passion of sorrows for you
Trans: Ranjana/????
This Ghazal consists of fifteen verses, only three were sung by Mehndi Hassan:
Treated as in partying. Ghalib's heart has broken into many pieces once
again, due to some sad news. It's been a while since he last cried. Now, the
news is so bad that he won't stop crying - a real treat for his eyelids.
A person who tears up his shirt is either mad, or clamours because of pitiable
state of affairs. Ghalib has, again, been hiding his actual state of
affairs of penury and sorrow, thanks to his careful behaviour. His normal
nature should have been to tear up his shirt. He is feeling ill at ease in
his mind, to such an extent that he is choking from it.
When a man cries, he either feels depressed, or consoles himself saying
'..no, this is not the way. i have to do something. crying is not the
solution'. Ghalib is in the latter frame of mind. His repeated
crying (josh-e-ashq), has steeled him and he has the determination, now, to
face a storm. So he tells himself 'Don't tease me and make me cry again. I
sit with a determination of facing a storm'.
Will get back to this one for trans for the second verse:

Joannie, eight more selections by Mehndi Hassan, then we showcase another Ghazal Great....Ghulam Ali.
So much enjoyment in this ghazal thread, I find myself going back to Jagjit Singh's selections, ever so often.

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
The gathering is glowing due to the brilliant presence of my beloved
Dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam
Just as the garden is aflame with the fiery beauty of the flower
Hairat Guruur-e-husn se shokhii se iztaraab
Steeped in vain of its own beauty and in mischevious ways
Dil ne bhii tere siikh liye hain chalan tamaam
Your heart too seems to have learnt all the worldly ways.
Allaah re jism-e-yaar kii khuubii se khud-ba-khud
Oh God the goodness my beloved, has spontaneously caused
Rangiiniyon mein Duub gayaa pairahan tamaam
Her attire (dress) to appear delightfully coloured
Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
The gathering is glowing due to the brilliant presence of my beloved
Dekho to husn-e-yaar kii jaaduu nigaahiyaan
Just look at the magical ways of my beloved's glance
Behosh ik nazar mein hu_ii anjuman tamaam
The entire gathering is mesmerized simply by one glance
Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam

NB This one was sung by so many singers Jagjit Singh, Abida Parveen and many other but Mehndi Hassan certainly affixes his authority to this, no wonder he leads whilst others follow. Such is the touch of genious that Mehndi Hassan provides his multitude of fans.

Lyrics: Meer Taqi Meer
Artist: mehndi hassan
Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state
Jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane, baagh to saaraa jaane hai
It is the flower that is unaware, but all the bower knows
Chaaragari beemari-e-dil ki rasm-e-shahr-e-husn nahin,
It is not their way, to heal: these denizens of the city of love
Warna dilbar naadaan bhi is dard ka chaara jaane hai
Yet even the innocent ones know the cure to a sick heart
Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state
Mehr-o-wafa-o-lutf-o-inaayat, ek se waaqif in mein nahin,
Not one here knows of kindness, loyalty, grace or generosity
Aur to sab kuch tanz-o-kanaya, ramz-o-ishaara jaane hai
Cruelty, sarcasm, mockery and taunts, of these they know
Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state
Will put this in its right perspective later:
NB This Ghazal has like about eleven or twelve verses, but only three were sung by MH
We shall try to bring you the explanation in its entirety as the poet meant it to be:

Not one here knows of kindness, loyalty, grace or generosity
Aur to sab kuch tanz-o-kanaya, ramz-o-ishaara jaane hai
Cruelty, sarcasm, mockery and taunts, of these they know
Patta patta, boota boota, haal hamaaraa jaane hai,
Every leaf and every shrub here knows of my state
Jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane, baagh to saaraa jaane hai
It is the flower that is unaware, but all the bower knows
Aage us mutkabbar ke ham Khuda Khuda kiya karte hain,
We prostrated before the arrogant one, called him ˜Khuda'
Kab maujud Khuda ko woh maghrur khud-aara jaane hai
In the name of God, what does that insolent one know of Him
Aashiq saa to saada koi aur na hoga duniya mein,
There is no one in the world quite as naïve as a lover
Ji ke zian ko ishq mein uske apna waara jaane hai
The squandering of his heart he sees as ecstasy
Aashiq to murda hai hamesha ji uthta hai dekhe use,
He is but a corpse, the lover, but see! he lives again
Yaar ke aa jaane ko yakaayak umr do baara jaane hai
She has come of a sudden and it is another lease on life
Kya kya fitne sar par uske laata hai maashooq apnaa
What disasters our lover brings down on his own head,
Jis bedil betaab-o-tavaan ko ishq ka maaraa jaane hai
That restless, listless soul we had given up as lost
Tashna-e-khun hai, apna kitna ˜Mir' bhi naadaan, talkhi-kash,
Parched for blood he is, and ˜Mir' the simpleton
Damdaar aab-e-tegh ko uske aab-e-gawara jaane hai
Thinks the sharp edge of a blade an elixir
Will get Ranjana expertise on these verses:
Yaahi shikaar-farebi par magroor hai woh sayyad bachcha
Ta'er udte hawa men saare apni ussaara jaane hai
[Yaahi = this; shikaar = prey; farebi = deceitful; magroor = arrogant; sayyad = hunter; ussara = limitless, endless]
Rakhnon se deewaar-e-chaman ke munh ko le hai chipaa ya'ani
Un suraakhon ke tuk rahne ko sou ka nazaaraa jaane hai
[rakhna = gap; deewar-e-chaman = garden wall; suraakh = hole, aperture; sou = ?; souq?]
Lagne na de bas ho to uske gohar-e-gosh ke baale tak
Usko falak chashm-e-mai-o-khor ki teetli ka taaraa jaane hai
[gohar = pearl; gosh = ear; baale = earring; falak = sky; chashm = eye; mai = wine]
Mir at his most convoluted. An earring, a pearl, a winejar and a star in the sky - there are all these elements; and whether Mir means to see a pearl hanging from an earlobe through the spout of a winejar and perceives it as a star in the sky, or the other way round, I have no idea. I may add, after reading it a sufficient number of times, I no longer care.

..
A lovely ghazal indeed, but these high Urdu is loaded with Persian, and not easy to comprehend , thanks for the translation. All these poets are masters of Persian as well.

The Mughuls (1526-1857 AD)
The most important, politically and culturally, dynasty of Indian muslim kings was that of Mughals. Mughal dynasty started with Babar defeating Ibrahim Lodhi in 1526 and continued till Aurangzeb's death in 1707. Minor mughal kings ruled Delhi until 1857, when Bahadur Shah Zafar was finally banished to Rangoon. These years saw the emergence of Dhrupad as the main style of music in the courts of north India. That was also the beginning of Khayal and Ghazal as styles of music which came into prominence later.
Nayak Bhakshu, an eminent Dhrupad singer and composer served in the court of Humayun the second emperor after Babar. It was during this period that Dhrupad became the court music of Mughal emperors. Later a thousand of his lyrics were collected under orders from Emeror Shah Jahan and are called Sahasras or Hazar Dhurpad.
During the reign of Akbar several prominent dhrupad artists flourished. Most prominent among them was Tansen. Tansen is credited with reshaping the entire of Dhruvapada music by the addition of new Persian ornamentations in Meend, Gamaka etc. He is also credited with the development of the Rabab (Rudra-Veena). Tansen also created many new ragas which, up till now, are regarded as the foremost ragas of Northern India. Some of these are noteworthy, e.g. Darbari Kanada, Darbari Todi, Miya ki Malhar, Miya ki Sarang. Other famous musicians in Akbar's court were Baiju Bawra, Ramdas and Tanrang. Just like Amir Khusro, with Tansen it is difficult to separate myth from reality. Stories and myths about him and his duels with Baiju Bawra abound. Almost every major Gharana of present day Hindustani trace their lineage to Tansen. Swami Haridas of Brindavan who is considered the guru of Tansen was an influential musician during that time.
Akbar's son Jahangir(1605-1627) and grandson Shah Jahan(1627-1658) were both great patrons of art and music flourished under their rule. Various disciples of Swami Haridas (and Tansen) spreadout and became court musicians in various small kingdom's in the Mughal empire like Jaipur, Punjab, Gwalior, Lucknow etc. The famous Seni Gharanas were founded by the sons of son-in-law of Tansen.
Aurangzeb (1658-1707), a religious fanatic, During the tenth year of his reign, banned music. He forbade its presence in court as well as all public performances. Court officials entered households and smashed musical instruments. Aurangzeb's dislike of music is well illustrated in a common story. It appears that during his administration a group of musicians, disheartened with their lack of patronage, took some musical instruments and wrapped them in the manner of a corpse and held a funeral procession in protest. Aurangzeb enquires about the procession and is told it is a burial to signify the death of music. Whereupon it is said that the emperor declares, "Good! bury it so deep that never a sound should be heard again". Musicians either went underground or simply took up other means of livelihood. The situation can be compared to the fate of Iranian music after the Islamic revolution of 1979.
Mughal empire broke up soon after the death of Aurangzeb. Provential governors declared independence and Mughal emperor's authority didn't reach far outside Delhi's redfort. But, music did come back to the court in Delhi. Beginning of Khayal style of Hindustani music can be traced to the court of Muhammad Shah 'Rangile' (1720-1748). Popularly called Rangile because of his patronage of arts. But repeated external attacks on the empire by Afghans, Persians and others was not conducive to it. The last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II (1837-1857) was a great patron of music and literature. Music, esp. Ghazals, flourished in his court. With the defeat of Indian kings in the first was of independence, the emperor was exiled to Rangoon bringing an end to the Mughal empire and 650 years of Muslim rule in Delhi.
.

This one was also done by Mehndi Hassan and quite a few other artiste and believe me, it was very popular:
GHAZAL:UZR AANE MEIN BHI HAI AUR BULAATE:
MEHNDI HASSAN:
POET: DAAG DEHLAVI:
UZR AANE MEIN BHI HAI AUR BULAATE BHI NAHIN
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Baa'is-e-tark-e-mulaaqaat bataate bhi nahin
You don't inform me of the reasons for terminating relations, either!
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Kya kaha phir toh kaho "Hum nahin sunte teri"
What did you say? Please repeat, "I do not listen to you."
Nahin suntey toh hum aiso ko bataatey bhi nahin
If you do not listen, I also do not speak to such people, either!
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Khoob parda hai ke chilaman se lage baithe hain
There is much hidden when you are sitting alongside the curtain
Saaf chupte bhi nahi saamane aate bhi nahin
You do not clearly hide and do not come forward, either!
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Ho chuka qata ta'lluq toh jafaayen kyon hon
If the relation has been severed, then why continue oppressions?
Jinko matalab nahin rahataa hai woh sataate bhi nahin
Those who [truly] no longer have a reason to, do not [further] tease, either!
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Zist se tang ho ae Daag toh jeetey kyon hon
If you are sick of life, O Daag, then why do you live?
Jaan pyari bhi nahin jaan se jaate bhi nahin
Life is not valuable to you and you do not leave it, either!
Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Translation:??????
Daag's wit is so refreshing.. he makes sentimental points in the most brilliant of ways. The things he says in this poem, had they been said by someone else might sound depressing. His choice of wordings is so cutting... but one never gets bored or down while reading/listening. Truly a remarkable poet!

GHAZALS: MOHABAT KARNE WALAY KAM NO HOGE
MEHNDI HASSAN:
POET: HAFEEZ HOSHIAPURI
(22) MOHABAT KARNE WALAY KAM NA HOGI:
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
Zamaane bhar ke Ghum yaa ik teraa Ghum
One can take on the sorrows caused by the world or just by you
Ye Ghum hogaa to kitane Ghum na honge
How many sorrows I shall avoid by choosing the sorrows caused by you
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
Agar tuu ittafaaqan mil bhii jaaye
Even if we incidentally meet
Terii furqat ke sadamein kam na honge
The trauma of our separation will not lessen
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
Dilon ki ulajhanein badatii raheingii
The complications of the heart will keep on increasing
Agar kuchh mashvare baaham na honge
If we do not not take each other's council
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
Mohabbat karanevaale kam na honge
There will be no scarcity of people who will love you
'Hafeez' un se main jitanaa bad_gumaaN huun
Hafeez, the extent to which I am doubtful of her (love/intention)
Vo mujh se is qadar barham na honge
They certainly would not be as upset with me
Terii mahafil mein lekin ham na honge
I will be the one missing from your party (presence)
