(25) SHAAM SE AANKH ME NAMII SI HAI

Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night
Aaj phir aap ki kami si hai
Once again today, I miss you

Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night

Dafan kar do humay to sans aye
bury me so that I ca breathe again
Der say saans kuch thhamii si hai
recently, my breath has been somewhat halting

Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night

kaun patthraa gaya hai aankhon me
whose image has frozen in my view
barf palkon me kyun jamii si hai
why is ice forming on my eyelids?

Shaam se aankh mein namii si hai
My eyes have been teary since last night

It has been a long haul to finish the Asha Bhosle collection in our Ghazal series. It was a pleasure. Thank you very much for your help, ASJ.

The versatile singing Diva has done some very good renditions in this genre. Witness her recent Carnegie Hall performance, the lady is still going strong at 75. Hats off, Ashaji. We are beholden to you for years of dazzling entertainment. You have brought joy to all of us.

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Talat Mahmood and his band of trusty musicians get ready to storm the West Indies !

IN TRINIDAD:

In 1968, Talat landed to a hero's welcome in Trinidad for the West Indies Concert Tour. Thousands of fans thronged the airport. Wearing Talat Fan Club badges, waving Talat Flags and Talat Photo's, they lined the roads leading from the airport to the city. An open limousine drove Talat through a sea of his fans. The local papers headlined the concerts at Naparima Bowl, where not even boxing matches had witnessed such a frenzy for the purchase of concert tickets. The extremely popular group ' West Indies Steel Band' composed a Calypso style song " Talat Mahmood we are proud and glad, to have a personality like you here in Trinidad " to welcome Talat to Trinidad. This song was played over and over on the radio, at the airport and in all music shops in West Indies to welcome Talat to their country ! Talat's concerts at Skinner Park and Jean Pierre Complex are still talked of even today !

TALAT MAHMOOD: THE GOLDEN VOICE:

Towards the late 60's the filmi ghazals and good romantic songs gave way to the electronic rhythms of the disco generation. Disliking the new trend towards loud meaningless music, Talat decided to cut down his film singing assignments but continued his non-film ghazal recordings.

As a singer, Talat has already secured a place in history. Over the years, the King of Ghazals has created a catalogue of songs for generations to come. His fan following straddles the globe. He strides like a colossus in the field of ghazals - a KING whose name is surpassed by none !!!

Close buddies through life !
Talat with music director Madan Mohan

Talat first met music director Madan Mohan when Madan came to live in Lucknow for a while. Their love for ghazals made them good friends. In a friendly gesture, Madan promised Talat that once he went back to Bombay and signed on films as a music director he would definitely use Talat's voice. Madan was true to his promise and Talat and Madan teamed up for many hits in many films including Jahan Ara, Madhosh, Ashiana, Haqeeqat and others. They enjoyed a close bond of friendship throughout their lives.

TIMES OF INDIA REMEMBERS TALAT MAHMOOD SOME TEN YEARS AGO ON THE ANNIVERSAY OF HIS DEMISE:

Remembering Talat Mahmood
9 May 2008, 0331 hrs IST,Avijit Ghosh,TNN

Talat Mahmood (TOI Photo)
NEW DELHI: In his quivering voice you could hear the rustle of silk and the muffled sound of a broken heart. Few singers could put the listener in a blue mood like Talat Mahmood, who passed away on May 9 exactly 10 years ago.

And thanks to a website created by his son Khalid that gets about 1,50,000 hits every week from Indians and Pakistanis all over the world - "and a few Israelis", Khalid adds - his memory is fresh as ever.

"Talat saab came from Lucknow and his Urdu pronunciation was perfect. He could exactly reproduce a song the way a composer had conjured up in his mind. He was an original singer whose distinctive voice was near impossible to duplicate," recalls masterclass music director Khayyam.

One of the veteran music composer's memorable compositions - Shaam-e-gham ki kasam (film: Footpath) - was sung by Talat, also known as king of ghazals. Khayyam recalls that in that memorable song he had experimented with the orchestration by not using any rhythm instrument like tabla.

"We used a piano, guitar and solo vox, a basic version of the synthesizer used in those days. Recording the number took plenty of time. But Talat saab ke mathe pe shikan nahi aayee," he says.

Senior lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri remembers a recording with the singer. The song was Zindagi kis mod pe laayi mujhe, from the film "Diwali ki Raat". Snehal Bhatkar was the music director. Says Lyallpuri, "We had only two musicians at the rehearsal. They were playing the tabla and the sitar. But the producer liked his singing so much that he said, there is no need for any other instrument. We recorded the song with just those two instruments."

Lyallpuri remembers Talat as an extremely soft spoken man. Which Khayyam affirms. "He was a perfect
gentleman. With him there was no loose talk. He was always well-dressed: his shoes shining and his trousers perfectly creased."

To honour his father's memory, Khalid Mahmood set up a website, talatmahmood.net, just a few months after the singer's death in 1998 at the age of 74. Apart from the huge number hits every day, he also gets about 200-300 emails every week.

"The choice for me was between doing a book and setting up a website. I settled for the latter because it is more accessible," says Khalid.

Talat recorded his first track way back in 1941 and sang around 750 songs in 12 languages. He also acted in over a dozen movies such as "Dil-e-Nadaan", "Lala Rukh" and "Ek Gaon Ki Kahani".

Few know that the singer-actor aroused mass hysteria when he arrived in Trinidad in West Indies on a concert tour in 1968. Fans thronged the roads from the airport to the city. The local group, West Indies Steel Band, composed a Calypso track in his honour. They sang, "Talat Mahmood we are proud and glad, to have a personality like you here in Trinidad."

Talat is long gone. But as long as the human heart knows how to fall in love and emerge with ache, his velvet
voice will live on.

PRETTY AS A PICTURE – MADHURI DIXIT

TASVEER BANATA HOON

tasveer banata hoon, tasveer nahiin banatii
I am drawing your picture, but it does not work
ek khwaab saa dekhaa hai, taabiir nahiin banatii
The dream I saw, it refuses to become reality

bedard mohabbat kaa itanaa saa hain afasaanaa
The story of this cruel love is not long
nazaron se milii nazare, main ho gaya diiwaanaa
Your eyes met mine, and I went crazy
ab dil ke bahalane kii, tadbiir nahiin banatii
Now there appears to be no way to appease my heart

dam bhar ke liye merii duniyaan mein chale aao
Come into my world for just a moment
tarasii huyii aakhon ko phir shakl dikhaa jaao
Show your face once more to my longing eyes
mujh se to merii bigadii takadiir nahiin banatii
I cannot fix my broken fortune on my own

1) TASVEER TERI DIL MERA BEHLA NA SAKEGI:

Tasviir terii dil meraa bahalaa na sakegii
Your photo cannot please my heart
Ye terii tarah mujh se to sharmaa na sakegii
This can never become shy in front of me like you

Main baat karuungaa to ye khaamosh rahegii
If I speak to it, it would remain silent
Siine se lagaa luu.Ngaa to ye kuchh na kahegii
It will say nothing when I clasp it to my breast
Aaraam vo kyaa degii jo taDapaa na sakegii
How can it give me solace when it cannot make me suffer

Ye aankhein hain Taharii huiin, chanchal vo nigaahein
These eyes are still, and those looks are playful
Ye haath hain sahame huye aur mast vo baahein
These hands are hesitant, and those arms are intoxicating
Parachhaa_ii to insaan ke kaam aa na sakegii
A mere image can be of no use to a real person

In honthon ko fayyaaz main kuchh de na sakuungaa
I will not be able to give anything of value to these lips
Is zulf ko main haath mein bhii le na sakuungaa
I will not be able to take these tresses in my hands
Ulajhii hu_ii raatoon ko ye sulajhaa na sakegii
It cannot calm my troubled nights

3) SEENE MEIN SULAGTE HAIN ARMAAN

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan aankho mein udaasi chhaayi hai
Desires kindle in the heart sorrow is entrenched in my eyes
Ye aaj teri duniya se hamein Taqdeer kaha le aayi hai
Today from your world where has fate brought me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Kuchh aankh mein aansoo baaki hain (Jo mere gham ke saathi hain) 2
Some tears in the eyes are still left the friends of my grief
(Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain)2 Bas main hu meri tanhaai hai
There is the heart but no desire of the heart just me and my lonliness

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Na tujhse gila koyi hamko na koyi shikaayat duniya se
I don't have to blame you no complaints to the world
(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
When the destination was four steps away fate has pushed me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Ek aisi aag lagi man mein jeene bhi na de marne bhi na de
Some type of fire was lit in my heart it won't let me live, it won't let me die
(Chup hu to kaleja jalta hai)2 Bolu to teri ruswaayi hai
If I am silent, my chest burns if I talk, then it will be your disgrace

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Trans:Madhuri Dixit

N.B. Ab dil hain na dil ke armaan hain
now there is no heart, and no hopes, just me and my loneliness

(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
with the end just a few steps away, my fate has suffered a blow
