32) YUN SAJAA CHAND KE JHALKA TERE ANDAAZ KA RANG
(Yuun saja chaand)2 ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed
Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed
Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
(Saayaa-e-chashm mein hairaan rukh-e-roshan ka jamaal)2
Under the eyes, the beauty of the blushing cheeks
Surkhi-e-lab mein pareshaan teri aawaaz ka rang
In the redness of your lips quivered the color of your voice
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed
Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
(Be-piye huun ke agar lutf karo aakhir-e-shab)2
I have not drunk, but if it pleases you, at the end of the night
Shishaa-e-mai mein dhale subah ke aaghaaz ka rang
Let the color of the dawn blend in the goblet of wine
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed
Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
(Chang-o-nerang pe the apne lahoo ke dum se)2
We were in rapture with the song in our hearts
Dil ne lay badli to madhaam hua har saaz ka rang
When the heart changed its beat, all the instruments got muted
Yuun faza mahaki ke badala mere hamaraaz ka rang
The fragrance of the bloom spread, and my lover's color changed
Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled

Yuun saja chaand ke jhalaka tere andaaz ka rang
Such was the light of the moon, the color of your style sparkled
[Ending verse in Faiz' original poem]
Ek sukhan aur ke phir rang-e-takallum tera
(I), a poet, and your way of speaking
Harf-e-sadah ko inayat kare aejaaz ka rang
It lends magic to even the simplest of sounds

33) RUUDAD E MOHABAT KYA KAHIYE
(Ruudaad-e-mohabbat kya kahiye)2 kuchh yaad rahi kuchh bhuul gaye
How shall I describe my love affair? I remember some of it, and forget some
(Do din ki masarrat kya kahiye)2 kuchh yaad rahi kuchh bhuul gaye
The two days of bliss, what can I say? I remember some of it, forget some
Ruudaad-e-mohabbat (kya kahiye)2
How shall I describe my love affair?
(Jab jaam diya tha saaqi ne, jab daur chala tha mahafil mein)2
Whan the cup bearer poured the wine, when the rounds were going at the party,
(Wo hosh ke saath kya kahiye)2 kuchh yaad rahi kuchh bhuul gaye
Still in my senses, but what to say? I remember some of it, forget some
Ruudaad-e-mohabbat (kya kahiye)2
How shall I describe my love affair?
(Ehasaas ke maikhaane me.n kahaan ab fitr-o-nazar ki kandiilen)2
In these inebriated feelings, there is no thought of charity or prayer
(Aalaam ki shiddat kya kahiye)2 kuchh yaad rahi kuchh bhuul gaye
The intensity of the agonies, what can I say? I remember some of it, forget some
Ruudaad-e-mohabbat (kya kahiye)2
How shall I describe my love affair?
(Ab apani haqiqat bhi ' saagar', be-rabt kahaani lagati hai)2
Even Sagar's own reality seems incongruous now
(Duniya ki haqiqat kya kahiye)2 kuchh yaad rahi kuchh bhuul gaye
The reality of the world, what can I say? I remember some of it, forget some

THE POET: SAGHAR SIDDIQUI:
In his last few years he roamed the streets of Lahore in the garb of a faqir, with unshaved beard, dirt in his hair, and bare feet. Even in some of his ghazals, he uses the word faqir or darvesh for himself. He passed his nights outside the closed shops of Chowk Paisa Akhbaar (called so since the first newspapers were sold there for a paisa each) behind Government College Lahore, near the New Anarkali Bazaar.
Sometimes he would have to sell his ghazals to other poets for a few rupees. He would use the waste paper spread around to light fires to stay warm during winter nights. There, on the street, he passed away in Lahore on 19 July 1974 at age 46. His dead body was found one early morning outside one of the shops. Despite his shattered life, some of his verses (ash'aar) are among the best in Urdu poetry. It is unbelievable that he kept his inner self so pure and so transcending.

34) DARD JAB TERI ATA HAI TO GILA KISSE KAREIN
(Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein)2
Since the pain is your gift, to whom could I complain?
Hijr jab tuune diya ho to mila kisse karein
The loneliness was given by you, so who shall be my companion?
Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein
Since the pain is your gift, to whom could I complain?
(Aks bikhara hai tera tuut ke aayiine ke saath)2
Your image has shattered, along with the broken mirror
Ho gayi zakhm nazar aks chuna kisse karein
My sight is wounded, how shall I put it together again?
Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein
Since the pain is your gift, to whom could I complain?
(Main safar mein huun mere saath judaayii teri)2
I am on my journey, your separation is my companion
Hamasafar gham hain to phir kisako juda kisse karein
When my fellow traveler is sorrow, who should be separated from whom?
Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein
Since the pain is your gift, to whom could I complain?
(Khil uthe gul ya khule dast-e-hinaayii tere)2
Did the rose just bloom, or did your hanna'ed palm open?
Har taraf tuu hai to phir tera pata kisse karein
When you are everywhere, whom shall I ask where you are?
Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein
Since the pain is your gift, to whom could I complain?
(Tere lab teri nigaahein tera aariz teri zulf)2
Your lips, your looks, your cheeks, your tresses
Itane zinda hain to is dil ko rihaa kisse karein
With all these around, from which could I free my heart?
(Dard jab teri ata hai to gila kisse karein)2

(Hairaton ke silsile soz-e-nihan tak aa gaye)2
Never-ending surprises, you have reached my innermost feelings
Ham to dil tak chaahate the, tum to jaan tak aa gaye
I wished you would come into my heart, but you have reached into my very soul
Hairaton ke silsile soz-e-nihan tak aa gaye
Never-ending surprises, you have reached my innermost feelings
(Zulf mein khushbuu na thi ya rang aariz mein na tha)2
The fragrance from my tresses was gone, so was the color from my cheeks
Aap kisaki justajuu mein gulasitaan tak aa gaye
Whom were you seeking, that you have come as far as the garden?
Hairaton ke silsile soz-e-nihan tak aa gaye
Never-ending surprises, you have reached my innermost feelings
(Khud tumhein chaak-e-garebaa.n ka sha_uur aa jaayega)2
You will get to know what is inside my heart
Tum wahaan tak aa to jaao ham jahaan tak aa gaye
Just come along to where I have reached so far
Hairaton ke silsile soz-e-nihan tak aa gaye
Never-ending surprises, you have reached my innermost feelings
(Unki palakon pe sitaare apane honton pe hansii)2
Stars (teardrops) on his eyelids, a smile on my lips,
Qissa-e-gham kahate kahate ham yahaan tak aa gaye
Just telling sad stories, we reached thus far already
Ham to dil tak chaahate the, tum to jaan tak aa gaye

36) KAROON NA YAAD MAGAR KIS TARHA:
(Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use)2
I could stop remembering her, but how could I ever forget her?
Ghazal bahana karoon aur gun-gunaoon use
I can pretend she is a love song, and sing on
Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use
I could stop remembering her, but how could I ever forget her?
Karoon na yaad
I could stop remembering her
(Woh khaar khaar hai shaakh-e-gulab kii manind)2
She is all thorns, just like a rose branch,
Main zakhm zakhm hoon, phir bhi gale lagaoon use
I am all wounds, yet I would embrace her
Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use
I could stop remembering her, but how could I ever forget her?
Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use
I could stop remembering her, but how could I ever forget her?
Karoon na yaad
I could stop remembering her
(Yeh log tazkiren karte hain apne logon ke)2
These people keep talking about their loves,
Main kaise baat karoon, aur kahan se laoon use
How shall I speak, and from where shall I produce her?
Karoon na yaad magar kis tarha bhulaoon use
I could stop remembering her, but how could I ever forget her?
Karoon na yaad
I could stop remembering her
(Jo humsafar sar-e-manzil bichad raha hai ËFaraz')2
The companion who leaves Faraz at the destination,
Ajab nahin hai agar yaad bhi na aaoon use
It is not surprising if she does not even remember me

(Neeyat-e-shauq bhar na jaaye kahiin)2
May my heart's desire never be sated
Tu bhi dil say utar na jaaye kahiin
May you never leave my heart
Neeyat-e-shauq bhar na jaaye kahiin
May my heart's desire never be sated
(Aaj dekha hai tujh ko dair kay baad)2
Today I saw you after such a long time
Aaj ka din guzar na jaaye kahiin
I hope today never ends
Tu bhi dil say utar na jaaye kahiin
May you never leave my heart
Neeyat-e-shauq bhar na jaaye kahiin
May my heart's desire never be sated
(Na mila kar udaas logon se)2
Do not mingle with the sad folks
Husn tera bikhar na jaaye kahiin
Lest your beauty wither under their spell
Tu bhi dil say utar na jaaye kahiin
May you never leave my heart
Neeyat-e-shauq bhar na jaaye kahiin
May my heart's desire never be sated
(Aarzoo hai ke tu yahaaN aaye)2
I wish that you would come over here
Aur phir umr bhar na jaaye kahiin
And life never comes to an end
Tu bhi dil say utar na jaaye kahiin
May you never leave my heart
Neeyat-e-shauq bhar na jaaye kahiin
May my heart's desire never be sated
(Aao kuch dair ro hi leN 'Nasir')2
Come, Nasir, let me cry for a while
Phir yeh dariya utar na jaaye kahiin
And let this stream of tears never dry up
Tu bhi dil say utar na jaaye kahiin

THE POET: NASIR KAZMI
Syed Nasir Raza Kazmi, (1925â1972) was a renowned Urdu poet of Pakistan. He was one of the greatest poets of this era, especially in the use of "ista'aaray" and "chhotee beher".
Kazmi was born on December 8, 1925 at Ambala in British India. He was educated at Ambala, Simla and Lahore. He returned to Ambala in 1945 and started looking after his ancestral land. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he came to Lahore. He did some journalistic work with Auraq-e-Nau as an editor and became editor-in-chief of the magazine Humayun in 1952. Later he was associated with Radio Pakistan, Lahore and other literary publications and organizations.
Nasir Kazmi started his poetic life in 1940 by following the style of Akhtar Sherani and wrote romantic poems and sonnets. Later he began writing ghazals under the guidance of Hafeez Hoshyarpuri. He was a great admirer of Mir Taqi Mir and probably the melancholy and "Ehsaas-e-Mehroomi" in his poetry was a direct result of that. His tutor in poetry was Hafeez Hoshyarpuri, who himself used a lot of symbols from nature in his poems.

OUR NEXT FEATURED ALBUM BY ASHAJI IS TITLED "ASHA"
In this album, Ashaji sings ghazals made famous by Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, and Jagjit Singh, Ghazals titled: Aaj jaane ki zid na karo, Aawargi, Chupke-chupke, Ranjish hi sahi, Dil mein ek lehar si, and Sarakti jaye rukh se naqab. These Ghazals are rearranged musically by adding a lot of jazz elements, and of course Asha Bhonsles voice instead of the original voice.
Asj's note:
The Official Word is that Asha should not have meddle with the classics,
but it is just what it is, that is "A Tribute to the Meastros"

Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo [Lyrics: Fayyaz Hashmi, Original music: Nisar Bazmi] A cry of separation and pain form the underlining theme of the Fayyaz Hasmi written number 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo'. The classic is turned into a soft number by Pandit Somesh Mathur who does a lot with a synthesizer to make the track sound contemporary and hence sound exciting to current generation as well. Purists may not be really bowled over by a slight touch up given to the ghazal but the intent to make the track reach out to wider audience is readily met.
It is interesting to note that this one was originally done by Habib Wale Mohammad, and later Farida Khanum made a good ghazal even better.

(Aaj jaane ki zid na karo)2
Tonight, don't insist on leaving
Yunhi pehlu mein beithey raho
Sit here close to me
Haaye mar jaayein ge
Else I will die or
Hum to lutt jaayein ge
I will be looted
Aisi baatein kiya na karo
Don't say such things
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don't insist on leaving
Tumhi socho zara
Just ponder for a second
Kyu'n na rokein tumhey
Why shouldn't I stop you?
Jaan jaati hai jab uth ke jaatey ho tum
When my life leaves every time you go
Tum ko apni qasam jaan-e-jaa'n
I swear to you, my love
Baat itni meri maan lo
Listen to my one request
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don't insist on leaving
Waqt ki qaed mein zindagi hai magar
Life is trapped in time's prison but
Chand gharriya'n yahi hain jo aazaad hain
These are the few moments that are free
Inko khho kar kaheen jaan-e-jaa\'n
By losing them, my love
Umr bhar na tarastey raho
Don't start a life of regret
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don't insist on leaving
Kitna masoom aur rangeen hai yeh sama
How innocent and colorful is the weather
Husn aur ishq ki aaj me\'raj hai
It is the reign of beauty and love
Kal ki kis ko khabar jaan-e-jaa\'n
Who knows what tomorrow will bring
Rok lo aaj ki raat ko
Let's stop this night right here
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don't insist on leaving

Wow!!!!
quote:This is so beautiful. The language of poetry and love is universal. My beloved is next to me and I love her so much. She will soon be leaving and I want her to stay here just one more night. I want to stop the hands on my watch and feel her warmth. I want her safe and warm upon her return to me.

Sarakti Jaaye Hai (Ahista Ahista) [Lyrics: Ameer Minai, Original music: Jagjit Singh] A range of Indian instruments begin 'Sarakti Jaaye Hai Rukh Se Naqab Ahista Ahista' that has a rare sensuality by means of lyrics than anything else. "What happens when anticipation turns out to be more exciting than the reality itself" - is what makes this Ameer Minai track one of the most romantic evers. The only track in the album with original music by Jagjit Singh, it is of the kinds that can be played on a low volume in your living room while spending your lazy Sunday afternoon!

Sarakatii jaaye hai rukh se naqaab ahista ahista
Sliding away from the face is the cover, very slowly
Nikalataa aa rahaa hai aaftaab ahista ahista
Coming into vision is the moon, very slowly
(Jawaan hone lage jab vo to ham se kar liyaa pardaa)2
When she entered youthfullness, then she hid behind veil
(Hayaa yakalakht aayii aur shabaab ahista ahista)2
(Suddenly appeared modesty/shame and youthfullness, very slowly)
Nikalataa aa rahaa hai aaftaab ahista ahista
Coming into vision is the moon, very slowly
Sarakatii jaaye hai rukh se naqaab ahista ahista
Sliding away from the face is the cover, very slowly
Shabefurkat kaa jaagaa huun farishton ab to sone do
Since the night of separation I am awake, angels[of death] let me sleep now
Kabhii fursat men kar lenaa hisaab ahista ahista
Take account of everything later, when you have time, but slowly
Savaalevasl par unako uduu kaa Khauf hai itanaa
She has passion for conversation but so much afraid of the villian
Dabe honThon se dete hain javaab aahistaa aahistaa
She replies with clenched lips, very slowly
Hamaare aur tumhaare pyar men bas fark hai itanaa
There is just this much difference in my and your love
Idhar to jaldii jaldii hai udhar aahistaa aahistaa
This side is a rush but from your side is slow
(Vo bedardii se sar kaate "ameer" aur main kahuun un se)2
She is beheading me, [Ameer] without passion and I am telling her
Huzuur aahistaa aahistaa, janaab ahista ahista
Your highness! slowly, Your Honor! do it slowly
Nikalataa aa rahaa hai aaftaab ahista ahista

Dil Mein Ek Lehar Si: [Lyrics: Nasir Kazmi, Original music: Ghulam Ali] Great experience while cherishing Ashaji's evergreen vocals continues with 'Dil Mein Ek Lehar Si'. Brilliantly worded by Nasir Kazmi, this ghazal would be enjoyed by every age group and would soon be loved all over again, especially with the campus crowds who love playing on such music along with the studies. Highly enjoyable, one wonders why no one ever thought of coming up with these eternal tracks in such modern day version before?

40) DIL MAY EK LEHER SI UTHI HAIN ABHI
(Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi)2
A ripple has risen in my heart,
Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Shor barpaa hai khana-e-dil mein)2
I hear a tumultous roar in my heart
(Koi deewaar si girii hai abhi)2
As if some wall has fallen just now
Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Waqt accha bhi ayegaa Naasir)2
(Hum na kar zindagi phare hai abhi)2
???????
Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Kuch to naazuk mizaaj hai hum bhi)2
I have a delicate disposition, too
(Aur ye chot bhi nayee hai abhi)2
And this wound is still fresh
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Yaad ki be-nishan jazeeron se)2
From the uncharted islands of my memory,
(Teri aawaaz aa rahi hai abhi)2
I now hear your voice rising forth
(Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi)2
A new kind of breeze is blowing
Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
(Shahar ki be-chiraagh galiyon mein)3
In the darkened streets of the city,
(Zindagi tujh ko dhoondati hai abhi)2
My soul searches for you

LEGENDARY: ASHA BHOSLE
In Ashaji own words on the album "Asha"
"I knew I was looking for trouble when I decided to re-do the ghazals of greats -- Mehdi Hassan, Farida Khannum, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh," she says. "But my life is nothing, if not a series of challenges. The danger of purists taking offence was always there. Ab dekhiye na. Aaj kal kya hota hai, koi bhi kisika gana uthke gaane lagta hai. (Nowadays, people are plagiarising songs left, right and centre). They just take a big singer's number and make it small, with clothes to match, in the music video, matak-matak ke."
Bhosle insists that she hasn't done any re-mixes in Asha. "I haven't tampered with notes or lyrics. Only the instruments have been modernised. As for the cynics, they're bound to have their say. When some years ago, I released the album Rahul & I, where I sang R.D. Burman songs, I was criticised even by those who were my admirers. But I remember a four-year-old boy came up to me at a restaurant and asked me to sing 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja'. I was so happy that a new generation would be familiarised with R.D.'s tunes."

LEGENDARY: ASHA BHOSLE
When it comes to re-doing classics, she is no stranger to controversies.
She laughs, "I had once done an album of Noorjehan's songs called Kashish. Main bahut dar gayi thi. (I was very scared) I phoned Noorjehan for her consent. She retorted, 'Badi himmat hai tum mein'.
"After recording the songs, I took the cassette to her home in London," she continues. "She looked at me angrily and told me to come back the next day. The next day she complimented me, 'Shabaash Beta. Jo cheez main nahin keh saki woh tum keh gayi ho (What I could not say, you have).' I touched her feet and sought her blessings. I hope after listening to Asha, the ghazal greats respond the same way."
