TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:
POET: DAAGH DEHLVI
Nawab Mirza Khan (1831â1905) commonly known as Daagh Dehlvi, was an outstanding Mughal poet famous for his Urdu Ghazals and belonged to the Delhi school ofUrdu Poetry. He wrote poems and ghazals under the takhallus (Urdu word for name of fame) Daagh Dehlvi (the meanings of Daagh, an Urdu noun, include stain, grief and taint while Dehlvi means belonging to or from Delhi).
Life
He lost his father at the age of six and was brought up by his stepfather, Mirza Muhammad Fakhroo, who was heir to Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor. On Fakhroo's death in 1865, Daagh left Delhi for Rampur where he went into government service and lived comfortably for 24 years. There followed a period of wandering and discomfort which ended when he was invited to Hyderabad in 1891. There he won his fame as an Urdu poet and lived a life of luxury. Hyderabad was a cradle to many poets of that period following the decline of Mughals in Delhi. He died in 1905 at the age of 74 in Hyderabad India.
Poetry
Daagh had started reciting poetry at the age of ten. His forte was the ghazal. His poetry does not wallow in despair. The tone of his poems is rather exuberant. He was a self-acknowledged romantic but contrary to the impression one gets from his poetry, he eschewed wine. Usage of common words and phrases and thus simplicity was distinctive of his style. His work comprises four volumes consisting of 16,000 coouplets.
Daagh mostly wrote ghazals which are sets of two-line couplets. Some of his couplets are highly quotable. For example, Tu hai harjai to apnaa bhi yehi taur sahi, tu nahin aur sahi, aur nahin, aur sahi
Having remained under patronage of highly established poet like Zaug, Daagh had numerous disciples including the poet of the East Allama Iqbal, Jagar Moradabadi, Seemab Akbarabadi and Ahsen Marehravi, though a widely quoted anecdote relates that when asked to designate his successor as the leading Urdu poet of his age, he replied Bekhudain [the two Bekhuds], referring to Bekhud Badauyuni and Bekhud Dehlvi.
His ghazals have been sung by noted ghazal singers including Ghulam Ali, Malika Pukhraj, Mehdi Hassan and abida Parveen.

11) GHAZAB KIYAA TERE VAADE PE AITABAAR KIYAA
Gazab kiyaa, tere vaade pe aitabaar kiyaa
What a blunder it was to believe in your promises
Tamaam raat qayaamat kaa intezaar kiyaa
The entire night I waited for this disaster
Hansaa hansaa ke shab-e-vasl ashk-baar kiyaa
After all the laughter, you filled out the night of union with tears
Tasalliyaan mujhe de-de ke beqaraar kiyaa
After falsely consoling and comforting me you made me restless
Ham aise mahv-e-nazaaraa na the jo hosh aataa
I was so immersed in your love, I was uncogniscent of any deceit
Magar tumhaare taGaaful ne hoshiyaar kiyaa
But it was your indifference that made me aware of your deceit
Fasaana-e-shab-e-Gam un ko ek kahaanii thhii
My tale of sadness of that night was but a story for you
Kuchh aitabaar kiyaa aur kuchh naa-aitabaar kiyaa
Like a fictional story, you believe in some and disbelieve in others
Ye kisane jalvaa hamaare sar-e-mazaar kiyaa
Who has graced the head of my tomb with their presence
Ki dil se shor uThaa, haa_e! beqaraar kiyaa
My heart has cried out, even in my grave you have made me restless
Tadap phir ai dil-e-naadaan, ki Gair kahate hain
The world is asking me again, to feel the pain, oh my innocent heart
Aakhir kuchh na banii, sabr ikhtiyaar kiyaa
When nothing worked then I took the path of patience
Bhulaa bhulaa ke jataayaa hai unako raaz-e-nihaan
In trying to forget, I have finally exposed the secret buried deep in my heart
Chhipaa chhipaa ke mohabbat ko aashakaar kiyaa
After ages of hiding I have finally revealed my love for you
Tumhen to vaadaa-e-diidaar ham se karanaa thaa
I thought I was special when I made a promise to make an appearance
Ye kyaa kiyaa ke jahaan ko ummiidavaar kiyaa
What have you done? now the whole world expects to see me
Ye dil ko taab kahaan hai ke ho maalandesh
Did this heart has the strength to doubt you and think of the consequences
Unhone vaadaa kiyaa ham ne aitabaar kiyaa
You promised and I believed you
Na puuchh dil kii haqiiqat magar ye kahate hain
Don't ask the reality of this heart, but they say
Vo beqaraar rahe jisane beqaraar kiyaa
The one who made you restless, will ramain uneasy themselves
Kuchh aage daavar-e-mahashar se hai ummiid mujhe
The only expectation I have is from God
Kuchh aap ne mere kahane kaa aitabaar kiyaa
But you did believe a bit on me

13) TUMHAARE KHAT MEIN NAYAA IK SALAAM KIS KAA THAA
Tumhaare Khat mein nayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa
There was a new greeting in your letter, who was it for?
Na thaa raqiib to aakhir vo naam kis kaa thaa
If it was not my rival, whose name was it?
Rahaa na dil mein vo be-dard aur dard rahaa
The merciless one left my heart, but the ache remained
Muqiim kaun huaa hai maqaam kis kaa thaa

Vafaa karenge nibhaayenge baat maanenge
I will remain faithful, keep my word, do as you wish,

Guzar gayaa vo zamaanaa kahiin to kis se kahiin
Those days have gone by, who will listen to me?
(Khayaal dil ko mere subah-o-shaam kis kaa thaa)
My thoughts day and night, of whom were they?
Vo qatl kar ke har kisii se puuchhate hain
She took my life, and asks everyone,
Ye kaam kis ne kiyaa hai ye kaam kis kaa thaa
Who did this, whose work was it?
Na puuchh-taachh thi kisii kii na aav-bhagat
No one asked questions, there was no warm welcome (when I came)
Tumhaari bazm mein kal ehatamaam kis kaa thaa
But who was it that got so much caring in your company yesterday?
Hamaare Khat ke to purze kiye pa.Dhaa bhii nahiin
You tore my letter to pieces, did not even read it,
suna jo tum ne baa-dil vo payaam kis kaa thaa
But you listened with all your heart, whose message was that?
Inhiin sifa'at se hotaa hai aadamii mashahuur
It is through such qualities that one achieves fame
Jo lutf aap hi karate to naam kis kaa thaa
If she is doing the favours, who is taking the credit?
Har ek se kahate hain kyaa "Daag" bevafaa nikalaa
She says to everyone, "see how unfaithful Daag turned out"

Uzr aane mein bhi hai aur bulaate bhi nahin
You hesitate to come [here] and do not call me, either
Baa'is-e-tark-e-mulaaqaat bataate bhi nahin
You don't inform me of reasons for terminating relations, either!
Kya kaha phir toh kaho "Hum nahin sunte teri"

If you do not listen, I also do not speak to such people, either!

Saaf chupte bhi nahi saamane aate bhi nahin
You do not clearly hide and do not come forward, either!

If the relation has been severed, why continue oppressions?
Jinko matalab nahin rahataa hai woh sataate bhi nahin

Daag's wit is so refreshing.. he makes sentimental points in the most brilliant of ways. The things he says in this poem, had they been said by someone else might sound depressing. His choice of wordings is so cutting... but one never gets bored or down while reading/listening. Truly a remarkable poet!

POET: FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:
FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:
Faiz Ahmad Faiz was an influential left-wing intellectual, revolutionary poet, and one of the most famous poets of the Urdu language from State of Pakistan. A rising figure and notable member of the Progressive Writers' Movement (PWM), Faiz was an avowed Marxist-communist, long associated member of Russian-backed Communist Party and was a recipient of Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union in 1962. Despite being repeatedly accused of atheism by the political and military establishment, Faiz's poetry suggested his complicated relationship with religion in general and Islam in particular. He was, nevertheless, inspired by South Asia's Sufi traditions.
Faiz was controversially named and linked by Prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan's government for hatching the conspiracy (see Rawalpindi conspiracy case) against Ali Khan's government, being Plot's central leader which was supported by left-wing military sponsor Major-General Akbar Khan. Having being arrested by Military police, Faiz among with others received a maximum sentence by JAG branch, although his sentence was commuted after the assassination Liaquat Ali Khan in 1951.
Biography
One of the foremost poets in the Indian sub-continent, Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born in Sialkot in Pakistan. He studied philosophy and English literature, but poetry and politics preoccupied him more than anything else. For writing poetry that always antagonizes the ruling Å―lite and challenges colonial and feudal values, like such rebellious writers as Ngugi of Kenya and Darwish of Palestine, Faiz had to go to jail repeatedly during both colonial and postcolonial times in Pakistan. Inspired by the Marxist ideology, Faiz's poetry exhibits a strong sense of commitment to lower-class people, yet it always maintains a unique beauty nourished by the long, rich tradition of Urdu literature. His love poems are as appealing as his political poems, and he is considered primarily responsible for shaping poetic diction in contemporary Urdu poetry. Which poems deal with love, and which ones with politics? What evidence is there that Faiz is a courageous poet? What is his attitude towards loneliness and death?
Awards
Faiz was the first Asian poet to be awarded the Lenin Peace Prize, the Soviet Union's equivalent to the Nobel Prize in 1963. He used traditional meters and rhythms to compose poetry that was a blend of Romanticism and realism. Before his death he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize.

16) MUJHSE PEHLI SI MOHABBAT MERE MEHBOOD NA MAANG
Mujh se pehli si mohabbat meray mehbub na maang
Donât ask me for the love I once gave you, my love
Mein ne samjha tha kay tu hai to darakhshaan hai hayaat
I thought if I had you, life would shine eternally for me
Tera gham hai to gham-e-dahar ka jhagdra kya hai
With your heartaches, those of the universe would fade
Teri surat se hai aalam mein bahaaron ko sabaat
Your face would bring permanence to every spring
Teri aankhon ke sivaa duniya mein rakkha kya hai
What is there to treasure in this world but your eyes?
Tu jo mil jaaye to taqdir niguun ho jaaye
If I found you, my fate would bow down to me
Yun na tha mein ne faqat chahaa tha yun ho jaaye
It was not so, merely how I wished it to be
Aur bhii dukh hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke sivaa
The times hold sorrows besides those of love
Raahaten aur bhi vasl ki raahat ke sivaa
There is happiness other than the joy of union
Anaginat sadiyon ki taarik bahimanaa talism
The dreadful magic of uncountable dark years
Resham-o-atalas-o-kamkhvaab mein bunavaaye huye
Woven in silk, satin and brocade
Jaa-ba-jaa bikate huye kuuchaa-o-baazaar mein jism
Bodies sold in every corner of the market
Khaak mein lithade huye khuun mein nahalaaye huye
Covered in dust, bathed in blood
Laut jaati hai udhar ko bhi nazar kyaa kije
Still returns my gaze in that direction, what can be done?
Ab bhi dilkash hai tera husn magar kya kije
Even now your beauty is tantalizing, but what can I do?

Going through hell, this evening of separation will be over
Hamaare ashk terii aaqabat sanwaar chale

We welcome them as friends, later their greed for power ruled
Girah mein leke garebaan kaa taar taar chale

After I left I found solace in the gallows of death.

One would think that Faizâs poems seem to portray love and longing for the beloved but they do not. They talk about social and political issues. They talk about revolution!
With his Urdu infused with Arabic-Persian and poetry that wouldn't give the message directly, I'm not surprised that Faiz completely failed to inspire revolutionary thought among ordinary Pakistanis.

Saayaa-e-chashm mein hairaan rukh-e-roshan ka jamaal

In the redness of your lips quivered the color of your voice

We were in rapture with the song in our hearts
Dil ne lay badli to madhaam hua har saaz ka rang
When the heart changed its beat, all the instruments got muted

Jo mit ke har baar phir jiye they

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:
POET: FAIZ AHMED FAIZ:
Faiz Ahmed Faiz throughout his tumultuous life, continually wrote and published, becoming the best-selling modern Urdu poet in both India and Pakistan. While his work is written in fairly strict diction, his poems maintain a casual, conversational tone, creating tension between the elite and the common, somewhat in the tradition of Ghalib, the reknowned 19th century Urdu poet. Faiz is especially celebrated for his poems in traditional Urdu forms, such as the ghazals, and his remarkable ability to expand the conventional thematic expectations to include political and social issues.
