TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

QATEEL SHIFAI:

Qateel Shifai was born on 24th December, 1919. His actual name is Aurangzeb Khan. Qateel Shifai is his nom de plume, the pen-name under which he is known in the world of Urdu poetry. "Qateel" is his "takhallus" and "Shifai" is in honour of his Ustaad Hakim Mohammed 'Shifa' whom he considered his mentor.

His father's death at an early age, forced Qateel to quit his education and start his own sporting goods shop. Success eluded him and he moved to Rawalpindi, where he worked at a transport company for a monthly salary of Rs.60. Finally in 1946, Nazir Ahmed called him to Lahore and made him the assistant editor of the monthly 'Adab-e-Latif'.

Qayeel Shifai's first ghazal was printed in the Lahore weekly 'Star', whose editor was Qamar Jalalabadi. In January 1947, a Lahore based film producer asked Qateel to pen the songs for his forthcoming film. His first film as a lyricist was "Teri Yaad". Since then he has won numerous awards as a lyricist. He has had quite a few of his poem collections published, one of which being "Mutriba" which was awarded the highest literature award in Pakistan.

Qateel's primary contribution to Urdu poetry has been to raise the standards of ghazals in films. Though this work was started by Tanvir Alvi and Sahir Ludhianvi,it has been brought to its natural conclusion by Qateel Shifai. His work brought a certain standard to ghazals in films and gave it a certain respectability. His work also brought Urdu poetry closer to the masses by using simple words, quite often words taken from Hindi.

Qateel Shifai has also been known for his collaborations with Jagjit and Chitra Singh on numerous ghazal albums.

21) DARD SE MERA DAAMAN BHARDE YA ALLAH

Dard se mera daaman bharde, ya allah

Fill my heart with pain, O Allah
Phir chahe deewana karde, ya allah

Then if you wish, turn me into a madman, O Allah

Maine tujh se chand sitare kab mange,

When did I ask for the moon and stars
Roushan dil, bedaar nazar de, ya allah
Make my heart enlightened and my eyes awakened, O Allah

Suraj si ek cheez to hum sab dekh chuke,

We have all seen a thing called the sun
Sachmuch ki ab koi saher de, ya allah
So give us some real dawn now, O Allah

Ya dharti ke zakhmon per marham rakhde,

Either relieve the pains that are there on earth
Ya mera dil patthar kar de, ya allah
Or make my heart, a heart of stone, O Allah

22) MILKAR JUDA HUEY THO NA SOYA KARENGE HUM

Milkar juda huey tho na soya karenge hum

Since we have met and seperated, we will not sleep hereafter

Ek doosre ke yaad mein roya karenge hum

In each others remembrance, we will keep crying hereafter

Aansoo chalak chalak ke sathaayenge raath bhar

Our flowing tears will keep disturbing us all night long

Moti palak palak meim piroyaa karenge hum
On each eyelash, we will string pearls/tear drops
Jab dooriyon ki yaad dilon ko jalaayegi

When thoughts, of the distance between us, will burn our hearts

Jismon ko chaandni mein bhigoya karenge hum
We will immerse/wet our bodies in the moonlight
Gar de gaya daga hamein toofan bhi 'qateel'

If the storm also deceives us 'Qateel'

Sahil pe kashtiyon ko dooboya karenge hum

We will drown our boats near the shores

23) ZINDAGI MEIN TO SABHI PYAR KIYA KARTE HAIN

Zindagii mein to sabhii pyaar kiyaa karte hain
In a lifetime, everyone loves someone
Main tau mar kar bhii merii jaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will love you even when I am dead

Tuu milaa hai to ye ehsaas hu'aa hai mujhko
Ever since I have met you, I felt that
Ye merii umr muhabbat ke liye thorii hai
This life is too short for love (expressing love to you)
Ek zaraa saa Gham-e-dauraan kaa bhii haq hai jis par
The sorrows of the world for which one should spare a thought
Main ne vo saans bhii tere liye rakh chhorii hai
Even that last breath, I have devoted to you
Tujh pe ho jaauungaa qurbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will die for you, so much I love you

Apne jazbaat mein naghmaat rachaane ke liye
To express my emotions in my songs
Main ne dharkan kii tarah dil mein basaayaa hai tujhe
I have kept you in my heart like a heartbeat
Main tasavvur bhii judaa'ii kaa bhalaa kaise karuun
How can I imagine, to be separated from you
Main ne qismat kii lakiiron se churaayaa hai tujhe
I have stole you for myself from the fate
Pyaar kaa ban ke nigehbaan tujhe chaahuungaa
I will be the caretaker for your love, so much I love you

Terii har chaap se jalte hain khayaalon mein chiraag
The sounds of your footsteps light up my thoughts
Jab bhii tuu aaye jagaataa hu'aa jaaduu aaye
Whenever you appear, it is like live magic
Tujhko chhuu luun to phir ai jaan-e-tamannaa mujhko
If I touch you, my love
Der tak apne badan se terii Khushbuu aaye
Your fragrance eminates from my body for a long time
Tuu bahaaron kaa hai unvaan tujhe chaahuungaa
You are the one that tha Spring talks about, so much I love you

24) APNAY HOTHON PAR SAJAANA CHAHTA HOON

Apnay hothon par sajaana chahta hoon,

I want to talk about you all the time,
Aa tujhay main gungunana chahta hoon
I want to sing and hum your name all the time

Koi aansoo tery daaman par gira gar,

If ever any tear fell on your lap,

Boond ko moti banana chahta hoon
I want to transform every drop into a pearl

Thak gaya main kartay kartay yaad tujko,

I have literally gotten tired of remembering you,
Ab tujhay main yaad aana chahta hoon
Now I want you to remember me

Cha raha hai saari basti mein andhera,

It is getting dark all over the town
Roshni ko ghar jalana chahta hoon
I want to put my house on fire, just for lighting

Aakhri hichki teray zaano pay aayey,

I wish to leave this world whils't sleeping in your lap
Maut bhi main shayraana chahta hoon
I even want my death to be poetic

25) KIYA HAI PYAR JISE HUMNE ZINDAGI KI TARHA

Kiya hai pyar jise hamne zindagi ki tarah

Someone whom I loved very much, like my own life
Vo aashanaa bhii milaa hamase ajanabii kii tarah

That acquaintance too met me like a stranger

Baraa ke pyaas meri us ne haath chhor diya

As my thirst grew,  my hand was  abandoned
Vo kar raha tha muravat bhi dillagi ki tarah

That politeness gives the false notion of love

Kise khabar thi baregi kuchh aur tariki

He who knew the darkness will grow
Chhupega vo kisi badali mein chaandani ki tarah

He too will hide in a cloud like the moonlight

Kabhi na socha tha hamne "Qateel" us ke liye

Never did I  think to thank Qateel for him
Karega ham pe sitam vo bhi har kisi ki tarah

He too will torment me like everyone else

Sitam To Ye Hai Ke Vo Bhi Na Ban Saka Apana

It is a grief that he too could not be mine
Kubuul Hamne Liye Jis Ke Gam Khushi Ke Tarah

And I accepted that agony like pleasure

25) KIYA HAI PYAR JISE HUMNE ZINDAGI KI TARHA

This one, in as much that it is a wonderful poem, one would have thought that the translations would have been all over the internet....but alas no, seems as if

no one wants to meddle in the love life of Jagjit and Chitra Singh.

This effort may be the first time that translations is attempted for Kiya hai Pyar Jise, took me a long sleepless night, burning up the hindi/english dictionary but

eventually we do have something which I can vouch for as not the best but reasonable in the sense that it is the first time it is floating on the worldwide net.

POET: NIDA FAZLI

Biography of Nida Fazli

Nida Fazli poet

Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli popularly known as Nida Fazli (Urdu: Ω†Ψ―Ψ§ ΩΨ§ΨΆΩ„ΫŒ; Hindi: ΰ€¨ΰ€Ώΰ€¦ΰ€Ύ ΰ€«ΰ€Όΰ€Ύΰ€œΰ€Όΰ€²ΰ₯€) is an Indian Urdu poet.

Early Life

Nida Fazli was born on 12 October 1938, in Delhi, India into a Kashmiri family and attended school in Gwalior. His father was an Urdu poet. During the partition of India, his parents migrated to Pakistan, but Fazli decided to stay in India.

Career

While still young, Fazli was passing by a Hindu temple where a bhajan singer was singing a composition of Surdas about Radha sharing her sorrow with her maids at being separated from her beloved Krishna. The poetic beauty of the Pad, relating to the close rapport and bonding between human beings, inspired Nida to begin writing poems.

During that period, he felt that there were limitations in Urdu poetry. He absorbed the essence of Mir and Ghalib to express what he intended. He was fascinated by the lyrical mood of Meera and Kabir and widened his knowledge of poetry by studying T.S. Eliot, Gogol, Anton Chekhov and Takasaki.

Bollywood

He moved to Mumbai in search of a job in 1964. In the early days of his career, he wrote in Dharmayug and Blitz dialects. His poetic style attracted the notice of filmmakers and writers of Hindi and Urdu literature. He was often invited to Mushairas, the prestigious recitation sessions of one’s own poetry.

He became known among readers and ghazal singers for his elegant presentation and exclusive use of colloquial language for ghazals, dohaas and nazms, while avoiding ornate Persian imagery and compound words to simplify his poetry. He wrote the famous couplet: 'Duniya jise kehte hain jaadu kaa Khilona hai Mil jaaye to mitti hai kho jaaye to sona hai'. Some of his famous film songs include Aa bhi jaa (Sur), Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein (Aap To Aise Na The) and Hosh waalon ko khabar Kya (Sarfarosh).

Uneven Career

He wrote essays critical of contemporary poets of the sixties in his book Mulaqatein which outraged poets including Sahir Ludhianvi, Ali Sardar Jafri and Kaifi Azmi. As a result, he was boycotted in some poetic sessions.

His career improved when Kamal Amrohi, a filmmaker, approached him. The original songwriter Jan Nisar Akhtar working on the film Razia Sultan (1983) had died before completing the project. Nida wrote the final two songs and attracted other Hindi filmmaker.

His celebrated lyrics were also used in Aap to aise na the, Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996) and Gudiya.
He wrote the title song of TV serials like "Sailaab", "Neem Ka Ped", "Jaane Kya Baat Hui" and "Jyoti". The composition "Koi Akelaa Kahaan" is another popular composition sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy. His ghazals and other compositions are sung by notable artists of the day. He teamed up with Jagjit Singh in 1994 to bring an album named Insight, which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music.

He recently wrote columns for BBC Hindi website on various contemporary issues and literature.

Mirza Ghalib's works often get mentioned by him.

Style

"Hum laboN se keh naa paaye, unse haal-e-dil kabhi,
Aur wo samjhe nahiN, ye khamoshi kya cheez hai''

English Translation:

"My lips were never able to express the state of my heart,
And she failed to understand what my silence meant."

Nida Fazli is a poet of various moods and to him the creative sentiment and inner urge are the sources of poetry. He thinks that the feeling of a poet is similar to an artist: like a painter or a musician. In contrast he found lyric writing a mechanical job as he had to fulfil the demands of the script and the director. Later he accepted the practical necessity of money which comes from lyric writing and helps one to ponder on creative work.

He published his first collection of Urdu poetry in 1969. Childhood imagery persistently reflects in his poetry as elements of nostalgia. Primary themes which run through his poetry are contradictions in life, the search for purpose, nuances of human relationships, differences between practice and preaching, and the groping for that which is lost.

Contribution Towards Communal Harmony

Nida Fazli disagrees with the partition of India and has spoken out against the communal riots, politicians and fundamentalism. During the riots of December 1992 he had to take shelter in his friend’s house due to security concerns.

He has been honoured with the National Harmony Award for writing on communal harmony. He has 24 books to his credit in Urdu, Hindi and Gujaratiβ€” some of which are assigned as school textbooks in Maharashtra. He received the Mir Taqi Mir award for his autobiographical novel Deewaron Ke Bich from the Government of M.P. His best known works are: Mor Naach, Ham Qadam, and Safar Me Dhoop To Hogi.

26) HAR TARAF HAR JAGAH BESHUMAR AADMI

Har taraf har jagah beshumar aadmi
Phir bhi tanhaiyon ka shikaar aadmi
In every direction, every place, there are several people
Even then, man is a victim of loneliness

Subah se shaam tak bojh dhota hua
Apni hi laash ka khud mazaar aadmi
From morning to evening, he keeps bearing burden
A man is a grave for his own corpse

Har taraf bhaagte daudhte raaste
Har taraf aadmi ka shikaar aadmi
In every direction there are paths running
Everywhere, man is a victim (hunted by) of man]

Roz jeeta hua roz marta hua
Har naye din naya intezar aadmi
Everyday he lives and evryday he dies
Every new day is a new waiting for man

Zindagi ka mukkaddar safar dar safar
Aakhri saans tak bekaraar aadmi
The fate of life is journey after journey
Till the last breath, man is always without peace

27) GARAJ BARAS PYAASI DHARTI PAR

Garaj baras pyaasi dharthi par phir paani de maula
chidiyon ko daane, bacchon ko gud-dhaani de maula
Give water again to this thirsty earth, O God
Give seeds to birds and sweatmeat to children, O God

Do aur do ka jod hamesha chaar kahan hota hain
Soch samajh waalon ko thodi naadaani de maula
When has two and two added up to become four
Give innocence to people with intelligence, O God

Phir roshan kar zeher ka pyaala, chamka nayee saliben
Jhooton ki duniya mein sach ko taabaani de maula
Brighten the cup with poison, and polish the new crosses again
In a world of lies, give power/importance to truth, O God

Phir moorath se baher aakar chaaron aur bhikar ja
Phir mandir ko koi meera deewaani de maula

Come out of the idols once again, and spread yourself around
Give the temple some Meera once again, O God

Tere hote koi kissi ki jaan ka dushman kyon ho
Jeene waalon ko marne ki aasaani de maula
Inspite being there, why is everybody after somebody's life
Let the living people have an easy/peaceful death, O God

28) JAB KISI SAY KOI GILA RAKHNA

Jab kisi say koi gila rakhna,
Saamnay apnay aaiana rakhna
Whenever you are angry with someone,
Keep a mirror in front of you - try to have a look at yourself

Yunh ujalon say vaasta rakhna,
Shama kay paas hi hawa rakhna

You should keep such a relationship with Light,
That you can even keep the candle close to wind

Ghar ki taameer chahay jaisee ho,
Ismay ronay ki kuch jagah rakhna
Whatever may be the construction plan of your house,
You should keep a place in it, just for crying in solitude

Masjiday hain namazion kay liyey,
Apnay ghar mein kahin khuda rakhna

Temples, Mosques etc. are for priests,
Keep the God somewhere in your home

Milna julna jahan zaroori ho,
Milnay julnay ka hausla rakhna !

If meeting somebody is very important,
Have the courage to go for the meeting

Jab kisi say koi gila rakhna,
Saamnay apnay aaiana rakhna
Whenever you are angry with someone,
Keep a mirror in front of you - try to have a look at yourself

29) HOSHWAALON KO KHABAR KYA BEKHUDI KYA CHEEZ HAI

Hoshwaalon ko khabar kya bekhudii kya chiiz hai
People in their senses do not know what it is to lose theirs
Ishq kiiji'e phir samjhi'e zindagii kya chiiz hai
Once you love someone, then you will know what life is all about

Unse nazare kya mili roshan fizaa'en ho ga'iin
Eversince my eyes met hers, the vista has become more colorful
Aaj jaana pyaar kii jaaduugarii kya chiiz hai
Now I know the magic of love

Khultii zulfon ne sikhaa'ii mausamon ko shaayari

Looking at her hair undone, the unwordly people learned poetry

Jhuktii aankhon ne bataaya maikashii kya chiiz hai
The downcast eyes define the meaning of intoxication

Ham labon se kah na paa'e unse haal-e-dil kabhii
I was not able to bring to my lips the secrets of my heart
Aur voh samjhe nahiin yeh khaamoshii kya chiiz hai
And she never understood what my quietness was hiding

30) BAHUT KHUBSURAT HAI AAKHE TUMHARI

Bahut Khubsurat Hai, Aakhe Tumhari
Your eyes are so beautiful
Agar Ho Inayaat, Aye Jane Mohabaat,
If our love is blessed
Garadeji Yeh Dil Ko, Kismat Hamari,
Then fate will be kind to us

Jo Sabse Juda Hai, Who Andaaz Ho Tum,
You are the style that's very unique
Chupa Tha Jo Dilme, Wohi Raaz Ho Tum
You're the secret hidden in my heart
Tumhari Nazakat, Bani Jabse Chahat,
Ever since I fell for your elegance
Sukun Ban Gayi Hai, Har Ek Bekarari
Every restlessness has given me peace

Na The Jab Talak Tum, Hamari Najar Mein
When you weren't in my sight
Na Tha Chand Shab Mein, Na Suraj Saher Mein
There was no moonlight and no sunshine
Tumhari Ijazat, Tum Hari Hukumat
Your permission and your authority,
Yeh Sara Gagan Hai, Yeh Dharti Hai Sari
Is heaven and earth to me
