SAHIR LUDHIANVI

Sahir Ludhianvi: Born Abdul Hayee, in Ludhiana India, March 8th 1921 - Death October 25th Bombay, Maharashtra, India.

A colossus among film lyricists, Sahir Ludhianvi was slightly different from his contemporaries. A man unable to praise Khuda (God), Husn (beauty) and/or Jaam (wine), his pen was at its best pouring out bitter but sensitive lyrics over the declining values of society, the senselessness of war and politics, and the domination of materialism over love. Whenever he wrote any love songs, they were tinged with sorrow, due to the realization that there were other, starker concepts more important than love. He could be called the underdog's bard; close to his heart were the soldier gone to fight someone's war, the woman forced to sell her body, the family living on the street and other victims of society.

Born in March 8 1921 as Abdul Hayee, Sahir was the only son of a zamindar. The separation of his parents and the event of partition caused him to shuttle between India and Pakistan...and also brought him face to face with the struggles of life. He made a living as a journalist and editor in Pakistan, but an arrest warrant from the Pakistani government of the day after publishing some unflattering articles caused him to flee to Bombay in 1949, where he began to write film songs.

TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY

SAHIR LUDHIANVI:

Sahir made his debut in film lyrics with Naujawan (1951). His first major break came the same year when he wrote the lyrics for S.D. Burman's music in Baazi (1951). The movie, directed by Guru Dutt, and its music was a success and together S.D. Burman and Sahir went on to create some of their work in Jaal (1952), House Number 44 (1955), Munimji (1955) and the immortal classic Pyaasa (1957). And although they parted ways after Pyaasa (), Sahir was now a stalwart in Bollywood and during the 1960s and 1970s he wrote outstanding lyrics for films like Hum Dono (1961) and Taj Mahal (1963). However, he mostly composed lyrics for the Chopra brothers, before and after they separated, and some of his best work was in Kabhi Kabhie (1979), which went on to break all records.

He died in 1980 of a heart attack, in the midst of a card game. It was ironically appropriate; while the poet's heart bled for others, he never paid enough attention to his own life, and had a card-player nonchalance about life and death. He will be remembered along with Kaifi Azmi, as the poet who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures.

SAHIR LUDHIANVI:

Sahir was known to be very egotistic, perhaps as a result of his zamindar background; he fought for, and became the first lyricist, to get royalties from music companies. He also insisted to be paid a rupee more for each song than Lata Mangeshkar. However, in exchange for this, he was deeply involved in the setting of musical tunes as well as writing the lyrics to go with them - and so produced extra melodious tunes.

Although he remained a bachelor his whole life, Sahir had two affairs, one with writer Amrita Pritam and the other with singer Sudha Malhotra respectively. These relationships could not be cemented in marriage because the girls' fathers refused to let them marry someone they thought a Muslim.

His relationship with Amrita Pritam was so passionate, that at one time while attending a press conference Amrita wrote his name hundreds of time on a sheet of paper. The two of them would meet without saying a word; Sahir would puff away at cigarettes, and after he left Amrita would smoke the cigarette butts left by him. After his death, she said she hoped the smoke from her cigarettes would meet him in the other world.

Amrita Pritam wrote in her autobiography - Raseedi Ticket :-

"I recall - many years ago when Sahir had come to Delhi, he invited me and Imroz to the hotel where he was staying. We were there for a couple of hours. Sahir had placed an order for whisky and there were three glasses on the table. We returned deep into the night.And when it was almost midnight - Sahir called me up saying : " There are still three glasses lying on the table, and by turn I am sipping from each of them, and writing '' These Empty Goblets Are My Companions." Lady of modesty and grace, stop tormenting me you have to come

Main pal do pal ka shaayar huun 
I'm a poet only for a second or two;
Pal do pal merii kahaanii hai
My story will be over in a few seconds.
Pal do pal merii hanstii hai
My laughter is only for a moment or two;
Pal do pal merii jawaanii hai
My youth will be over in a few moments.
Main pal do pal ka shaayar huun 
I'm a poet only for a second or two.
 
Mujhse pahale kitne shaayar aaye aur aakar chale gaye
Many poets came before me, and after coming, departed;
Kuchh aahen bharkar laut gaye
Some went filled with sighs,
Kuchh nagme gaakar chale gaye
And some went singing songs.
Voh bhii ek pal ka qissa tha
They were only the story of a moment in time;
Main bhii ek pal ka qissa huun
I too am only the story of a moment.
Kal tumse judaa ho jaa'uunga
Tomorrow I will be separated from you,
Voh aaj tumhaara hissa huun
But for today, I'm a part of you.
 
Main pal do pal ka shaayar huun 
I'm a poet of a moment or two, no more.
 
Kal aur aa'enge nagmon kii
Tomorrow new songs will arrive,
Khiltii kaliyaan chunnevaale
Freshly bloomed blossoms to be plucked. 
Mujhse behatar kahanevaale
There will be better storytellers than me,
Tumse behatar sunnevaale

And better listeners than you. 
Kal koii mujhko yaad kare 
Tomorrow, someone might remember me;
Kyon koii mujhko yaad kare
But why should anyone remember me? 
Masaruuf zamaana mere li'e
For my sake, why should this busy world 
Kyon vaqt apna barbaad kare waste its time?

This heart cannot  concentrate without you, what shall I do
Tasawwoor mein koee bastaa nahee, hum kyaa kare
No one else settles in my imaginations, what shall I do

Tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-wafaa hum kyaa kare
You tell me now, my sweetheart, what shall I do

Loote dil mein diyaa jaltaa nahee, hum kyaa kare
In a stolen heart a lamp cannot be lit, what shall I do
Tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-adaa hum kyaa kare
You tell me now, my sweetheart, what shall I do

Ye dil tum bin kahee lagataa naheen, hum kyaa kare
This heart cannot  concentrate without you, what shall I do

Kise ke dil mein bas ke dil ko tadapana naheen achcha
Residing in someone's heart and irritating them is not desirable
Nigahon ko zalak de de kar chhop jana naheen achchhaa
Giving a glimpse of ones self and then hiding is not right
Ummeedon ke khile gulashan ko zulasaanaa naheen achchhaa
Its not right to let the flowers of expectations go waste
Humei tum bin koee jachantaa nahee, hum kyaa kare
I do not like any one other than you, what shall I do

Tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-wafaa hum kyaa kare

Sometimes the heart may also feel the pain no matter how small
Hazaaro gam hain is duniyaan mein apane bhee paraaye bhee
There are thousands of sorrows in this world, mine as well as others

Mohabat he kadam tanha nahin hum kya karen

I can love you but that love may not feel the same

Tum hee kah do ab aye jaana-ye-adaa hum kyaa kare
You tell me now, my sweetheart, what shall I do

Bujhaa do aag dil kee yaa ise khulkar hawaa de do
Not only is the sorrow of love the only one, what shall I do

Jo is kaa mol de paaye, use apanee wafaa de do
Take the flames that are burning in my heart or give it high hope

Tumhaare dil mein kyaa hain bas humei itanaa pataa de do
What is in your heart just let me be aware of that much
Ke abh tanahaa safar katataa nahee, hum kyaa kare
That now on my own the journey seems never ending, what shall I do
