His finger rings were missing, as well as pieces of his wife’s jewellery.
According to a police official, Reid’s wife left him home at around 9:00 hours and went to church.
She returned home to find her husband lying on the floor with blood pouring from a wound on the right side of his head.
An alarm was raised and the police were alerted.
There is suspicion that the perpetrator is a close relative.

Rose was hit from the back on the Washer Pond Road and dragged about 200 feet before the vehicle stopped and the driver removed the body, then drove away.
According to a taxi driver, Roydon Harris, aka β€˜Monkey Man’, he alerted the police to the accident. β€œI just do a drop off over de river and was going down de road when on de turn about 3:30 I see this dark thing on de road.
β€œSo I put on me bright lights and see de body lie down and all de blood so I go to de station and tell de police.”
According to Rose’s mother, Elaine Williams, a Special Constable attached to the Mackenzie Police Station, she was in her bed when a car pulled up and asked her if Nello lived there. She said that when she answered in the affirmative she was told that they found him dead on the Washer Pond Road.
She said that she was in shock and even accused them of killing her son.
Rose and his friend β€œBucky” were in the Inter Secondary School sports last Friday and were involved in an argument with another youth who brought two friends who allegedly live in Cayenne and they attacked them.
A wailing Williams said β€œJust last week dey stab meh son and I report it to de police and dem ent do nothing. Now dem kill me baby; dem murder he. Where he friends dem deh now fuh cry wid me?”
Rose left earlier on Friday to attend the Champion of Champion Sports meeting at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground. According to reports after the sports he was seen with friends in the L and L Social Club.
At the hospital, pandemonium broke out even as the hearse waited to transport the body to the morgue. Rose’s mother held his hand, wailing.
The grieving mother said that her younger daughter called him a few minutes to eleven Friday night and he told her that he was just around the corner and that he would be home soon. She noted that about one hour later she called him again and his phone rang out. She said she called again and the phone was turned off.
Rose’s older brother, Kevin, said that he is puzzled over the fact that his brother ended up on the Washer Pond Road because he doesn’t walk home. β€œMe brother doan walk home, he prefer to beg a drop before he walk.”
Rose turned seventeen on October 3, last. According to his mother he had just completed his CSEC in May/June last at Brickdam Secondary School and was successful in eight subjects. At the time of his death he was a sixth form student at the Mackenzie High School preparing for CAPE 2016.
A broken license plate was found on his body apparently belonging to the car that hit him. The license plate bearing the number PRR 6503 was traced to Marlon β€œBrando” Washington.
Washington, a Special Constable in Georgetown, told investigating ranks that when he hit Rose he was already dead.
Rose’s bag and cellular phone cannot be found. An autopsy will be done on the body on Monday. (Jacquey Bourne)

Man released from Suriname prison, prime suspect in father’s murder

OCTOBER 26, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Released after a nine-year stretch in a Surname jail, a Linden ex-convict is now the prime suspect in the murder of his 82-year-old father, Andrew Reid, who was battered to death in his Canvas City home on Saturday.
Detectives are trying to locate Mark Reid, who they believe can provide them with details of his father’s death. Police said that Reid, who lives at Amelia’s Ward, has not been seen since his dad was slain.
But Kaieteur News understands that he turned up briefly yesterday afternoon at a Potaro Road, Mackenzie house at which a relative of the murdered man has been staying.
According to a source, the man enquired whether it was true that his father was dead.
β€œHe said β€˜Is wha ah hearing, is wha going on?’ We were afraid because you could see the anger on his face,” a source said.
β€œWe said yes (his father is dead) and he say he has to fly out the country.” The suspect then left, the source said.
Mark Reid was reportedly released less than a year ago from a Suriname prison.
The body of his father, Andrew Reid, of Lot 543 Canvas City, Linden, was found on the floor of his bedroom with a gaping head wound at around noon on Saturday.

His wedding ring was missing, as well as gold chains and two rings belonging to his wife.
While the bedroom was ransacked, there was no sign of forced entry. Indications are that the pensioner could have done little to defend himself, since he was infirm and his legs were badly swollen.
Esther Reid, the murdered man’s reputed wife, told Kaieteur News that she last saw him alive at around 09.00 hrs, when she left for Church. She returned at around 12.45 hrs, and immediately sensed that something was amiss, since someone had loosened all the window blinds.
β€œI would tie the curtains so that fresh air would come in, (but) all the curtains were down and the windows were closed.
She then entered the bedroom and found her husband’s battered body. She recalled that his upper body was on the floor while his feet were on a bench.
Mrs. Reid said that she last saw the prime suspect, who is her stepson, last Thursday. She alleged that on Saturday, the son had contacted Mr. Reid who was a Seventh Day Adventist, and enquired if he was going to church that day. Mr. Reid reportedly told his son that he would be at home, while his wife would be at church
Mrs. Reid said that the suspect had also visited his father on Friday when she was out. Some relatives alleged that the suspect was in the habit of visiting his father and demanding money.
While many canvas City residents were tight lipped when questioned about the murder, several others described it as shocking, especially as the victim could not even defend himself.

β€œThis thing is so shocking right now I can’t even ketch meself,” one woman said.
β€œYesterday (Saturday) I see Miss Esther going out to church early, then a little later I see she passing back down the street crying. So I asked why she was crying and she said she husband dead but I thought he die from natural causes, so you could imaging the shock when I go to the house and see he lying in a pool of blood.
β€œHe face de cover though, but I didnt bother to check to see it because I didn’t want to remember him like that, because he was such a nice person.”
Many others described the victim as a very pleasant person, and said that he seldom moved around as he had to use a walker.

Seven ex-Govt. officials got lion’s share of $144M medical aid package

October 26, 2015 | By | Filed Under News

Seven former government officials received the lion’s share of government’s medical assistance last year, utilizing more than a third of the total allocation. Government last year expended $144M in medical aid to 505 persons, with seven government officials receiving over $45M. The remaining amount was used to assist over 495 persons. It works out to an average of $198,000 being spent on each of the 498 private individuals assisted by Government last year, while seven of its officials utilized an average of $6.4M each. This information was made public on Thursday last, when the Auditor General’s report on national expenditure was made public. Despite the glaring disparity between the levels of assistance provided to private individuals as against government officials, the Auditor General reported that relevant approvals for expenditure were presented for audit examination. The Audit Office has since recommended that the Ministry formulate a policy with respect to the amount of medical help that should be granted to individual patients.

Former Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai

Former Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai

Among those ex-government officials who benefitted from government’s medical assistance set aside for the poor and vulnerable was former Amerindian Affairs Minister, Pauline Sukhai. Shortly before the May 11 General and Regional Elections, it was disclosed that Sukhai had several million dollars worth of work done to her teeth, an expense which was funded by the state using tax payers’ dollars. She had defended the expenditure as an entitlement, a statement that led to much public outrage. The former Minister had also said that the information was confidential. The report for the activities between 2012 and 2013 lists 942 persons from Regions 1 to 10 who received subsidized and full financial assistance for medical treatment. Those persons received some $361.4M in assistance. Again, government officials received the lion’s share of the medical assistance programme. It was also disclosed that ten cheques had been issued for some $4.2 in dental work. Nine of those were for the former Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sukhai who utilized some $2.1M, the then Minister of Human Services Jennifer Webster used up $1.3M while the then Prime Minister Sam Hinds benefited from $28,240 and his wife Yvonne $788,880. A total of $25,160 was paid for the other person who benefitted from dental assistance. It was found too that the former Attorney General Anil Nandlall was also a beneficiary of the Government’s medical assistance scheme and it was reported that he racked up some $4.9M in medical expenses in September, 2012 in the United States. Nandlall lists β€œmedical support” as the diagnosis. He did claim to have repaid the money he received. The former Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture Ali Baksh also received medical assistance for a coronary artery bypass at a cost of $12.2M. This is in addition to $249,600 for his airfare. Former President Donald Ramotar had promised a review of the medical assistance policy. There is however no evidence that this policy review was ever implemented.

Gang of five beat, rob Corentyne couple

A GANG of five bandits on Sunday night invaded the home of an East Berbice couple, beating and robbing them of them of an undisclosed sum of money and other effects. The robbery reportedly occurred around 22:00 hrs at the couple’s Lot 257 Number Two Village, East Coast Berbice home.
Sixty-two-year-old Patrick Mangra told reporters that he and his wife had just returned home from a Chinese restaurant when they were attacked.
β€œWe went in and sit down under the house, not ready to go upstairs as yet, and I see three men running coming from the back with their face tied up,” Mangra said.
As they held on to him, Mangra said, he tried to fight them off, but was unsuccessful.
β€œThey tear off the vest I was wearing, and tied my hands, he said. β€œI fight with them. Then one of them say, β€˜Hit him!’ β€œAfter two hours, I wake up and I see my foot tie, and everything in the house gone.”
He’s not sure whether any of the men had a firearm, as he did not see them with one; so he could not say what they used to hit him with.
His wife, Revina Seeberchan, meanwhile, was accosted by two other masked men who’d entered the yard, and taken into the house where she was told no harm would come to her if she cooperated.
Having gotten her assurance, they proceeded to help themselves to whatever money, local or foreign, they could find; they, however, reneged on their promise not to hurt her, they beat and trussed her up when she was not forthcoming enough about where the jewellery and money were.
Among items the intruders took away were the couple’s passports, three cellular phones, three gold chains and a bracelet, and an 82-inch television set.
According to the couple, the ordeal lasted close to two hours, and that it was the first time they were robbed since returning home for good from neighbouring Suriname back in May.
Following the incident, Mangra was admitted as a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, while Seeberchan was treated at the same institution and sent away. Up to press time, the couple was still trying to ascertain what items were taken away. Police are investigating. No arrests have been made as yet.

BICYCLE BANDITS
Meanwhile, in another incident, a cane harvester was severely beaten by bandits during an attack at Rose Hall on Saturday, police have confirmed.
Seenarine Kalimuldon is now a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, nursing fractures to both of his arms. Kalimuldon told this newspaper that he was in New Amsterdam to do shopping with his family when the bandits pounced on him around 18:45 hrs.
β€œWe went together, and then I stop to buy credit,” the 53-year-old of Chesney, Corentyne related. According to him, as soon as he left the shop, the two men who were following him on bicycles began closing in on him.
β€œI start to ride fast, but they catching me up, so I decide to turn through one of them fine street to meet up with meh children faster, but they ride straight behind me.
β€œI don’t know where they get a piece ah wood so fast, and clap one lash pon me and break mi hand two places.”
The man said he collapsed, and one of the bandits ran through his pocket and took away $20,000 along with a cellular phone and his bicycle. He said by the time he got up, the bandits had already escaped.
He said he tried chasing behind them, but to no avail. The matter has since been reported to the police.

Earlier a man with whom Ally had a long-standing dispute reported to Police that Ally had gone to his home at Lot 15, Grant 1805 and damaged several windows.

As Police continue to investigate the murder, two men were taken into custody and are assisting with investigation. Police have not released the identity of those in custody but have stated that they are searching for three other persons in relation to the murder.

He said he subsequently reported the incident to the Rose Hall Police Outpost.

β€œThey told me that they will make contact with me. I am surprised that up to now [Monday midday] the Police have not come back to take a statement from me. I told them that I could identify the two boys,” the injured man related from his hospital bed.

Meanwhile, a source at the Rose Hall Police Outpost confirmed that the incident was reported, but said it was expected that officers from Central Police Station in New Amsterdam were going to follow up by taking statements. The source noted that no one has been arrested in relation to the matter. However, the incident is being investigated.

Bharrat Jagdeo criminal charge fixed for High Court ruling on November 6

OCTOBER 27, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

The high court decision in the criminal charge against former President Bharrat Jagdeo on whether Magistrate Charlene Artiga has the jurisdiction to hear the matter has been fixed for decision on November 6. Justice Navindra Singh is hearing the matter in the Georgetown High Court.
The original matter was set to continue yesterday in the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Artiga.  However due to the challenge in the High Court the matter was further put down for report.
When the matter was called, Jagdeo’s lawyers Mursalene Bacchus and Adrian Anamayah had asked for another date for the report since the matter in the High Court has been stalled due to the fact that Justice William Ramlal who was assigned to hear the case is ill. The matter was subsequently assigned to Justice Singh.
Magistrate Artiga had put the matter down for report on Monday. However when the matter was called, the court heard that no decision was made since the Judge was still ill and that the matter was reassigned to Justice Singh.
Magistrate Artiga has since set November 30, for report at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
The Magistrate had already started hearing the private criminal charge against former President Bharrat Jagdeo when the High Court order came down from Justice William Ramlal. The case had been called three times before it was stopped.
Legal minds are now saying that the precedent set by this case is likely to spark other High Court actions that can see cases before Magistrates being halted.
The Order/Rule Nisi of Certiorari is directing Magistrate Artiga to show cause why a Writ/Order of Certiorari should not be issued against her, and to quash her decision or ruling in the private criminal proceedings.
Attorney-at-Law Christopher Ram had filed the charge against Jagdeo at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, Corentyne, Berbice. The charge is that Jagdeo uttered words causing racial or ethnic hatred, contrary to Section 139 D (1) (a) of the Representation of the People’s Act, Chapter 1:03.
Jagdeo’s lawyers applied to the Berbice High Court for the writs and order, contending that the Magistrate’s orders in the case are β€œirrational, unreasonable, erroneous, in law and is null, void and of no legal effect”.
Magistrate Artiga, on May 25, had already started the case, warning that if Jagdeo did not turn up, she would be issuing an arrest warrant. He later showed up at that Berbice court, rushing from his Pradoville Two home, East Coast Demerara. Standing in the dock, he was placed on self-bail after the charge was read to him. He was also restricted from travelling unless he sought the court’s permission.
Jagdeo’s lawyers in late May successfully approached the High Court asking that the travel restriction be overturned.
On Monday, it was announced by Magistrate Artiga that she could not proceed because of the High Court order. She set the matter down for a report yesterday.
The lawyers are arguing also that the charge is fundamentally defective and legally invalid and that the continuation of the criminal proceedings is an abuse of the processes of the court.
The Magistrate now has to show good and sufficient cause why the order of prohibition should not be made absolute.
Jagdeo’s case is closely watched as it would be one of a first against a former leader of the country.
Ram, in addition to being a lawyer, is an auditor and critic of the previous PPP Government. He is accusing Jagdeo of breaking the laws when he uttered statements on Sunday March 8, at Babu Jaan.
Ram charged that the statements β€œcan result in racial or ethnic violence or hatred among the people”.
At the first hearing, Jagdeo’s lawyers had argued that the charge was frivolous, vexatious and without any basis in law. They requested that it be dismissed.

LaPenitence men remanded for robbery at A. N. Electronics

OCTOBER 28, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER COURT STORIESFEATURES / COLUMNISTSNEWS

Two La Penitence men were yesterday remanded to prison after denying four counts of armed robbery when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Alfred Hescott, 17, of 155 Middle Road La Penitence and Kenton Vallet, 20, of Lot 47 Middle Road La Penitence, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty the charges.
The charges against the men stemmed from the October 23 robbery committed on A.N Electronic Store located on Croal Street, Georgetown.
The court heard that Hescott and Vallet robbed Kapil Hariprashad of 34 cell phones valued $1.5M-property of Neshal Ramnarine. The defendants also robbed Kevin Moonsammy of one cellular phone and $20,000 cash -total value of $65,000.
Further, the  defendants were accused of robbing Lawrence Figueira of a laptop computer valued $85,000, a mobile phone worth $80,000, a finger ring and $160,000 cash- all totaling $345,000.
And finally, it was alleged that they robbed Hariprashad of $250,000 cash and US$400.
The charges come three days after the police swooped down on a house at Middle Road, La Penitence and arrested six men in connection with the robbery. During a search conducted on the premises, the police found several cellular phones and an unlicensed .32 revolver along with ammunition.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that although some of the phones were recovered, the police file is incomplete. However, Jones did not disclose any information on what transpired that day.
According to reports, gunmen stormed the Electronic Store around 15:30 hrs on the day in question.
It was reported that one of them approached a staffer, whom he claimed had recently sold him a cell phone.
Because the store had not sold that brand recently, that staff became suspicious. However, before an alarm could have been raised, two other men joined their accomplice and ordered the employees to lie on the ground.
The men, two of whom are believed to be Hescott and Vallet, held up the employees and escaped with computers and other items in a silver-grey Toyota Runx.
The unrepresented Hescott and Vallet will return to court on November 19, for statements.

Police Constable charged for prisoner’s escape

A Police Constable was on Tuesday placed on $40,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged for allowing a prisoner to escape from lawful custody.
Noel Trotman of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It is alleged that on September 17, 2015, the 54-year-old Constable who was stationed at Mahdia Police Station, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), through his negligence allowed prisoner David Peter to escape from custody.
According to the Prosecution’s case, Peter was charged with trafficking narcotics and was being held at the Mahdia Police Station when he escaped.
Trotman was represented by Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson. In a bail application, Thompson told the court that his client was married with five children and has been a serving member of the Guyana Police Force for over 36 years.
The lawyer stated that it was unfortunate that his client was being charged for the offence since he was nearing retirement.
Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones did not object to bail but requested that it be substantial.
The case will continue at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court on January 19, 2016.

So I say, carry on with these articles showing the police finally doing their work without hindrance.

Good ting PPP lost.

Linden shopkeeper shoots at woman

OCTOBER 30, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

– court hears

Attorney-at-law Peter Hugh secured bail in the sum of $230,000 for his client, Randolph Williams, who denied firing a gun at a woman, when he made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
Williams, 26, of 214 Half Mile Linden, is accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Natasha Watson, with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause her grievous bodily harm.
It was also alleged that the father of two unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Diana Edwards, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Both of the incidents allegedly occurred on October 25, at Omai Backdam, Essequibo River.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan and was ordered to return to court on January 19, 2016, at the Mahdia Magistrates Court.
He was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 for discharging the loaded firearm with intent and $30,000 on the assault charge.
Attorney Hugh, during his bail application, asked for his client to be granted bail in a reasonable sum, because he has no pending or previous matters. The lawyer told the court that his client operates a shop in the interior. He pointed out that one of the complainants in the matter owes his client money and has refused to pay him.
Hugh said that on the day in question, Willams had a confrontation with the woman, during which an argument ensued. He added that the woman left and returned with a group of people and another confrontation ensued.
The lawyer claimed that his client was shot to the left leg during the altercation.
Further, Hugh pleaded with the Magistrate to release his client on bail due to the fact that there are no facilities in the Camp Street prison to accommodate him. In explaining this, the attorney told the court that Williams was recently discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after receiving treatment for the gunshot wound.
He also urged the court to consider bail for the defendant after noting that his client would not be given a trial within a reasonable time.
In this regard, Hugh argued that the matter will have to be transferred to the Mahdia Magistrates Court which will have its next sitting in January 2016.
But Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones strongly objected to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty citing the gravity of the charge.
Jones argued that the victim’s safety would be jeopardized should the defendant be granted bail. He also disclosed that several spent shells were recovered from the crime scene.
Additionally, Jones stated that Williams assaulted Diane Edwards which resulted in her sustaining injuries.
Jones said that public spirited persons in the area saw the defendant β€œbeating” the woman and intervened. In response, the prosecutor   added that the defendant fired several shots, hitting Watson.
According to the prosecutor, Williams is alleging that he was shot by a man called β€œGaza”. The court heard that β€œGaza” pursued Williams after he had shot the woman.

Human skull, bones found in canefield at Better Hope

OCTOBER 30, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Guyana’s DNA shortcomings will certainly be amplified with the discovery of yet another human skeleton, this time at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.
The remains, believed to be that of a male, were found in an unused plot of land near a canefield at Better Hope at around 06.30 hrs yesterday.
The area is close to Plaisance Squatting Area.
From all appearances, the remains were at the spot for sometime but were left undetected because no one had used that area.
However, it was yesterday while cane cutters were preparing to work in the area for the first time that they noticed the skull. They then found human bones nearby.
A green hat, a pair of black pants with red stripes and a shirt was discovered nearby. Judging from the clothes, one cane cutter suggested that the victim was a young person.
One of the workers, who saw the remains said that it was two cane cutters who first saw the skull.
β€œThey noticed it and raised an alarm and other workers went. We saw the human skull and around the area, there were bones.”
He added that the police were summoned and they took away the remains.
According to the worker, a few years ago, workers came across a decomposed body at a canefield in Ogle.
β€œPeople would usually dump bodies in these areas because it’s not populated,” the worker opined.

Minibus conductor acquitted of Drug Store owner’s murder

OCTOBER 30, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Minibus conductor Orvin Roberts  was yesterday acquitted of the murder of drug store proprietor Harold Rachpaul, after a mixed jury returned a not guilty verdict in relation to the offence.
Roberts, of β€˜C’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, had faced a trial before Justice Navindra Singh and mixed jury at the Georgetown High Court.
Rachpaul, 84, was found gagged, strangled and bound with an electrical cord in his apartment located behind his business, Rachpaul’s Drug Store, on Robb Street, Georgetown. The incident occurred sometime between August 18 and August 19, 2011, during the course of a burglary.
A post mortem report, presented in court stated that the elderly businessman died as a result of asphyxiation due to compression to the neck, compounded by blunt trauma.
Following the summing up of evidence presented in the trial by Justice Singh yesterday, the case was handed over to the jury for deliberations.   A few hours later, the panel returned to the courtroom, with a unanimous verdict of not guilty.
Roberts immediately thanked the judge and jurors, and also expressed his gratitude to his attorney, Nigel Hughes. Hughes represented Roberts in association with Attorneys-at- law, Savannah Barnwell and Kezia Williams.
β€œMr. Roberts you are free to go… Good luck,” said Justice Singh to the former accused, who blissfully walked out of the courtroom.   Outside the courtroom, Roberts wrapped his armed around his relatives.
Roberts was the sole person accused of killing the prominent Robb Street businessman.   According to reports Rachpaul’s killer had apparently forced him to open a vault which contained a large sum of cash, phone cards and other documents before murdering him.   Police witnesses testifying in the trial had claimed that fingerprints found inside a safe at the scene of the murder tied Roberts to the crime.
On Wednesday Assistant Superintendent of Police, Raffeik Ali, told the court that based on the analysis he conducted, the fingerprint impressions taken at the crime scene matched the prints police obtained from Roberts.
But Ali was faced with a series of questions by Defence Counsel, Nigel Hughes, regarding the precision and accuracy of his analysis. The policeman insisted that the prints belonged to Roberts. He said that the prints had undergone computer analysis as well as manual examination.
He held that the computer identifies possibilities of a fingerprint match but the manual examination, can confirm it.  In his closing address, Hughes pointed to the fact that there were no signs of forced entry to the building in which the elderly businessman was murdered.  The attorney noted too, that the only persons with access to the premises were the elderly man, his son and grandson – the latter two were never considered suspects to the crime nor were they questioned by the police regarding their whereabouts on the night of the murder.
He underlined too that both the victim’s son, Leonard Rachpaul and grandson Vincent had testified that a Transport (Deed of Title) was among the items stolen from the Robb Street premises.
But in her arguments, State Prosecutor Narissa Leander said that the fingerprints found at the scene could not have belonged to anyone  other than the accused.   She said that the fact that Robert’s fingerprints matched the ones found on the inside of a safe at the crime scene, indisputably linked him to the murder. She had urged the jury to use their commonsense and good judgment, when reviewing evidence of the case.

16-year-old boy allegedly sexually assaulted at Parika Police Station

– Constable under close arrest

A 16-year-old boy is accusing a Police Constable of sexually assaulting him while he was being processed for an offence of assault at the Parika Police Station on Tuesday morning.

The teenager was reportedly arrested and placed to sit on a bench in the station since he was not allowed to stay in the cell with two adults. The teenager accused the Police Officer of fondling him among other things.

When contacted D Division (West Demerara-East Bank Essequibo) Commander Stephen Mansell told Guyana Times that a team comprising officials from the Office of Professional Responsibility was presently probing the allegation and the Constable was under close arrest. Commander Mansell added that the Constable was transferred from the Parika Police Station.

β€œHe was under close arrest but he was transferred to another location pending the outcome of the investigations”, the commander stated. He pointed out that once the investigations are being completed, the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who will determine if charges will be instructed against the constable.

As of now, he stated that the teen’s statement was the only evidence implicating the Police rank since there were no eyewitnesses. It is not clear if the teenager confided in anyone with respect to the matter. However, the young man is alleging that he is being victimised by the Commander.

β€œSet-up”

In an invited comment, the accused Constable denied the allegation, claiming that it was a set-up. He explained that on Monday evening, Police ranks arrested a teenager in connection with assault and he immediately contacted his superior who advised him not to put the teen in the same cell with the adult prisoners but rather to handcuff him and let him stay on the bench.

He stated that the bench was within the view of the prisoners in the cell. During the night, the Constable advised the teenager to contact his family, but he claimed that they did not have a landline number and provided a mobile number.

β€œI didn’t have credit in my phone so I told him that… and he say it was cool.” The Constable stated that about 03:00h, one of his superiors called to enquire β€œhow things was going” and at the same time asked about the number of prisoners for court.

He stated that after providing the information to the senior Police rank, he went about his normal routine. A short while after, the prisoners got ready to be picked up for court at Leonora. The vehicle came after some time and the men were loaded into the van which left.

The Constable further stated that soon after the Corporal in charge of the station came and the young man started to behave in a disorderly manner towards her and he had reason to discipline him. At no point in time, he added, the Corporal intervened but allowed the young man to continue with the disorderly behaviour.

It was at this time he made the disclosure that he was allegedly fondled by the Police rank. Out of anger of being wrongfully accused, the rank reportedly used explicit language in the station. The shift changed and the Constable left. Later in the day, he was summoned to the D Division Commander’s office where he was reportedly treated with disrespect.

He left without providing a statement and has not reported for work since Wednesday morning, but he planned on clearing his name by contracting a lawyer to defend him and declared his innocence. Meanwhile, the constable stated that on the night the teenager was brought into the station, he claimed he was 13, but during investigations, it was revealed that he was 16.

The Police are continuing their investigations.

Elisabeth Harper’s daughter beaten, robbed

As crime spirals out of control, the daughter of former People’s Progressive Party/Civic Prime Ministerial Candidate Elisabeth Harper in the 2015 elections was on Wednesday beaten and robbed by two armed men who invaded her Farm, East Bank Demerara home.
This newspaper was told Melissa Pollard, daughter of Elisabeth Harper, was at home when two armed men kicked opened a grille door, gaining entry to the house.
Reports are that about 10:00h, Pollard was at home when she heard a crashing sound followed by two men entering her house. She reportedly attempted to run but was cornered by the men who were unmasked. As they accosted her, they demanded that she hand over cash and jewellery but she claimed she did not have any money at home. The two dealt the woman several blows about her body.
Guyana Times understands the woman sustained lacerations to the head, face, back and other parts of her body. The men tied up Pollard and ransacked the home as she looked on helplessly. They reportedly carted off a quantity of jewellery, mobile phone and iPad, among other items.
After the men left, Pollard managed to free herself and raised an alarm. At the time of the robbery, the woman’s daughter had already left for school.
Harper, mother of the traumatised woman, expressed thanks to the Almighty for saving her daughter’s life.
She said the scenario could have been worse and for that she is extremely thankful.
Harper noted that her daughter was too distraught to speak with the media and was enduring a lot of pain.
The former PM candidate told Guyana Times her daughter and granddaughter live alone and on the day of the incident, the bandits apparently thought that no one was at home.
However, she noted that Police responded promptly and has launched an investigation. She also noted that her daughter was taken to hospital where she was treated and sent away.

Pradoville 2 scandal… DPP clears way for probe into criminal aspect

OCTOBER 30, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS
Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack

Director of Public
Prosecutions,
Shalimar Ali-Hack

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack has given the green light for a full blown investigation into the criminal aspect of the contentious Pradoville Two deal.

This is according to Head of the State Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), Dr. Clive Thomas.

Kaieteur News understands that SARU recently wrote the DPP requesting that the matter be investigated and she has since handed over the case to the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud for further investigations to begin.

Dr. Thomas said that he is pleased with the fact that the DPP’s office has acknowledged SARU’s request and has since acted expeditiously in that regard.

β€œAfter our request, the DPP wrote back to me saying that her office is constitutionally mandated to look into the criminal aspect of this case and said that with my permission she would forward it to the Commissioner of Police. I wrote her back saying that we have no objection and this was done,” Dr. Thomas.

In addition to calling on the DPP to investigate the matter, SARU had also put in a formal request at the Ministry of Public Security to probe the criminal aspect of the Pradoville Two deal.

In early October, SARU completed a report which stated that in 2010, the Bharrat Jagdeo Cabinet made a decision authorizing the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) to privatize State lands. NICIL is the body tasked with overseeing the privatization of State assets.

It reportedly spent more than $200M to develop the sea front community without the knowledge and blessings of the National Assembly and other relevant bodies.

The said lands were then secretly sold to the former Ministers and known friends and associates of the previous regime. At the time of the sale, the report said, the lands were grossly undervalued and sold at a price substantially below the market value, thereby depriving the state of its full benefits.

SARU said, β€œThere is a direct link between the misconduct and the abuse of powers and duties of their position. The former Cabinet members knew they were doing a wrong in transferring State lands into their names and that of their acquaintances for undervalued market prices for the land. The lands were sold for $114 per square foot at the time.”

β€œPublic officers ought to carry out their duties, not for the benefit of themselves, but for the benefit of the public as a whole. If they neglect or misconduct themselves by their actions in the course of their duties, this may lead to a breach or abuse of the public’s trust. The act of the Cabinet members for their benefit is serious enough to amount to an abuse of the public’s trust.”

In a letter addressed to Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan, SARU had said that based on its findings, it is requesting that Ramjattan’s Office proceed to further investigate unlawful aspects of this matter, with the aim of establishing whether criminal action should be instituted.

β€œIt is the duty of this Unit in the Ministry of the Presidency to ensure that no Minister of Government in Guyana would be the beneficiary from any acts of misconduct or unlawful conduct while being holders of Public Office.”

SARU had also informed the Public Security Minister that it has also forwarded its report to the Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, along with a copy of a Legal Opinion on the potential misconduct in Public Office by the former Ministers.

The document on the Legal Opinion says that there is legal scope for the argument of willful neglect by the former ministers in performing their duties without reasonable excuse or facilitation to an extent amounting to an abuse of the public trust.

Further, based on the cases cited, the document outlines that the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, has Legal Standing on this matter.

Once sufficient evidence is gathered by his Chambers, Williams had said that a civil action against the former Cabinet Ministers will be instituted. He had explained to the media that former President Bharrat Jagdeo could face prosecution.

The AG had argued that Jagdeo may be immune from prosecution for certain decisions he may have taken as President, provided these were legal actions. Misappropriating State lands may not be within his purview, Williams said.

The AG also made it clear that he cannot institute charges in this case; the person constitutionally empowered to do so is the DPP. He noted that while the Guyana Police Force can also institute such charges, should it act without the advice of the DPP, then she also has the power to intervene and take over the prosecutions started by the police.

The SARU report however lists the DPP, Miss Shalimar Ali-Hack as a beneficiary of the controversial Pradoville Two deal. The report said that on September 7, 2011, the DPP bought Lot 184 Sparendaam, ECD, Block IV, which is 0.2767 acres of land.

Asked how this looming situation of conflict of interest would be dealt with, Williams had said, β€œShe would have to recuse herself in the determination of the matter.”

Described by police as one of their most elusive suspects, the suspected gunman, who is from Charlestown, was captured in Georgetown yesterday during a joint police operation.
Police said that the suspect, who was reportedly released from prison this year on arms and ammunition charges, was also wanted in connection with β€œa series of armed robberies and violent crimes.”
Police sources said that the suspect is also a member of the gang that is involved in a bloody feud with individuals from East Ruimveldt.
Lewis, of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, was shot at least nine times on September 4, last, outside of the Ghetto Flex night spot at the corner of Albouys and James Streets, Albouystown, execution style. Three others were shot up in what appeared to be a hit carried out by two gunmen
Two gunmen had approached on foot and escaped immediately after the execution in a waiting car that was parked on Sussex Street.
When Lewis fell to the ground and raised his head as he gasped for air, one of his gunmen reportedly walked up to him and shot him repeatedly to ensure that he was dead.
The killer was heard declaring, β€œHe disrespectful.”
Relatives and friends did not hesitate to describe Lewis as a β€œBad Man”.
One relative reported that Lewis had a lot of enemies. He would rob anyone, even his family. Others who knew of him said, β€œHe does go to Cayenne and he does rob even thief men like heself.”
Some reports indicated that the killing was linked to a robbery that took place in Adelaide and Howes Street, Charlestown a few months ago during a domino tournament.
One man called β€œFat Man” was robbed and shot in the leg on that occasion.

Attack on Mahaica family…Cops capture remaining gang members, recover loot, car

OCTOBER 31, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Police have captured the rest of the gang that escaped on Thursday with a Toyota Spacio and other valuables after terrorizing Mahaica rice farmer, Gansham Jorie, and his family.
Police said, yesterday, that two suspects, who were part of a three-man gang that robbed the family of a car, cash and jewllery at their Prospect, Mahaica, home, were positively identified.
β€œThe vehicle along with part of the booty was recovered during police investigations and charges are to be instituted shortly,” police said.
Around 15:00 hours on Thursday, three armed bandits stormed the home of rice farmer Gansham Jorie at Prospect, Mahaica, and held the farmer, his wife and daughter at gunpoint.
The men threatened to kill their victims, while demanding cash, jewellery and other valuables.
This newspaper was told that the men ransacked Jorie’s house and carted off an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery.
They then took the keys for his blue Spacio PPP 1050 and escaped.
Almost immediately after the bandits left, the police at the Mahaica Police Station were contacted.
In the absence of a Force vehicle, the detective on duty had no other alternative but to use his personal vehicle to respond.
He spotted the bandits somewhere in Mahaica and trailed them all the way to Ann’s Grove, a few miles away.
Bravely, he challenged the escaping bandits, forcing three of them to flee from the car in a bid to getaway.
The driver of the car sped away.
The detective who was accompanied by another general duty constable, managed to apprehend two of the fleeing bandits, while another one, taking advantage of the extra number, made good his escape.
A search of the captured bandits unearthed some of the stolen jewellery which was positively identified by the victims at the Mahaica Police Station.

Gunmen hit Goed Fortuin shop

The surveillance footage showing the armed men in the shop

Police in D Division (West Demerara) are hunting a three-man gang that attacked and robbed a shop in Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred around 19:10h during which the armed men robbed and injured two West Bank Demerara residents. According to the police, the men entered the grocery shop of Mohabir Singh, 24, located at 406 First Street, Goed Fortuin, gun-butted his head and escaped with over $900,000 cash.

Sherwin Mayers, 37, a customer who was in the shop at the time, was also relieved of his cellular phone and $20,000 cash. When Guyana Times visited the shop on Friday, Mayers related what transpired.

He said at the time he was sitting just outside the shop while Singh and his father-in-law were at the gate standing when a car pulled up and three men, all armed, rushed out and help them at gunpoint.

”When they come in, one of them lash me in my head and took away my phone. They then forced us inside the shop and put us to lie on the ground face down,” he recalled. Mayers noted that he can’t really say what transpired afterwards since he was face down.

This newspaper was told that Singh and his wife Liloutie, 23, along with their two infant children recently moved into the house and have been running the stop for about four months. This is the first time they have been robbed.

At the time of the robbery, Singh’s wife, his children and two other young female relatives were in the shop. After seeing the gunmen, the females rushed upstairs to safety and locked the door but were forced to let the men in.

Singh’s father-in-law Khemraj Persaud explained that after the gunmen put them to lie in the shop, two of them jumped over the counter and went upstairs after his daughter while the other remained to watch over them. He added that the door upstairs was close so the other two returned downstairs and took Singh to get his wife to open the door, which she did.

When this publication visited the house, Singh was not at home but his wife related that while upstairs, the gunmen demanded that her husband hand over all the cash and jewellery. β€œWhen we give them the cash, they ask for all the jewellery but we tell them we ain’t got no jewellery. One of them then take his gun and hit my husband in his head,” she recalled.

Guyana Times was told the men were masked, however, surveillance camera in the shop caught the bandits entering and forcing the three men to lie on the floor while they emptied the cash register. They were also seen rushing out the shop.

Neighbours who saw when the men entered the shop related that they called 911 emergency line but there was no answer as was the case when they contacted the La Grange Police Station.

Meanwhile, in a release the police said the village has an active and vibrant Community Policing Group however the group was not out on patrol during the robbery. Nevertheless, crime sleuths in the Division believe this gang will be apprehended soon since they are narrowing in on their investigations.

Ranks in this Division said they recently dismantled a criminal networking gang.

Construction worker charged with chopping and stabbing wife

A construction worker was on Friday brought before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in Court Five of the Georgetown Magsitrates’ Courts to answer to a charge which alleged that he attacked his reputed wife with a cutlass.

Forty-eight-year-old Andre Robertson of Roxanne Burnham Gardens was not required to plead to the indictable charge which read that on Friday, October 23, at his Roxanne Burnham Gardens residence, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the Virtual Complainant (VC) Denice Fredricks with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm. The Administration of Justice Act was applied and the accused denied the allegation.

According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Simone Payne, the accused and the VC are reputed husband and wife who have one child together. The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question, an altercation occurred between the two over a pair of slippers. Subsequent to the argument, while the VC was getting dressed for work, the accused attacked her with a cutlass and dealt her a chop to her arm and a stab to her abdomen. The accused reportedly injured himself during the incident as well.

The VC argued with the prosecution’s facts differ greatly from what she alleged in her statement. She claimed that it appears that the statements have been tampered with and requested that this be investigated. The Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence; adding that the two live together and the accused may interfere with the VC. The Magistrate remanded the man to prison and transferred the matter to Court One for November 5

Officer fingered in alleged sexual assault of female rank elevated to Deputy Commander

NOVEMBER 1, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

– victim’s mother demands justice

The mother of a young female Police Constable is beginning to lose faith in the organization to which she entrusted her daughter almost a year and a half ago.
The woman, whose daughter has alleged that she was the victim of sexual molestation by her Officer in the district in which she was working, is not too convinced that there will be justice in this mater despite the assurance that an investigation was done by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
In fact, it’s been almost two months since the incident and to date it does not appear as if charges will be laid against the Officer.
In fact, the Police Force has elevated the said officer to the post of Deputy Commander of the very Division in which the incident reportedly took place. For her part, the female Constable was posted to a city police station where she is reportedly being ridiculed by some of her colleagues for reporting the matter.
With nowhere to turn, the female Constable’s mother sought out the media, this newspaper in particular, to express her concern.
She said that since the matter involved a senior rank of the Force, she sought to have an audience with Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud but her efforts have so far been futile.
Except for a statement on the matter from Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, many have been silent, including local women’s groups which have in the past been vigilant against alleged sexual misconduct against females by persons in authority.
The elderly woman, who is physically challenged and is unable to walk freely, told this newspaper that she is determined to get justice for her daughter.
In an exclusive interview with this newspaper, the woman said that her daughter joined the Guyana Police Force 15 months ago. Not long after graduating from the police college, she was posted to the out of town community near the border with Brazil.
The woman said that she was not too worried when her young daughter was posted there, since her father, the late ASP Ronald Charles, was a member of the Force as well as her daughter’s uncle who is also a current Assistant Superintendent of Police.
β€œI had no problem with them sending her there because I know she could take care of herself and I thought that the exposure would be good for her.”
She said that her daughter is not the type to be easily influenced by β€œbad elements”. β€œThey take one year investigating her before she became a police (woman).”
She recalled that some time in early September, she received a telephone call from her daughter, informing her about the incident.
She recalled that it was a Sunday and her daughter said that she was off-duty and was at her quarters preparing to do some laundry when another rank went over to her and told her that the officer (name given) wanted her to fill in for another Constable at the station since he had to go out.
Not wanting to disobey the order, the young enthusiastic female Constable left her washing and went across to the station, but did not meet the officer there.
While at the station, the officer called and instructed her to come to his quarters to meet him.
β€œRemember it’s an Officer and she decided to comply,” the woman related.
According to the woman, when her daughter arrived at the Officer’s quarters, having walked through the broiling heat of the location, she was in beads of perspiration.
The woman explained that her daughter told her that the officer’s quarters does not have much furniture, so when the Officer invited her daughter to have a seat, her only recourse was to sit on the only chair that was in his room.
The woman said that the Officer offered her a beer which she graciously accepted since she had become thirsty as a result of the intense heat.
She said that the Officer told her daughter that he wanted his hair dyed and his uniformed pressed since he was required to attend court the following day.
β€œAs an Officer, again, she decided to comply, so she started pressing the clothes after she had finished drinking the beer,” the woman said.
The Officer then started a conversation with the Constable.
β€œHe start telling her, so long she come up there and if she ain’t got no boyfriend yet and if she had sex.”
The woman said that her daughter related that she was surprised by the conduct of the officer but continued to press the uniform, while β€œkeeping her guard up.”
β€œShe told him that she β€˜ain’t come up here for that’. She said that while pressing the clothes, this man just advance to her and start rubbing her. She said, β€˜Mommy, I never feel no way so in my whole life, how this thing happen’.”
While all of this was taking place, another who knew she had left go to the Officer’s quarters, came calling for her.
However the officer himself went out to the rank, and reportedly told him that the female constable had already left.
β€œShe said she hear the Officer telling the rank, β€˜She is not here, she left and gone already’.”
The woman said that her daughter became afraid, especially when the Officer came back into the room and began grappling with her, trying to kiss her.
The female cop told her mother that she resisted the Officer’s advances.
Sensing that the Constable’s colleagues would be looking for her, the Officer left the quarters, and using this window of opportunity, the female cop left the ironing and fled.
She immediately contacted her uncle, who is stationed at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
β€œShe so ashamed about what happen that she didn’t tell anybody; she only call her uncle. He’s the first person she call and then she call me and tell me what happened. She tell me that she was coming home. β€˜Ah coming out from hey’. So I say, Lord is what is this now?”
Kaieteur News was reliably informed that the file on the matter was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions with a certain recommendation from the OPR.
However, it was sent back to the police with a request for clarification on certain aspects, which according to a source, have nothing to do with the allegation made by the victim.
She said that she read this newspaper’s report about the alleged incident and felt comfortable that something was being done about it.
But she waited for that to happen and so far it has not. So with nowhere to turn to, the cop’s mother came to this newspaper.
β€œI am wondering why it taking so long because I reading about other matters that come up already and I am not hearing anything.”
β€œThis thing happen in the Guyana Police Force, so if my daughter does not get justice what will the public think about the force?”
She said that she is surprised that the Officer at the centre of the matter is still on the job. As a matter of fact he is now a Deputy Commander, especially since the ranks who went to his quarters to enquire about her daughter have also been transferred to a remote interior location.
β€œThat is victimization, man!” she lamented.
β€œWhat is the Force trying to tell me? What picture are they portraying there when you do something like that? I don’t feel they should have this man working; they should have him under some disciplinary action. If it was a Corporal or so, you believe they woulda have him there?”
The woman said that she went to seek a meeting with Commissioner Persaud but was told by a staff at the office that she should speak to the Commander of the Division in which the incident occurred.
β€œWhen you look at it, he is sending us to speak to persons where this Officer is the Deputy Commander. That ain’t make no sense!” the woman declared.
Sexual harassment of junior female police ranks by senior male Officers is nothing new in the Guyana Police Force and other disciplined services. There have been several instances over the years which have gone unreported for fear of victimization.
This newspaper was reliably informed that only recently, a similar matter against a police Officer was discontinued because a young female Constable declined to pursue it further.
This was despite the matter being thoroughly investigated and engaging the attention of the Police Service Commission.
A week ago, the Director of Prison, Welton Trotz  was sent packing after he was belatedly charged with sexually assaulting one of his female ranks, an incident which allegedly occurred way back in January this year.

Psychiatric car thief repeats crime

A 24-year-old patient of the National Psychiatric Hospital was on Friday placed before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court Two of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with stealing a car, his fourth offence of that nature.

Repeat offender, Raymond Samaroo

Raymond Samaroo, a minibus driver, of 20 Owen Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which read that on October 28 at Station Street, Kitty, he stole one Toyota Allion valued $3 million; the property of the Virtual Complainant (VC) Eon Pearson. When the Administration of Justice Act was applied, the accused entered a not guilty plea.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones did not reveal the particulars surrounding the charge; however, it was revealed that the accused was released on $150,000 bail on a similar matter the day before committing the offence. The accused has been previously charged for three offences similar in nature. In his previous appearances, the court heard that Samaroo was charged for stealing a 4-Runner in a similar manner while the driver was purchasing a meal at a Chinese restaurant. It was while he was on bail for that charge that he stole a car while the owner was still seated in the driver’s seat. The Prosecutor objected to bail on these grounds.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat made an application for bail stating that his client suffers from a mental disease and could not be held accountable for his actions as he suffers from delusions and amnesia.
The Attorney requested that he be placed on bail so that he could receive his monthly treatment. Bail was denied and the matter will return to Court on November 7.

Missing Parika taxi driver found dead

THE body of the missing taxi driver from Parika, Region 3 (West Demerara/Essequibo) was found in a canal aback of Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice early yesterday morning.A group of West Coast Berbice men going into the backdam to hunt iguanas came upon the badly decomposed body of Shurland Dalloo, 33, of 55 Parika around 07:30 hrs.
The body was discovered tucked under aquatic weeds and may have been there for a number of days since the area is off the main road from Onverwagt to the Abary River and is relatively isolated.
The forehead of the dead man had been bashed in making facial recognition impossible. The extent of the damage suggested that he had been bludgeoned to death.
Yesterday relatives of the dead man travelled from Parika to West Coast Berbice and positively identified him by means of the clothing he had been wearing when he left home at 07:30 hrs in his taxi to ply the Parika to Georgetown route on Monday, October 26 last.
Relatives said that the discovery had ended an almost countrywide search for the 33-year-old man after he failed to return home from operating his taxi that day.
β€œWe searched in Linden, in the Rupununi, in Mahdia along the East Bank Highway, West Demerara, all over. Many of his taxi driving colleagues were involved,” his uncle-in-law said.
Others who declined to be named said that although the news of the discovery was horrifying, at least they felt some closure in the discovery of his remains.
They expressed hopes that the police would soon arrest the perpetrators of the brutal act.
Dalloo went missing on October 26th last.
He left his home at 07:30 in his hire car, a silver grey Carina, registration number HB 8739, and failed to answer phone calls on his cell phone around 12:30 hrs.
According to reports a mini-bus driver who is a friend of the dead man saw him inside his vehicle parked on the   Flour Mill Road at Eccles, East Bank Demerara with two men inside around the same time.
The man said that Dalloo hailed him and put on the hazard lights of his vehicle.
He returned the call but did not stop since he was transporting passengers and he felt that Dalloo was merely hailing him as he usually did.
Reports said that the driver subsequently realised to his chagrin, that Dalloo was probably being held hostage at the time and trying to attract his attention so that he could assist him in getting out of the situation.
Dalloo has left to mourn his parents, one brother and his wife.
The body of the dead taxi driver was taken to the mortuary at Fort Wellington where a post-mortem is expected to be performed today.
The vehicle driven by Dalloo at the time of his disappearance has not yet been recovered.
The police said that investigations are continuing.

A YOUNG woman and man were found dead on the Kingston seashore yesterday afternoon in what appears to be a suicide pact. The two persons, of East Indian ancestry, were found at some time around 16:00 hrs by joggers who stumbled on the bodies and immediately raised an alarm. Up to press time, police had not identified the bodies.

The young lady was found clad in a neon-green pants and a black top, while the young man was clad in a black pants with a white vest and a red belt. Reports indicate that the police have ruled out the possibility of a homicide, given that there were no marks of violence on the bodies. Police suspect that the two may have died after ingesting poison. A few bottles with what the police suspect to be the remaining poison were removed from the scene as evidence.

Police Commander Clifton Hicken has said the bodies are yet to be identified, and no forms of ID were uncovered at the scene.

According to reports, the two men went into Gobin’s Grocery Store at Port Mourant pretending to be customers but subsequently whipped out handguns and held the owners of the business hostage along with five staff members and 11 customers.
Co-owner of the store, Rhada Gobin told this publication that she was doing some administrative work when the bandits struck.
She said a popular beverage company truck had just arrived at the store for routine delivery and she was in the process of paying $1.1 million to the sales representative.
β€œTwo boys walk in, well-dressed up, neat and ask β€˜Aunty Rhada you have Heineken?,’ and Ah say no. So they turn to leave and them turn around and ask me if I have Guinness. They give me a $1000 and say they want three Guinness. Then they pull out a gun and put it on a lady head at the counter and say β€˜nobody don’t move.’ Then tell every we to lie down pun the ground,”
She said one of the bandits discharged a shot in the shop and demanded that she hand over cash and jewellery. One of the bandits also threw a bag at her and ordered her to pack the money and jewellery into the bag.
β€œHe tell me open all the draw and take out all the money. So I open all the draw and take out all the money and full up in the bag. Then he start to cuss nasty, saying β€˜go and bring all the so-and-so millions what you get’ and Ah tell he that everything deh right here and he take the gun and hit me in the head and me fall own,” the traumatised woman related.”
The customers who were in the shop at the time were also robbed of their valuables including cash, jewellery and cellular phones.
Gobin said the men carried away about $500,000 in jewellery from her collection, in addition to the cash.
According to her, the robbers used an overseas-based Guyanese who was in the shop at the time, as a human shield as they made their escape.
β€œThey put the gun at the lady neck and back to back to the road and jump on a motorbike and ride away.”
She said the men destroyed the surveillance footage from her CCTV cameras before leaving.
Shortly after, villagers went in search of the robbers but came up empty-handed.

CG bandits storm America St …rob money changers, shoot in the air

By Leroy Smith
POLICE detectives last evening were busy processing the crime scene on America Street, Georgetown’s β€˜Wall Street’, after some ten masked gunmen daringly rode up on motorcycles and opened rapid fire while grabbing millions of dollars from money changers.

High caliber weapons were also used as this spent shell indicates.

High caliber weapons were also used as this spent shell indicates.

According to information received, the masked bandits who wore long sleeve jerseys appeared from almost every direction while firing into the air and at the money changers on America and Hinck Streets during rush hour in the busy commercial area.
While initial reports suggested that four persons were robbed, Ryburn Fraser of 2688 Manatee Place, South Ruimveldt Park, a father of four, suffered the biggest loss of approximately $1.6M.
Fraser was shot earlier this year in South Ruimveldt when he was robbed of more than one million dollars and gold but managed to drive himself to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Speaking with the media yesterday evening at the scene, Fraser said that the other three money changers were lying on the ground as the gunmen snatched their wads of cash but he was standing when he was relieved him of his bag of money and gold jewellery.

The visibly upset and shaken man bemoaned the security situation in the country, remarking that it seemed to be getting worse.
He lifted his jersey to show scars from the bullet wounds he sustained when he was robbed earlier this year. He related that he has been changing money for approximately twenty- five years and all he has achieved in life came through his currency changing business.
The man vowed, however, not to give up his trade which is vital for him to earn and provide for his family. He recalled returning to the street to resume his business after the attack earlier this year, through the generosity of his mother who sent him money from overseas.
He noted that it has been only about a month and two weeks since he returned to the America Street area. This newspaper was unable to speak with any of the others who were robbed as they were too distraught at the time.
There was already a high police presence on the scene when the Guyana Chronicle arrived. Several persons confirmed seeing some of the bandits brandishing β€˜long’ weapons and other small arms during the attack which lasted for approximately five minutes.
Several spent shells were seen scattered on the ground as the police hurried to secure them for ballistic tests. Meanwhile, this newspaper observed that there is at least one security camera in the area that should enable investigators to secure some useful footage.
During the shooting, several persons scampered for cover while others rushed mindlessly and dangerously towards the direction of the gunfire.

Mother fights off gun-toting bandit

A Berbician mother faced off with a gunman who entered her home with his accomplice on Tuesday morning in an

attempt to prevent them from hurting her two children.
The woman, identified as Miriam Hoosain of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was brutalised by the perpetrators who invaded her house around 06:00h on the day in question.
The victim’s husband had just left for work around 05:30h, while their 11-year-old son and six-year-old daughter were upstairs in the house when the incident took place.
Reports are that Hoosain was in her hammock meditating when the two men arrived at her gate asking if her husband was at home.
She related to Guyana Times that she replied in the affirmative, stating that her husband was upstairs.
However, instead of walking away from her gate, the duo quickly rushed into her yard; one remained with her and the other signalled his intent to go into the upper flat of her house.
β€œThey did it so fast. By the time I realised they were bandits, the one took out a gun and I started to scream. He lashed me and the next thing I knew was that he had me in the kitchen,” she said.

According to Hoosain, she had β€œblacked out” briefly, but as soon as she regained consciousness, she began to shout for help. It was then that the gun-toting bandit who was standing guard over her smashed the weapon into her face while telling her to remain quiet.
β€œHe threatened to shoot me…I heard the one upstairs opening drawers and asking the children where their mother’s bedroom is…So I get up after I catch myself again and I hold on to him and fight him and overpowered him,” the distraught mother told this publication.
She explained that the gun-toting bandit was caught off-guard and thus, having the upper hand, she held onto the intruder with a firm grip, forcing him to call his partner for help
Guyana Times  was told that it was at this moment Hoosain made the most out of the small timeframe she had to escape and ran out of her kitchen straight into her neighbour’s yard, while alerting them about the situation with shouts and screams.
This caused the two perpetrators to abort their mission and flee the woman’s house before they could be detained by anyone who might rush to her aid.
When asked why she made the daring move to wrestle with and fight off an armed man, she explained that while the blood was pouring down her face after being hit with the gun, all she could think of was her two children alone in the upper flat of the house with an armed bandit.
When this newspaper visited Hoosain on Tuesday, the woman could barely open her eyes. She had already sought medical attention and received two stitches on her face.
According to the injured woman, the bandits did not succeed in executing their daring attempt of a robbery, since they left empty handed.
Meanwhile, her husband, Feroze Hoosain told Guyana Times  that he was not allowed to leave his job and go home when he received information about his wife’s injuries and the attempted robbery at his house.
He stated that he received the information about what had occurred in his absence around 08:30h, but could not leave his work site until 14:00h.
It must be noted that he is employed as a security guard at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).
Guyana Times  further understands that Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) Chairman Vickchand Ramphal visited the traumatised family and expressed his concerns over the recent upsurge of criminal activity in the community.

La Raisonable, Mahaicony yesterday afternoon.
The cops have managed to capture one of the bandits after the stolen car they were using in their getaway crashed into a trench at Fairfield, Mahaica, a few miles away, while they were trying to elude a trailing police vehicle.
The men had earlier held 45-year old business woman, Lakranie Singh, and her employees at gunpoint, and after beating her savagely about her body, escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash, jewellery and other valuables.
The men appeared to be well informed about the supermarket layout since they also took away a DVR, which recorded footage from surveillance cameras that are located at strategic points on the premises.
A shaken Lakranie Singh, who was treated at the Mahaicony Hospital for injuries she received, told this newspaper that she was on the premises with her workers around 14:00 hours when the four bandits stormed the place.
The woman said that while two of the bandits accosted her workers, one of them snatched her and dragged her into the supermarket, beating her, while demanding cash and valuables.
β€œThey proper beat me, and pull me inside. They beat me terrible,” Singh told Kaieteur News.
She said the bandit warned her not to make noise to alarm anyone.
β€œI had on some Indian wear and he took that,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, the other bandits were busy robbing her employees and rummaging through her property, looking for valuables.
According to Mrs. Singh, customers who were about to enter the supermarket, saw what was taking place and backed off and alerted other residents.
The villagers responded but by the time they were fully mobilized, the bandits had made a hasty retreat, using Singh’s Toyota IST to aid in their getaway.
But from all indications, their getaway plan hit a snag when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a trench.
The bandits, sensing that they were being followed quickly exited the car and bolted into the nearby backlands, with the police in hot pursuit.
However one of them did not make it far as he was captured not far from the crashed car.
Police recovered the stolen DVR, and some wet money.
Kaieteur News understands that the remaining fleeing bandits managed to make it to the cover of the thick bushes of the backlands. Up to late last night they had managed to remain at large, despite more ranks being deployed into the backlands to flush them out.
There are reports that a car which was believed to have transported the men to the robbery, was seen circling the Mahaicony district, apparently to pick them up and bring them away from the area. But according to reports the police were informed and a patrol was sent out to track the vehicle down, but by then it had disappeared.
Yesterday’s robbery is reminiscent of a similar operation last week when bandits raided a Mahaica rice farmer’s home and escaped with his car after robbing him and his family of an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery.
On that occasion, a detective from the Mahaica Police Station managed to track them down to the village of Ann’s Grove where two of them were captured.
The stolen car was recovered the following day, ditched near the Clonbrook seawall.

Essequibo businessman robbed again

– had been robbed, chopped in Feb

BY INDRAWATTIE NATRAM

Thieves on Wednesday morning pounced on an Essequibo businessman and carted away a large amount of groceries from the man’s bond.
Reports are that businessman Asif Khan Haniff of Zorg Village, Essequibo Coast who operates a wholesale facility, heard a strange sound in his yard and his dogs began barking at about 00:30h on Wednesday morning. This prompted the businessman to look through his window, and as he did, he saw several masked men in his yard. This is the second time for the year Haniff has being robbed.
The businessman told Guyana Times that when he peered through his window, one of the men saw him and pointed a gun at him and shouted β€œshut up”.
According to the businessman, he feared for his life and that of his family and so he moved from the window and called the Police. He said when he called the Police, he was told that the patrol squad was at Charity and that he was to remain vigil.
The businessman told this newspaper that as he waited for the Police, the men loaded a large number of items from his storage bond, including bags of potatoes, bales of toilet paper, boxes of butter among other items.
β€œWe screamed till we get hoarse for help, the vision of our last robbery was coming back to us vividly, we wanted help,” the businessman related.
He told Guyana Times that an hour later, the Police still did not arrive and the men had left by then. He said that after the men left, he went to the Suddie Police Station and reported the incident.
According to the businessman, the thieves left a blue bicycle behind. He related that the Police visited the scene and launched an investigation. One person was arrested and is assisting Police with their investigation.
Haniff told this publication that several years ago, he applied for a firearm licence but that application is still pending. He said that his family continues to live in fear as this is the second time this year they have lived through this horrid ordeal.
On February 10, Haniff along with his wife Bibi Shaneeza Khan were brutalised by four masked bandits. The men brazenly entered their home and beat them. During that incident, the businessman was chopped. On that instance, the bandits managed to carted away $250,000 cash, phone cards, jewellery and groceries before escaping.
Only recently, on October 24, Bhesham Seepersaud, of Zorg Public Road, a Sale Agent attached to Edward B Beharry Group of Companies, was robbed by bandits.

Over 3100 traffic violations caught on CCTV

… all city streets to get cameras – Minister Ramjattan

Close to 99 per cent of over 3100 traffic violators facing prosecution by the Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department

Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan addressing the launch of road safety month at the ACICC

Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan addressing the launch of road safety month at the ACICC

are violations caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. This is according to Public Security Minister and Third Vice President, Khemraj Ramjattan.
Addressing the launch of road safety month at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, on Wednesday, Minister Ramjattan assured that the Ministry has been doing its best to ensure there is a reduction of these violations.
In this light, he revealed that the Ministry early this year commenced a new development, whereby the CCTV cameras around the city are being used to catch those committing traffic crimes.
According to Minister Ramjattan, to date, these cameras have captured over 3100 offences. He said that almost 99 per cent of these violators have pleaded guilty and are before the courts. β€œThey are pleading guilty because they cannot get away from the fact that it is them on the cameras,” he said.
Road fatalities, however, remain high, the Minister noted, pointing out that this is because the CCTVs are only located in some streets in Georgetown. He noted that in light of this, the Ministry, as part of its long-term effort, will install CCTV cameras in all city streets.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility
During his short speech, the Minister also lauded the effort of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) for pushing the agenda of road safety in Guyana. He noted that while the NRSC will do its parts with support from central government, road safety is everyone’s responsibility. He pointed out that to a large extent, the damage and the destruction that is caused by road accidents are as a result of that deficiency in individual responsibility.
β€œWe are the sole cause of the road accidents around us and we have to be the cure of that disease,” he said.
The Public Security Minister noted that this responsibility has to be cultivated from a young age, and that the Education Ministry has a prime role to play in this regard.

Enterprise businessman, bandits trade bullets

It was a war zone in Enterprise, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday evening after three armed men and a shopkeeper traded bullets as they attempted to rob his businessplace. The incident occurred at about 20:00h.

According to information, Rosita Balram was in the shop attending customers when the men entered and presented a list of items they wanted to purchase.

Reports state that as the woman gathered the items on the list, her husband who is a licensed firearm holder realised something was amiss.

This newspaper understands that after observing the manner in which the men were behaving, the businessman concealed himself so that the men could not observe him.

The newspaper was told the businessman’s wife tallied the cost of the items and informed the men. At that point one of the men pretended that he was taking out the money from his pocket but rather pulled out a handgun and discharged a round in the direction of the woman. Reports are that upon seeing the gun the woman and her son ran for cover.

The businessman upon hearing the first shot retaliated and discharged several rounds in the direction of the men who retreated and escaped in the nearby cane fields.

The police have since retrieved several .9mm spent shells from the scene.

When contacted Thursday, Roso, commonly called, of Ferdinand Street, Enterprise, stated that while putting together the items for the men, she noticed one of them walking in and out of the shop. From all indications she stated, he was monitoring the area.

Bandits nabbed after Mahaicony supermarket robbery … one shot, another accidentally chopped

TWO suspects in the brazen robbery committed at J. Singh & Sons Supercenter at Mahaicony East Coast Demerara, Wednesday evening were arrested in the Mahaicony area yesterday morning. According to reports, the two suspects were at the time of their apprehension hiding in a bushy area which farmers were clearing with cutlasses. One of the suspects was accidently chopped while hiding under some leaves while the other bandit was held later after being shot by the police as he made a dash to freedom.

Both of them along with another suspect who was apprehended on Wednesday after they committed the robbery remain at the Georgetown Public Hospital under police guard. The third suspect was severely beaten by angry residents who had come out to assist in apprehending the men.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday afternoon with a partly swollen and black and blue right eye, proprietress Lakerany Singh said that she along with two other staff members and her son were at the business premises, where her home is also located, when the bandits arrived.
She said they were four bandits and as they entered her premises she bid them β€˜good afternoon’ but only two of them responded before making their way into her supermarket. The woman said that within seconds the men began putting on white gloves and before she knew it they were ordering everyone to be silent as they took control of the business place.
As the men were pulling on their gloves, two customers who were about to enter the store saw them and made an about turn and reportedly made contact with the police at Mahaicony Police Station.

However, it took the police some two hours to arrive at the location although they are just five minutes’ drive away from the supermarket that was being robbed according to the business woman. And during this time, the victims were being brutalized at the hands of the gun and knife-wielding bandits.

During the robbery, the victims were ordered to lie on the floor as their valuables were stripped from them. The proprietress who pretended to be just another worker at the establishment kept denying that she was the owner while the men demanded to know the whereabouts of the owner and the location of the money and other valuables.
The woman’s son who was the cashier at the time was held up by one of the bandits who demanded that he hand over the day’s sales and he complied. The men also demanded the keys to the upper flat of the building and that was also handed over.
Once upstairs the men ransacked the place while the proprietress and another employee were held in a room where one of the bandits saw the CCTV system and became enraged as he demanded the disc. He then began beating the woman to the point that she was bleeding and almost blacked out.
The bandits subsequently made their escape using the woman’s car which was later abandoned after the businesswoman’s son and her husband gave chase.
The Guyana Chronicle observed yesterday that the police were at Mahaicony after they had received information that one of the suspects in the robbery was hiding. The police had one of their K-9 dogs and a metal detector when they were able to unearth a 9MM pistol. The police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Shopkeeper remanded on narcotics charges

A South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, shopkeeper was on Friday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court Two of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, after he appeared before her slapped with several narcotics trafficking charges.

Forty-year-old Warren Stouffle of 3 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, denied the allegation which read that between September 4 and November 4, at Georgetown, he trafficked narcotics; that is to say, he conspired with Shanda Nicasie Nickels to traffic 4.160 kilograms of cocaine. He also pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on November 4 at Aubrey Barker Road, he had in his possession six grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones revealed to the court that these charges coincide with those of Nickels. It was related that Nickels was charged for drug trafficking and was sentenced to three years imprisonment at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on a related charge. The Prosecutor explained that Nickels gave a statement to the Police incriminating the defendant which indicated her willingness to testify against him. Based on information garnered from Nickels’ statements, the ranks went to the defendant’s home at Lot 3048 Aubrey Barker Road and not Lot 3 as was presented to the court by the defendant. He further related that on November 4, the ranks approached the defendant at the gate of his residence and carried a search on his person, during which the illegal substance was found in his pocket.

The defendant’s Attorney Euclin Gomes made an application for bail, after alleging that the charges were made due to an ongoing feud between the Police and Stouffle. The Prosecutor objected to bail, citing the nature and gravity of the charge, adding that there were no special reasons put forward for bail to be granted. The objections were upheld and bail was denied. The man was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Court Five for November 23 where it will appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore for report and fixture.

According to the particulars of the charge presented by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharrat Mangru, the woman frequently travels to London and when there she resides at 78 McDonald Hills. The Prosecutor related that on the day in question, the defendant who is a Guyanese citizen was an outgoing passenger headed to Port of Spain, Trinidad as an in transit passenger, with a connecting flight destined for London. The Prosecutor revealed that a routine search was carried out on her luggage by ranks of the Police Narcotics Unit. During the said search, two bottles of rum were found, one being 12-year-old rum and the other a 15-year-old Eldorado rum.

Tests to the rum resulted in the discovery of the bottles containing the illicit substance. Under caution, the woman allegedly told the ranks that her boyfriend gave her the rum to take overseas.

Prosecutor Mangru objected to bail on the ground that special reasons must be given to the court in order for bail to be granted, and in this case, this requisite was not met. The Magistrate remanded the woman to prison and the matter was adjourned to November 11.

Stayfree Alexander, one of the prime suspects in Wednesday’s robbery at a Mahaicony supermarket, has confessed to the murder of Linden businesswoman, Shevon Gordon, and to his involvement in at least two armed robberies in Berbice.
Crime Chief Blanhum said that Alexander is likely to appear in court this week in connection with the offences.
Alexander, known also as β€˜Gun Youth,’ is one of three men who police captured after an intense, 18-hour stakeout, in the wake of the attack at Mahaicony.
Police had said that Alexander had given them a fictitious name, but detectives eventually identified him.
One of his alleged victims, 45-year-old businesswoman, Shevon Gordon, was shot dead near her Block 22, Wismar, Linden home last April.
Two men were subsequently charged. Soon after, police received statements from individuals who identified β€˜Gun Youth’ as the person who pulled the trigger.
He is also a suspect in a grocery store heist at New Amsterdam, Berbice, which occurred in January. He was wounded after allegedly shooting at police ranks, but managed to escape.
Police have said that β€˜Gun Youth’ is also wanted for the attempted murder of a taxi driver, who was shot in East La Penitence this year.
Further, he is believed to have committed an armed robbery at a Popeye’s fast food establishment.
Alexander was captured Wednesday night after the car in which the Mahaicony bandits were escaping crashed at Mahaica.
Two other suspects were captured on Thursday after police ranks set fire to a bushy area in which the gunmen were hiding.
One of the bandits, a 21-year old labourer from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was shot in the right shoulder.
His alleged accomplice, a 51-year-old man from Charlestown, received several shotgun pellets to his face. He is likely to lose an eye.

Police were able to recover some of the stolen items, including a DVR, which had recorded some of the bandits’ operation, and some jewellery.

Man arrested after police rank rejects $30,000 bribe

NOVEMBER 8, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

A 34-year-old man of La Bonne Intention (LBI) got a rude awakening when his attempts to bribe a police officer at the Sparendaam Police Station resulted in him being arrested and placed in the lock ups.
Even more, he will face the courts for his costly mistake on Monday.
This incident will be a stark reminder that while bribery and corruption are issues that must be at the forefront of reforms, there are still honest and upstanding police officers determined to remain true to their duty of upholding justice.
The attempted bribery occurred on Friday last and was prompted by the man trying to secure the release of his relative, who had been earlier arrested for possession of cocaine.
According to reports, the relative was arrested after a stop and search conducted on his person, unearthed four grams of cocaine.
After being taken to the Sparendaam lockups, the man came to the station to negotiate for his release.
Employing cloak and dagger tactics, the man approached a Police Corporal and asked what he could do to secure his relative’s release, to which the Corporal reversed the question and asked him what he could do.
Heedless of the trap he was approaching, the man’s response was to offer the rank $10,000.
He was placed on the bench, warned and sent away.
However, he returned to the Corporal with the $30,000 which the Corporal received in the presence of other ranks.
Upon the Corporal enquiring what the money was for, the man indicated that it was to free his relative.
Here is where the man got the shock of his life. The police officer calmly counted the money, informed him that it is an offence to bribe an officer of the law and placed him under arrest.

A three-year-old feud over a woman, and other gang-related issues have left one Norton Street, Bagotstown family homeless and another in fear and mourning for a man wanted by police for murder.

Dead: Jermaine Roberts

Dead: Jermaine Roberts

Just after 12:15 hrs yesterday, 34 Norton Street, Bagotstown went up in flames. This incident occurred hours after one of its occupants, Anthony Trim, was identified as the trigger man who shot and killed Jermaine Roberts, 24, just outside the gate. The police identified the victim as Jermaine Simon called β€˜Lapsy’ of Lot 41 Norton Street, Bagotstown, EBD.
He was wanted by the police as the killer of Ryan Sooklall on March 1, 2015, at Providence, EBD. According to reports, he and Sooklall had a falling out that saw Sooklall shooting up his home. The next day he visited Sooklall and killed him.
Roberts (Simon) and Anthony Trim/Amsterdam (Soulgee) were said to have been friends who became long time rivals over a woman.
At the time of the fire, Trim’s 39-year-old brother, Marlon, and two of his children were at home.
He lived in the top flat while his little brother Anthony lived in the bottom flat.  The distraught man recounted, β€œI went upstairs with my two daughters’ (aged 9 and 6). I was lying in my bed then I feel a heavy, heavy heat, and when I look through the door all I see was sheer black smoke.”
He said that he grabbed his children and ran to safety leaving all his earthly possessions behind. β€œAll the things burn up as well as my children clothes.  Nothing (was) saved. The cabinet, TV, fridge, gas-stove, bed, wardrobe. I stranded right now,” the man who was burnt about his body just a month ago, said.
The man said that his little brother, Anthony, called Soulgee, in his late 20s, went on the run after being accused of shooting his rival hours earlier. The alleged perpetrator is still on the run.

He believes that the fire was as a result of arson as he claims that persons were standing outside of his home claiming that it was his brother who was the triggerman.
β€œDe crowd on the road de saying dem gon bun down Soulgee house since last night,” the bewildered Marlon Trim said.
The house was owned by their late mother, Barbara, and their uncle Michael Amsterdam of USA.
Compton Sparman, Guyana Fire Service Divisional Officer, said that the fire is most likely the result of arson. He said that the fire service was summoned at 12:25hrs and three vehicles were able to contain fire to the one wooden building.
Nicola Simon, 42, of 46 Norton Street, Bagotstown, the mother of the now dead Jermaine Roberts, of 24 Brutus Street, Agricola, was quick to refute allegations that her family was the perpetrator of arson.
Recounting events, the mother said that on Tuesday night, her son visited his grandmother’s home and spoke briefly then he left to find his grandmother at a shop in the street. β€œHe was on a bicycle and his sister was behind him, walking, to go meet his grandmother in the shop. Anthony Soulgee, when he reach me son, he fire a shot to my son head and he fall off he bicycle.”
Joverna Simons, the dead man’s sister, said she stood over her brother and started hollering. β€œI see Soulgee with a gun in he hand and tell me get meh S@#*# from there and I run because he point the gun at me.”

The young woman who said she witnessed the shooting alleges, β€œWhen he done I see he on a phone with the gun in he hand saying that he just kill me brother.”
The gunman who has a broken leg allegedly fled the scene with the aid of a crutch.
The man was shot to the middle of his forehead and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital because of the severity of his injury. He died at about 3:30hrs yesterday.
Dubbing the death of her second child as a surprise, Simon admitted that Jermaine and Anthony were friends but fell out about three years ago after which they were okay again.
β€œNot we and no fire. Me son dead; we ain’t got time with that. He shoot me son and I want the police to get him cause I see he with me own eye.”
The angry woman said that her son β€œhad to become a fugitive because Soulgee and he friends Francis David Degou, aka Cayenne, and Arif, called Abdool Browne, come threatening we up to (yesterday) morning. (My) son born and grow here and a crew always after me son.”
The killer is said to be related to Travis Rudder who was killed at Nandy Park earlier this year. Villagers noted that there is a gang that has been creating fear in the community on a regular basis. Soulgee is a member of that gang. β€œWhen dem come dem does come with the guns and dressed in black like if is police.”

9mm bandits attack remigrant family

NOVEMBER 12, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Three bandits, all armed with 9mm pistols, have left a remigrant Guyanese family traumatized after invading their home on Diwali night (Tuesday) and robbing them of an undisclosed amount in cash jewellery and high end electronic equipment.
And to make matters worse, Motielall, called Sunil, and his family are livid at the slow and callous response to their plight by the police although the Alberttown Police Station is just about four blocks away from their Peter Rose and Lance Gibbs Streets residence.
Motielall who returned with his family from Florida, USA, about two years ago, recalled that he was attending to some diyas outside his house with one of his two sons when the bandits struck.
The bandits had arrived in a white car which they parked on Peter Rose Street and entered, Motielall’s yard from the side entrance.
β€œI heard my wife screaming and the next thing we saw were two guys with guns in the kitchen with my wife and my older son…I saw another guy coming up the front steps,” Motielall recalled.
He said that the guns the bandits were carrying all appeared to be 9mm pistols and they were fitted with extended magazines.
According to Motielall, the men began threatening to kill them, while forcefully demanding β€œDe gold and US (currency)”
β€œThese guys don’t look like more than 26 years but all had 9mm,” Motielall said.
He stated that they gave the men everything they had. However, his son scuffled with one of the bandits when they tried to take his cellular phone.
β€œThat’s when they struck me in my head with a gun,” the re-migrant stated.
In addition to the cash and jewellery, the bandits made off with five cell phones, one Ipad and a laptop computer.
Kaieteur News understands that even as the robbery was taking place, neighbours were alerted to what was taking place and they tried to contact the police on the 911 hotline but were unsuccessful.
β€œThey (police) came about half hour later,” Motielall said.
According to an eyewitness the police gave a ridiculous excuse for not responding to the 911 call.
β€œThey say people does call and make them fools (and) that is why they don’t respond,” the eyewitness explained.
He told this newspaper that the ordeal was especially traumatic for his children.

Call 911? Maybe not… Gunmen rip door apart, terrorize family during robbery

NOVEMBER 13, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

In an age when phones dominate, calling 911 might not always be the best way to report an emergency.
One man in Tucville, Georgetown, said he was on his phone calling 911 while looking at four armed men as they tried, for more than 20 minutes, to gain entry into his neighbour’s home a little after 04:00 hrs on Wednesday.
The man said he stayed on the phone even as the gunmen successfully ripped his neighbour, former Lieutenant Colonel Charles Hutson’s back door apart and shook on the grillwork until a part of it broke.
This reportedly transpired at Lot 27-912 Tucville where the former army official resides with his family. Yesterday, Roland Hutson, the son of Charles Hutson, said that he and his family were asleep when his wife, Taryn Hutson, heard a commotion in the yard and woke him.
β€œShe heard a noise and when she peeped, she saw the four men at the back door. They jumped through the back fence by the alley way and come in the yard,” Hutson said.
He explained that just when his wife called out for him, he heard his father shouting in the bottom flat of the two-storey house.
β€œMy mom and dad stay downstairs and me, my wife and three children live upstairs,” Hutson said, adding that when he ran downstairs and into the kitchen, the men had already opened the door.
β€œTwo of them were pointing the gun at me while they were shaking on the grill to open it.”
The father of three said that at that point there was nothing he could have done, since the men were pointing two guns at him.
β€œI tell my mother and father to lock their bedroom door and when they (gunmen) come in, they tried to put me to lie down and when I refused, one of them took the gun and hit me in my head,” Hutson recalled.
He further revealed that in mere minutes, the men packed a television, a laptop computer and his cellular phone in their bag, including $100,000 and escaped after terrorizing his family.
They did not spare Hutson’s 15-year-old daughter. When she failed to follow their orders, one of the gunmen slapped her.
β€œThey even tried to get my parents’ bedroom door open but they couldn’t,” the father of three related.
He added that after the men made good their escape, they too tried to call 911, but no one answered. According to Hutson, he even visited the East La Penitence Police Outpost but there was a padlock on the gate.
β€œI called and called but no one answered,” the Tucville resident stressed.
Kaieteur News understands that half hour before the Hutson family was robbed and terrorized, the men broke and entered another home in the neighbourhood.

It was near pandemonium in the New Amsterdam market yesterday morning, as a lone gunman robbed the popular Hack’s Variety Stall, owned by Rashid Hack, and escaped with a bag of cash – not before firing shots in the air, which caused those in the market and its environs to run for cover.

According to reports, a variety of items are sold at the establishment, and the owner is a licenced Cambio dealer. The stall opened for business around 08:00 hrs and it was not too long after, that an individual dressed in a red shirt and black pants went to the premises under the pretext of conducting business.
The man suddenly whipped out a gun and held employee Alvin Mature at gunpoint, and demanded cash. Whilst using expletives the unmasked bandit pressed the gun to the man’s mouth threatening to shoot, if he didn’t hand over money. Two bags of money were then grabbed by the gunman.  The bandit, before leaving took another employee hostage and fired shots in the air. This caused other vendors and shoppers to scamper for cover. The man then ran out of the market with gun and bag in hand through heavy rain. He then ran towards New Street where an accomplice was awaiting on a motorcycle.  The men then rode up the one-way before turning into Lad Lane and disappearing in the vicinity of Angoy’s Avenue.
Speaking to the media, the stall owner stated that he was at home at the time of the robbery. He said that he received a telephone call about 08:30h informing him of the incident.
The businessman stated that he was out of the country for the past four weeks and only returned to the country on Tuesday.
He had left a large quantity of cash with his employees to conduct business, including making purchases.  He said the money included sales from this cambio business. He did not have a chance to go through the books and to do any banking. He had planned to do so yesterday. He stated that he lost over $2M. The man, who sells a variety of items including household and electrical items, stated that his business has been robbed over five times, including one occasion when an entire money chest was moved out.  He has been applying for a firearm licence for a long time, but was repeatedly denied.
An eyewitness stated that the thief was seen in the vicinity for some time before the stall opened and had told those around that he was waiting to do some business and β€œchange some money with Hack.”
A witness stated that he gave chase, but aborted his pursuit since he realized that the man had a gun and was not shy to use it.

Recounting events, Chunilall said at about 15:15 hrs two β€œyoung boys” came through the middle gate of the market and before they knew it, one placed a gun to his person.

The man’s wife was also in the shop. She said, β€œDem youngsters fired one shot at me and missed, after I step away in the shop.” The bullet left a hole in the wall.
After the unmasked youngsters collected the money boxes they walked out of the market through the back gate and entered a white station wagon.

Larceny offences continue to rock Wismar

As police in Linden, Region 10, work to curb the occurrence of a number of break and enter and larceny cases, there are presently complaints from more residents regarding stolen motorcycles.

One of the most recent cases involved the theft of a white Honda XR150L, valued $425,000 which was stolen from outside a home at Tank Street, Wisroc Housing Scheme, Wismar.

According to the owner of the motorcycle who spoke to this newspaper on the condition of anonymity, the motorcycle was removed from underneath the home sometime between 23:00h on Tuesday to 05:00h on Wednesday. He further related that he locked his motorcycle by way of securing it with the key and left it underneath the home at approximately 22:45h on Tuesday. Upon making checks the following morning the motorcycle was missing.

A report was made to the Wisroc Police Outpost and subsequently to the Wismar Police Station, where an investigation was launched.

When contacted by this newspaper on the issue of motorcycle thefts in the Linden community, E Division (Linden – Kwakwani) Commander Calvin Brutus confirmed two other cases which occurred in recent months at Wismar.

Residents have also voiced concerns over the issue, noting there are several cases of attempted theft and β€œstripping” of motorcycles that may have eventually gone unreported. Additionally, this newspaper learnt that a bicycle and other items were also stolen from outside a home at Half Mile, Wismar between the same period as the XL150L.

Only recently Commander Brutus had disclosed there was a trend in the number of break and enter and larceny cases at Wismar and named the Wisroc β€˜New Scheme’ as one of the affected areas.

He also urged residents to be β€œvigilant” and to report any suspected cases, stating that reports will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Crime not spiraling out of control, says Blanhum

NOVEMBER 14, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

– slams β€˜absurd’ media comparisons to β€˜crime wave’ era

β€˜Absurd’ was the way that Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum yesterday described some media reports which suggested that Guyana’s crime rate is out of control and that is reminiscent of the bloody 2002 period of brazen killings and kidnappings.
Blanhum produced figures to show that the crime rate has fallen from nine percent to eight percent during his tenure. He expressed optimism that serious crimes could drop further.
The Crime Chief made these observations yesterday at the Officers’ Training Centre, Camp Road, Eve Leary, while unveiling the Force’s security plans for the Christmas season.
Noticeably absent was Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud, who is overseas. Only a few members of the private sector attended.
Figures released by Blanhum for the period 2006 to 2015 show that there were 135 murders in 2006; 99 murders in 2007; 135 the following year; 97 in 2009; 115 in 2010; 108 in 2013; 121 in 2014; and 126 for the year.
He noted that there have been 477 fewer serious crimes this year than in 2006.
β€œDuring 2015, in June, when I took over as Crime Chief, we had a 13 percent  increase in serious crimes…and despite being bombarded by some sections of the media, we have still managed to bring the figures down from 13 percent to eight percent,” Blanhum said.
β€œAnd hadn’t we done anything, as some persons are trying to portray, we would have been by now at a 20 percent increase in serious crimes.
β€œSo we had the figures hovering between eight and 13 per cent, and we have managed to bring it down to eight percent. We envisage that by the end of this period, with the Christmas policing initiatives, we should bring it down to at least a minus one percent increase.”
β€œAll those headlines that we are bombarded with that crime is spiraling out of control, and nothing is being done, and that we lack the capacity to effectively deal with serious offences, is nothing short of absurd.”
The Crime Chief also noted that serious crimes tended to increase in election years. This was the case in 2006, 2011, and 2015.
But he noted that in 2013, there was also an increase in serious crimes.
β€œBut then we have persons who are trying to equate our current period with the 2002 crime wave period. If you look at the period 2015 that we are in, and compare that with 2006, we didn’t go back to 2002 when we had the crime wave, when there was rampant murder and shooting incidents and kidnappings.
β€œWe did a comparison with 2006 and at this period we have 477 fewer serious crimes.  So the question is how do we reconcile these reports that crime is spiraling out of control with the statistics before us?
The only possible and logical conclusion is that crime is not spiraling out of control, and we are not in those dark days.”
But Blanhum acknowledged that there was concern about the number of execution-style murders, with nine so far for the year, a figure that he said was on par with those in 2012.
There have also been six more murders than last year.
The Crime Chief also expressed concern about the spate of attacks on drivers and minibus passengers, particularly on East Bank Demerara.
He revealed that taxi drivers, particularly those working private hire, were relieved of their valuables and vehicles after unwittingly picking up criminal elements.
β€œSo this is an area of concern and we have started to address this. When we deploy roadblocks at strategic locations we are asking members of the public to bear with us.”
Other issues of concern Blanhum raised included the lax security precautions taken by members of the business community, including when transporting large sums of cash.
Other challenges were the lack of DNA facilities, and police corruption. There have also been some 133 more break and enter and larceny incidents, due to the development of new housing schemes.
Some successes included the seizure of 98 illegal firearms.
He said that the majority of illegal firearms were coming from Brazil. Others were coming from the USA and from Europe.

Reports are that the City Constabulary Officers went to the businessman’s property and removed a quantity of steel and decking. This prompted the businessman to enquire the reason for the removal of the items. However, he was met with a hostile response, following which he was punched to the face and about the body.

Bandits invade former Crime Chief’s home

NOVEMBER 16, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

…Assistant Commissioner relieved of personal jewellery worth $400,000

(By Mondale Smith)

Less than six months after being replaced as Crime-Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police Leslie James and his family were made to endure several minutes of terror when gun tooting bandits stormed his home early yesterday morning, making off with almost $400,000 in jewellery.
The ordeal that has left his two children traumatized, took place just about 3:00hrs yesterday at James’ lot 453 Hendy Street, Block X, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara home, and lasted for 12 minutes.  The jewellery were taken from the former Crime Chief and his wife Jacqueline James, the Retail Sales Manager for Guyoil.
The attack will add to the perception that criminal elements are operating with impunity, despite the utterances by senior officials of the Guyana Police Force that security is being beefed up for the festive season.
The former Head of the Criminal Investigations Department told Kaieteur News that his family retired to bed in the top flat just around midnight on Saturday.
At about 3:00hrs yesterday he heard a noise in the bottom flat of his house and along with his wife, he decided to investigate.
β€œWhen we came out the bedroom, I saw about three men coming up the step. Clearly, one had a weapon and I immediately looked down and told them take what they want and they can go.”

The former Crime Chief points to the window through which the gunmen entered his home.

The former Crime Chief points to the window through which the gunmen entered his home.

One of the men said β€œtake their jewels”, which included James’ wedding ring and another ring as well as his wife’s engagement ring and wedding band.
β€œI didn’t look at them because I didn’t know if they had my family. I made sure that they did not see me trying to determine their identity for fear of myself and family being harmed.”
The men took the jewellery and they attempted to exit the house but the door was locked so they had to resort to shattering a window on the south western side of the house to make good their escape.
According to James, the men gained entry to his house by prying open a window in the bottom flat.
As the men were exiting, the Crime Chief daughter’s screams for help alerted neighbours and the men ran west along the road.
One neighbour who was heading home at the time said he was threatened by four men with guns who were making their getaway on foot.
James who is on Annual Vacation Leave said, β€œThe safety for me and family was paramount. I hadn’t a clear assessment of how many were in the home so I didn’t react to anger the men.”
He however said that his neighbours have ideas of who the perpetrators might be.
James said his weapon was in his home but he opted to remain calm and urged his family to do likewise.
β€œClearly they didn’t come to harm anyone because there was no talk of shooting anyone while they were in my house, so to me, it was clearly a robbery.”
The men also took a stereo system valued at about $140,000 but that system was dropped on the roadside.
A neighbour who identified himself as β€˜Trini’ said he heard one of the robbers telling another robber, β€œbannaz is the Crime Chief house we just been in!”
According to the neighbour, that statement apparently resulted in the bandit who was carrying the music system, dropping it and running southwards.
β€œI grabbed a cutlass and run out when I heard the (former) Crime Chief daughter screaming but the men see me and one ah dem seh β€˜leh we shoot he’, and I run inside. Then they went to β€˜Strong Man’s’ (another neighbor) house and chase he back in he house. Then they run up the road to the blacka.”
Trini reiterated that the streets in Sophia need more lights.  β€œThis place full of thieves who does walk in twos and threes.”
Two Police patrols were summoned and the area was searched. James said he communicated his ordeal to Commander of C Division Assistant Commissioner Marlon Chapman as well as his successor Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum and got the fullest cooperation and support.
On CRIME as a former Crime Chief
The former Crime Chief also took the opportunity to weigh in on the current crime situation.  James said that any increase in crime, even if it is one percent, is a cause for concern.
β€œI’m not sure if it was a random storming of my home, except to say that I’m a consummate professional who always execute my duties with professionalism.”
James noted too that the area is normally patrolled by police but β€œas with everything else, there is always need for improvements in security.”
The community recently formed a Community Development Council- James is one of the Executive members.
His opinion is that there appears to be significant amount of idle time among the youth population and according to him β€œfrom how some crimes are committed, they clearly have no respect for anyone.”
James who served as Crime Chief from April 8, 2014 to June 30, 2015, is advising the general citizenry that β€œshould you experience any storming of home by criminal elements, it is always better to cooperate, as your life is more important than any material thing.”
β€œI’m concerned to know that despite my status as former Crime Chief that my home was stormed and I was robbed… so what of the ordinary person in communities? I commend the current initiatives in train, which I support, to address the crime situation and I commend the current initiatives for the Christmas policing strategies.”
He also expressed confidence that once what is on paper is put into effect, it should yield results.
Jail Time is waste time
James further stated that parents, guardians, community leaders and social workers need to be part of efforts to bring the youth into the understanding that crime is not the only way to a better life.
He also made a pitch in support of former Parliamentarian and attorney at Law James Bond’s 007 promotion initiative, stating that the promotion is a profound one because youths need to understand that jail time is waste time.

terrorised the owner’s brother and several workers while demanding money and gold.
The injured man was identified as Raimundo Malhaeo. He was reportedly struck to his head by one of the men with a gun after he refused to hand over the gold. Other miners were also gun-butted in the hope of them handing over the precious mineral.
After beating the men, the gunmen threatened to kill them if they remained on the camp grounds and told them they would return. A few of the men reportedly left in a helicopter while the others did so by land.
Three of the men were subsequently identified by the miners as three well-known businessmen in Bartica.
It is believed that the attack stemmed from the double purchase of the mining block that the Brazilians were occupying for the past three years. The mining block was reportedly sold to the Brazilians by Marcus Debareu.
Speaking with Guyana Times, an official of the mining company stated that at the time of the attack, the owner, Nide Carneiro Malhao was not on site.
She explained that a few years ago, the businessman would have purchased four blocks for a total of $60 million, but was only given the paperwork for one. To date, the legal paperwork for the remaining three blocks has not been handed over to the Brazilian.
The woman stated that from all indications, the raid on the camp is intended to motivate the Brazilians to pack up and leave. Guyana Times was further told that based on information gathered, the block that the Brazilian was occupying was resold to another businessman.
Guyana Times further understands that one of the men who were spotted in the helicopter was recently in hot water after he defrauded a businessman millions of dollars while another was about to have operations at his camp halted by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
The Police have since launched an investigation into the attack and a report was made to the GGMC on the issue.

Guyanese hairdresser busted at JFK with 105 cocaine pellets in stomach

A 26-year-old Guyanese hairdresser has possibly made history, at least locally, for swallowing a total of three pounds of cocaine pellets as a narcotics mule out of Guyana. As a consequence of her feat, she is now in US custody.

 Shureen Giddings

Shureen Giddings

Arrested on November 9, Shureen Giddings was intercepted shortly after arriving at the John F. Kennedy Airport, New York, on a flight from Guyana, and subsequently excreted 105 pellets. Sources close to Guyana’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit say she has β€œset a local record for swallowing such a large number of pellets”.
The Beauty Shop operator has been charged with knowingly and unlawfully importing cocaine into the United States and is currently being held at the Brooklyn Metro Detention Centre.
The mother of one, according to court documents, was the subject of a Customs and Border Protection examination and was arrested minutes after her arrival at JFK.
She was subject to a body search and her luggage was also searched for drugs after being questioned extensively. According to reports, the woman admitted that she had swallowed cocaine-filled pellets and initially excreted 17 after asking to use the restroom.
Those pellets tested positive for the presence of cocaine and US Law Enforcement agents subsequently escorted the woman to a medical facility situated at the airport for an x-ray examination where more pellets were seen in her stomach.
This resulted in her immediate arrest after which the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit in Guyana was informed of the bust and is carrying out investigations locally.

Police smash major crime gang

– Wanted men found in Berbice hotel with teen girls

Police in Berbice have arrested six persons in a hotel including three wanted men and three teenage girls, in what can be described as the smashing of a major crime ring.  The arrests followed two recent high profile robberies that occurred in New Amsterdam. Two of the men are wanted for a robbery last Saturday morning while another is wanted for a heist at the N/A market last Thursday.
On Monday evening after making certain observations and gathering valuable information the cops swooped down on a popular hotel in New Amsterdam.
The known characters, including a deportee, were found inside the hotel along with three teenage girls. The girls aged 16, 17 and 19 years were found in separate rooms with the men.
On Thursday last, around 08:30 hrs, a lone gunman described as a β€˜red skin man’ wearing a red shirt and black pants had robbed the popular Hack’s Variety Stall of approximately $2M. He fired a shot before escaping out of the market and joined an accomplice on a motorcycle and fled the scene.
A number of persons were arrested and subsequently released as the police investigation gathered momentum.
Meanwhile, on Saturday morning  around 01:20 hrs, three bandits  armed with guns and cutlasses invaded the home of 38-year-old businessman Nicholas Harrinandan, owner of JN Supermarket, and his wife, Uwattie Harrinandan, a teacher, at Lot 22/23 Nurseville Housing Scheme, Tucber Park, New Amsterdam. .
During the home invasion, the bandits dealt Harrinandan several chops about his head and face. The victim in return armed himself with a chopper and dealt 26-year-old Brian Dhanphat – a known character of Smythfield, New Amsterdam, Berbice β€“ chop wounds to his head, face, hand and foot. The bandit who got trapped behind a wall divider fell to the ground screaming for help.
Dhanphat who was arrested in the businessman’s house was taken to the New Amsterdam hospital for emergency treatment. At the hospital he stated that his two cohorts were Kevin Sandy and Troyden Trellis.  He had also told those present that he was kidnapped and taken to rob the business premises.
Dhanphat was discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital on Tuesday. Realizing that his first set of β€œtunes” were not gelling, the career bandit changed his tune, and began singing that he was in the  businessman’s house because of a drug deal which did not work out when he was caught in the fracas.
The other man found in the hotel, fits the description of the man who robbed the stall in the New Amsterdam market.
A motor cycle used by the men was also seized.  It was found at an abandoned gas station opposite the hotel.
According to a source, the capture of the men represents a significant headway into the smashing of a major criminal gang that was creating havoc in and around New Amsterdam, Corentyne and West Berbice.
The men are suspected to be involved in the A. Ally and Sons robbery which occurred on July 14, where over $3.7M  and US$2300  was taken as the business entity was about to deposit the money in a bank in New Amsterdam.
The men are also suspected to be associated with the discharging of a loaded firearm outside of a New Amsterdam night club recently.

Bandits beat Sophia man for three hours during robbery

NOVEMBER 18, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Armed bandits in the Sophia area continue their merciless rampage, this time beating self-employed farmer Deryck Halley before making off with his two Honda CG motorcycles, US and local currency among other items on Monday night.
For Halley, the ordeal, which lasted for close to three hours, will remain etched in his memory for life, especially since it was the second time in two years that he has suffered a similar fate.
And to make matters worse, the police showed up some two hours after the bandits left, with Halley claiming that he had tried to contact them at the Turkeyen and Sparendaam Police Stations as well as the Impact Headquarters at Brickdam shortly after the incident.
Recounting the ordeal yesterday, Halley who lives alone, told this newspaper that it was around 21:00 hours when he returned to his lot 14 North Sophia home and was confronted by the bandits.
β€œThe place was very dark and I did not see them coming, but after I came off my bike and was about to open the gate, one of them placed a gun to my head and told me to open the gate,” Halley said.
But the men were impatient, as one of them lashed him to the head with a gun and grabbed the keys from his hand and opened the gate himself. The bandit even opened the door of the bottom flat of Halley’s house and dragged him inside.
Once in the house, they ordered him to remain silent and then began their merciless assault.
Halley said the men demanded cash.
β€œThey want to know where the money was. β€˜Wheh de money deh?’ they keep asking. I said I don’t know where the money deh. Then they say they gon kill me,” he recalled.
The men proceeded to rummage through a backpack he had on him at the time, grabbing his several bank cards and his New York City, Virginia State and local driver’s licences, along with other documents.
Halley said the men became frustrated at not finding any cash in the bottom flat, so they tried to drag him upstairs, but he held on to a rail for dear life, despite receiving a number of blows about his body.
β€œThey keep telling me that they will kill me if they don’t get any money,” Halley recalled.
Eventually, one of the bandits went upstairs and after awhile, he came back with a bag containing valuables, all of which Halley cannot determine up to now.
The men continued to beat Halley while taking turns to go upstairs to search for more loot.
He said that eventually they found some cashβ€”US$1500 and GY$2100. They also took away his two cellular phones.
Not satisfied, the men turned their attention to Halley’s two Honda CG motorcycles.
According to the victim, the men, who had already secured the key to the bike that Halley came home with, demanded the key to the other one that was parked in the yard.
He said that after grabbing that key, the men took him outside and ordered him to start the motorcycle.
Halley said he tried to be smart by turning off the bike’s gasoline supply in an attempt to stall them, hoping that someone would realize what was happening and call the police.
But eventually the men saw through his trick and after dealing him a few more blows, they started the motorcycle themselves and made good their escape.
Halley, meanwhile, went back into his home and tried to contact the police
β€œThis thing went on till 12 o’clock. These men tie me up and although I tell them to take what they want, they kept beating me. The police was another story,” Halley lamented.
He said that the police eventually showed up at his home around 02:00 hours and took a brief statement from him.
β€œThe police have not returned to examine my house properly…all the blood still left,” he said, indicating  at his blood-stained floor.

Men allegedly busted with cocaine in hotel remanded

NOVEMBER 18, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

Two men, who were found with a quantity of cocaine-filled pellets at an Alpha International Hotel, at Ogle East Bank Demerara, were yesterday remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to a conspiracy charge.
Herbert Smith, 44, of Lot 3464 North Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown and Dwayne Adams, 35, of Lot 38 Wills Street, Golden Grove, were jointly charged with conspiring to traffic 848 grammes of cocaine. They were allegedly found with the drug on November 13, at the aforementioned hotel.
Smith and Adams were both remanded to prison by City Magistrate Judy Latchman, despite a compelling bail application made by their Attorney, Peter Hugh.
The defendants will return to court on December 7, when they will appear before the Chief Magistrate.
During the bail application, Hugh highlighted that Adams has since admitted to ownership of the narcotic, while Smith said he had nothing to do with the drug. The Attorney argued that the men are charged under the wrong section of the narcotic act. In explaining this, Hugh informed the court that his clients should have been charged for narcotic trafficking, instead of conspiracy to traffic a narcotic.
He affirmed that if Adams was charged for drug trafficking he would have pleaded guilty.
However, the lawyer’s bail application was opposed by the prosecution, led by Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru. He argued that the special reasons put forward by the Attorney were not sufficient for the court to consider bail. Mangru said that the police are in possession of a caution statement given by Adams.
Mangru pointed out that in the statement Adams admitted to having knowledge and ownership of the cocaine. The prosecutor also informed the court that Adams confessed to the police that he had swallowed 27 of the cocaine-laced pellets.
The court was told that the man was hospitalized at the Woodlands Hospital, where he excreted the pellets.
In concluding, Mangru added that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) advised that the men be charged with conspiracy to traffic the drug.
Kaieteur News had earlier reported that the two men were busted at the hotel by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit(CANU) hours before they were scheduled to board a flight destined for New York’s JFK Airport.
It was reported that when CANU swooped down on the hotel, some of the guests who had gone there for their entertainment panicked. They thought that the hotel was being attacked by bandits.

Festival City man shot dead

FESTIVAL City was plunged into mourning on Wednesday evening as a man who is described by many as a β€œloving father” was executed in cold blood by two gun-toting young men.37-year-old Christopher Wharton was sitting at home with his five-year-old son, Nashan Wharton, when two men approached his home and shouted for him.
Video footage acquired from the scene last evening show the two men approaching Wharton, and a scuffle ensuing between him and one of the gunmen.

The scuffle ended with the gunman being thrown to the yard after which he whipped out the firearm and began shooting.

The gunman fired several shots at Wharton while he was still on the steps. After Wharton fell off the stairs, the man stood over his body and continued to shoot.

From the video, it appears that Wharton was shot several times at close range.
After shooting Wharton, the gunmen then reportedly fired two more shots in the air to ward off onlookers before making their escape on a bicycle.

According to neighbours, they heard a burst of several shots after which they heard Wharton shouting for helping and saying β€œthey shoot me.”

Reports indicate that the first bout of gunfire took place sometime around 17:00hrs and the second bout was less than 30 seconds later.

Neighbours responded immediately and assisted in taking the shot man to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted.

It is understood that the two men, whose names have been given, are known to persons in the community.

Persons at the scene late last evening described Wharton as a loving father who was all for his son.

They stated that the man took custody of his son some months ago and since then has been all for his son.

According to one man, even while assistance was being rendered to Wharton, he was asking about his son and whether he was injured or not.

The 37-year-old man was then taken to the hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

SON SHOT
The drama did not end there however, as a few hours after news of the man’s death spread, his son began to complain of a pain to his leg.

Investigation by his guardians led to the boy saying that he was shot. The lad was taken to the GPHC where he was admitted and is being treated.

St. Lucian women busted with β€˜coke in poke’

Such has been the efficiency that some people are questioning the passage of hairdresser, 26-year-old Shureen Giddings on November 9, last. This woman had 105 cocaine pellets in her stomach weighing some three pounds.
Yesterday, CANU ranks busted two St Lucian women, age 38 and 44, with just over two pounds of cocaine between them.
The women were transporting the cocaine in their vaginas. The women had already checked in at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport en route to their native St. Lucia.
A source close to the bust said that the women were fingered just after CANU arrested two men in Alpha Hotel, Ogle, East Coast Demerara, with a quantity of cocaine.
They are in police custody and should be appearing in court today.
One CANU official said that his organization has the inside track on cocaine smuggling in Guyana.

The 17-year-old reportedly told police that she drank a pill to abort the fetus in August last, but she only passed the baby late last week at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The teen alleged that the hospital staff handed over the fetus to her and told her to bury it without giving her any documentation.
Police are still to check the GPHC to confirm the teenager’s story.
Meanwhile, a source from the hospital said that for the parents to be handed over an infant, it has to be fully developed.
Also, it is customary that a social worker be assigned to the case.
β€œI don’t know of anything like that… It would go through the mortuary and a social worker will have to work with the parents. There are certain paper works that has to be completed,” the source said.
The source stressed that no foetus was handed to anyone by the GPHC.
According to information received, the teenager lived with her mother at La Bonne Intention. The landlord reportedly gave the teen’s mother notice to move. When the woman refused to move from the property, the landlord moved to the courts to have her evicted.
Yesterday, this newspaper was told that when a bailiff and a police rank went to the location to ensure that the woman move from the property, neighbours informed the policeman that the teen was pregnant and they suspected that she buried the fetus in the yard since her β€œhigh” belly disappeared.

A traumatised Miriam Edwards

her home at gunpoint by a lone gunman, who escaped with a quantity of jewellery and other items.
According to information, the gunman entered the yard of Edwards’ home located at Lot 896 Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, Berbice, about 20:15h.
At that time she was sitting on the veranda and thought he was a neighbour’s grandson and as such enquired what he wanted.
The bandit reportedly gave a faint response, but soon after whipped out a gun and ordered Edwards into the house where he instructed her to stay quiet.
The gunman then demanded that she hand over all her valuables and out of fear she handed over six gold rings, a gold chain along with her mobile phone.
At the time of the robbery, two of Edwards’s children were at home, but were unaware of what was happening. The young man then left and joined an accomplice, who was waiting on a pedal cycle. The Police were called in and an investigation was launched.
Speaking with Guyana Times on Wednesday, Edwards recounted that after taking what he wanted, the gunman, who appeared to be in his teens, calmly walked out of her yard, got on his accomplice’s pedal cycle and they rode off.
It was after they left, she alerted her children about what happened and contacted the Police. She said she did not raise an alarm right away because she was fearful that the gunman might have injured her children.
The traumatised woman was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and sent away.
Edwards told this publication that the Police were quick to respond but expressed some concerns about the length of time she had to wait at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam for the report to be taken.

Not spiralling out of control
This is another robbery that came on the heels of Police refuting claims that serious crimes was not spiralling out of control.
As a matter of fact, in a release issued on Wednesday, Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Wendell Blanhum stated that based on statistics and other data, crime is not on the increase. He had stated that the serious crimes statistics indicated there was an eight per cent increase for the period January 1, 2015 to October 31, 2015, when compared to the same period in 2014; and for the same period in 2013, an increase of 0.2 per cent.
The Police stated that notwithstanding the eight per cent increase this year, there were significant efforts by law enforcement in the apprehension and prosecution of several high-profile criminal groups.
The Guyana Police Force also stated that in the recent instances when the Guyana Defence Force was called out in support of the Police, it was with the aim of giving reassurance to the members of the public and boosting their confidence, and not because the Police were overwhelmed by the crime situation.

– Screwdriver still stuck in victim’s neck – Prosecutor

A young mason was on Thursday remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman charged with attempted murder.

Akeem Dazzel, 18, of Lot 173 Campbell Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on 15 November at James Street, Albouystown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Jamal Nicholas, with intent to commit murder.

The details surrounding the charge were not revealed in Court however, Defence Attorney Clive Forde alleged that on the day in question his client was attacked by a group of young men while walking home and acted in self-defence. He stated that Dazzel was injured on multiple parts of his body during the scuffle.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostvick revealed that the VC is still hospitalized, adding that the screwdriver is still lodged in his neck.

As such bail application was denied and the teen remanded.

The case will continue on December
