There are two varieties of fish in Guyana that we call "Pakoo". One is the Pacu which looks like a big piranha and is found in the rivers in the interior. It is not carnivorous like the piranha and feeds mostly on vegetation. The other is the Pacuma, which is called Pakoo for short, and this one is mostly found on the coast at the mouth of the rivers flowing into the Atlantic. The Pacuma is a bottom feeder with a wide mouth and is probably the one that most coastal dwellers would be familiar with.

I've heard packoo used in that context too as in "ah ketch a packoo and ah gon bruk he back". Packoo in this sense would mean a person who is naive and lacking street smarts and who can easily be exploited.

Anyone got KEERAH eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

I never knew what caused wapya, it must be the diet.

I though it was improper dental hygiene.

Before going overseas, I was used to high starchy Guyanese food.

But vegetables and salads later became a large part of my diet.

When I am now in Guyana, I have difficulty handing just rice with curry meat and  no veggys.

Lettuce is difficult to find in Berbice and only tomatoes and cucumbers are readily available.

Guyana needs a national food guide and an education program against soft drinks and sweets, because diabetes  is on the rise.    

When we were kids this is a must have.

Poor diet is the cause of wapya,now we

used to eat a lot of fruits maybe not the

correct type.

You remember Scotts Emulsion that was one horrible tasting fish oil.

I remember the Emulsion.

GAINSE is food rich in flavour.
