the trick to fry the boiled eggs is to roll them lightly in flour like when frying fish. they come out nice and brown, and no hot oil pitching on you. the old ladies in guyana did it this way

Good tip!!

I never learnt to cook at home .. just made 1 roti for myself ( my sis knead flour though). I left home after high sch n was boarding n lodging in GT until i was 19 . Then my gf n i shared an apt n i learnt to cook from her ( she isnt indo) n also trued to cook based on wht i had observed my sisters n mom doing!! Lol

Food Basics carries it so does Metro depending where located. I first bought them years ago thinking they were as Lynn mentioned "anise biscuit"

I recently introduced it to a Guyanese buddy who told me that years ago (back in early 90s) a Jamacian friend told him they were no good (that banna taste box must got a hole). My buddy is now hooked on it.

It goes nice with old cheddar or dunked in coffee.

Btw..uguys know aby β€˜dwarf’ seim tree??

A friend gave me 5 seim  2 yrs ago n i set it but insects ate all but 1 of the plant.  I was shocked to see a small tree n not a vine like th usual seim.  Also the flowers were white.. n the tree bore 3 pods of seim!! @Lynn, use Dawn Detergent for the insects. Check Utube. If not, get a a bottle of Neem oil from Home Depot for about $18. For the squash, it seems to be a fungus.  Mix baking soda with milk.... you will need a good spray bottle.

I grow the Bush type Seim.  Seeds will be available for next year.

I used the blue dawn detergent in water n sprayed …but too late!

thnx fir the tip for squash ..will try it..

wehad black fungus on my rose bed  2 yrs ago..found out it was black spot fungus too late..n that needed a fungicide which we got from Cdn Tire, but it was too late.  I got nw rose plants last yr n in spring i saw signs of same fungus.  Fortunately i caught it early so hopefull i wont lost the new plants this time.

Lynn

@Lynn, get a sprayer like the HDX from Home Depot and spray the soil around the Rose bushes as well as under the leaves with the Dawn detergent mix. The fungus is in the soil. When it rains the spores get splattered up to under the leaves. Water the roots also  and feed them with Bone meal for root development. Every so often I would spray my garden by using either Dawn or Laundry detergent in a watering can.

Thnx

we did that but it didnt work..at that time i didnt know wht it was, but a friend from UK knew  abt black spot fungus (as shehad seena gardening show on TV there) n she told  me to get the fungicide.  It was extensive n killed all the roses..n yes we were told that the spores would live in the soil..so huny treated soil in spring. Yet the bottom leaves of new rose plants had a bit of black spots n yellowing of leaves, so hubby treated it again.

buti will follow it up with dawn n for sure will get spray(hubby has a good spray but im  not sure if itis HDX

Thanx a mil for the tips Mits Bhaiya.

oh the squash..thos dried leaves r from β€˜bramble’

my gf told me it is the heat that is making the vine n  leaves wither (hubby waters morn n evening)

@Lynn, because of the heat that squash needs more water. To get the squash to produce, pick one male flower and use the stamen to tickle the other flowers. This will trick the vine to feel as if the bees are around. Do not wet the leaves as this help the spores of the fungus to take over. Build up the soil around the root to form like a mini pond to retain the water.  My Guyanese neighbor grows it on his cherry tree and the fruit is about 9 to 10 feet . Love it with black tiger shrimp and fried Banga Mary on the side.

well i am a farmer’s  daughter but i never knew abt manual pollination.  So all d squash were turning yellow n  they dried up.  Then a cuz came late aug n told me  that i have to β€˜marry’ the male n female flowers.  I had no idea abt man n woman flowers..omg! ..but-by then it  was late summer so i didnt get any squash that yrs.

last yr we were doing the β€˜marry’ or β€˜kiss; thing as people suggested..then a gf f mine told me  to try the qtips because sometimes u dont get enough male flowers to pollinate the female

btw me guh ga  fuh ask me hubby dat qwestion

That is nothing compared to a mother drinking 2  bit stoute oer day..n eso newborn , boy that is alot of likka in d breast milk!!

Time to join this cooking thread.......been away for a while, busy with summer and the 5 grandbabas.

Pouring rain right now.......we really need it, especially the farmers!

My veggie garden is a total failure this year.....not sure why .  Used cow and sheep manure, watered regularly, pulled weeds.......and nothing!!

I usually get zucchini and tomatoes galore! even my herbs are stunted

For today's dinner......roti with dhaal and stewed salmon (from can)

I bake a really good carrot cake.....have leftovers and will finish off after dinner with cream cheese icing!

Try cutting back to 6ft. It will spring back  8 to 10 ft. Also use 10-10-10 fertilizer at about 2 ft radius from the trunk with a pinch of bone meal.

Good advice there Mits! I used to put the fertilizer/bone meal where the branches end also. If the branches stuck out six feet from the trunk that's where it was placed.

I think the nails in the trunk scenario was a bit much, but when a tree or plant seem to not do good, I would take my fork and stick it into the ground around the plant to break up the roots a bit, that shocks the plant.

So you see Mits, you might not only get peach from the apple tree, if lucky you might even get grapefruit.

Talking abt nails in tree trunk..

i remember my dad doing this at home but I am not sure which tree n for wht reason..

somehow im thinking it's the coconut tree …n maybe whn the coconuts were falling whn they were too young..???

I must ask my brothers…

(my parents were farmers..buti was too young to learn all abt agriculture from them..ie ask questions etc.  My bro who died last OCT knew a lot as he planted lot of fruits n veggies like my parents did, so i started to ask him a few questions last yr…(hope my other brothers, who r not into farming now, can shed some light )

I made a powder from dried habanero. I sprinkled on the baigan and at the base of the baigan plants. I sprinkled some at the top of the fence. This works for me.

In the evening, I water the seim with Dawn + veg oil and spray under the leaves. My Ochro  was not growing. So I moved them and watering them with lemon water since they need acid and I can see some progress.

With Karela, pick one flower and go around and touch the other flowers. This will trick the plant into producing fruits. Remember to pollinate the ones with baby Karelas.

With the plum tomatoes, cut pieces of cardboard and place them under the fruits so that they don't touch the soil. Feed them with egg shells or mix "tums" in water and give them a drink. The calcium will prevent the fruit from rotting at the bottom.

Poi will love the shade.
