All of us went to school…

Don’t matter if is lil or big ABC ( where’s Terry?)

personally, no matter if u made it to phd or std 4….all that matters  is that u share some experiences whether be good, bad, ugly, funny, sad….ridiculous etc etc!

Let me start!

This memory was refreshed by a few classmates not too long ago

and it was primary school😁 I start to smile as I recall it

so there was a big wedding at my neighbours and almost all the people form my little village was there ( well most of us were related) and of course the kids are all there.

The following week all of us had wedding ceremonies under the school house ( school was on posts about 4 ft high ( guessing for flood days)

So technically I have been married lots of times because after few days we had other weddings with other classmates ( what is it called when u switch partners?)  The girls ‘borrowed’ our moms’ white lace half slip and tied it up with strings to make wedding dresses, we made flower bouquet and even headwear with grass. When the senior mistress son ( who was ‘married’) go and tell his mom we all got called up. She was very nice( she taught my mom in std one and 18yrs later she taught me in std one, then I became her pupil teacher after high school…She was the most inspirational person in my life ( apart from my nana) To this day her son and I are friends as is the girl he ‘married’ and she is 92 and still say I am one of her daughters….

more to come…some wild and wicked 😉😁

bring on your stories…

For those of you that know Stewartville Sec. School you will know that the school shared the yard with a Church and a graveyard.

Whenever it was too noisy in the school the teacher will take us out in the yard and we will listen to the lectures there. (Mostly English Literature and History) the tombstones was our bench and we will sit down on them .

It was nice and very calm outside.

For hide and seek days that was the perfect place for us to play. One time a grave had fallen apart and someone dared me to crawl inside. And I crawled in, there was some kind of flooring inside I remembered so there was no fear of falling down 6 feet.

Pagwah time was great cause we use to get a lil feel of them gyal bubbie when we rub powder down them neck

And there was Leonora govt school, 2 teachers Hera and Peppie were lovers and use to fool around in the library we use to spy on them too.

After exams was done of the term it was cards and dominoes time in the class, even the teachers will join in and play with us. Those who had BF or GF will find some secret corner for themselves.

More to follow later

anyone  ever travelled in wooden buses or train to go to school??
i did.. WildFlower girl.. temind me of the names.. I rem  Judge which did Vergenoegen to V/H but I think there was another short-drop 1. ?
Elizabeth? Or Queen Elizabeth?  ??The express from Parika to VH

?Lady Macbeth??

Later I ferried then then took the  train, then a long  walk on long  muddy dam ( train platform was practically in canefields)

Train was scrapped mid 1974

n then the ‘adventures’ came to an end.. Tata bus was introduced. Bus was ‘jam-packed’ no fun!

Chami omg.. all of a sudden i have this memory.. dud u not break 1 of yr long long finger nails in the bus??
btw were u ever sent to rip the hem of yr ‘short’ skirt in the ladies toilet, after being equipped with a needle n thread by Mrs G (the sewing :needlework) teacher?    Btw (I have her on fb n she looks the same.. same size n hairdo)

ps my skirt/uniform hem was never more than 3 ins above knees.. Mon morns after assembly, there she stood with ruler in hand to measure just case she wasnt sure ! Mine was probably an inch above my knees!!

Oh Chami..were u 1 of the young ladies that eventually made very long skirts but used  to roll up the waist to make mini nn only let it down whn u  entered  the sch yard ?? Lol

btw..do u remember  the gifts we recvd for winning our relays (after a while they have certificates..which  i never saved!! (They were left in my books in the bookcase in my mom’s home ..my mom lent my books (unknowingly to me) to cuz n they never  returned then .  Whn i finally went to collect after I got married..the bookpress was bare!! No sch reports..no athletic certificates ..n my ‘treasured Modern Maths texts..books 1-8, my Bio texts ..all gone n my mom couldnt rem who borrowed wht)

anyway..back to the gifts..the 1st relay our team got a lil blue leatherette change purse..(i have a similar 1 , I am not sure if I saw it n bought it or if someone gave it to me..will post the pix later)

then we got a bright yellow water bottle..it had the straps to hang on shoulder or across yr body. I rem getting a glass butter dish for 2nd place in long jumps..

I wasnt much of a sprinter but they needed me for the relay team..poor D house! They called is D for DEAD house!

I always got 2nd for high n long jumps..(Mr H who was our house master was very ‘smart’. He put Deb D for the open high jump  , if not we would have got 2nd n 3rd as she never beat Claudie . This was she got 1st in open n I got 2nd in my age grp.  Debs always bagged the 1st place for the long jumps n I came in 2nd !!

I think I stopped participating in the relay after that ‘fall’ because I felt that we were cheated.  You were so far ahead n u fainted just before the ribbon!! Lol..

I LOVED SPORTS DAYS!

Enough for now..tbc

Lynn

Oh yeahh..that is why i was mad that they didnt give us the 1st..u were clearly the winner n the reason u lost was medical..plus u were almost at the ribbon..

Lynn

I remember high school but primary school is still on me mind….

so we all decided who were goin to marry in std 2! This one bie ( still my friend) we were going to do nikah but then the other boy who was my neighbour decided that he will marry me and take me to India ( his nana was from India  and that’s the only person I knew who lived near us and was from India ) ….ok all the marriage story dun

Rounders and  cricket was big in the ball field which had lots of holes from the cows walking through during wet season

sometimes the ball used to get lost in a cow foot hole

i remember a group of us making lead marble by putting pcs of lead in a sardine ‘punt’, placing it over one of the cow foot holes then lighting a small fire under….that was small daaayzzz

i remember getting soaked in rain and that same senior mistress made us take off our uniform and she made newspaper wraps for us ( that’s how she saw the welts on my back) and took me under her wing…like an angel (God bless her)

………

hey Jane girl, when u are 5ft 8 inches tall with long legs, all the skirts were short. That was my excuse and I stuck to it…and got away with it too..I made sure that there was no hem! Also, do u remember those nice leather slippers at Bata shoe store? Well I got a new pair, put a plaster pun me toe and got away with wearing it at school

i was not Mrs G fav for sure caz I was too rebellious.

omg, yes indeed, I did break my one inch long nail. One time Mr. Gobin stopped by my home to see my dad ( they were related) and he asked my mom why she don’t put me to scrub the pots…he was shocked to find out that I did cook and wash black pot with those nails. I had a system to clean right after with lime and old toothbrush

more to come

as I said, the good, the bad and some ugly😄😄😁

Lol

Chams I used to be 5’3.5 “gal!!

Now I am 5’ 2.5 “ lol

That  nail story was narrated in this house Not so long ago (maybe twice) Rach had gel nails n broke twice n it bled too.. I remembered your calamity.

Those Tata buses used to propel us forward whn the driver hit brakes.  You were standing n grabbed on to the tail on top of the seat but somehow u managed  to break. You winced n then i saw the blood n the  nail still ‘hanging on” .

Rach cried whn hers broke n i told her abt that incident !!

Cain!

i never skulked !

Chams .. those girls used to lime during exams time as we used to get 1/2 day  off

I used to continue in train to Leonora station where my gf came to ‘collect” me. Or i caught car to CI or Anna Catherina . This was whn we had AM off so then we  took hire  car to sch for aft session

Whn  we had PM off.. we strayed  after morning session

a few times we stopped off at Tuschen station n visited Ms Claude .. she had gigantic mango n genip trees in her yard n we feasted on the fruits.. they had lovely sand mangoes

Lynn

The first time someone bring in a skin flick magazine in school. It was actually the first time many of us saw a true picture of "something" lol. The magazine did get confiscated before the day was over though and no one took ownership of the deed. I must have been about 10 or 11 years old I think. Can't quite remember Definitely was too young for any sort of uplifting experience I know for sure lol.

Yes bossman, ( ya rass not boss a dis house no mo😄)….yes to salt n pepper with green/half ripe mangoes. My bestest friend 😔had mango trees and she could climb so she was responsible for mangoes.

also, I used to take roti ‘wrap’ for lunch…sometimes fry bigan or pumpkin etc in it….try buying that now!
jeez I am drooling. I have not had gooseberry in looooong time

There was a banna who used to always come up to me every dam day with "stings" meaning he wanted some of what I had. I got so fed up with the constant "stings" so one day I took in a good serving of tambrin syrup (tamarind) with nuff nuff epson salts sprinkled in it. leh me tell you yeh, when ma boy jumped up to "stings" me, I gave him the whole thing.

Early afternoon class we hear ..Pffft...Pffft..Brat atat atat...then it got much louder as salts kicked in.

FRAAAP.. POOT, BLAT, BRAAAP, BRAAAACK, FRRRT, BLAAARP, PBBBBT..a bit later the banna jump up and tek off for de latrine. He rass never "stings" Iman again.

Funny part is, he was my best fren so just imagine if I din like 'im.

Many days I had the roti wrap..but with fry eggs .  We had fireside only n my sis had to wake at 5 am to cook 2 roti for me with d ‘curry’ but sometimes d ‘curry’ (fry baigan or bora etc  ) didnt finish in time so she fry up egg.  She wrapped 2 sep roti because I never ate BFast..too early to eat food but my dad milked the cow at that hr (using a lantern , as it was still dark outside).  My sis quickly boiled a 1cup so that i got milk with milo or ovaltaine to drink before i left home.  Whn i got to sch, I ate my bfast but the hot roti used to ‘sweat’ in the plastic bag n become soggy.  But whn yuh belly hungry, u eat anything..we nah mek styles..food was food back then.  My gfs used to have ‘pocket piece’ ( I didn't have a cent ) n they bought the goodies from Mr Gulchrn mom..eddo/cassava balls , boil n fry channa.  They went to her home as it was quite early..i think we arrived at sch before 8 am. (the boat departed  at 6 am..i left home at 530 am n didnt get home until after 630 pm..sometimes even 7 pm whn the last train was delayed or whn Malali got stuck on a sandbank..)

FUN days!!

Anybody rem the slate?

I used it  in  lil n big ABC.

once   pulled out 1 side  the frame n hit a bully with the edge of the slate..hahaha

teacha complained to my parents..but hear  story nah!!

iS me  daddy bin tell me to do that..( not really, he told me a story..hehehe)

this guy used to push n shove  me in the line ...always  bullying me sometimes he pushed me so hard whn we  lining up, i would fall down..

rem how we had to line up whn sch bell ring? Well dis lilpickeny used to stand in line  to get fuss in line so that i would get to earse the blackboard..whn u first in line teacher gave u favor!!

so dis  guy used to run n play n then try to butt in d line..

so i complained to my  daddy n he told me a story abt someone being bullied n how he hit with slate n the bullying stopped

he had  no idea i would have done that..

whn teacher carried complain..my dad was shocked..but-he didnt scold me..all he said..u didn't have to hit him so hard!!

So d bottom line is me  daddy mek me do dat!! Me innocent!

lol

There was another type of "slate" I remember using, it was a dark material and almost like hard cardboard.

Re: the regular slate. i broke my lil lil pencil one afternoon and instead of mentioning it, I borrowed a bobby pin and wrote with that. Well, that was the end of my slate, I couldn't erase.

I was on the boys cricket team too..best fielder  / catcher as i was lightening fast on the field..used to run n dive for the ball.  I did same for rounders..used to jump high n catch the ball..it stuck to my long fingers ..as long as a ball touched my hand..it never fell out.

I never played marbles, but hop-scotch! N something  named TAGA because i had good aim /'straight”  hand as they called it

At home I played cricket with m bros n their friends in our backyard as they had made a pitch there..all 4 ofmy bros played cricket, ! Owned n camptain a team. i had a straight hand..ie pelt th ball straight to wicket so i helped to run out plenty guys..we played with cork ball at home..also i was a good runner so i matched the guys running in between the wickets so that  they made runs rather than hinder them.

I remember playing bun-house.  Some girls used to ‘lash u hand so hard’ but for-me it was a give away..i knew who used to do that..lol

Going back to CHOOR..or SALT..the grass was weeded to  make permanent DARRS (lines) in the school yard. I always ‘kept’ the line near to salt as i was swift so no matter wht..i caught them running our of ‘salt’ !Ar home we played choor on moonlight nights with neighbours..we had sand yard so we used to wet it to form the DARRS

Janey, you lucky girl…lots of fun time with all your siblings and neighbours. When I was young I lived in a village (GP) where most of the people were my relatives ( since my great grand nana owned the village before the govt bought it, he had lots for all his sons) I had lots fun there. Then when I was nine we moved far away…yep the next Village over and I really didn’t have friends there easily

Well, of course u cant spill d beans…but u can share a bit..like hw old..how u  went abt doing it..n ifu rem wht u wrote..also how d girls reacted?

i mentioned before that i was scared to gyaff with boys in case news’ went back to my bro..

also , I was a lil ‘ugly duckling’ beside 2 of my gorgeous classmates..so dem bais never  ‘trouble’ me ..it was like i was invisible ( well apart from my athletic ability.

But i did get love letters from 1 guy..long long letters..hahah

will share later ..ie without revealing identity or too much details.  I will say how it happened..how i handled it etc..

Lynn

True true story .. how life throws unexpected curves at times !
Glad U reconnected though !

Whn I was at UG a junior guy used to gyaff with me n ask abt the courses I had completed, borrowed notes etc . I had no idea he was interested ( naive 18 yr old) as he just talked abt studies n folks that i knew from his high sch n became good friends. My sis was very ill in hospital n i used to b so sad after visiting her n he used to listen to me as I needed to talk to someone.

but after being good friends for a yr , i found out that he had told everyone that he was in love with me n people assumed we were a pair as they saw us chatting ! i was mad like hell  (young gal) that he gave people  that impression n i stopped talking to him . After a while he started to chat up a sch kid n they eventually got married.

Few yrs later We became friends (platonic) again n to this day we r good friends! Very decent guy, family man !
He came with his wife n 2 kids to visit us here as he knew my hubby before i got married .
i liked him as a friend.. nothing more !

Lynn

Oh.. the love letter I got!!

No boys ever paid attention to me.. haha.  My 2 classmates (gf) were gorgeous n they had all the admirers. But then this guy in my 5th form asked me to borrow my Bio notes (I had 2 textbooks so i combined wht was taught in class n my texts so I had a lot more info) . Remember  we used to paper our exercise books  with brown paper? So this guy returned  my notes  ( it was 2 exercise books in 1 ..) n hid a letter inside the cover but i didnt realize until I was using my notes later n felt the ‘bump’ in the cover!

So I was staying at a friend’s sister’s during the last 6 months of high sch n my gf used to come by after  dinner to study with me. I showed her the letter as i was scared to open it! She read it n approached the guy(they were friends) n scolded , saying  that i was quiet n had no interest in boyfriends etc n that i was focused only on studies!!

Well, she told me the guy was serious n madly in love n he assured her that he respected me n wont fool around etc. So she felt sorry for him as he said he was having problem studying So my gf replied to the letter n said that im only interested in books n signed my name n put it in the bio notebook n gave it to this guy. He replied that  he was willing to wait but if we can just b friends . Then  he wrote a letter everyday n gave to my gf ..nothing romantic, just everyday  stuff like wht he did after sch n if he dreamt of me .. but he signed ‘Love you’ . My gf kept replying in similar manner n after a while, i took over. I used to go in the toilet (latrine) to read though because The letters  were so long (we never gyaffed  in school but he used to helpme with Mechanics(Physics) n my gf sat in the middle of the bench
Well 1 day during mock exams  , i went back to sch early after lunch break n saw him cozy with 2 girls who were not speaking to me ( 1 was his ex ) . I sat alone ,  waiting for him to join me before exam began n he didnt. I stopped talking to him n focused on exams . During  the summer  holidays we all had to get a vaccine at the  cottage  hosp in yr (amral) area n he tried to talk with me but i walked away.

2 yrs later I ‘ran into him ‘ at UG n i just said Hi. 1 yr after i grad n was wrking at PHG he was getting a medical for a scholarship in UK  He saw me in the compound n proposed to me but he needed an answer in 1 day’s time as he was leaving  country a few days later.  He said he was going to wait outside the hosp at 4 pm the following  day n  guess wht? I left the compound before 4 pm..

He never forgave me !
Years later On  an Old yrs night at Pegasus .. he was there with a girl kept staring at me n my hubby! Hubby noticed n told me that there is a guy who was looking at me all night !

PS.. those letters were long .. he used the LONG writing paper n wrote on both sides 6-8 pages .. his handwriting was so neat !
once he said he called out my name in his dream n his mom heard n asked “who is J.. ?

well, life is short! We were kids! I would love to say thanks for helping me with Physics esp since I got a B(O’Levels) even though I didn't own  the textbook.  He was doing Add Maths so he had a good understanding of “Mechanics” in Physics

ps i got another love letter from another classmate but it was after I left HS.. oh boy! I rrad 1 st paragraph n it was corny like a Mills n Boon book n i tore it n threw in garbage. I hated this guy.. because he harassed n disrespected me !!

In high sch I started with Enid Blyton (Famous Five), Secret 7, Agatha Christi, Nancy Drew, Hardly boys , Perry Mason , Alistair McLean

At UG i read a lot of Danielle Steele , Robert Ludlum etc

My gf/batchmate/co-worker loved Lobsang Rampa so I read those .

In high school there was a little group,  mostly 3 of us and sometimes there was a fourth who was a cousin to one of the other 2.
man we did some crazy stuff

one time we ended up with ONE cigarette and the 4 of us took turns taking drags…I think that was the craziest thing I ever did in HS…. For the rest of that day and many days ahead I kept on worrying about how (what way) my mom might end my life…I knew she would’ve taken me out of school if she had found out and I was sure the beating would’ve left more scars

of course yrs later when they came to Canada, I told my dad!

bad gyal ta rass😁 and gawdam don’t care anymore 🥃

Lil abc story..

so whn i started primary sch, almost all f the classes had 2 teachers. My mom n the senior tr for lil ABC were friends so she knew me before I started sch.. Not so long after I started sch, the HM left n Ms B became acting HM n then retired. They planned a farewell event. Since I was her fave kid, her assistant (who was left alone to teach lil ABC) picked me to do poem on stage (10 little fingers..).  Well Fri aft used to be play time so there i was running n playing ..hair all messed up n I went up on the stage n did wht i had to do.  The kids were all laughing as i was all ruffled up..

my big sis who used to look after me ..ie dress me n comb hair etc was livid because she was embarrassed ..i was untidy!! She took pride in seeing that we were all neat n tidy n presentable for sch..n there i was onstage..

she scolded be badly after sch..asking why i didnt tell her that iw as picked to go on stage..then she would have combed back my hair after lunch n change my white shirt ..in other words ‘clean me up’

Lynn

Another incident from primary sch..accident!! Talk abt calamity jane eh!

so we were practising on the road..sand n brick as we didnt have ‘paved’ or ‘pitch’ roads..just as i was approaching the finish line..this girl didnt wantme to win so she ‘cut across infront of me’ n i ‘pitched’ fwd with great speed..got a lot of bruises but 1 of my kneecap slipped!! PAIN..PAIN galore..i bawled n a teacher came n  ‘fixed’ it

i had to go to the local masseuse to get massage for a wk..i stopped running races after that!!

Lynn

In high sch..form 2, my knee cap slipped out again..this time i was doing long jump n i couldnt move the legn started to cry. Everyone thought i was crying because i wasnt  satisfied with my jump but whn they saw that i wasnt moving they became concerned n Ms J came n hugged me called a male teacher to lift me  out of sand pit n they ‘fixed’ back the knee cap!! I came in 2nd ..luckily it was my 3rd n final jump.. I was teased abt this for a long time..ie because i cried !!..yeah..CRYBABY!!

Lynn

How I got into athletics in high sch..sheer accident!!

During recess times, some of the girls used to tie the gold cords that we wore to form a rope n we would just do high jumps..well yrs truly with her skinny self n LONG legs was clearing all the heights.  2 4th formers were looking out the windows from upstairs( Cham..a girl names shobha n her friend..i dont rem her name but they were bff’s) walked down to the yard n pulled me aside, asked which house i was in n whn i said D..they were so excited, they literally dragged me to meet me Hanf, who was D house-master! So Mr H then tested me for long jumps n sprint..  i wasnt  that fast of a runner but i was chosen for the relay n i did good for the long jump! BTW Chams, after u fell, I stopped the participating in the  relay ! I stuck to the high n long jumps n came in 2nd after Ms Claudette ..Debbie was put in the open category n got 1st ..that way we ended up with 1st n 2nd for both jumps..rather than getting 2nd n 3rd .  Mr H was very wise ,as Deb couldnt beat claudette.

poor D house..they called us DEAD house..we never  got more than 20 points ..C n B houses were more than 50 points . F. Nedd was our best athlete..rem him Chams..n debs of course

sports day was the best ever..do u rem once it was healt at Uitvlugt community centre n it rained badly that day..we waited until after lunch n the teachers decided that were were going to let us run in the rain n mud?? Omg i had to borrow my friend’s clothes to go home as mine was all mud!! But it was fun..it was hard to run in the rain ..lots of falls/slides

That’s a lot of jumps girlie. My last jump was at West Dem Sch representing Zgss….as I recall, I “flew” to the end of the sand pit then fell backward…I remember running at that sch too but don’t remember if you were there.

There are three couples in Toronto who I used to see occasionally….former Prez brother and his beautiful wife who had the longest hair in high sch…former poster on GNI sister and her hubby and hass and his wife ( who live few blocks from me) these couples were all in higher class than us.
Pi don’t recall Jaip nor mis relationships…maybe after I taken out of sch in form 5…. ( luckily I had help from teachers n students to study for exams)

Primary sch I didn’t like any milk except straight from cow teat and into my cup…this my nana got me do while he milked the cows…I also loved to mix the thick milk cream with sugar and eat it….mmmm sometimes I put two cups of milk in a pot and boil it on slow heat just to get the cream and when it boils down I scrape the red milk off and enjoy with roti.

I love milk powder…shhh I used to get dry powder milk in a pc newspaper to eat compliments of my teacher who later I later  became pupil teacher for. I didn’t like the arrowroot biscuits …well food was not my thing as a child ( I am making up for it 😄)
