Cane Grove man beaten to death

– villagers say attackers known

By Derwayne Wills
A YOUNG Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara father of one died yesterday morning as a result of injuries he sustained in a New Year’s Day altercation in which he was allegedly attacked by a group of five men in his community.

Twenty-two-year-old Deokumar Basdeo died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), but the police are currently investigating the incident, which occurred at about 21:30 hrs on New Year’s Day, one day after Basdeo had celebrated his 22nd birthday.

Basdeo’s wife, Sherry, told this newspaper that she was at her mother’s residence on the night of the incident when she received a call that her husband was badly beaten, and that he was unconscious and bleeding on the side of a roadway just around the corner from her in-laws.

On her way to the hospital yesterday morning, she received a call at about 08:30 hrs, informing her that her husband had died as a result of his injuries.

The family reminisced that the deceased had been a peaceful man who would not make trouble with anyone. They could not relate the source of the altercation between the deceased and his attackers.
They believe that the altercation was captured by a surveillance camera attached to the home of a wealthy community member for whom Basdeo worked up until his demise.

The family confirmed police investigators sought the surveillance footage from the residence, but were informed by the man’s son that the cameras were turned off at the time of the incident.

The dead man’s wife said she believes her husband was also run over by a motor vehicle after he had been beaten. The attackers were no strangers to the community. One resident confirmed that one of the attackers would frequent his mother’s home, located opposite the dead man’s family’s home. That man, believed to be from Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was not named.

That information was related to the police and two men are consequently believed to be in police custody, according to residents, although a police press release indicated that no arrests had been made up to press time.

One eyewitness who claimed to have seen the entire incident said they heard a loud noise at the corner that sounded like someone had been knocked down. Upon visiting the scene, the five men were seen beating the now-dead man as he begged for his life.

Deokumar’s father, 43-year-old Kevin Basdeo, is calling for justice in the matter. The deceased man leaves to mourn his wife, extended family, and a one-year-old son.

A Corentyne resident was questionably the country’s first reported murder victim. He was killed just ten minutes into the New Year.
The celebrations were just beginning to soak in when it was reported that one man was stabbed to death following an altercation with one of his drinking partners.    Dead is Asif Hafeez, 24, a labourer of Lot 72 Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
The situation started from a misunderstanding between the couple who lived in the upper flat of a two-storey apartment.
The alleged killer, a relative of the dead man’s wife, lived in the lower flat.
According to information, Hafeez and his wife had just returned from an Old Year’s Night party next door when an argument erupted between them.

It is alleged that the woman’s relative downstairs got involved and Hafeez reportedly promptly told him to “mind his own business”.
This infuriated the situation and the two men became involved in an argument.  Hafeez reportedly went downstairs and an altercation began during which he was stabbed in the neck by the other man who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The injured man was picked up and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. After committing the act the perpetrator walked out of the yard and has not been seen since. Investigations are ongoing.

BURNT TO DEATH – bandits rob, torture hapless victims

POLICE are investigating an incident in which a West Berbice mother of two was burnt to death in her home in a fire set by bandits in the aftermath of a home invasion and robbery early yesterday morning. The dead woman has been identified as Anita Baichan, 49, a cash-crop farmer of Plantation Hope, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.

After the robbery and the setting of the house on fire, Baichan tried to escape from the building, but could not because she had been gagged and bound hand and foot with duct tape by the two bandits during the robbery.

Her son Moshin Khan, 23, was also beaten and terrorised by the bandits for over two and a half hours. He, too, was gagged and duct-taped, but somehow managed to escape the raging inferno that engulfed the house.

But by the time he had freed himself and rushed to save his mother, it was too late.

Neighbours said Baichan was a quiet and cheerful person.
She was the mother of two children: Moshin, a carpenter, and a daughter whose name was given as “Natasha,” who is currently overseas.

The robbery and subsequent arson and murder occurred between 02:00 hrs and 04:30 hrs yesterday.
According to Khan, he and his mother, the only occupants at home at the time, were awakened by the two armed men who gained entry into their house. The two men, one armed with a cutlass and the other with two knives, tied and gagged them both before demanding money.

They handed over $250,000 and some silver jewellery, but the robbers were unsatisfied and demanded more.

“They keep searching the house and then coming back and beat us, then they went searching the house again.”

The bandits “broadsided” Khan and his mother with a cutlass.

After the long torture, one of the bandits told them that they were leaving, but will burn the house down with them inside. The bandits, Khan said, then proceeded to the lower flat of the building, poured kerosene on the floor, and set the building alight.

The young man related that all he and his mother could have done was crawl on their bellies as they tried to get downstairs. During the crawling, he fell down the stairs, leaving her behind.

After a desperate effort, he managed to free himself, but by this time the house was engulfed in flames, making it impossible for him to return to rescue his mother.

Baichan’s remains were found after the fire had subsided, and the remains were taken to the mortuary for a post-mortem.

Khan was expected to be discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon after receiving treatment for the blows inflicted on him.

The police are investigating the matter, but up to late last night, no suspect had been held.

Three juveniles have been remanded for breaking and entering a New Amsterdam home and stealing a quantity of foreign liquor.

The trio of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, along with an adult are accused of breaking into the home Devon Campbell of Lot 47 Stanleytown, NA, between December 26 and 27 and stealing three bottles of rum, one pair of slippers, and one bottle perfume all being the property of Campbell and all totalling $213,000.

The juveniles along with Jim Shultz, 29, of Lot 46 Stanleytown, were refused bail when they appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

Ex-murder accused killed

A BELVEDERE, Corentyne businessman was gunned down late Wednesday evening at his home in what is believed to be a hit.Dead is 42-year-old Patrick Mohabir of Lot 9 Belvedere Village, Corentyne, who operates a supermarket at the bottom flat of his premises. He succumbed to his injuries at the Anamayah Memorial Hospital at Belvedere, Corentyne.
The man’s distraught wife, Shabeena Ahamad, told the Guyana Chronicle, she believes that her husband was the target, since his assailants entered and fired a single shot in his direction, which caught him in the left foot, and also inflicted a chop to his shoulder.
They then left immediately, after taking with them two cellular phones that were being charged in the bedroom.

Ahamad said she offered the men money and anything they needed so that they would not hurt her family, but during the five-minute ordeal, the men said nothing. At the time of the incident, the couple was at home with four of their six children.
Mohabir’s wife said the men were slimly built, masked, and armed with a gun and cutlass. They gained access into the house through a window on the right side of the building, but escaped through the back door.
She said that after securing their business, they retired upstairs for the night around 23:30 hrs. She was awakened by her husband, who asked her to check on the children in the living room as he thought they were still up and playing. “I got up to check what the noise was about,” Ahamad said, “but as soon as I open the bedroom door, two men were standing in front of me.”
She said she pleaded with them to take whatever they wanted and offered them money. At that point, her husband also got up, Ahamad said, after realising what was happening.
It was while struggling with the man with the gun that he was shot, while the one with the cutlass dealt him a chop to his body.
Ahamad said that while the men were on their way out, she managed to pull the mask off one of them, but he bent his head and quickly escaped through the back door. She immediately called the police, who arrived promptly, but the men had already made their escape.
When this publication arrived at the scene, family, friends and customers were gathered at the home of the businessman and his family to express their sympathy, while others were assisting to clean the blood-stained bedroom and blood trail from the bedroom to the entrance of the front gate in the lower flat. Many expressed shock and disbelief over the tragic incident.
Ahamad described her husband as a “caring father” who had no issues with anyone. She said they have been operating the business, Shabeena and Sons Supermarket, for over three years.
Meanwhile, Mohabir and several others had been charged and remanded to prison over the murder of an ex-police officer. This publication was told that Mohabir was committed in the Magistrate’s Court and was on remand for close to five years, but he was later acquitted of the charge. The police are investigating Wednesday night’s killing.

prime suspect in the brutal killing of a Corentyne businessman, who was shot and hacked to death in his home at around 23.30 hrs on Wednesday.
Police say Patrick Mohabir, 42, of Lot 9 Belvedere Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, was attacked in his home by two men who were armed with a gun and a cutlass.
According to a police statement, the men also held up his wife Shabina Ahmad, 39.
“During the incident Patrick Mohabir put up a resistance and was shot and chopped by the perpetrators who escaped with two cell phones and a pair of shoes.
Mohabir succumbed at the Anamyah Memorial Hospital.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed that investigators are trying to locate Neshan Jagmohan, who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison  last December while in solitary confinement.
Jagmohan was committed to stand trial for the October 7, 2013 murder of businessman Devindra Deodat at Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne.
Deodat, the owner of Cool Runnings Trucking Service, was shot and chopped to death by masked men who had stormed his grocery.
The bandits also chopped Deodat’s wife in the head and shot her father, Rafeek Abdul, in the left arm.
Blanhum also disclosed that they were seeking another suspect, but declined to identify the individual or say why investigators had connected Neshan Jagmohan to Wednesday’s killing.
Kaieteur News was told that at around 23:30 hrs on Wednesday, two masked men – one armed with a long gun and another with a cutlass, both dressed in dark long-sleeved clothing entered the Mohabir’s home.

The premises in which the attack occurred.

The premises in which the attack occurred.

Mohabir, a father of six, operates a popular grocery – Shabina and Sons Supermarket – on the premises.
At the time of the invasion, Mohabir, his wife, Shabina and four of their children, were at home. The two older children live overseas.
According to Shabina Ahmad, she and her husband were in their room when her husband heard some strange sounds emanating from outside. She said that they thought it was their children and he asked her to investigate, while he retired to bed.  Upon venturing out of the room, the woman was confronted by two masked men.
She said that she immediately begged the intruders not to harm her.  She said she told the armed men to take whatever they wanted.
However the men did not seem interested in her offers.
Upon hearing the talking, the woman’s husband immediately got up from his bed, but was confronted by one of the bandits. A scuffle ensued and he was shot in his left thigh and chopped by one of the perpetrators. The shot, which was fired at close range, shattered his left leg.
The bandits then returned to the woman.
She “scrambled” with one of them pulling off his mask in the process. However she was not able to see his face “because he duck…” The invaders then quickly exited the house, taking with them two cell phones and a pair

of shoes.
Patrick Mohabir was left in the bedroom where he bled profusely.  He was rushed to the nearby Anamayah Memorial Hospital, some four buildings away, where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.
“I don’t think it was a robbery, ‘cause they didn’t ask for anything,” the man’s wife reflected.
It was not clear how the men gained entry into the house, as there were no signs of forced entry or breakage. The woman stated that the invasion lasted about five minutes. Her four children slept through the ordeal and she woke them after the bandits left. The thieves escaped through a back door.
Mohabir, who once worked as a body guard, had been fingered in many misdemeanours in the past.  In 1998, he and two others were charged with murdering Detective police officer Raybourn Quinn. The detective was brutally chopped to death on the Whim Public Road while on his way to the Whim Police Station to make a report about cattle rustling. The matter was dismissed in the High Court a few years later.

Army admits involvement in surveillance activity

Pyle was “legitimately” supporting SOCU – GDF

Robert Pyle

Robert Pyle

BY MICHAEL YOUNGE

The Government of Guyana and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Tuesday attempted explain their involvement in what appears to be a very quasi-political operation, aimed at targeting the Head of the National Industrial and Commercial Limited (NICIL) Winston Brassington under the guise of carrying out a Police investigation, following the completion of a forensic audit at the entity.
The Defence Force was forced to admit that one of its Sergeants, Robert Pyle, was deployed to be part of a “legitimate” operation in support of the Special Organised Crime Fighting Unit (SOCU).
Plye and his wife died on December 30 while chasing a vehicle which they believed had links to Brassington.
The vehicle was being driven by a young man who was not related to Brassington. His sister was an occupant in the car. It was reportedly seen in the vicinity of Brassington’s Kingston, Georgetown home on the night Plye and special ranks were staking out the property.
After failing to block the vehicle from taking off, Plye and other special ranks in a second vehicle tailed it all

the way to Carifesta Avenue where another attempt was made to block it from proceeding further.
But this time, one of the two vehicles giving chase slammed into a vehicle which was being driven by civilian Linden Eastman. He subsequently died on the spot as a result of the impact, according to reports.
In a very brief statement to the media, the GDF, finally breaking its silence following public outrage and mounting criticisms, claimed that there was nothing sinister about its involvement in the probe being conducted by SOCU.
It argued that it was “normal” for the Defence Force to offer support to other law enforcement bodies on operations of a similar nature.
The GDF then alleged that Plye who was a member of its Special Intelligence Unit was working as part of Operation Dragnet which was an initiative announced last year by Government to tackle the out-of-control crime situation in the country.
The GDF’s release did not clarify who made the request for assistance and whether other ranks were also deployed officially to be part of the SOCU role.
When contacted, GDF Chief-of-Staff Mark Phillips remained tight-lipped and refused to cooperate with Guyana Times, pointing this newspaper to the release that was sent out earlier.
Soon after, this newspaper learnt that SOCU did not make an official request through the right channel for whatever support it felt it needed during the probe.
SOCU, the Guyana Police Force and the Government to a lesser extent, have remained mum on the entire incident and political undertones that are emanating as the fiasco unfolds.
Also, there have been no explanations as to why Plye’s wife was in the vehicle with him while he was on a “legitimate” operation on December 30, 2015.
No statement has been forthcoming about the identity, status or location of the fourth accident victim, who was pulled from the car and rushed to receive medical attention.
Guyana Times learnt on Tuesday that President David Granger; Vice President with responsibility for public security, Khemraj Ramjattan; Brigadier Phillips and Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud were fully briefed on the matter for days but said nothing to the media.
During the 2015 General and Regional Elections, the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) coalition had downplayed public concerns over its paramilitary fetishism which saw it employing the services of scores of former military and Police officials.
The coalition soon after was accused of attempting to subvert the independence of the Guyana Defence and Police Forces with the aim of achieving influence and control over their day to day operations and decisions of a certain nature.
The APNU and AFC then denied interfering but this most recent incident is being seen as having political roots because the Government has never hesitated to brand Brassington publicly as being aligned to the Opposition.

British teen found in shallow grave

JANUARY 9, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

-God-brother  arrested -friend, wanted

The search for missing British teen, Dominic Bernard, came to a grisly end at around 13.30 hrs yesterday, following the discovery of his decomposed body in a shallow grave at Nurney, Corentyne Berbice.
The victim was fully clothed and his body appeared to have been mutilated.
The body was left overnight under guard at the scene. A postmortem is to be conducted today.
Police sources said that Aaron Wilfred Hing, the victim’s god-brother and a prime suspect, was captured last night in a city hotel. He had booked into the hotel at around 17.00 hrs and was asking a staffer to borrow a cell phone when two police ranks, who had received information about his whereabouts, informed the staff that they were looking for a murder suspect.
A source said that Hing attempted to slip away from the scene but one of the policemen recognized him.
He was then arrested and was still being questioned at press time at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. A second man is also in custody.
Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Hing, 23, who is a British citizen, and who had lived with Dominic Bernard’s family before coming to live in Guyana.

Captured: Aaron Hing.

Captured: Aaron Hing.

The bulletin had given Hing’s last known address as Lot 19, Kildonan Village, Corentyne.
A similar bulletin was also issued for Staymon George, who is also 23. His last known address was given as Lot 19 Charles Street, Charlestown and Kildonan Village, Corentyne.
Police sources said that Dominic Bernard’s corpse was found after detectives, responding to an anonymous call, conducted a four-hour search of a desolate and bushy area some five miles off the main road at Kildonan, Corentyne.
The ranks were reportedly tipped off some time on Thursday night that Dominic Bernard had been slain and his body buried in the area.
They reportedly began searching the bushy terrain from as early as 08.00 hrs yesterday.
There are reports that the ranks were about to give up the search when they received a second call.
This caused them to intensify the search and the shallow grave, with its gruesome remains, was eventually found.
Detectives from Georgetown, including ranks from the major Crimes Unit, joined detectives from Berbice in their investigation and remained at the scene up to late yesterday evening.
Indications are that the 18-year-old British citizen was murdered, by persons who knew him, shortly after he arrived in Guyana.
Dominic Bernard reportedly travelled to Guyana on October 14, last to meet his God-brother, Aaron Wilfred Hing.
He failed to make contact with family or friends.
The teenager was scheduled to fly back to England on November 5, 2015.

Staymon George

During a press conference held at Cara Lodge, the missing teen’s father, Andrew Bernard, said that his son left London to travel to Guyana on October 14, 2015 on Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) flight BW 903. He said that Dominic landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri at 21:50hrs and “has not been seen or heard from since.”
He went on to say that his son is six feet tall and of medium build.
According to Mr. Bernard, Dominic was last seen wearing blue jeans and white sweatshirt with a black jacket that has leather in the middle and fabric on the arms.
A photographer/film maker, the teen was also wearing a pair of white Nike sneakers and was carrying a suitcase along with one piece of hand luggage.
Andrew Bernard stated that this was his son’s maiden trip to Guyana. He was supposed to be picked from the airport by his God-brother, whom he was coming to spend time with.
Mr. Bernard stated that after his son failed to return home, he contacted his Godson who claimed that he had not seen the teen and did not even know he had travelled to Guyana.
Mr. Bernard said that it was unusual for his son not to make contact with his family.
He recalled that his son had travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, in the US earlier last year, and had made contact with his family as soon as he touched down there.
Dominic Bernard resided in England with his parents and according to his father, he was not encountering any problems back at home.

On Thursday, police, acting on reports that the missing teen had been spotted, searched locations in Berbice, Sophia and Timehri.

“We were fearful for our lives”

Controversial NICIL probe

− former Miss India Worldwide speaks out on horrifying high-speed chase

BY EDWARD LAYNE

The young female  and her male companion who were being chased by GDF sergeant Robert Pyle of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) on December 30 have broken their silence and tell of the horrifying high-speed chase that ended on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, after Pyle’s pursuing vehicle crashed, killing three persons, including two civilians.

The two victims being chased were Alana Seebaran, wife of Attorney and Opposition parliamentarian Charles Ramson Jr and her brother Raymond Seebaran.

The Guyana Times was able to obtain a copy of the statement given to investigators by Alana Seebaran following the incident.

Seebaran said that on the evening of December 30, she and her brother Raymond visited her Lot 116-117 Cowan Street, Kingston home to pick up supplies for her young baby, when the ordeal began unfolding.
She said upon arrival at her home about 20:30h there was no vehicle or persons in the vicinity, but upon exit she observed two men in the middle of the road, dressed in plain clothes and looking in the direction of her home.

The woman said she became nervous and she along with her brother proceeded quickly to lock the gate and headed to their vehicle, when one of the men on his cellular phone was saying “they coming out now… they coming out now”.

She said as they approached their vehicle, one of the men who remains unknown to them said, “can I have a minute of your time?”

The mother of a young daughter said she became very concerned and nervous and urged her brother to enter the vehicle to which he complied.

She explained that the man walked towards the passenger side where she was seated and signalled her to lower the window.

She said her brother lowered the window about two inches.
“The man did not show us any form of identification but mumbled he was from the Special Crime Organisation and that ‘we need you to wait… our boss is on his way.’ I became very scared as the man had no uniform, never stated his name nor did he show us any identification, so I told my brother to drive away,” Seebaran told investigators in her statement.

She added however, her brother faced some difficulties in driving off as a white car came close behind theirs in an attempt to cut them off, but they eventually managed to elude the men and drove west on Cowan Street, by which time a silver car came into their path forcing them to stop.

“A man came out of the silver car and started to shout at us and bang on our vehicle’s bonnet with his hands. I started to scream for my brother to drive away and he found a small pathway between the trench on the southern side of the street and the parked silver car and drove away heading west on Cowan Street,” the woman recalled.

She said fearful for their lives her brother began speeding as the two vehicles continued to follow them.
She recalled that as they proceeded east along Carifesta Avenue the two cars were still trailing their vehicle and she contacted her father via telephone who advised that they drive to Kitty Police Station.

She recalled that the white car at one point pulled alongside theirs in an attempt to cut them off, but was forced to abandon the manoeuver since there was another vehicle just in front of them.

“After we passed the car which was immediately in front of us, the white car moved towards the southern side of the carriageway and drove alongside us when I felt an impact on our vehicle in the vicinity of the right front wheel area and observed that the white vehicle then careened on the southern side of the carriageway when I heard what sounded like a loud collision. I was still scared and told brother not to stop and that we must go right away to the Kitty Police Station as my father suggested.”

The woman said they drove to the Kitty Police Station but after telling ranks there of their ordeal they were advised to drive to Alberttown, since the incident occurred in that police district.

Seebaran said while there a report was made and they were told by the ranks that “we were free to go home.”
Out of fear they asked that the sergeant escort them home, which he did.

The white car was drive by Guyana Defence Force Intelligence Officer, Robert Pyle.

That car collided with a Canter truck, claiming the life of Sergeant Pyle, his wife Stacy and driver of the Canter Linden Eastman of Prashad Nagar.

When contacted Friday, head of SUCO Sydney James declared, “I have no comment on this matter…” and hung up his phone.

Since the incident, the GDF has issued a statement claiming that Pyle was on a “legitimate” SOCU assignment.

He was part of a group of law enforcement officers staking out the home of head of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) Winston Brassington.

The other male driving the “silver car” – presumably another SOCU officer working with Pyle, has not been identified as yet.

It is important to note that there are no relations between the Seebarans and Brassington.

Woman alleges rape at GPHC

JANUARY 9, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

A 25-year-old woman is accusing a member of staff attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) of raping her while she was a patient at the hospital.
The woman stated that last Monday, while she was lying on her bed in the ward, she was approached by a man, whom she said was dressed in blue and black.
“He tell me that I have to go with him downstairs to get an injection,” she said.
The woman stated that she was then escorted downstairs and led into a dark room where she was instructed by the individual to remove her clothes.
“He had sex with me, and he left me in the room and I couldn’t find my way back (to the ward).”
The woman subsequently made a report to officials of the GPHC and caused an investigation to be launched.
She said that she was given a prophylactic and counseled by a social worker.
However, several sources interviewed by this publication, made claims of the woman – who is a “regular” at the hospital because of her having constant seizures – being intimately involved with her alleged rapist.
Sources have also stated that the woman and the alleged rapist would often have consensual sex at the GPHC. One of the source’s “theories” is that the duo might have been caught in the act causing the “embarrassed” woman to “cry rape”
Both allegations, however, were denied by the woman who expressed disgust and who stated that while she has a lot of friends at the hospital, she has never met this particular individual.
When spoken to recently, she said that several officials attached to the GPHC had visited her and requested that she drop the matter. However, the woman said that she has no such intentions of doing so and with the support of her mother, she is hoping that she will get justice.
Speaking to Minister of Health George Norton yesterday, he revealed that upon hearing of the incident, measures were immediately taken.
“We took measures to remove security personnel who we think were not doing their jobs and also instructed others who were in the area of security and this is being undertaken by someone who is very well experienced in the security sector and is coming directly from the Ministry of Public Health…” he stated.
On the question of whether the alleged assailant was still on the job Norton replied, “Certainly not, investigations are still going on, if it is necessary, charges will be laid.”

According to Chief Executive Officer of the Berbice Bridge Company, Omadatt Samaroo, the Supervisor was in the vicinity of the Republic bank and had just exited the vehicle to make a deposit into the safety deposit box when a lone bandit appeared and pointed a gun to her head and demanded she hand over the cash that was in two night deposit bags.
The man grabbed the bags from the startled employee, jumped the bank fence and escaped in the nearby cane fields.
It is not sure if the BBCI staff was accompanied by any security detail, however people in the vicinity stated that none was available.
It was a regular practice by the BBCI not to have security details accompany their employees when they are depositing money.
It is understood that security details at the Bank who are usually unarmed scampered for cover, some hiding under tables when they saw the man with the gun.
The matter was reported to the police who responded promptly and scoured the area. A man was subsequently nabbed in the vicinity and is in custody. He is said to have been seen with a change of clothes.
Investigations are continuing.

Grocer, 81, wife, 49, butchered by drug-crazed youths

-teen confesses to brutal killing, caught trying to wash off blood

by Michael Jordan and Samuel Whyte
In one of the most shocking confessions in recent times, an 18-year-old boy yesterday related to police how he and two others tortured, robbed and finally hacked an 81-year-old grocer and his 49-year-old wife to death at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
The victims, Doodnauth Rajkumar and Dianne Chammanlall, who own a grocery and beer garden, were terrorized and repeatedly chopped, after the young robbers, all drug-crazed youths, broke into their Lot 93 ‘A’ Bush Lot, Middle Dam, West Coast Berbice property early yesterday morning.
Mr. Rajkumar, with throat slashed from ear to ear, and with one arm partially severed, was found dead in the hallway.
Police reportedly found his wife, Dianne Chammanlall, badly injured and lying in the verandah of the two-storey home.
She succumbed while receiving medical attention at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
The teen, who police identified as Neeman Rafeek, called ‘Shazam’, of Bush Lot New Scheme, Berbice, was captured at his home shortly after fleeing the scene.
At the time, he was washing off the blood of the victims. Detectives also found bloodstained clothing soaked in a bucket.
Up to late yesterday, detectives were still hunting for the detained youth’s two other accomplices. One of the suspects is a 25-year-old former murder accused who was recently arrested, but released, in connection with another murder.
Other reports stated that at least four people are in custody. Police have also recovered a knife that the killers used.
The slain couple operated a grocery as well as a beer garden. Kaieteur News understands that the beer garden was frequented by drug addicts from the community.

Evidence at the slain couple’s home revealed that the killers had devoured chocolates and other confectionaries at the scene, and had even defecated in the home. Police also found a bag that the young killers had stashed with confectionaries, but were forced to abandon after the ranks arrived.
In a detailed statement to detectives, the detained youth reportedly admitted that the gang had broken into the premises to rob the victims.
The teen reportedly stated that after cornering Doodnauth Rajkumar and Dianne Chammanlall in their home, the robbers began chopping their victims, while repeatedly demanding money.
But it was while they were torturing the couple that neighbours reportedly heard the commotion.
They contacted the police who rushed to the scene and saw the three killers scaling a fence.
Inside, they found the upper flat ransacked and awash with blood, with the dead businessman and his mortally wounded wife nearby.
While the victims were taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, police set up a cordon in an attempt to capture the victims, but the suspects managed to slip the dragnet.
However, acting on information, police ranks went to the Bush Lot New Scheme home of teenage suspect, Neeman Rafeek.
There, they reportedly found him trying to wash off his victim’s blood, while his clothing, also bloodstained, was in a bucket of water.
Mr. Rajkumar was the father of four, who are all overseas. The victim was also said to be a US citizen.
His reputed wife also has a daughter who lives overseas.
His nephew, Attorney- at- Law Ramesh Rajkumar, said that his uncle recently travelled overseas to visit his children and take his regular medical checkup.
Rajkumar stated that relatives received a call around 04:30 hrs from someone who told them about the incident.
He stated that the couple was badly beaten and chopped and appeared to have been tortured.
The nephew also stated that the thieves took time to drink beers and eat chocolates, before defecating in a number of areas in the house.
According to Rajkumar, he was told that the bandits entered the house around 02:30 hours.
It is unclear how they gained entry, since there were no signs of forced entry.
Residents stated that a number of youths would drink, and even “smoke weed” in front of the premises.
Some speculated that one or more of the bandits, who are all from the area, may have secreted themselves into the shop before it was closed.
Residents were loud in praise of the police for the swift manner in which they responded to the situation.
A large number of people, including relatives, gathered outside the couple’s home when daylight dawned. They saw the undertakers removing the bodies and were stunned.

Body on yacht had gunshot to face

JANUARY 10, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Local investigators have contacted their French counterparts as they collaborate to probe the death of Frenchman Michel Bozier, whose body along with that of his dog was found on a yacht 200 miles off the coast of Guyana.

The “Allegro” moored at the GDF Coastguard wharf.

The “Allegro” moored at the GDF Coastguard wharf.

Local police took possession of the body yesterday after the yacht, “Allegro”, was brought into Port Georgetown by the Guyana Defence Force Coastguard.
According to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, the body bore a gunshot wound to the face which is consistent with a shotgun blast.
The dog was also shot dead with a shotgun.
Blanhum said that while a post mortem examination has not yet been performed on the body, investigators are looking at every possible theory, including suicide as the reason for Bozier’s death.
A shotgun was found under the face…There were three other shotguns in the cabin,” the Crime Chief said.
From all indications no one else was on the vessel when Bozier died, since according to the Crime Chief, everything was intact, including credit cards belonging to the dead man.
Investigators were able to ascertain from documents found on the yacht that Bozier celebrated his 70th birthday two months ago.
The yacht bearing the bodies of Bozier and his dog was first spotted on January 5 by the crew of a tanker vessel which was moving from Jamaica to Brazil.
The crew sent a transmission which was picked up by the local coastguard, who subsequently informed the relevant agencies.  The coast guard was provided with the reading of where the sighting was made.
Using the information, the Guyana Defence Force sent out its Skyvan to conduct a flyover survey to confirm the information.
After this was done, the aircraft returned to the coast and a team from the Maritime Administration, the GDF and the Guyana Police Force went to the location and brought the French registered yacht into port.

Three held for illegal 9mm in car

JANUARY 10, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Police on the West Demerara continue to be on the alert to ensure that they minimise criminal activity in their Division.
Yesterday, they were successful in taking another illegal weapon off the streets and might have been able to halt the progress of a gang that was wreaking havoc in La Parfaite Harmonie community.
Divisional Commander Stephen Mansell told this newspaper yesterday that his ranks were on patrol duty around 10:20 hours when they intercepted a car at Schoonard Public Road, which leads into La Parfaite Harmonie.
The occupants were ordered out while a search was carried on in their presence.
An alert policeman observed a bulge under a mat in the vehicle. A closer examination revealed a 9mm pistol with nine matching rounds of ammunition. The three men were promptly taken into custody.
The Commander said that apart from being charged for the illegal possession of the firearm and ammunition, the men will be placed on ID parade to see if they were involved in any of the criminal activities that were perpetrated in the area within the past few months.
“We had some hits in the Parfait area late last year and we will be investigating to see if they were involved,” the Commander said.

Single women abandon their homes

JANUARY 10, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

As bandits continue to invade the homes of women who live alone on the Essequibo Coast, many of those women are now forced to abandon their homes out of fear of being physically harmed or even killed.
One such recent attack targeted a woman who has resided for years at Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast. The victim revealed during a conversation that she still cannot understand why the bandits chose to invade her house and cart off all of her clothing and food stuff, even though she secured the building and had gone away for a while.
According to the woman, the night after she left the Coast to spend some time away, her home was invaded and ransacked.
The worried woman said that the intruders searched every room, purse, cupboard and wardrobe took away all of her clothing including her underwear.
The woman said that the incident has forced her to never sleep in her house again. A report was lodged and detectives visited the scene and conducted a thorough investigation but to date no one has been arrested. Further reports have indicated that there was no sign of forced entry except footprints in the sand behind the building.(Yannason Duncan)

Chronicle pressman robbed

SENIOR Pressman of the Guyana Chronicle, Clint Bastian, was robbed by three men of his motorcycle early Sunday morning at Mon Repos Public Road, East Coast Demerara. He was on his way home from work.Bastian said he had made a purchase of some groceries earlier that morning, and while going home, in the vicinity of the D & D Bar at Mon Repos, he was alerted by a man that his grocery bag had come loose and sugar was falling out. He said he stopped the motorcycle to retrieve the sugar when he was held from behind by a man who demanded money before throwing him to the ground.

The 57-year-old press operator said the man was joined by two other accomplices, one of whom was armed with a cutlass. He was relieved of his Samsung cell phone and a silver ring after a search of his pockets came up empty.

The incident happened at about 04:15 hrs on Sunday morning even as patrons were exiting the gay bar and witnessing the robbery. Instead of assisting him, some persons encouraged the bandits to chop him because he was supposed to have money.

Bastian said he was wearing a silver ring, which he took off and handed over while pleading with the robbers not to harm him. In the process, the bandits made off with his black 150 CC Scrambler motorcycle, CF 8539, and his helmet.

Bastian said the theft of his bike was a great loss because it formed part of his livelihood — a part-time delivery job at a fast food outlet.

Bastian said he went to the Beterverwagting Police Station and filed a report, then began calling his cell phone number, 614-8325. A man answered and said he had purchased the phone from a friend.

Bastian said he tried to reason with the man to provide more information in an effort to locate his motorcycle, but the man discontinued the conversation.

The police have reportedly told Bastian that they can do nothing.
This publication understands that even though the 2 am curfew is in force, the popular gay bar at Mon Repos opens until daylight most times, and the three men who robbed Bastian usually are found out there reliving people of their valuables.

According to Pastor Rohit, he was preparing for a prayer session at the Enmore Baptist Church. “I was preparing to go to church prayer meeting at approximately 7:30pm. We have a vehicle parked on the road, so I was taking that vehicle into the yard; and whilst parking it, this guy shouted ‘Come out of the car or I gon shoot you!’ I had the door already open and so I came out,” the injured man recounted.

Both Pastor Rohit and his wife were beaten to the head by the robbers, but they were not seriously injured.
The pastor explained that three men who appeared to be in their early 20s carried out the attack on his family. The men entered the two-storey house from the lower flat, which also houses a grocery shop. Deornarine’s wife had left the grilled door open for him to retrieve his Bible and other materials.

“Eventually, the guy hit me in my head and said ‘Give me the money!’ and the other one hit my wife and asked her, ‘Where is the money? Where is the money?’”

According to the 60-year-old pastor, the ordeal lasted for approximately five minutes. “They were lashing her in her head,” he recounted.

The Guyana Chronicle was informed by members of the Community Policing Group present at the Deonarines’ home, that a hammer belonging to the family was used by the bandits during the attack. A cutlass was also used by the bandits.

Meanwhile, police combed the area in search of the bandits. It was believed that one of the bandits was trapped in the upper flat of the house, but the police search came up empty-handed. However, two black toy guns were found in the house by the law enforcement ranks. The retrieved items were taken away by the police for testing.

Taxi driver carjacked by passengers

JANUARY 18, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Taxi driver Keith Abraham is counting his lucky stars that carjackers didn’t kill him while stealing the vehicle he was driving.
Abraham said he was plying his trade in a silver-grey Toyota Premio, HC 5702, on Waterloo Street at about 22:30hrs Saturday night when two men flagged him down.
He said he saw nothing about the men to alarm him, so he picked them up.
“They jump in the car and said they going Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, and so I started heading in that direction. “
Abraham said one sat next to him while the other sat behind the driver’s seat.
“When I turn the car into Thomas Lands between Albert and Camp Street the guy sitting behind me pulled out a gun and placed it to my neck. He seh stop the f*$#ing car and get out.”
Fear engulfed Abraham but, he said he tried to talk his way out of the situation. However the men didn’t seem interested in anything that he had to say.
“I tell the one with the gun to my neck that they could take what they want, it ain’t call for this because I have a small son to live for.”

According to Abraham, it was then that the man sitting next to him whipped out a piece of metal and attempted to hit him in the face. Abraham said he blocked and the blow grazed his left arm.
All this occurred while the car was still moving. He said the robber with the metal bar parked the car and Abraham said he managed to open his door and escape.
“I was so scared that all I know is that amidst getting the lash on me hand I was out the car and I was up the road so fast that Usain Bolt an all couldn’t catch me if he tried,” the man said. He ran west along Thomas Lands towards Camp Road.
When he felt safe enough from a little distance off he looked back and saw when “The one with the gun jump in the driver’s seat and the drove off east along Thomas Lands.”
According to the driver, he was relieved of a cellular phone, about $8000 and a base radio valued at $120,000. His driver’s licence and other documents were also taken away but he was just happy to be alive.
“To me they wanted the car or they would have shot me.”  He said after several attempts to get help from passing cars one stopped and he made a report at the Alberttown Police Station.
The car is owned by businessman Mohammed Alli. When contacted, he expressed his disappointment at what he dubs “the current situation with robbers and carjackers.” The car he said is valued at $2.7M.

Are the police doing enough to track down wanted persons?

JANUARY 18, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

–   Poor communication cited

Poor communication and a limited number of ranks may be some of the reasons why persons, who are wanted by the police for various crimes, including murder, are roaming the streets freely.
This is according to the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud.
There have been several questions as to whether the people are doing enough to arrest wanted persons.
Responding to this question, the Commissioner said that there are a number of things which have been preventing the police from identifying and picking up wanted men.
He listed communication as the main reason followed by the number of ranks needed to develop profiles of these wanted men.
“We have 3600 ranks deployed and there is a communication issue. We know that someone is wanted at one police station but the extent to which the information is shared is a problem,” Persaud explained.
He went on to say that dedicated work was supposed to have been done to develop profiles that will help those who are actually making the arrest but, “The number of persons that we can deploy to do that at this time has to do with our ability to communicate, so it gets down to that patrol man down on the ground.”
Within the past couple of months, a number of wanted persons have been arrested by the police in some of the busy streets of Georgetown.

Some of them have been on the Force’s wanted list for as long as five years. However, those same persons were right under the police’s nose daily but were not recognized for a very long time.
Only last month, 26-year-old Seon Anthony Edwards of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was arrested in the vicinity of Regent and Hinck Streets, where he was selling bottled water.
Edwards was wanted by police for the 2010 murder of Rawle Peters, called ‘Dumb Boy.’
Peters and Edwards had an argument over $300,000 during which the victim was chopped to death.
Edwards was only arrested when a passenger in a mini bus pointed out to a cop that the ‘water vendor’ is a murderer. Had that passenger not recognized Edwards then he would have continued selling on the streets.
Also, in October last, Shawn Fordyce, a man who was wanted for carrying out a brutal cutlass attack on his wife and three daughters back in 2013, was arrested in the same house at ‘B’ Field Sophia where he carried out the attack.
Prior to his arrest, Fordyce had been selling newspapers in some of the busy streets in Georgetown including Mandela Avenue.
Now, this is someone whose photograph was once pasted on some of the walls of some police stations but yet he went on with his life without being noticed.
In November last, 24-year-old Jermaine Simon called ‘Lapsy’ of Lot 41 Norton Street Bagotstown, EBD, was shot dead, allegedly by a member of a rival gang, Anthony Trim, who is still on the run.
Simon was wanted by the police for killing Ryan Sooklall in March 2015 at Providence, EBD.
According to reports, he and Sooklall had a falling out that saw Sooklall and his gang shooting up Jermaine Simon’s home.
The following day, the 24-year-old Simon retaliated by walking up to Sooklall and pumping bullets into him.
A wanted bulletin was subsequently issued for him but the police were unable to make an arrest.
Members of the public however believed that the police are not doing enough to arrest wanted persons since they claimed, Jermaine Simon was roaming Bagotstown freely.
He had been operating a shop in that community.
As the Guyana Police Force continues to move forward in their crime fighting strategy, the Commissioner said that this year, not only will ranks know the names of those wanted but they will know exactly what he/she looks like. Kaieteur News understands that this will be done via the setting up of a database.
Knowing the names of criminals is not enough, but having an idea of what the person looks like will help a lot.
Recalling an incident in May 2014 when four prisoners escaped from the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court by ripping the grill work and mesh that covered the window at the back of the building, the police had no idea who they were looking for.
Two reporters from this media house had to send a photograph of the escapees to the police via social media.
This newspaper was told that there are currently 105 to 120 persons on the wanted list. These include persons who are wanted for robberies under arms, rape and murders among other crimes.

A post mortem revealed that the woman died of drowning, but there was evidence to support that she received blows to the head.
The police are treating this case as murder.
New Year’s Day began with four murders. The first was that of 24 year-old Asif Hafeez who was stabbed to death during a confrontation with another man, ten minutes into the New Year. The police had stated that Hafeez of Lot 72 Grant 1780 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice was imbibing alcohol with another man when an argument ensued.
It was reported that the victim was stabbed to the neck and succumbed to his injuries at the Skeldon Hospital.
The suspect is still on the run.

Missing Sophia man found dead in trench

Family members of a missing Sophia, Georgetown, man confirmed their worst fears Tuesday morning after his partially decomposed body was fished out a short distance from his home.

Dead, Akeem Culley

Dead, Akeem Culley

The dead man has been identified as Akeem Culley, 25, called Jamal, a miner of North Sophia. The man’s body was discovered in a trench called “Forty Foot” by a resident on the nearby reserved lands.

According to reports, Culley had been missing for about three weeks after four men stormed his house and took him away. He was never seen or heard from so his reputed wife, Kendyce Duncan, lodged a report with the police.

Speaking with Guyana Times the woman stated that she last saw her partner of five months on the night of December 29, 2015. She recalled that around 01:00h, she was woken by calls from her neighbour (also named Akeem) who requested she open the door since he had something to tell her.

The woman said she complied and upon opening the front door, she was confronted by four armed and masked men, all of whom were dressed in black. “I didn’t see (my neighbour), all I see was all these handguns point to my face. So I started to back-up and they just barge in… Akeem was in the bedroom and he get up same time and the men hold on pon he and start pull he outside,” Duncan related.

She went on to say that after the men dragged Culley out of the house, she heard him cry out “ah” and immediately after, two gunshots were fired. “I run out, thinking that he get shoot and lying outside but when I go, I didn’t see he or anybody,” the woman recounted.

Duncan said she reported the incident to the police and ranks on patrol came to the area and they conducted a search but came up empty handed. She added that later that morning, she went to the station and made a formal complaint about the incident. The police was treating the case as an abduction.

However, about a week after, Duncan said persons had informed her that they were getting foul scent from the “Forty Foot” and as such she used to make daily checks to see if they would find anything.

“Now (Tuesday) morning, when I getting ready for work, a man said something raise up in “Forty Foot” and I should go check to see if is Akeem… When I reach there, I recognise the red and white American Eagle boxer on the body because that’s what he had on the night when they take him away so I call the police and we family,” she further related.

According to Duncan, the man’s skull was showing. She added too that his feet bore a gunshot wound while his stomach had a stab wound.

Asked by this newspaper whether Culley had any issues with anyone, Duncan recalled that the Monday before his disappearance, some men from North Sophia had alleged that he along with her brother and brother-in-law stole a motorcycle.

The woman said that at the time Culley was not at home and when she called him, he claimed that he was at his mother. “I tell he don’t come home cause these people gon beat yuh up but he turn and say that he coming, he gotta clear his name because he aint thief no motorbike,” she added.

He went home around midday on December 29. Furthermore, Duncan said over the past few weeks, the police had held several persons for Culley’s disappearance including the owner of the alleged stolen motorcycle and her neighbour, Akeem, both of whom were released due to lack of evidence. She explained that her neighbour said he was forced by the gunmen to get her to open the door on the night in question.

During the stabbing the woman’s daughter was also injured by the knife-wielding Lawrence Carter and is presently a patient at the Linden Hospital Complex.
Carter, who is said to have inflicted injuries with a knife on himself after attacking the woman and her daughter, is also at the LHC where he was under police guard Monday.
Speaking with this newspaper, another of Sullivan’s daughters, Saskia Campbell, 16, said her mother arrived home a short while before the incident occurred and an argument ensued.
“I heard him saying, “How you could do this to me?” the teenager related, adding that Carter began stabbing her mother.
She said that her sister Shemeka intervened, begging Carter to desist from attacking her mother when he turned the knife on her, too.
This newspaper was told that the dead woman in an attempt to escape plunged through louvers window in her bedroom but was pursued by Carter.
Saskia further related that she, her mother and sister managed to escape from the yard but were pursued by Carter. They were rescued by a neighbour who rushed them to the LHC.
However, Sullivan, was a beverage vendor at the Mackenzie Market wharf, was pronounced dead on arrival at LHC. This newspaper was told that Sullivan was stabbed 19 times.
Guyana Times understands that the relationship between Carter, a seasonal construction worker and Sullivan has been on the rocks for some time now and the woman was planning to leave him.
Reports also indicate that Carter had accused the deceased of infidelity.
Information reaching this newspaper further indicated that Sullivan had travelled to Georgetown Friday to conduct business and had returned late Sunday evening. She had reportedly confided in a friend that she and Carter were expected to meet with “Welfare” over some issues on Monday.
A neighbour related that Carter was a “jealous” man and stated that the two had constant arguments.
On the fateful morning, persons in the vicinity recalled hearing screams from inside the home.
“Is run out she run out the bedroom to holler for she children them and he run behind she. The big girl stop he and confront he and he bore she up”, a neighbour related.
Another related that the couple were engaged in an argument on Friday before Sullivan left home.
“All I hear she telling he ‘I is a hard-working woman. You always at them bars’. But you could see she was afraid of him because when he roll up to she after that, whatever he tell she, it mek she stop talk. I ain’t see she back after that. This morning I hear he kill she. The two of them always quarrelling every day.”
“He don’t want work, all he does want is she to mind he”, yet another stated.
When Guyana Times arrived at the scene, a blood-stained mattress was in the yard, along with bloodstains leading up to the steps. A few wooden boards were placed to conceal the window which the deceased allegedly plunged through.
There are reports that Carter alleged he sustained injuries to his neck by the woman’s daughter, however other reports indicated that he inflicted the wounds on himself.
He reportedly underwent surgery for his injury and is assisting police with investigations.

Dead: Zabida Khan

Dead: Zabida Khan

Essequibo (EBE) Thursday night has been identified as 41-year-old Bibi Zabida Khan, a mother of three of Sea-view, Stewartville.
Two of Khan’s children identified her remains at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour yesterday, a day after she went missing.
Her husband, Randolph Williams, a cane cutter, is still on the run. Williams fled into a bushy area after drowning his wife in a trench in the community, which is located about four villages away from her home.
She was reportedly stabbed, beaten and strangled in the trench by her partner of 11 years.
The killing is said to have stemmed from allegations of infidelity. Her neighbours yesterday confirmed this information.
When this publication visited the woman’s home yesterday, neighbours said that the woman might have been killed after her partner found out that she was unfaithful to him for several years.
According to one neighbour, “For years now, this woman cheating on him and all the neighbours know but like he never knows. Only last month he confirmed she was seeing someone.”
Kaieteur News was told that a little before Christmas, Williams was informed by a neighbour that his wife was having an affair with someone. He was also informed that his wife had a cellular phone which she used to communicate with the individual.
“Like when he left and go to work, she does use this phone and make plans with this man and whenever he (husband) come home back in the afternoon, she does hide it so one day he lied and tell her he going to work but he went hiding in the fowl pen at the bottom of the house,” the neighbour related.

The house where the couple lived.

The house where the couple lived.

She added, “She thought that he gone to work and she called the sweet man and her husband was in the pen downstairs listening to the entire conversation and then he walk behind her and touch her on her shoulders and collected the phone.”
Kaieteur News was told that Khan was beaten and thrown out of the house by her partner. “She mek he get lock up and then the matter went to the Probation Officer and then the two of them make up back and she move in back with he.”
All this happened last December.
“They were back to normal and living really good and loving until two days ago when we heard a big cuss out. They were cussing about some phone card so I don’t know if he found a phone card in the house and think she was still talking to the man or what,” another neighbour related.
The neighbours said that on Thursday morning, everything seemed normal between the couple since they were seen kissing on their verandah.
A little later, they were seen walking out of the village holding hands but never returned. It is believed that it was then when the mother of three was lured to her death.
This newspaper was told that people saw a man beating a woman in Zeelugt but when they ran to offer assistance, he jumped in a trench with her and strangled her in the trench after which he escaped in a bushy area.
The couple’s neighbours yesterday said that they are convinced Williams will kill himself since he reportedly told one of his neighbours last month when he found his wife with a phone, that he will kill her and then kill himself.
The couple had no children together. “They had a son but he de fall down the step and died years now.”
Meanwhile, one of the woman’s daughters, Saskha Altaf, said that she last saw her mother alive on Sunday when they went to church together. “My mother was so happy. She keep on telling me that she wants another grandbaby.”
According to the woman, a little after lunch yesterday, she was informed that her mother was missing and that a body was found.
“My sister went and then she called me and tell me it was her,” the woman’s daughter said. She explained that her step father was always abusive to her mother and threatened to kill her many times.
Investigations are still ongoing.
Only four days ago, a Wismar, Linden woman was stabbed to death by her reputed husband, Lawrence Carter, who vented his wrath with a knife after she returned home in the wee hours after a weekend out.
The woman, Leolyn Sullivan, was reportedly stabbed 31 times when she was cornered in a neighbour’s yard after she had jumped through a window, shattering several louvre panes in a desperate but unsuccessful bid to escape the attack. She died while receiving medical attention.

The police in a statement revealed that four men – one armed with a firearm – entered the bank around 12:50 pm, held up the lone female private security guard and relieved her of her .32 service revolver before turning their attention to the female tellers on duty.
In a five-minute ordeal, the perpetrators relieved the tellers of an undisclosed amount of cash before boarding a waiting silver grey/off white Premio motor vehicle bearing a “false registration plate”, PNN 8984 .
In wake of the incident, the police said that they responded to the report quickly. Several strategic road blocks were established and the anti-crime patrols were alerted along with the activation of the Crime Intelligence Units.
“Shock” was the word used by residents and business owners in the area after learning of the robbery. One businessman who requested anonymity expressed his concern saying that due to the “brazen” nature of the crime, the police would have to put additional safety protocols in place.
“This is a clear indication that crime is definitely on the rise and more (police) patrols need to be carried out, not only in the nights but also during the day,” the man said.
A resident also related that the “job was planned” since the robbers, chose a day when the market was “not bright” to commit the crime.

Govt slapped with $10M lawsuit after businessman’s jewellery seized at CJIA

A local businessman has moved to the courts, slapping Government with a $10 million lawsuit after he was detained at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) for several hours and his jewellery, valued at some $4 million, was confiscated on Tuesday.

Richard Ramjit, a businessman and goldsmith of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was detained for four hours and two pieces of his jewellery, a gold and silver necklace and a gold and silver band, were seized by officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) under the new Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Amendment Act passed by Government last year.

This incident has brought to the fore concerns about how potential travellers will be affected by this new legislation, which allows designated officers to seize jewellery in excess of US$10,000.
According to the man’s Attorney, Anil Nandlall, Opposition Member of Parliament, he had pointed out this fact in Parliament during his arguments on the amendments.

“In 2013, I cautioned that if certain amendments were made to the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act conferring a power upon law enforcement officers to confiscate cash and jewellery to the tune of US$10,000 and above, the said power would be abused and misused … It is only a matter of time before this misuse and abuse is extended right across this country and persons who have the value of US$10,000 in cash and/or jewellery in the course of their legitimate business are exposed to the same being confiscated by an errant or overzealous law enforcement officer,” Nandlall said.

In the Notice of Motion filed on Thursday, Ramjit said that this was the first time he has had this experience despite wearing the two pieces of jewellery whenever he travelled and he would normally travel regularly.
The man noted that on the day in question as he was checking in at the airline counter, a person in civilian clothes approached him, and indicated that he was a CANU officer and wanted to search his suitcases. The officer also questioned him, the businessman recalled.

Ramjit added that after being questioned by two officers in a room, he was allowed to proceed to the Departure Longue, but shortly after, he was detained again.

“He again accused me of smuggling gold and again I denied this allegation.” The businessman said he was then taken to the tarmac where his checked-in suitcase was opened in the presence of the other passengers.
“This officer then demanded that I hand over to him the said neckwear and wristband; I did so and I have not seen either pieces of jewellery since. This officer also requested that I report the following morning to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) at Camp Street, Georgetown.”

Ramjit said that eventually he was told to leave, but by that time the flight had already left without him, incurring him a loss of US$750 (the cost of his ticket) and a further GY$400,000 for items he was supposed to buy and resell to make a profit.

“When I was being escorted around the Airport and when my suitcase was searched on the tarmac, the same were done in the full view of all other passengers and other persons, and I felt publicly humiliated and embarrassed,” the man stated.

In addition to asking the court to grant an order for his jewellery to be returned, Ramjit is also asking for “damages in excess of ten million dollars ($10,000,000) for breach of the applicant’s fundamental rights and freedom guaranteed by the Constitution of Guyana”.

3 charged with rustling cow

Three men were on Friday placed on $25,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with stealing a cow.

David Edwards, 52, a farmer of Annai, North Rupununi, stood to answer to the charge which read that between Monday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 19, 2016, he and two relatives, Cleveland Edwards, 26, and Cleitus Edwards, 18, stole a cow valued $75,000, property of Randolph Gilbert, in Region Nine (Upper Essequibo-Upper Takutu). The other two accused were also charged with the same offence.

It was reported that beef from the animal, which was butchered, was recovered.

The three farmers were represented by Attorney Peter Hugh, who made an application for the matter to be transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court, since the cost of one plane ticket to travel from Lethem to Georgetown to attend court was $50,000 and hence too expensive for his clients to manage. He further requested bail in a reasonable sum, as two of the accused were fathers with families to maintain.

There was no objection to bail, and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for March 2.

Bandits duct tape, terrorise and rob Regent Street staff

Some time around 8:30 am, the staff of Klassic Kollections, located on Regent and Alexander Streets, were pounced upon by five unmasked men as they were reporting to work.
Based on reports, the perpetrators carted off $130, 000 and US$40 before fleeing the scene in a waiting car.
One staff member recalls opening the gate for a car which is usually parked in the store, to exit when the men – one armed with a gun – walked into the building, closed the door and ushered everyone to the centre of the building.
“They duct tape us, saying how they don’t want hurt us and how they only want the boss man money,” the teary-eyed woman recalled.
The woman said that she was too upset to recall how many staffers were present and everything that took place. However, she said that several persons were dealt blows to the head and other parts of the body.
The woman stated that after the men obtained the money, they boarded a “silver car” and fled the scence.
An Indian national, believed to be the owner of the establishment, refused to provide any additional information saying that they wished not to publicise the incident. He said this as he caressed the top of his head with a cotton rag.

Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission in Durban Backlands, Georgetown

Two armed men on Monday morning pulled off a brazen daylight robbery on the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission in Durban Backlands, Georgetown, carting off $1.7 million.

Reports are the men, who were well-dressed, walked past the security at the front gate about 09:50h under the pretext of conducting a transaction at the finance department.

As they entered the building, they reportedly held up three female staff members attached to the finance section and demanded that they hand over the money. This newspaper was told that the gunmen then relieved the three women of $1.7 million in cash and cheques before calmly leaving the building.

It was not until the men left that an alarm was raised and the Police were summoned to the scene. Following their arrival, the Police conducted a patrol in the surrounding areas, but came up empty-handed.

An investigation is underway, and Police are looking at the possibility that the robbery might have been an inside job. When Guyana Times visited the Commission on Monday, the security related that staff members were on lunch at the time.

The Police had already visited and taken statements from the three females who were accosted by the gunmen. Several calls to the Lands and Surveys Commission for a comment on the robbery proved futile.

Meanwhile, persons who were working in close proximity to the Lands and Surveys Commission said that there were no alarms raised to indicate that there was a robbery nor did they see any unusual movements at the time the incident took place.

Man killed, dumped in bush at Mahaicony

THE body of a father of four was discovered with the lower right leg severed along with several chops decorating his slim figure which was found in a clump of bushes in Mahaicony,East Coast Demerara, yesterdayday morning.Dead is 41-year-old Curt Burke of Lot 20, Old Road, Drill, Mahaicony. The mutilated body was partially wrapped in tree vines when it was discovered. The police in a statement said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Burke, whose body was found at about 09:30hrs.
The lawmen said that the injuries are suspected to have resulted from a hit-and-run accident.
However, relatives dismissed what the police stated as mere speculation, noting that the father of four was murdered.
“His head had a large hole in it like someone shot him and his leg was chopped from his body, there was no blood or skid marks where they said the accident occurred. There was blood nowhere, it appears as if he was killed and brought to that place to make it look like an accident,” his aunt Carmen Burke disclosed.

Other reports disclosed that a car struck Burke’s bicycle on Drill Public Road and the driver upon investigating what he had hit, was told by a man nearby to return to his vehicle and leave, since staying and looking around may put him in problems. The driver on the dark roadway decided to heed the man’s advice and swiftly left the scene. Burke’s bicycle was found with only a minor bend to the wheel.
According to one relative: “They found him with his arm in the air like if he was blocking chops and lashes. His leg was found a far distance away from the body.”

Other reports revealed that Burke was drinking Tuesday night and never returned home as usual to assist his relative with work around the yard. “Is a very dark area he living and I don’t know if anybody do him anything when he was coming home or if he was drunk,” one resident said. “He lives with his 10-year-old son, but the boy is by his aunt, so we didn’t see him Wednesday morning as usual,” the resident related. Curt was described as a “jack of all trades” and would usually work as a mason, carpenter and vendor at Bourda Market.

No bail for ‘Baroda’ robbers

CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday denied bail to three men who were recently charged and made their appearance before her for the robbery committed at the Bank of Baroda Mon Repos Branch last Friday.Thirty one-year-old Sean Anthony Aaron, who is a taxi driver of 317 North-East La Penitence; 28-year-old Kennard Jabar, of 88 Freeman Street, East La Penitence who is self-employed; and 39-year-old graphic artist Eon Campbell of Campbellville, were not required to plead to the indictable charges.
The charge that was read stated that on January 22, 2016 at Mon Repos, being armed with a gun together with others, the trio robbed Raywantie Lall and Latchmie Mohabir, two tellers who were on duty, of $2.75 million and Shirley Lucas the female security guard of her. 32 Taurus revolver, property of RK Security service.
Campbell was represented by attorney-at-Law, Paul Braam, while the other two men were unrepresented. Campbell’s lawyer requested bail for him on the grounds that he was not a flight risk and was married with three children. He further stated that the accused has been a businessman for in excess of 15 years.
Police prosecutor Deniro Jones opposed bail on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the charge, and the penalty the offence attracts and the fact that the offence occurred during the day, which threatened the safety of innocent citizens.
He stated that there was credible evidence against the accused men – two caution statements and an oral confession. The prosecutor also mentioned that one of the accused had given conflicting addresses.
The magistrate denied bail.
The matter was transferred to the Vigilance Magistrates Court for February 9.
Last Friday afternoon there was a daring daylight armed robbery at the Bank of Baroda branch located at Mon Repos Mall. Reports say that the bandits had been observed in the area of the bank Friday morning before the actual robbery. With facial disguises, they descended on the bank and held up the staff and a few customers.
This newspaper understands that the men had apparently received word that a large sum had been deposited in the bank earlier Friday morning.
Police reported that at about 12:50hrs, four men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, entered the Bank of Baroda Inc. at Mon Repos, ECD, and held up the lone female private security guard on duty and took away her .32 service revolver.
During the incident, which lasted about five minutes, the men then held up the two female tellers and took away the cash, escaping in a waiting white Premio motor vehicle bearing false registration plate PNN 8984, police added.

-confesses to luring victim to death

Police in Berbice are preparing to charge a 19-year-old Corentyne man who has reportedly confessed to the

Money changer Mohamed Fizal Baksh

brutal murder of money changer Mohamed Fizal Mahmood Baksh, last December.
The suspect, Phileman Boodhoo, called Kevin, was arrested yesterday, one month after he managed to flee to Trinidad to escape arrest following the discovery of Baksh’s body in a bushy section of the No. 63 Village, Corentyne foreshore. The man was reported missing three days earlier.
Boodhoo, who also hails from Number 63 Village, Corentyne, reportedly told investigators a tale of how he lured the money changer to the beach with the sole intention of robbing him to take care of personal debts he had racked up over a period.
The suspect claimed that he was pushed into the act after he defaulted on a loan he had taken from a commercial bank last October. He was desperate for cash, since the guarantor for the loan was constantly pestering him.
Since he was aware that Baksh known as ‘Sugar Cake’ usually carried large amounts of cash to do his business, Boodhoo decided to target him.
He told investigators that he contacted the money changer and told him that he knew two people who wanted to change large amounts of foreign currency and he was willing to take Baksh to them at Number 64 Village on the Corentyne.
The suspect left and then rented a car for $3,000 after arranging to pick up the money changer to take him to the “clients”.
However, when he picked up Baksh, he told him about a slight change in the arrangement; instead of meeting the clients at Number 64 village, they were to meet them at the Number 63 Beach.
“He tell the man that the people were afraid to do such a large transaction in the open out of fear of being targeted by bandits,” this newspaper was told.

Suspect Phileman Boodhoo, called Kevin

Suspect Phileman Boodhoo, called Kevin

The money changer who never suspected anything close to what Boodhoo had in his mind, complied with the new arrangement.
At the beach, both Boodhoo and Baksh exited the car and began walking towards where they were supposed to meet the persons who wanted to change foreign currency.
“He said that the money changer was walking in front and he was looking around for a piece of wood to lash him in his head to carry out his plan,” a source close to the investigation revealed.
Boodhoo eventually found the wood and dealt the 56-year old money changer several blows to his head, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Boodhoo then rummaged through the mortally wounded man’s pockets and removed all the cash he had before returning to the rented car.
He counted the money and found it to be $600,000.
Boodhoo then returned the car, even tipping the owner an extra thousand dollars.
He subsequently bought a ticket to Trinidad after putting some of the cash in a local bank.
After the money changer was reported missing suspicion immediately fell on Boodhoo, but by then he had already fled the jurisdiction.
After Baksh’s body was found 48 hours after he had disappeared, police issued a wanted bulletin for the suspect.
While on the run, Boodhoo reportedly contacted his mother, and despite telling her that he is innocent, he vowed to turn himself in.
Shamyela Boodhoo had told Kaieteur News that her son did contact her from an unknown number.
“He said ‘Hi Mom, I innocent (and) I coming,’ and I say, ‘Where are you?’ and the phone cut off.” Mrs. Boodhoo said that she did inform the police about the call.
This newspaper was unable to ascertain when Boodhoo returned to Guyana and if he voluntarily turned himself in.
Police in Berbice are now putting the finishing touches to their file on the matter and they will be seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecution on the way forward.

Continental Agency Limited employees concoct $1.2M robbery

Hours after claiming that they were held at gunpoint and relieved of $1.2 million, a driver and a porter of the Continental Group of Agencies confessed to being the mastermind behind the robbery.
The alleged robbery reportedly occurred at Crane Village, West Coast Demerara on Thursday evening at about 18:40h.
Initial reports stated that the two men were driving a distribution truck along the Crane Village Public Road when they were intercepted by a white Toyota Raum after which the three occupants held them at gunpoint and relieved them of money, a lap top computer, mobile phones and other personal belongings.
The men also claimed they were tied up and left on the roadway but was rescued by a passerby who in turn contacted the police. As police arrived on the scene and questioned the men, they realised something about the robbery was amiss, hence the men were taken into police custody.
As police continued to interrogate them on Friday morning, they admitted that they had planned the robbery. A police source told Guyana Times that the men confessed in contacting three associates and related the plan. The three men in the car were not armed, according to one of the men. He also stated that the drivers of both vehicles had arranged to stop at a particular location where the money bag would have been handed over.
After collecting the money, the car drove away. The police are now hunting the three other men involved in the botched robbery.

Alpha United goalkeeper, Ronson Williams, and carpenter Carlos Anderson.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum made this disclosure last night, while stressing that the police were now “at a critical stage” of the investigation.
He also declined to comment on the possible fate of the missing men, or the motive for their abduction.
He did reveal that a Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara man, who investigators had detained has been released.
Meanwhile, police are reportedly still trying to locate
Gary Mervin Primo, called ‘Gary Talkout’, in relation to the abduction of Williams and Anderson.  There are reports that Primo is overseas.
Williams, 28, and Anderson, 20, are said to have disappeared on September 10, 2015, after entering a silver-grey car in Bent Street, Georgetown. They had informed relatives that they were heading to a football match.
One suggestion is that their disappearance may be connected to a sum of money that one of the men had borrowed.
Williams’s mother, Desiree Carter, said that her son came to her Bent Street home that evening and collected two pairs of pants and a jersey. He also indicated that he was going to a girlfriend in Sophia before heading to the football match. She has not seen him since.
Carter said that she reported the matter to the police since September 15, last, while Carmelita Pestano Anderson, the mother of Carlos Anderson, reported the matter on September 13 at the Alberttown Police Station
The family is offering a reward for any credible information pertaining to the disappearance of these two youths. Contact numbers are 592-678-1907 or 592-697-7738.

Pensioner killed in home

SIXTY-THREE-year-old Ramroop Rameshwar, a pensioner of Parika Sea Dam, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), was on Monday night robbed and killed at his home. He had worked as a cleaner at the Hydronie market, EBE.His screams of “Murder!” and “Help!” went unanswered by neighbours, who chose to call the Parika Police Station. However, the police also did not respond until the following morning.

The father of one, who had lived alone for decades, was discovered gagged and bound at the entrance of his home. Residents in the area said he had recently been seen with lots of gold jewellery at the Parika market, where he had been seeking to sell the items. It is believed that this may have been the motive behind the robbery/murder.

His son, Annand Rameshwar, said a neighbour called him at 06:30 a.m. on Tuesday and told him that she had heard the screams of his father. “She said he was hollering for ‘murder!’ and ‘help!’ but when she peep outside she didn’t see anything,” the son said.

This son explained that his father had had a collection of gold jewellery that amounted to almost $3M.

One woman said the dead man had borrowed $3,000 from someone, and was seeking to repay the debt, which had probably prompted him to sell his jewellery.

After separating from his wife in 1975, he never remarried, and had only his son, who later moved on with his life.

“Someone must have targeted him after they heard he was selling so much gold,” one man said.
Another resident in the area disclosed that a call was made to the Parika Police Station and a report was made. However, the police visited the scene the following day, when the body was discovered at the door.

“I know something was wrong when I see the top half of the door open so early in the morning… Then when we check, we realise what really happen… He was found with his mouth gagged, hands tied behind his back, and feet bound… Is like he wiggled and crawled his way to the door before he dead,” a concerned resident explained.

Rameshwar’s house is 20 minutes’ walking distance through a maze of shacks built on the Parika sea shore. The police have cordoned off the man’s home and intend to process the crime scene with the intention of solving the case.

The body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem.

 $61M fine for ganja trafficking

MAGISTRATE Rhondell Weaver on Tuesday sent a strong signal to drug traffickers by imposing a multi-million-dollar fine on Puran Persaud, called ‘Andy’, who was found guilty of trafficking 92 lbs of cannabis sativa.

Sergeant Racquel Mars had submitted that the defendant must be called to lead his defence, as his caution statement, which was deemed admissible by the court, had indicated that he had knowledge of the crime.

Attorney Mursalene Bacchus had earlier made a no-case submission, but this was overruled by the court.

Inspector Grace Bristol and Sergeant Althea Soloman, prosecuting for the police, had led evidence which revealed that the taxi driver had in his possession 92 lbs of ganja for the purpose of trafficking.

Puran Persaud, 32, of Lot 62 Rosignol, West Coast Berbice, was intercepted at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice on January 26 with 25 parcels containing the illegal substance. Questioned about the multi-coloured bag containing the illegal substance, he had told police that it was owned by a fisherman from Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice.

In handing down sentence at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Weaver said she was sending a strong signal to those with similar intent, thus she was imposing a fine that was three times the street value of the narcotics.
Initially, Puran was jointly charged with Liana Ramsundar and Puran Ramoo, but the case against those two was dismissed.

Crime on the decline

  • Police response time improving

MINISTER of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan has informed Cabinet that there was a general reduction in crime from January 23 – 29, 2016 during which there were 27 reported cases of serious crimes, 21 road accidents but no fatalities.

At a post cabinet media briefing on Wednesday, Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman revealed that the Guyana Police Force were responsible for 402kg and 491 grams of cannabis being seized and ten persons being charged.

He also noted that 777 grams of cocaine were also seized and four persons were charged, while the police destroyed 4000 cannabis plants and 44kg of dried cannabis.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) also seized 63kg of cocaine recently, Trotman said. Meanwhile, Cabinet was further informed that there was an improvement of police response to criminal activities, with the police being able to arrive at crime scenes in a timelier manner.

“The police were also able to make several arrests very soon after some crimes were committed. This has resulted in a very positive impact on the citizen/police relationships,” Minister Trotman said.

According to him, a National Security Committee was recently established and is being headed by President David Granger; the other members include Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo; Minister of State, Joseph Harmon; Minister Ramjattan and Heads of the security forces.

The committee meets on a weekly basis where crime statistics and analysis is presented.

Andrew Hannibal

of Marcy Dam, Rosignol West Bank Berbice was remanded to jail on Tuesday, last.
He is charged with having sex with a girl under 16.
Hannibal appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty.
The case was called in camera.
The pastor is accused of, between Friday January 29 and Saturday January 30, last, at Rosignol, engaging in sexual intercourse with the girl, who is also a member of his church.
It is understood that the man was having an affair with the fourth form schoolgirl for some time, ever since she was in third form.
According to reports, the girl’s parents missed her one night and began inquiring about her whereabouts. They went looking for her, but were unsuccessful.
The man’s attorney gave a lengthy submission for bail and cited his good character. He said that the man has been a pastor for over 27 years. He is a well respected person in the community. He is the founder of the church and has also founded eight other churches in the country.
The attorney also stated that during the time of the alleged incident, Hannibal was out of the district on the Linden Highway.
Prosecuting Sergeant Althea Solomon argued vehemently for bail to be refused.  She stated that the accused and the victim lived in proximity to each other.
She also stated that if granted bail there is a possibility that the accused will use his influence to tamper with witnesses and the virtual complainant.
After the matter was reported the man was arrested and placed in custody.
The magistrate refused bail and remanded him to jail until February 16, when the matter will be called again.

2lbs of cocaine in Dynamic Airways Baggage hold

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has launched an investigation at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) after a package with cocaine was unearthed in the baggage hold of a Dynamic International Airways Flight that arrived at the John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York from Guyana on Tuesday evening.
Reports are the package with the illegal substance was placed into the baggage hold by a local handler and was discovered by a handling staff while clearing the luggage from the aircraft upon its arrival in the US. The handler at JFK alerted his supervisors and the drug enforcement unit at the American airport.  Guyana Times understands that the cocaine weighed just over two pounds.
Several handlers have already been questioned about the matter as investigations continue. Drug enforcement officers are working on the theory that the cocaine was placed in the hold and was supposed to be collected by a particular individual in the US.
The US authorities are assisting CANU in its investigations. Of recent, the Unit has been successful in intercepting cocaine as persons attempt to smuggle the lucrative illegal substance through the CJIA.
However, there have been some cases where the illegal substance passed through security and ended up on the aircraft, but was intercepted at the JFK International Airport. In light of these occurrences, the Unit and the Police Narcotics Branch have beefed up their surveillance at the main port of entry.

Gunmen ambush, rob Craig miner $30M in raw gold

A miner was on Thursday ambushed and robbed $30M in raw gold by gunmen while driving his motorcar along Second Street, Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Akeem Chase, 22, of Craig, EBD, was in the company of two other miners in a vehicle and as they made their way out of the street, they were intercepted by another car which blocked their path.

Three of the men who were armed with guns reportedly exited the car and held Chase at gunpoint, demanding that he hand over the gold he was carrying.

During the ordeal, the gunmen pulled Chase out of the vehicle and threw him into a trench and further made their demands.

A fearful Chase reportedly directed them to the section of the car where the gold was kept. The gunmen without hesitation grabbed the bag containing a quantity of raw gold and made good their escape.

The Police have since arrested the two men who were with Chase at the time of the robbery as they continue their investigations.

Speaking with Guyana Times from his East Bank home, Brian Chase, father of the distraught young miner, stated that after the robbery, one of the men who was with his son, ran to the house and informed the family of the incident.

He explained that his son and his two friends only returned from the interior on Wednesday evening and were on their way to the city when they were ambushed. He told this publication that based on what was related to him, the entire robbery was planned.

“One man with a hand gun was standing at the corner while three other were in the car… one of them had an AK-47 and the other a small gun… we don’t know if the driver of the car had a gun as well,” the man stated.

He explained that as his son drove out of the street, the man who was standing at the corner order him to stop the car while pointing the gun in his direction. As the car came to a halt, two others exited the getaway silver grey car, pulled the young man out of the vehicle and demanded the gold, the father added.

As they collected the bag, they drove away. The Police were contacted and immediately visited the scene where they took statements from several eyewitnesses. The angry father stated that the Police arrested his son’s two friends, claiming that they are involved rather than actually searching for the real perpetrators.

The robbery occurred approximately 300 feet from where the young man resides.

The 49-year-old owner of the Gin LI Lai Restaurant was shot around 19.50 hrs, allegedly by one of two unmasked men who had gained entry to the restaurant via an open back door.
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after the woman, her husband Xu Hue Su, 51, and sons Zhuo Xing Su, 24, and a 14-year-old sibling, Zhuo Su, had finished dinner.
Xiu Di Yang was found at the front of the yard with a bullet wound to her forehead.
Police said that Xiu Di Yang, her husband and two sons were having dinner in their restaurant which was closed for business at the time, when two men, one of whom had a firearm, entered through an open door in an apparent robbery attempt.
The husband and the two children fled and raised an alarm. At this stage the armed man discharged a round that struck Xiu Di Yang to her head. The intruders then escaped.
Xiu Di Yang was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A police official said that the detained suspect fits the description that the slain woman’s husband gave of one of the intruders.
Police believe that the gunman panicked and discharged his firearm after the victims made an alarm. It is believed that they entered the restaurant via an unlocked back door.
Zhuo Su, one of the victim’s sons, said that the family had closed the business around 19:50 hrs, since it was the eve of the Chinese New Year.
He said that the family had just finished dinner when they heard a noise in the kitchen. He was sitting facing the kitchen when he saw someone standing by the doorway that separates the restaurant from the kitchen.
According to the son, the intruder signaled to him to be quiet.
But the young man said he made a gesture and his family members turned and saw the stranger and another accomplice.
The bandits were unmasked; one carried a small handgun and the other a cutlass. He said that his mother began screaming.
He said that his father was holding a chair trying to protect his mother, but as she continued to scream, the gunman shot her in the centre of her forehead.
The son said that his father was able to open the front door and flee with his sons from the restaurant. They then scaled the fence, before reaching the roadway, where they began to scream for help.
The incident occurred just four doors from the residence of Special Assistant to Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Mr. Gobin Harbhajan.
Mr. Harbhajan and members of a ‘B’ Division Community Policing Group (CPG) were there at the time.
Radica Ramanandan, Liaison Officer within the Ministry of Public Security, told Kaieteur News that she was standing outside Mr. Harbhagan’s house at around 20.00 hrs, when she heard the screams.
She immediately alerted her colleagues, and they hurried over to the restaurant by vehicle.
She observed that the restaurant gate was padlocked and the owner of the restaurant was screaming.
“He was screaming ‘bandits…bandits shoot my wife,’” Mrs. Ramanandan recalled.
On entering the yard, they saw the proprietor’s wife lying on the ground outside the restaurant entrance.
She appeared to have been shot in the nose.
Mrs. Ramanandan said that the woman, who was still alive, was picked up and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The bandits reportedly made good their escape through the back door. They took a box which contained cigarettes, pens, books and other items of little value.
The police were informed and responded quickly, but by that time the bandits had escaped.
Cigarettes and some other contents of the box were found scattered in the back of the yard.

CHARGED: Dhanraj Raghubir

CHARGED: Dhanraj Raghubir

investigation in relation to scams whereby he obtained over $1M from several persons by claiming he could get them US visas, police have instituted 45 charges against him.
Raghubir, 27, of Lot 26 Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown was slapped with the charges yesterday after his appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He first appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to 17 indictable charges, which all alleged that he fraudulently converted monies given to him by persons for him to either pay to Bank of Baroda for US visa application fees or for him to purchase bank drafts for Canadian visas, to his own use and benefit.
Four of the alleged victims were present for the court hearing.
Magistrate McLennan remanded Raghubir to prison despite a bail application by his lawyer, Paul Bram. During the bail application, Bram told the court that his client is willing to compensate the victims. He said that his client has no pending matters or previous convictions. He said that Raghubir works at Creative Concept located at 211 Garnett Street, Kitty.
Bram stated that Raghubir is not a flight risk and assured the court that he will attend all court hearings.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones strongly opposed the accused being granted pre-trial liberty on the ground that Raghubir has matters of a similar nature before the court.
Jones stated investigations are still ongoing and other charges are likely to be laid against him.
According to the Prosecutor, Raghubir has been evading police and had only been captured on Tuesday. On this notion, he argued that bail should be denied because the accused might not return to court for trial.

WANTED: Michael Persaud

WANTED: Michael Persaud

In relation to these matters he will make another court appearance on March 4.
Moments after that court hearing, Raghubir was taken before City Magistrate Alex Moore to answer where he faced 28 more charges of a similar nature.
He was ordered to post $5,000 bail on each of 20 charges. For the remainder he was released on his own recognizance (self bail).
Magistrate Moore instructed Raghubir to lodge his Passport and to return to court on March 8.
Earlier this month, he appeared before City Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer two fraud charges. He was charged with forging a US Embassy appointment letter and also with uttering a document that he purported to be issued by the US Embassy, knowing same to be false.
Raghubir was released on a total of $50,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to the accusations.
Persons have alleged that he had scammed them and collected a total of $1M from them under the pretext that he would be able to acquire US or Canadian visas, either a visitor’s or permanent for them.
Police had searched his place of work and found three passports belonging to the victims. Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Raghubir and Michael Persaud of Lot 15 Public Road, Herstelling East Bank Demerara pertaining to an investigation into several counts of obtaining money by false pretence. Persaud is still on the run.

Lindeners protest alleged Police excess, brutality

Some of the protesters at Mackenzie

Some of the protesters at Mackenzie

– say “plastic bags” placed over victims heads

BY UTAMU BELL

Relatives of a few Lindeners who have been charged in connection with crimes, took to the streets on Friday, demanding the removal of Police Inspector Chubinauth Singh, assigned to E Division (Linden-Kwakwani); Commander Calvin Brutus and Corporal Philbert Kendall.

The protesters who held placards and marched along Republic Avenue, Mackenzie, were mainly the families members of three men charged in connection with a recent robbery which occurred on the Mabura Public road.

Protester Calwyn Croal was wanted in connection with the robbery and was subsequently released after turning himself in.

Allegations were also made by a suspect in relation to another issue, who alleged that he was taken to Bamia Creek along the Soesdyke, Linden Highway, where a plastic bag was placed over his head and he was beaten.

A mother’s cry

Eva Stephens, mother of Jevon Scott and Devon Stephens, who have wanted bulletins issued for them in connection with a recent robbery, said her children were in the interior at the time of the incident and she was only made aware of the allegations against them when she saw the wanted bulletins in the newspapers.

As such, she said the Police are “staining” her children’s names.

“These Police come into my home, want go in me house… They say they see Devon riding the bike on the back road going to check truck, like he left a truck there. They hold on pon me son pon the bike. Me son had to ride away because my son don’t have no registration, the bike ain’t in he name, nothing… they torment me and me children. Me son just come from Camp Street, $500,000 bail they put he on, give he two robbery charges, them thing is wrong things. In this country, you guilty before they prove you innocent,” she stated.

Another mother, Coretta Langhorne, alleged that Corporal Kendall and other ranks from the Mackenzie Police Station took her son to a back road where he was beaten to confess to a crime which she claims he is innocent of. According to the woman, her son has been remanded to prison for over a year as a result.

The mother of Phelon Cumberbatch, whom a wanted bulletin was issued for said she did not take her son in to the Police after learning of the wanted bulletin but contacted a lawyer instead, who subsequently took him in.

She said eight counts of break and enter and larceny charges were then laid against him and the matter was tried in Georgetown. According to her, bail was then set at $2 million.

“They couldn’t believe he made bail. When he come up here for court, Philbert Kendall words to him was “Mih guh place things on you so they could lock your a** up back again,” she alleged.

She said her son was subsequently called in for questioning in relation to another offence and each time he attended court in relation to the issue, more charges would be added.

Brutus replies

Speaking in relation to the issue, Commander Calvin Brutus contended that the Police are in receipt of enough evidence to charge the trio, noting that a cellphone belonging to one of the victims was found on the person of one of the suspects.

He added that a statement was taken from the suspect, who implicated other perpetuators in the crime. The Commander said this was the basis for the arrest of the other suspects.

“Other members of the same group who were arrested and charged, it goes way back beyond these robberies,” he stated.

The Commander went on to state that the same group of young men were arrested and charged based on the allegation of a skidder wheel which was left at a tire shop.

Brutus added that the victim refused to proceed with the matter which resulted in the defendants not being charged additionally.

He also recounted other allegations of theft which were brought up against the suspects coming out of the Omai and Mabura areas.

Brutus said since the suspects were in hiding, they were not apprehended right away.

He added that the evidence against Calwyn Croal was highly circumstantial and not enough based on legal advice to proceed with the charge; however, it was enough for a wanted bulletin to be issued.

Croal was questioned in relation to the incident, the Commander stated, and the case remains open. Brutus further said the length of the trials were no fault of the Police since they are not directors of the Magistrate’s Courts.

“In relation to the allegations of assault, if that was so, then they should have come forward over a year now…if they are not confident in the office here, there are many other avenues… rather than waiting one year to say ‘my son was beaten’,” he stated.

The Commander said he would not confirm or deny the case of the plastic bag being placed over the youths head and the alleged beating, since he was not in receipt of such information. He said, however that Inspector Singh is targeted because he solves numerous crimes.

“What I know from looking at our records, many of those cases that were being disposed of, many of the victims after being disposed of.

This is predominantly an area where you have break and enter and larceny and simple larcenies, where, the victims after being given back their properties they have a soft heart and say ‘I have back my stuff’, and they go and tell the Magistrate ‘we don’t want to proceed anymore’, because they have back their articles. It has nothing to do with the absence of evidence but the decision taken by the victims,” Brutus contended.

Drug trafficking

He added, “When it comes to drug trafficking, I know we’ve made quite a number of cases in this Division, quite recently… persons being remanded for possession, the very last case is 426 grammes right at Retrieve. Why would Inspector Singh be a target? It’s because that is his area. Crime is Inspector Singh’s area so he has to be in the forefront in the tackle against crime. We don’t want a community that is plagued with crime. We need to see this community crime free so that citizens can be free…”

Meanwhile, Regional Chairman Renis Morian said numerous complaints of brutality came in from residents against Inspector Singh and called for an investigation.

He said Police brutality should not be encouraged since a region of peace should be promoted. He said he is prepared to stand up on behalf of residents. Morian said there are countless reports that the Police Commander is involved, noting that he may be aware of the incidents if not involved. The Regional Chairman said the issues are hampering with the region’s development.

He is of the view that the perpetrators could have been caught had gotten on to the police. “The road is one way in, one way out and if I de get onto the police, I sure they could a set up a road block because I later hear that the bandits left in a car”, the man argued.

The police have since taken statements from the two adults.

Rash of property dispute killings worries Crime Chief

FEBRUARY 15, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

The son of a wealthy rice farmer pays a poverty-stricken youth a miserly sum to kill a sibling who got the larger share of their father’s wealth.
A wife recruits an amateur hit man to bump off her husband over their assets.
An elderly woman is gunned down for a City property.
A businesswoman is riddled outside her home, about a year after a botched plot to execute her husband.
A drug addict is reportedly offered a paltry sum to set fire to a building with its sleeping occupants.
These are examples of true cases that police say show a worrying trend of people hiring individuals to get rid of associates, and even spouses, to get their hands on disputed assets. What is also worrying to the police is the fact that some of these murders are staged to appear as being the work of bandits.
This is happening at a time when the cops are taking flack over the worrisome spate of violent robberies.
“It ( the increase in property dispute  murders) is something we are very concerned about,” Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum acknowledged last week.
“It is something we will have to start monitoring. Whenever we have certain murders, we will have to look to see if they are linked to property disputes.”

‘CAIN AND ABEL’ SAGA
One of the most heinous cases, reminiscent of the biblical Cain and Abel narrative,  occurred 29 years ago.
On March 19, 1987, 27-year-old Abdool Kaleem Yassin was found shot dead at his Riverstown, Essequibo home.
From all appearances, the young man, who came from a wealthy business family, was the victim of a violent robbery.
His elder brother, 32-year-old Abdool Saleem Yassin, was so enraged that he pleaded with the police to keep his firearm, since he feared that he would shoot the killer if the suspect was  apprehended.
But then police were tipped off that Abdool Saleem Yassin had promised a youth, Noel Thomas, seven hundred dollars to murder the  younger brother.

The motive? The siblings’ father had bequeathed a larger portion of his wealth to the younger son. The jealous older brother Abdool Yaseen figured that this wealth would become his if his younger brother was eliminated.
Noel Thomas, the poverty-stricken man he hired, had allegedly done the job after being paid a hundred dollars. But the plot came to light after Kaleem refused to pay the rest of the money.
Noel Thomas began to talk.
Detectives arrested Yassin and his alleged assassin Thomas, and, under interrogation, both men eventually confessed. Saleem Yassin, whose greed caused his downfall, died of tuberculosis in the Georgetown Prisons some years ago. His alleged hit-man, who the other inmates nicknamed ‘hundred ’ because of the hundred dollar ‘advance’ he allegedly took to kill the younger Yassin, still languishes on death row. He’s presently appealing to be pardoned.

KILLING GRANDMA FOR HER LAND
One of the evening of June 20, 2011, two men went up the front steps of the Lot 42 Robb Street home of 72-year-old Clementine Fiedtkou-Parris.
They asked to see her, and when she came to the door, the men shot her dead before escaping in a waiting car.
Almost immediately, information surfaced that the execution was linked to a dispute over the old woman’s property. The gunmen were reportedly paid $400,000 each to end the woman’s life.
Orin Hinds, called ‘Red Man,’ of Burnham Boulevard, Mocha, East Bank Demerara; Kevin October called, ‘Troy,’ of Second Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara; Cleon Hinds, and Roy Jacobs called ‘Chippie’ or ‘Black Boy’ of Evans Street, Charlestown, were arrested and charged for her murder.

Cleon Hinds, one of the accused, revealed in a caution statement that an individual named ‘Roy’ informed him that “a big man, pay them big money fuh throw down a big lady next to Trans (Traspacific Motor Spares).”
Hinds stated that he later learnt that the ‘big man’ had an ongoing dispute with Mrs. Fiedtkou-Parris , over the land she occupied.
According to the statement, Hinds told the police that prior to the shooting, he had borrowed a gun to kill the old woman but his brother eventually went on the “wuk”.
He subsequently learnt that the old woman was dead. A few days later, the accused said he received $80,000 from Roy to share between himself and his brother.
“A real sorry for the lady boss man. Me ain’t even know how me get caught up in this thing,” Hinds said in his statement.
On , 2015, wails echoed through the High Court after Justice Justice Navindra Singh imposed a combined sentence of 324 years on the four accused. This amounted to 10 years for premeditation, another 10 years because the murder was for pay and five years for the use of a firearm. Four years were deducted for the time the men served in prison pending trial, bringing the judgment to 81 years each.
They must serve at least 45 years in jail before they are eligible for parole.
But a pastor of the church Mrs. Fiedtkou-Parris once attended made the telling point that the intellectual author of the crime is still at large.

THE AUTO DEALER’S WIFE
On January 12, at 129 Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara, 43-year-old Patricia Senasie stepped out a vehicle to open the gate so her daughter could drive into the businesswoman’s  yard at 129 Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara.
It was then that gunmen, clad in dark clothing riddled her with bullets before escaping in another vehicle.
A month later, police arrested and charged Richard Stanton, of Princes Street, Lodge for the murder, after the victim’s daughter, positively identified him as one of the gunmen.

Arson murder accused Ganga Kishna (left) and Avishkar Kissoon

The killing had occurred almost a year after the slain woman’s husband, Deokaran Sanasie, owner of Ram’s Auto Sales, survived a similar attempt on his life.
On February 14, 2014, the 59-year-old businessman, known as ‘Ram’, was sitting outside his hardware store in Light and Fourth Streets, Alberttown, when a man who was on a CG motorcycle shot him three times.
He survived the attack and later identified individuals whom he claimed had paid the gunmen $6M to kill him. The attempt was said to have stemmed from a property dispute.

MURDER BY FIRE
At around 2.00 a.m. on November 16, 2014, someone set fire to an old, three-storey building at Robb and King Streets. At the time, 63-year-old Hilrod Thomas, and his two daughters, Theresa Rozario, 15, and 12-year-old  Feresa Rozario, were inside.
The two girls were trapped inside. A badly burned Hilrod Thomas managed to jump through a window. He died shortly after from his injuries.
The building in which the girls perished was at the centre of a bitter and protracted dispute involving Hilbert Thomas and others, who were all claiming ownership, following the owner’s death in 2001. Some individuals in the dispute accused one another of causing the tragic fire.
But just over a year after the deadly arson attack, police arrested and charged Ganga Kishna, 72, a businessman of Lot 11 North Road, Bourda and his employee Avishkar Kissoon, 24, of Lot 1 Sherriff Street, on a joint charge of murder.
Prior to that, police had questioned and even detained Kishna numerous times during their investigations.
The charges came shortly after a drug addict reportedly confessed to police that he was offered money to set fire to the disputed Robb and King Streets building in November 2014.
Police investigators were told that a city businessman, who has claimed ownership of the property, had paid the ‘junkie’ to set the building on fire.

HAMMERED TO DEATH AT HERSTELLING
On the morning of September 10, 2015, Nathan Persaud, a 42-year-old block maker, was found dead in the living room of his Lot 66 Herstelling home.
His body bore a stab wound to his chest and the back of his head was bashed in. Police recovered a hammer, two knives and a piece of rock, all of which had blood stains from the crime scene.
Some residents had reportedly seen a strange man leaving the slain man’s yard.
About a month later, police detained Oswald Junior Yaw, also known as Leow, in connection with the blockmaker’s death.
Particulars of the newly instituted charge alleged that on September 10, at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, they murdered Nathan Persaud in pursuant of an agreement. As part of the agreement, Beverly Persaud promised Yaw money, as inducement for him to consider causing the death of Nathan Persaud.
It is alleged that he was contracted and promised $1.7M to kill Persaud. Police also arrested the slain man’s estranged wife, Beverly Persaud in connection with his murder, which was said to have stemmed from a dispute the couple had over their assets.
On October 14, Beverly Persaud and Oswald Junior Yaw, were remanded for the block maker’s murder.
The charge alleged that the two murdered Nathan Persaud, and that Beverly Persaud had promised Yaw money, as inducement for him to consider causing Persaud’s death.

KILLING A WIFE, STAGING A ROBBERY
On August 20, 2015, Pamela Kendall, a 56-year-old cash crop farmer, collapsed in her brother’s yard at number 45 Village, Corentyne, with a bullet wound to her face. She died shortly after.
Initial reports were that Mrs. Kendall was shot by a gunman who had forced his way into the victim’s home during a power outage.
Her reputed husband, 51-year-old Deochand Sookchand was reportedly in the bathroom when the ‘gunman’ entered via the back door, shot Kendall, ran up an inner stairway, then fled empty handed with the ‘accomplice.’
Residents who knew the victim had blocked a roadway and burned tyres while expressing outrage at the deadly ‘home invasion’ and other violent crimes in the community.
Sookchand, a Good Hope Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), employee, was subsequently charged with Kendall’s murder.
At present, police are probing at least one other suspicious ‘home invasion murder’ that they believe may be linked to a dispute.

Joshua Joseph and Kestor McPhoy

… after charged with breaking and entering, robbery under arms

BY KIZZY COLEMAN

Twenty-year-old Joshua Joseph, one of the youths granted a pardon by President David Granger, was on Wednesday back in court, charged with escaping from Police custody, breaking and entering and robbery under arms.

It is alleged that Joseph while being a prisoner at the Brickdam Police Station on a charge of robbery, he escaped from Police custody.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Joseph was in Police custody and was being escorted by a Police Constable to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts when he started to behave in a disorderly manner.

He added that he shoved and held on to the said Constable and a struggle ensued, after which he managed to release himself from handcuffs and made good him escape.

He was later arrested on February 15 in the Stabroek area.

Joseph explained to the court that he was clad in old clothes and requested better clothing, a request which was denied. He added that the Police Constable tried to push him into the Police van and he resisted and a scuffle ensued. He further added that he fell during the scuffle and his handcuff opened which he saw as an opportunity to escape.

Prosecutor Jones told the court that Joseph was one of the persons who had been pardoned by President Granger, but he could not say what the offence was that he had been incarcerated for.

Joseph pleaded not guilty to an additional charge which alleged that on January 19, at High Street, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Osa Omaree and stole one Sharp 21-inch television valued $35,000, one laptop valued $50,000, one gold chain valued $30,000 and one gold earring valued $8000; a total value of $123,000 and the property of Osa Omaree.

Also it is alleged that Joseph, while in the company of 21-year-old Kestor McPhoy on February 13, at Stabroek, he robbed Felicia Walton of her gold chain valued $60,000.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded to prison. The matter will return to court on March 1.

President Granger after stepping into office in May of 2015 announced that he would be granting presidential pardons to ‘petty’ criminals. He stated that it was his intention to pardon convicts annually who were serving short sentences for minor or non-violent related offences during his time in office.

The President further explained that when these persons are released, they will attend rehabilitative programmes with the aim of developing their skills so they can be reintegrated into society.

Thus far, some 60 youths who were incarcerated have been released.

In September 2015, a 49-year-old woman of Kingley Village, Berbice, was raped by a 21-year-old man, who is allegedly another prisoner granted a presidential pardon. This was not confirmed as the Guyana Police Force and Prison Service has refused to disclose information as to the young man’s identity.

an early morning robbery at McDoom, East Bank Demerara.
This incident occurred a little after 09:00 hrs at a construction site at Lot 31 Middle Street, McDoom where about seven construction workers were carrying out their daily task.
The contractor, Odinie Jordan, called “Coolie”, had visited the site to pay his workers when the masked men stormed the work site and escaped with the payroll and two phones after shooting him. The victim was taken to a private hospital.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, police were taking statements from the workers, who all looked traumatized.
One worker, Yassakar Williams, said that when he arrived at work early yesterday, his employer instructed them to clean the building.
“I was in the back room cleaning up and the boss call me to come to the front and he was saying that we have to run some wires in the ceiling. When he done talking, I see a man come upstairs with a cutlass and he come straight to me,” a devastated Williams recalled.
He said that at one point he thought that one of the women in the village had complained to their partners that he was “troubling” them.
“I thought this man coming to chop me up because I does trouble them girls and I thought somebody talk on me,” he explained.
He further revealed that he stood there without saying anything as the partially masked man walked towards him.
“He snatch me and say don’t move and the boss was standing right next to me. (The boss) tell the man that he can’t do me anything just like that and then the man (bandit) call a next person from downstairs and the person come and he tell him to shoot this one,” Williams said.
He added that he thought it was him the gunman was going to shoot but it was actually his employer.
According to Williams, after Jordan was shot, one of the armed men instructed him to go downstairs and lie on the floor with the others.
“When I come downstairs and lie down, I see two more workers and I ask them if it is robbery and they say yes,” he said.
Meanwhile, two young workers who were working at the side of the house said that just as they were about to enter through the back door, they spot one of the armed bandits and ran for their lives.
The two scaled the back fence and hid in a neighbouring yard. “When we jumped the fence, one of the neighbours see we and she come out on the verandah and start quarreling,” the boys said.
Scared for their lives, they claimed that they were worried that the armed men would jump the fence and kill them after hearing the neighbour.
Investigations are ongoing.

According to information, the police received a call about 23:07 hrs on Sunday informing about screams coming from the house of Nazmoon Higgins, a Neighbourhood Police officer, at Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice.
Ranks from the Reliance Police Station responded promptly and upon arriving on the scene they cordoned off the house. A minute later Higgins was seen running towards the fence.
He was promptly arrested.
The police then saw some men in dark clothing in the vicinity of the house and they challenged them, resulting in several minutes of trading gunshots. During the shooting, however, the men managed to make good their escape with $350,000, two gold bands, one diamond ring, a gold band and two cell phones.
The woman told investigators that she was tied up and badly beaten by the men and she was subsequently rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated.
Higgins identified the bandit who was first captured as her neighbour, who lives a few houses away, and who was at the bank when the woman did a large withdrawal.
She also identified one of the escaping bandits as a man who did some work on her house recently.
That man was arrested at his home early the following morning.
The police subsequently received a call around 07:00 hrs yesterday that a man was at the hospital with a gunshot wound seeking medical attention.
Upon arrival the police recognized well known character David Williams called “Dog Face” or “Dew Fish” of Angoy’s Avenue. His leg was badly damaged.
When questioned, he told investigators he was robbed whilst coming out of the Berbice River with marijuana. He claimed that he was shot when he put up a fight. The suspect stated that he jumped overboard and managed to swim to shore.
But the police did not buy his story and placed him under guard at the hospital.
Both men are expected to be placed before the court soon, while the police continue the hunt for their accomplices.

Armed bandits rob Bourda Market vendor

Speaking with Guyana Times Robbie Ganraj (vendor), related that Goutie was tending to customers when the two men approached her and enquired about the price for an item on display.

Man confesses to killing boss, stealing gold

FEBRUARY 24, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

The saying that a killer always returns to the scene of his crime held true this week, and led to the capture of a mining camp employee who has since confessed to clubbing his boss to death last month and stealing his gold.
On February 2, the skeletal remains of Jaynarine Basdeo, a gold miner of Fort Ordinance, East Canje Berbice was found at Kurubang, Mazaruni.  A length of wood was near the remains.
Police suspected that Basdeo, said to be about 70, was slain in mid-January by his 32-year-old employer, Ramishpan, who was now missing.
On Monday, police arrested a man at Five Mile Junction, Mid-Mazaruni, with some 600 grammes of marijuana in his possession. It was only when they had taken him to a police station that the ranks realised that their prisoner was Ramishpan, the mining camp employee, who was wanted for Basdeo’s murder.
According to the police, the suspect, who is from Berbice, confessed to killing Basdeo. He claimed that he had worked for the miner for about three weeks and that in January, he asked his employer for his money, which amounted to ten pennyweight of gold. He claimed that Basdeo refused to pay him, and struck him on the arm with a length of wood after they quarrelled. The suspect claimed that he managed to disarm Basdeo and struck him twice to the head.
Leaving the murder weapon near the body, the suspect said he then went into the mining camp and removed 12 pennyweight of gold from a bucket under Basdeo’s bed.
The employee then headed to ‘the landing’ and later travelled to Bartica. After that, he returned to his home in Berbice.
On Monday, he decided to return to the interior, and it was then that he was held at Mazaruni.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that DNA samples have been taken from the remains and from some of the victim’s relatives to confirm identification.

However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Kerry Bostwick opposed to bail for the defendant. Bostwick highlighted the seriousness and the prevalence of the offence and the fact that an offensive weapon was used in its commission. Pregnant woman strangles 7-yr-old son with bed sheet

FEBRUARY 25, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

Police have arrested an eight-month pregnant woman who reportedly admitted to strangling her seven-year- old son with a bed sheet on Sunday night.
The 28-year-old woman was arrested at her La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara home Tuesday night after police received a tip off that the child was murdered.
The child, Emanuel King, was pronounced dead at the West Demerara Hospital on Monday after his mother belatedly took him there.
His mother, Sonia King, had initially told police and other relatives that the child fell and injured himself, but no one really bought her story.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that the woman was arrested after she could no longer live with the guilt. She confided in her husband that she had strangled the child.
Her husband subsequently informed the police.
Kaieteur News was told that while the child reportedly died on Sunday night, it was not until the following morning that his mother took his body in a taxi to the West Demerara Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.
But police will have to do additional investigations since there are reports that the child was beaten by other persons in the home the night before he died.
A relative of the dead child had told this newspaper on Monday night that they were suspicious from the time they heard the woman’s explanation of her son’s death.
The relative said that they had received a call around 09:30 hours on Monday telling them of the child’s death.
The relative said that they went to the woman’s house to confirm the news and they even accompanied her to the La Grange Police Station where she reported that the child fell off an abandoned 20 foot container.
But later on Monday, they were contacted by the woman’s neighbour, who told them that he had some information on the child’s death but was reluctant to give it over the telephone.
When they finally met with the neighbour they were told that another close male relative of the child, who lives at the house was seen beating him mercilessly on Sunday night.
The neighbour reportedly claimed that he had to call over to the child’s parents to tell them to stop the beating.
The relative said that they later reported to the police what they had heard. “They tell we they had to wait on the post mortem,” the relative stated.
Police had examined the body and found no marks of violence.
“But even if she did not confess, the post mortem would have shown the cause of death,” a source close to the investigation.
According to a source close to the investigation, the woman confessed that she had beaten the child on many occasions before, since “He was mischievous and own away”.
Police are preparing a file to send to the Director of Public Prosecutions before instituting a murder charge.
“She will definitely be charged with murder,” the source said.

This occurred around 03:30 hrs at the home of Takurgobin Katwaroo, 62, and his wife, 59-year-old Deowattie, at Lot 96 Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The couple operates a grocery store at their home and they are the only occupants of the property.
The bandits, according to reports, escaped leaving a screw driver, cutlass, beer and Guinness bottles behind.
There are reports that the armed men entered the two-storey house by jumping over a neighbour’s fence and walking on top a shed at the Katwaroo’s home to climb on to the verandah.
They then cut the grill on the door and entered the house which has four rooms. At the time of the robbery, the husband and wife were sleeping in the last room.
Ravi, the couple’s grandson, said that when the men entered the house, they ransacked the three rooms. Not satisfied with what they got, they started a fire in front of the Katwaroo’s bedroom to get the couple to open their bedroom door.
“When the smoke started to go in the room, my grandfather see and he open the door to go and see what it was but as soon as he opened the door, he get a lash in his head with the gun,” the young Katwaroo said.
The couple was tied and gagged. The bandits informed the 59-year-old woman that if she did not hand over all their valuables, they would shoot her husband dead.
The men escaped only after they were convinced that they had got all of the valuables that were in the house.
Just as they were leaving, they told the couple that it was their next door neighbour, who sent them to the house.
However, Ravi Katwaroo said that the men were informed that his grandparents and their next door neighbours do not speak to each other and tried to set them up. “They also said that they were the ones who rob (his grandparents) last week.”
According to the grandson, last week, thieves entered the grocery shop and escaped with milk, cigarettes, phone cards, money and other items.
They entered the shop by cutting the grill work. No one saw when they entered.
While there is no suspect as yet, the police visited the scene and took fingerprints. Investigations are ongoing.

Bandit shoots accomplice dead during robbery

FEBRUARY 26, 2016 | BY | FILED UNDER NEWS

A robbery at Arif’s Service Station at Onderneeming, West Coast Berbice went badly wrong for the perpetrators last night when a gun-toting bandit shot his partner dead, while trying to shoot the fuel station supervisor.
The bandit, who is still to be identified, was shot in the centre of the forehead by his accomplice, who reportedly fled the scene in a car that belonged to a customer who was there to refuel. The vehicle was recovered at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, some three villages away from the scene of the robbery.
The robber is believed to have escaped with about $100,000.
Police reportedly recovered a knife, a mobile phone, and a pair of sunshades from the slain man. At press time, the hunt was still on for his accomplice. The entire episode is believed to have been recorded by security cameras at the Guyoil outlet.
The drama began at around 19.15 hrs when two men, one armed with a knife and the other with a gun, entered the service station and headed for a female pump attendant.
The attendant told Kaieteur News that one of the men went over to her and ‘calmly’ ordered her to hand over ‘the money.’
She thought the ‘customer’ was joking, when she saw he was pointing a handgun at her, she immediately gave him all the money and fled to a nearby shop.

The robbers then headed to the service station mart, where the supervisor and other staff were on duty.
Kaieteur News understands that the supervisor was about to resist, and the robber with the knife rushed towards him. It was at that same instant that the bandit with the gun tried to shoot the supervisor, but shot his partner instead.
Leaving his mortally wounded accomplice, the gunman reportedly forced a customer out of a car and drove away. The owner of the car reportedly told police that the bandit would not have gotten far since the vehicle was low on fuel.
The slain bandit’s body lay at the scene for over an hour before being taken to a hospital mortuary.
Back in September 2014, two masked robbers escaped with an undisclosed sum of money, two cellular phones, and two bags containing workers’ dinner after storming the same fuel station.
The incident was captured on the eight surveillance cameras placed around the premises.
An employee had stated that the gunmen, with faces covered with stockings, arrived in a heavily-tinted car just after a rush-hour of customers.
One of the robbers was carrying a gun, while the other had a knife.
One of the robbers saw two bags nearby, which he thought were full of money, and picked them up. The bags actually contained the employees’ dinner and two cell phones.
The station is operated by Ms. Fareha Hanif.
She recalled that the gunmen went straight for the alarm system and destroyed it just after arriving on the premises. The alarm would have been equipped with a switch that the employees could press to activate a siren placed around the gas station.
Hanif added that the gas station was targeted numerous times.

“Investigations by the University of Guyana Administration have not revealed any basis to conclude or suspect that she was sexually assaulted as alleged in the article carried in the Guyana Chronicle, on Saturday, February 27,” the statement read.
According to the University, the student was taken to the medical centre on Friday afternoon where she was diagnosed by medical personnel as “intoxicated.”

UGSS President Joshua Griffith told Guyana Times he has been receiving similar information but he expressed that the findings are not exactly substantive.
Griffith said he wants to at least speak to the female student to hear her version of the story before making a definitive conclusion on the issue.

Corentyne businessman shot in attempted robbery

A man is now hospitalised after three masked men attacked a minibus driver and shot him in a failed robbery attempt in Berbice on Thursday evening.
Police in a release said Takraj Boodram, 33, of Belvedere South Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) was about to enter his premises when three men approached him and one of them, who was armed with a firearm, discharged a round that hit him to his left side shoulder.
Eyewitnesses stated that Boodram, who lives alone, had just returned from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport after taking a neighbour who was returning to North America.
The bus stopped three gates away from Boodram’s residence where the passengers who had also travelled to the airport to accompany their relative disembarked. It was at this point that the three masked men were first seen.

Hill Foot farmer found murdered at home

FARMER Anthony Breedy was yesterday found dead in the lower flat of his Lot 76-78 Hill Foot, Soesdyke/Linden Highway home on the East Bank of Demerara at approximately 11:00 hrs. His body was found lying face down, with his hands and feet bound. The Guyana Police Force said in a statement that the body of the 60-year-old farmer was discovered with multiple injuries to his head. The upper flat of his two-storey home was ransacked, the investigators also disclosed.

The scene of the crime

Breedy was the lone occupant of the house at the time of the incident. However, the gruesome discovery was made by a friend, who had gone to the Hill Foot residence to check-up on him. He was last seen by residents on Saturday night.

Breedy had previously worked as an Agriculture Officer in Montserrat. He reportedly returned to Guyana last year, and had since spent most of his time farming in the vicinity of the Soesdyke Highway.

According to a News Room report, evidence seems to suggest that there was a struggle, as broken blocks and splashes of blood were visible at the scene of the crime. Notably, pieces of wood that may have been used to bludgeon the victim were also visible in the lower flat of the house.

Residents have told the Online news agency that they did not hear any strange sound coming from the man’s house from the time he was last seen to the time of the discovery. Assistant Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken, in an interview with News Room, said the house was not ransacked to any extent, which suggests that the man might have been murdered by someone he had known. He said investigators are presently trying to ascertain the motive for the crime.

It was also pointed out that the farmer’s SUV was missing at the time of the discovery.

The items, which were found Sunday morning in a house on the Corentyne, include two laptops and a cellular phone. The discovery was made about 10:00h after two armed men went to a house at Ankerville, Port Mourant, and robbed a family of cash, jewellery and other valuables.
Reports are that about 19:45h on Saturday, two men, armed with firearms, cut through a back fence and robbed the family of a retired security officer and a retired headteacher.
Harnauth Jaiprashad, 65; his wife, Parmini, 62; their two children, two grandchildren and son-in-law had just returned from a fast food restaurant and were preparing to have dinner when the robbers entered.
One of the couple’s children, who is a teacher, Roshmine, said the men entered the yard from the back and walked around the side of the house. She said neither of them was wearing a mask.
“They say you all don’t, you all don’t holler. One had a shotgun and one had a revolver; the one with the revolver also had a cutlass.”
Jaiprashad said they were taken into the house and the door closed behind them.
“They tell us that they didn’t come to stay long and that they didn’t come to hurt anybody; they just come for the gold and the money. They put everybody to lie down and told me to give them the gold and all the money, so I give them the gold and the money.”
The mother of two said she handed over her parents’ National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pension.
“The one with the shotgun, he remained in the room and he continued to search the room. He tell me, ‘go and lie down, don’t look me in my face.’ When he came out, they ask whose car parked out there and I told them, ‘is my husband’.”
Even though Jaiprashad’s husband was lying on the floor near her, she told the bandits that he had gone out and taken the car key with him. “Then they ask if we have a haversack and I said no. They said that they wanted a bag to put the things in, so they took my working bag and put all the things that they collected from the house, including the money and gold inside.”
Before leaving, the men picked up three cellular phones, two laptops and other items, and on their way out, cut the phone line.
“But they cut the wrong line: they cut the extension line, not the main line. In haste, they say you all don’t call anybody and they closed the door,” Jaiprashad added.
The entire ordeal lasted about 10 minutes. Jaiprashad said contact was soon made with the Whim Police, who arrived about five minutes after the call was made.
According to a Police source, the investigation began and based on intelligence gathered, they were able to recover some of the articles.
Police are continuing the investigation.

A 28-year-old ex-convict and two others killed 60-year-old remigrant Anthony Breedy, whose bound body was found in his Hill Foot, Soesdyke home on Monday.

The killers then made off with Breedy’s Sport
Utility Vehicle (SUV) and other valuables.
But the ex-convict’s luck ran out yesterday, when police arrested him on the East Coast of Demerara, shortly after he had stashed the stolen vehicle.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum revealed that the suspect was still carrying Mr. Breedy’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card when he was held.
The Crime Chief also said that police recovered the victim’s vehicle at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara.
The detained man is Paul Goriah, of Timehri Squatting Area. He was recently released from prison following a break and enter and larceny and narcotics conviction. His alleged accomplices, who are still at large, are also from the same Timehri squatting community.
Blanhum said that the suspect is cooperating with investigators, while police continue to hunt for the other suspects.
The body of the 60-year-old agriculturist was found at around 11:00 hours on Monday in the lower flat of his two-storey house. His limbs were bound and he bore injuries to his head and his home was ransacked.
Kaieteur News understands that scratches on the detained ex-convict indicate that the victim put up a desperate fight for his life. At press time, police were planning to have the injuries examined by a physician.
From information investigators have gathered, the intruders killed Mr. Breedy last Saturday night. Police said that there was no sign of forced entry to the premises.
They then took the murdered man’s SUV and other valuables to an area at South Ruimveldt, where they split up the loot. The ex-convict, Paul Goriah, reportedly told his accomplices that he would sell the vehicle at Berbice. Unknown to his accomplices, he also stashed the dead man’s ATM card.
But the plan reportedly unraveled yesterday after the ex-convict stashed the stolen vehicle.
He reportedly then hired a taxi to take him out of the area. However, an argument reportedly broke out between the suspect and the taxi driver when he was unable to pay the fare.
The suspect reportedly smashed the rear windscreen of the driver’s car.
Police then arrested the suspect and found Mr. Breedy’s bank card on his person.
The slain man’s sister, Yvette Breedy, had told Kaieteur News that she last spoke to him on Saturday.
She said that she received a call on Monday from someone who told her that there was a robbery at her brother’s house and they should check on him. Anthony Breedy lived alone.
“Somebody went to see him and saw the house open. When they called they got no response. When they pushed the door and went in, they saw him lying on the floor tied up,” Yvette Breedy told this newspaper.
The woman said she is unaware that her brother had any problems with anyone.
Anthony Breedy was an agriculturist who returned to Guyana a year ago from Montserrat. He was reportedly farming on the plot of land he acquired in the Linden/Soesdyke Highway
